Some news from Dolphins practice this morning, including Jake Long's return
The Dolphins are now in full practice mode as they prepare for the season opener in Buffalo on Sunday. And there's some good news coming out of the 30 minutes that practice was open to the media today. So let's get to some of it:
- LT Jake Long was back at practice today. He sat out of Monday's session, riding the bike instead. But today, Long was wearing full pads and participating. Though it was only likely a "limited" participation, the fact that the big man was practicing at all today seems to be a good sign. Look for Jake to go through a full practice by the end of the week and start on Sunday in Buffalo.
- The Dolphins have indeed signed running back Clifton Smith, formerly of the Tampa Bay Bucs. He's the sixth running back on the Dolphins' roster and will likely step right in as the team's primary return man. Here are some good highlights of the 5'9, 190 pound return man. To make room, the Dolphins dumped OL Joe Reitz from the team.
- Despite all of that nonsense yesterday, Bill Parcells was back sitting in his golf cart at practice today - just like he has been basically every day since camp started in July. Jeff Ireland was right next to him - as he has been basically every day. Nothing has changed. Can we forget about this now?

So excited for Sunday
I really feel like we have something new to show the world come Sunday at Buffalo. With 6 running backs who can make big plays, the possibilities are endless!
Let this season BE GINN!
Also, the 8th spot on the Practice Squad was filled

Not Overbay. It is Jeron Mastrud. Mastrud and Overbay are both TEs on the practice squad. He was an undrafetd free agent from Tampa Bay and was released.
Who's the new TE?
New tight end out here. Big guy, wearing 88. Not sure on who yet … Olb chris mccoy is gone

Thats a lot of backs
I was told they wouldn’t keep 6 when Sheets was healthy! LIARS!!! j/k lol
Can't remember the last time Miami had so much talent.
Rusty Smith! (Titans future qb)
Camarillo trade made 0 sense. A starting clutch WR for a 29 year old back-up CB? Someone found Rickey's old stash.
short and sweet
Back to 2008, no one is safe, all must produce and all must compete at a higher level than they’re physically capable of playing at. That’s what was missing last year and this is how the bottom half of the roster is going to step up. Either step up or step off.

I live in Tampa. Clifton Smith was the best returner the Bucs had.
But there have been some other guys that are getting better at returning and they also contribute on the offensive side of the ball.
Clifton is strictly a return man and never really helped in the run game. It was a call that the Bucs had to make. Since some other guys can return as well, they let him go to save a roster spot.
Dolphins and Gators baby!
I'm hearing a lot of talk about us having 6 rb's..
but the way I’m looking at it…we have 5, plus KR/PR Clifton Smith. I view him the same as Long snapper John Denney…no one really thinks of him as a DE. Hopefully Smith can focus on the returns and maybe jump in a formation here or there. I hope he is mentally over the awful hit he toke from the Carolina dirtbag.
we have 6 RBs ...
1. Ronnie Brown
2. Ricky Williams
3. Patrick Cobbs
4. Lex Hilliard
5. Clifton Smith
and
6. Lousaka Polite
Yes, I admit I have CLS... which might actually be a good thing, I was positive we were going to win it all with Saban, then with Cam ... and even last season... I wasn't expecting much in 2008 though ... Hopefully its unfounded ... we will see....

His point is
when we say we have 9 OLmen Denny isn’t included. So instead of 3 specialists(Fields, DC$, and Denny we now have 4 and I seem to agree with his contention
3 new 2010 starting LBers via 2010 draft
Confidence breeds success, self-doubt breeds failure
Clifton Smith
i am stoked about this signing.
I hope they give him all KR/PR responsibilities as I was not excited about Carroll/Bess/Cobbs in the RS roll.
by scrappy the wildcat on Sep 8, 2010 1:18 PM EDT up reply actions
I completely agree
Clifton Smith will immediately be able to step into this role that the others did not have me excited about. On the other hand, I read on my fantasy football team update that the Viking were thinking of using Greg Camarillo for return duties. Yuck.

The low down:
NFL.com
Mastrud is a good collegiate tight end but may struggle to make the transition to the next level. He does not play the game as fast as he times and will struggle to gain separation vs. good man-coverage linebackers. He is a bit stiff in the hips and knees and struggles to sink his hips to get in and out of his breaks quickly. He is effective when running routes vs. zone coverage and knows how to read secondaries and find the open seams. Looks comfortable catching balls up high. He will struggle with low passes, as he lacks the flexibility to reach down and catch the ball while on the move. He shows effort and good hand use when blocking but lacks the strength to drive opponents off the line. Tends to block with a narrow base, which causes him to fall off too many blocks.
CBS
Release: Not a blazer off the line of scrimmage, but slips by linebackers and is sneaky-quick into his pattern. Will separate past linebackers once in the second level and get down the seam.
Hands: Catches ball away from his frame, even when he’s facing the quarterback. Good concentration and isn’t afraid of the big hit when catching between the linebackers. Gets most high throws, snatching them out of the air even when threatened by the safety. Inconsistent bringing in low throws, as he lacks great flexibility.
Route running: Best as a move-the-chains receiver but can occasionally make a longer play. Finds holes between linebackers on short patterns, presenting his numbers for the quarterback. Adequate foot quickness on out-routes, although he should sink his hips more going in. Will use a head and body fake to slip by second level and into the third. Boxes out linebackers using his tall frame.
After the catch: Secures the ball after the catch, with two hands if necessary. Leans forward and keeps his feet alive to run through tackles. Fights for the first down while keeping legs churning. Enough speed to make defenses pay for letting him loose through their zone. Some agility in the open field, but not much elusiveness.
Blocking: Looks tall and lean, but anchors well on the edge. Readjusts hands if losing his grip after initial contact. Drives into defensive ends on run plays, keeping his hands and feet moving to push him back. Used in motion to seal the edge and in the backfield as an extra pass protector. Fires off the snap to get angle to stop backside run support – although he lacks the strength to sustain against larger ends. Find a target on the second level and sustains in most cases. Struggles with great quickness one-on-one on the outside.
Intangibles: Plays a lot of snaps and gives good effort on every one. Second-team Academic All-American, KSU’s Big 12/Chik-fil-a Fall Community of Champions representative, and nominated for AFCA Good Works Team in 2008.

I dont understand why we dont just use another lineman in our 2 te sets
this guy isnt getting open in the NFL

I hope so because I'm tired of seeing our TEs get pushed into the backfield
Fasano was thrown into RB against Jacksonville and had to resort to holding..I like his receiving skills a lot but not every TE can both block and catch really well and he does struggle at times.
by haildanhenningnow on Sep 8, 2010 5:25 PM EDT up reply actions
Which goes along with my point in we should just use a lineman in our 2 te sets
If all we ask of him is to block then put a lineman out there who can do it better

nothing went wrong
Parcells always planned to do this. I think our coaches and gm wanted him to get of their damn back. Now our boys have control. I’ve heard of many times were Parcells cut people that Sparano wanted. We don’t need that.

Wasn't Parcells leaving the plan anyway?
He said this was the plan in the beggining and I’m sick of people freaking out before halfway thru the season. That’s when freakout starts. Or maybe after the first game if we lose. But not befor the first kickoff. C’MON MANNNNN
