Dolphins release OLB Charlie Anderson; sign ILB Bobby Carpenter

According to Omar Kelly on Twitter:

The Dolphins have released Charlie Anderson to make room for recently signed Bobby Carpenter, who is a strong special teams contributor.

Cutting Anderson saves Miami from having to pay him $2.2million.  Anderson posted just five sacks in his last 32 games.

Bobby Carpenter will likely fill the nickle backer role, replacing Crowder on passing downs.  The Fins had initially hoped rookie A.J. Edds would be their nickel 'backer, prior to his season ending injury.

I think he is a downgrade,

especially since Anderson was an OLB, the primary WLB back up, and we already had 4 ILB, so now no real WLB back up.

by uncle finster on Sep 6, 2010 4:50 PM EDT up reply actions

How do you guys not like this move?

Carpenter fills an immediate role as our nickel-backer. This also gives us great flexibility in our LB core. Dansby was the only LB on our team that could cover which meant that we would never be able to get him off the field if needed.

Misi can and will be used as a nickle LB as well,

and Carpenter isn’t that good to begin with, he is a 1st round bust, a good STer and a mediocre LB, ILB at that, he should not be confused with a good LB, just sayin.

Maybe if Misi or Dansby NEED a breather.

cuz i hope they don’t put Dobbins in that situation

we take him out on a run-down

and put in Alama-Francis or Moses, and bump Misi over to the weak-side. Bring both OLB’s and get your pressure from that if they decide to pass.

in a running down, it would make it a lower % success rate.

so, as long our D isn’t totally incompetent in pass protection, we still won.

and then he gets released for another Cowboy player that was simply cut. Why wouldn’t you release one of those new guys we just picked up instead of Anderson?

I was curious about this when the Rams released him

I remember how much the front office thought of Carpenter when there was talk Miami was possibly going to trade for him while he was in Dallas. I’m not surprised at the signing, but I’m surprised they let Anderson go in favor of it. I figured Moses would’ve been the odd man out if this move happened.

To me, Carpenter more closely resembles the skill set that Anderson possesses.

Moses is a bigger guy that can stop the run, like IAF, so it makes sense that we would trade Anderson for Carpenter. Especially considering that Carpenter is supposedly a good ST player, something our coaches covet.

better in coverage than CA and a better ILB than CA, not as good a pass rusher as CA, but a good blitzer in Mike Nolan’s system. Future mentor to AJ Edds?

does anybody know how much cap room we still have

almost all these moves had to have something to do with cap space. Maybe a free up for another big move next year. I see alot of band-aids going up now. Yes we are rebuilding and it is a process and takes time, but we are kinda moving slow, IMO. We do have a very soild team this year. A good QB Good RBs, Great WR and 4more good ones.If Henne steos up we have a chance barring injury. D is the question, JO will play soild for a rookie, KD will be great, CB and Backfield is the worry, but we will see in time. !game should go over easy buit the true test comes quick after that. Hope we get a gut check and everybody steps up all the way around

well, there are multiple ways to spin it

the bottom half of this roster has been constantly churning since the trifecta took over. It could be less about a lack of confidence than about a reflection of the the regime’s philosophy about how to manage a roster, i.e., that the bottom half should always be in flux.

I think maybe they like the guys they have because they are good

rather than the other way around:)

As long as the starters stay consistent, I don’t think it hurts the chemistry of the team to look for upgrades in special teams/backups. And, all other things being equal, you want your depth to be young, because it allows for the possibility that they may become starters at some point.

Don’t get me wrong—I have plenty of concerns about this team, more perhaps than I did when camp started, but Charlie Anderson or Charles Grant or Douglass are not among them. The term replacement level players exists for a reason.

Every move is unique unto itself though, wouldn't you agree?

So just to plainly say what happened, 2 proven NFL vets who were playing well for us were dropped for 2 unproven cast offs from teams in worse shape than us. That is undeniably a questionable move that could definitely hurt us, we have no reliable depth at DE now.

