Let's have a discussion about Vontae Davis and Sean Smith.

By this time last year many Dolphin's fans were picking sides between Vontae Davis and Sean Smith. It reminded me of the thinking of the average woman, because most were siding with Smith because he's tall. Anyway, Smith beat out Vontae last year because he was "on fire" and he made that one handed interception during preseason. None of the teams wanted to take a chance on Smith so they constantly picked on Vontae. However, by the end of the year,  Vontae had much better stats than Smith, with 4 interceptions and 53 tackles vs. 0 interceptions and 38 tackles. Vontae's year was better all around especially with those big plays in Buffalo and in New England against Randy Moss.

My point is this, I think that Vontae took his lumps last year, and that has helped him take the next step, where Sean Smith's progress was stifled because he wasn't challenged as much last season. This is not to say that Smith will not rebound from this funk that he's in, its just something that I saw coming.

Totally Agree

and the demotion from starter sends a clear message, in which I think he will respond in a big way. Great observation, Aussie.

Vontae is a hungry beast though

I wished that the remaining 10 starters shared his appetite.

Well then he needs to rise up and become a leader and allow some of that fire to become infectious.

I think he will

Look at his brother vernon in san fran, calling crabtree out on his work ethics by getting in his face. Imo,the media overhyped that one big time,if I remember correctly, didnt jason taylor do that last year, and we all applauded him for his leadership

Yeah it only gets pointed out because Vernon has had some other issues. JT has never had any.

Yeah I get that and I prefer the older vets be the leaders in general but he could make a huge difference.

Oh and not much. Just watching SMU/T Tech. Surprisingly SMU is hanging in there.

June Jones is like Saban. A genius at the college level and an also-ran at the pro level.

Their styles just match up better in the collegiate ranks.

Yes but its one thing to turn around Bama where you can legitimately recruit

the top talent in the country and turning around an afterthought of a school like SMU. I would like to see what JJ would do at a top notch school.

to tutor Vontae in our secondary. I think BM will be his biggest mentor.

I honestly think Vontae is going to be a star in the league

I forget where I saw it but if you look at his rookie year stats, they are comparable, and even slightly better than, those of Darelle Revis. I mean, I’ll take that alright. The guy got beat like any rookie would, but man, some of the stuff he already has you just can’t teach.

Sean Smith seems like he’s on the verge of a sophmore slump. It’s funny, because I remember going into last season everyone thought Smith was going to be great and Vontae was going to be Jason Allen with character issues, but it does seem like Smith’s regressed. I think it may be more of a mental issue with him than anything else though. And at the same time, he still seems like he’s gonna be a solid NFL corner, just not elite like Vontae can be.

In summation, I just want to say I’m excited to watch the best tandem we’ve had since madison and surtain. And honestly, these guys have the chance to be even better!

after a series of good plays.

a true #1 will make plays no matter who is on the opposite side. The CB’s job, in that case, is to minimize impact.

hmm, i'd rather have a sure tackler like Bell then a big hitter like VD.

Going for the big hit can have disastrous consequences, while a perfect form tackle has none.

Ive been a Vontae guy since the begining but...

Seeing one of them slipping takes away that competitive fire I had rooting for Davis over Smith. That sense of team kicks in and I hope he bounces back strong. Healthy competition is one thing but the big picture has always been the TANDEM.

Ted Marshall?

What does everyone think about this Sapp guy then?

Why trade a solid WR like Camarillo for him. Do we plan on starting him or improving over Jason Allen and Sean Smith. Also where would Will Allen fall , when he gets healthy.

by pj521 on Sep 5, 2010 9:11 PM EDT reply actions

Nickel.

We need a nickel cornerback; the FO clearly knew that Will Allen’s recovery was either stalling or that it wasn’t going to occur this season.

Benny Sapp is not a good outside CB, but he can hold his own in the slot. Between him and Nolan Carroll, our 0.05 is going to be A-OK even after losing the vet.

Gonna take a fortnight at least to get this herd down to St. Louis on Mississippi. This glen's gonna be tough to traverse, and that river's got to be 50, 60 meters wide. And God knows how many fathoms. To hell with parliamentary procedure. We've got to wrangle up some cattles!

by Dave.Phuller on Sep 5, 2010 10:07 PM EDT up reply actions

^^THIS...

Also, remember this had to do with how we had 3 young WRs that were battling for one spot. That move also allowed us to keep 2 instead of 1. That is assuming that they hadn’t already beat out Camarillo in Sparano’s mind anyway. They are 2 young guys with a lot of upside. They both looked really good in the preseason.

when does the season start.....

Get over the Cam trade

He is gone and was soild nothing great but good. We have plenty of Cams on our team, what we dont have is CBs and we need them. Plus he is a ST player that is good , we also need that. BS is need more than Cam is needed here.Cam will do well out there better than here, so everybody wins. Who are you going to start Cam over? Hartline.. Please!! BH is just as good if not better and bigger. We need to move on from this and worry about the DE problem and the CB issue we have!!

Sometimes

The light comes on when the pads do,and sometimes it comes on when games start to matter. Look at marshall, few dropped passes, but he gets a pass for what? Hes proven? Hes proven he can connect and make the big play in denver, but here, well to put it bluntly, hes making 8 mil to make plays. He shoulda been doin it already.

Hartline marshall bess and our young guys will be fine, the key is henne, people tend to forget hes got alot more weight on his shoulders this year, and cam, well he got lost in the shuffle, and its better we traded him now before he became a progress stopper, people tend to forget that when you have so much youth, the best thing to do is split reps, and honestly, while hes proven, every rep would have taken away another opportunity for one of our young guys to get a relationship goin with the qb.

Ill be honest, its a lil too early to be all doom and gloom Bout the trade, maybe sapp shines here, who knows? Obviously the fo saw something in the kid. Or imo he wouldnt be here

by dolphinfan4lyfe on Sep 6, 2010 12:57 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions

Smith has been struggling learning the new techniques associated with Nolan's coverages.

He said as much in an article in the Miami Herald not too long ago. With those struggles it looks like he has lost confidence. Hopefully he gets it back sooner rather than later because the Phins DB’s are the biggest question mark going into the season, IMO.

I don’t have any faith in Allen, Sapp, or Clemons right now. And now it sounds like those 3 will be playing together in nickel situations. That is a scary thought!

Clemons is doing fine right now...

He isn’t a Pro Bowler yet, but he really doesn’t have to do much to be better than the big gaping hole we had at FS last year. If he doesn’t give up every big play, but stops a few of them, we win more games than we did last year. Add to that a swarming offensive minded defense in front of him forcing bad throws… I think we will be just fine there this year.
Jason Allen is the starter only in name. If you watched he was pulled after a series or 2. I think the move is more of a motivational tool. Sean Smith has talked about how he started all 16 games last year. This is a move to let him know that Vontae is winning the competition at this point. He is no longer the best CB from that draft. Hopefully, he gets motivated and stops making the dumb rookie mistakes that keep getting him burned.

when does the season start.....
