The Dolphin Churn
With the latest turn of events since the final cuts, we now have 20 new players on the team since last years final cuts. Does this seem excessive to you or are we still in the rebuilding phase of the 3 year project? I know we were just 1-15 just 3 short years ago, but i thought we had a good necleus last year, we just happended to be bitten by the injury bug, imho.
Of the 20 new players, 9 are offense and the other 11 on the defense side of the ball. I can understand the turn rate on the defense with our trouble last year, but that is almost half of that unit being replaced. Is that something to worry about. I think so. Will these guys take time to get used to each other, do we have the time to let this happen?
We now have (10) Rookies and (10) 2nd year players on the team. That is pretty young...

I like that the front office recognizes mistakes, we won 7 games last year so its not like we had a perfect roster…

they definitely have made their shares of mistakes
but at least they move on when needed. 40 % of the team is new, it will be pretty amazing if they all come together.

It's a foxhole mentality.
They come together because they all want to keep their jobs.

Trifecta
This regime is sending the message that they’re running out of patience. If you’re not a solid starter on this team, you’d better be on notice. As Sparano himself said to his team after last season, “7-9 is not good enough”. This team is going to constantly need to upgrade and frankly, none of the guys waived broke my heart. The way I look at it, if you weren’t good enough to start for a 7-9 team let’s get some other bodies in here who can compete. It’ a cold business but that’s the way it is. I’ve been a loyal fan since 1966 and it kills me that we havn’t won the big one since the ‘73 season. So I say let’s keep the turnstyle turning down at camp until we find the guys that can win.

I don't think they're running out of patience..
They never had any to start with.
That’s been their SOP from day one. Work hard, show total commitment and above all produce or “see ya.” This team will always run a little scared because they will always know if they don’t cut it on the field they’re gone.
We can debate the pro’s and cons of this approach as a motivational technique but the FO is entirely committed to “churning” the roster. We’re going to see this every year…maybe not 20, but I doubt of the number of new faces will ever dip below 10.

I would hope they were better at player evaluation
so that doesn’t happen, normally good teams don’t change that many players.

If you look at the 49rs under Walsh
And even the Patriots in the last 10 years, they were both pretty ruthless about their personnel decisions. The turn-over is higher than you’d think. It’s an approach some good teams have used effectively.
The difference is they don’t think of the players they release as mistakes, just parts they no longer need or can upgrade.

depending on the FO and if they are rebuilding it will increase dramatically

Those teams were definitely not known for huge changes every year,
yes they were ruthless but they weren’t changing out so many people, they didn’t need to.

Just an example - 1988-1990 49'ers
In 1988 the 49’rs went 10-6 and won the Super Bowl
That offseason they replaced 14 players on their 57 player roster
In 1989 they went 14-2, won the Super Bowl and then replaced 17 players from their 57 player roster.
In 1990 they went 14-2 and lost the conference championship.

that's interesting
maybe we arent so far off track. Maybe all the new guys come in hungry and push the starters to even higher expectations. It would be interesting to see how many injuries the 49ers had in those years.

I like it, our o-line looked awful this preseason.
and we cut the only guy who was decent along the interior. So i don’t mind getting new lineman