Picking up a 5th ILB for our only back up WLB is also questionable, how do they affect the team, who knows, but it is certainly questionable.

Not as a backup DE as our roster is currently configured.

He’s the starting noseguard. He’s a terrific DE, but I don’t think you can count him as depth at that position.

Ooops.

I meant Starks, obviously.

I do think McDaniel is a solid DE backup.

As Urbino said,

Starks is our starting NT, he is not in the DE rotation so McDaniel is the only proven depth, and he was behind Merling last year.

You really think Starks doesnt move back to end if Langford or Odrick go down?

I think he does.

But I don’t think you can count that as depth, because he can only play one position at a time. If he moves to DE, then we’re thin at NG. Either way, we’re thin somewhere along the D-line; it’s just a question of where you want to count people.

McDaniel is a good player which is why we let Douglas go. The bad thing on releasing Grant is it put ALOT of pressure on Odrick to get to the QB. Then how important is it for your 3-4 ends to get pressure.

I agree Finster. I don't understand getting Carpenter.

Look at it this way. Carpenter was a #1 draft pick who couldn’t crack the starting lineup for a team in need of a ILB. The Cowboys signed an over the hill Zach Thomas instead of Carpenter. The Cowboys signed an over the hill Keith Brookings instead of Carpenter.

Carpenter is not a good player. I don’t get the signing.

Atlanta thought he was over the hill and let him walk. He signed a 3 year deal with the Cowboys for $6 million.

That’s peanuts. What that contract says is that noboby wanted him and he took a minimum offer. Why would nobody want him? Because many considered him not a very good player yet he was someone that the Cowboys still wanted over Carpenter.

I'm assuming Moses is Wake's backup now

even if the official depth chart doesn’t reflect it. Is Anderson a better player than Moses? I’m not sure, honestly. But I don’t believe Rose and Geathers are better than Grant and Douglas—but they are younger, and cheaper, and could maybe become better given some time to grow in this system—and if the difference between them isn’t that large, go with the younger, cheaper option and hope to develop them—as long as you are talking about backups, not starters.

And McDaniel was always going to be the primary backup anyway—he was fantastic in that role last season, and will be again.

He's listed as such, yes--I said that

but you don’t think he would swing over to Wake’s spot should he go down, or need a rest? We have four outside backers. Acknowledging that Ike is the wrong skill set for the weak side, and that Koa is a rookie with enough on his plate, that seems to leave Moses as the default option.

Dude,

He is not a WLB, there is a different skill set, Moses is a runstopper, not a passrusher, we don’t have a WLB back up.

What???

Did you mean who rushes the passer from the weak side if Wake gets injured? Because that is exactly what I’m saying.

SLBs are runstoppers, WLBs are passrushers, if you can get some passrushing from your SLB ala Woodley, great, thats all gravy, but putting pressure on the QB is what the WLB is all about, and now we don’t have one to back up Wake.

Like players haven't turned it around before?

Who says a player can’t turn it around after being released from another team because they couldn’t crack the final 53 man unit? Plenty of players have turned it around from other teams. If other teams scraps could never become good players, Wes Welker never wouldn’t have turned into a great player when Miami got him off the Chargers’ practice squad. Same goes for Greg Camarillo. I’m not saying Carpenter is going to turn into some great LB, but I do think there is a chance he can be an adequate depth LB and special teams player.

Another reason to not believe he can’t be decent because the Rams dumped him is the Dolphins play a much different defense than STL does.

but you dump a BETTER player to sign this guy who has failed in 2 locations now….

Another possibility

Miami is preparing for the return of the salary cap next season and are trying to dump heavier contracts now to avoid the penalties, thus allowing Miami more salary cap space when it returns.

by Finhead83 on Sep 7, 2010 12:39 AM EDT up reply actions

not really

any of these contracts could be terminated at any point during this season without effecting any potential cap…
however per the CBA that they are currently operating under …. if the player is on the roster for game 1 then that players contract is guaranteed for the current year….

so this doesn’t come across as planing for next season but for making sure if they need to reduce payroll in a hurry they can.
