2010 NFL Cuts: Reports say Dolphins have cut Pat White, Patrick Turner & David Martin; others as well

PrintThough we have nothing official from the team as of right now, there are reports trickling out that the Dolphins have indeed cut QB Pat White, WR Patrick Turner, and G Donald Thomas - as well as some others.
Here's what we know right now. Mike Berardino tweets that ESPN is reporting the Dolphins have cut Pat White. He's working to confirm that now. Ben Volin of the Palm Beach Post, though, is confirming White's release. Meanwhile, Berardino confirms that Patrick Turner - who, like White, was a 2009 draft pick - as well as Donald Thomas have been cut. He also reports that defensive lineman Lionel Dotson and offensive tackle Andrew Gardner have been given their release.
ESPN's Chris Mortensen and Adam Schefter do confirm the White story, too. Mort even goes on to say that this decisions was probably known for weeks. The cutting of Turner and Thomas is a bit more surprising. It probably means that Cory Procter will make the team along the offensive line while both Marlon Moore and Roberto Wallace - two undrafted free agent receivers - will be receivers four and five on Miami's depth chart.
Outside linebacker Erik Walden has also been released. The National Football Post adds that rookie LB Austin Spitler has also been waived.
The Miami Herald reports that WR Julius Pruitt has been waived. But the team hopes he will clear waivers so they can re-sign him to their practice squad. Interesting to note that Jeff Darlington has been told that Roberto Wallace is actually head of Marlon Moore on the team's depth chart. I guess we'll know for sure when we see which - if any - are inactive on game day in Buffalo next weekend.
Darlington also tells us that J.D. Folsom and Ryan Baker have been cut. Baker, though, is a prime practice squad candidate. This all but confirms that Micah Johnson has made the team.
Perhaps the biggest surprise of the day is the release of TE David Martin. It was reported earlier in the day by WQAM and since confirmed by Martin's agent. Though I admit I'm surprised by this one, it might make some sense. The Dolphins can cut Martin and then re-sign him after week one, making his 2010 salary not guaranteed. This could also be a sign that the Dolphins like John Nalbone and want to hold him for another week before sneaking him through waivers and back onto their practice squad. Nalbone is now the only tight end on the roster behind Anthony Fasano. The Dolphins could have poached a tight end who has been released by another team. So keep an eye on this story to see how it unfolds. I don't think it's over just yet.

if no one picks him up what happens then?
Im sure someone will grab him but what happens to a player if he is released and no one grabs him? Obviously he looks for other work but do you think the FO keeps ties with him? Ive heard they have a good releationship with a CFL team or something.. do youthink they help White find work there?

he definetly has the athleticism/intangibles to warrant a roster spot for a 3rd string QB. He will DEF be picked up. He could definelty get a chance to thrive in a high powered offense with alot of playmakers. I can see him going to SD, MINN, DAL or KC.

most likely they won't hit until very late
since it is likely that the FO wants both for the PS and will try to hide them…. by dropping them at the last minute. (and they are most likely working out PS deals while they are still at the facilities.

since in 2008, when we got Pennington, we then proceeded to lose the very first game of the season to the Jets. Sure we won the final game in NY, which was incredibly fun in case anyone has forgotten….but they were playing Favre so it wasn’t as if they had the same system anyway..

but the end result was the same…. he couldn’t pass block because he was slow to react….
and i know sparano singled him out early in camp as one who needed to work on consistency in both practice and game play.

you just picked up sapp… the most likely target (or maybe 2nd most likely)
carroll and smith are too young to give up on (although, if davis is healthy – i’d guess allen starts for smith vs buffalo)
and then maybe will allen but you need senior leadership and they would have kept garner around if they didn’t plan on waiting for allen.

No complaints, so far.
The Thomas and Gardner cuts bother me, but not because it’s Thomas and Gardner. Like I said during the draft, we should not be seeing this much turnover in the O-line in the 3rd year of a rebuild, especially not when our prez is supposed to have a great eye for the big uglies and our head coach is an O-line coach. And now we’re extremely thin along the front, again.
Aside from that, though, I’ve got no beef with any of the cuts. I thought Turner was clearly outplayed by both Moore and Wallace, and White was a very distant 4th at the QB position. I’ve never seen anything from David Martin, and didn’t understand why in the world we re-signed him in the first place.
Donald Thomas really must have done something to piss off this team
No reason for him to get when he excels in run blocking and really hasnt played that much football. Gardner gets cut since we brought in Pat McQuistan

Nalbone is a better blocker and Martin has shown nada in the pass catching

Fasano is serviceable though. Perhaps Thomas out of NO is available. Considering they already have Shocley, and drafted Graham, I don’t see why not.

I don’t see any resemblance, besides a big arm. George’s problem was his mental instability. He was just too flaky and narcissistic to be any kind of team leader, much less reliable. I don’t see that in Henne. At. All.

George loved to throw deep, as I recall. He ran up huge numbers in games he showed up mentally for. But his teammates hated him, and he didn’t care. That was his problem.

I don't see Henne in that class, either.
His arm is strong enough, but he doesn’t quite have that magic that Marino and, when he was right, George had.
Watching those guys, you knew they could put the ball absolutely anywhere they wanted, anytime they wanted, and no defense could do a darn thing about it. (Marino, especially. He had that to a degree I’ve never seen in anybody else.)
I’m trying to think of a better comparison for Henne. Phil Simms comes to mind. Not the way they play the game, but just sort of the class of qb. Henne isn’t there, yet, obviously, but he has the potential to be a Simms-level qb. I don’t see Marino in him.

wasn’t that he didn’t prepare for games, per se. It was that he was just an absolutely self-absorbed asshat who didn’t give a crap about anybody but him. You just never knew what the guy was thinking, from one moment to the next.

I do think Cutler has shown flashes of that kind of physical tools, but when I say I see Jeff George in him, I just mean that he’s a qb with great physical tools but is too flaky to make good use of them.

My nerves were shot after that game
Great comeback and our QB looks like he has finally “got it”. But defense looks rough. Our CBs are not that great. Our front 7 looks good against the run, but needs more of a pass rush.

martin will be back
didn’t think it through when i made my roster predictions …. but david martin is a vet and is entitled to a full year guaranteed contract if he was on the roster for game 1. With everyone in the martin camp surprised by the move… i suspect that the fins are just playing it safe with a guy who missed most of camp and is coming off an injury who wasn’t in top football shape….
so they cut him now… save 750k and then if he isn’t picked up…. the can offer him a contract right after the bills game (in fact the same contract and not be on the hook in case he doesn’t work out)
just didn’t think that one through.

Seems backwards to me.
If this was just a contract management thing, I would think the team would stay in touch with Martin’s agent. If you want the guy back, don’t you play straight with his agent? Let them know the plan?
who knows....
i suspect they tell the player and let it work back to the agent…
or they call the agent in a couple of days when they aren’t matching the WW with their scouting reports…
or imagine this … they already told the agent this and he told the phish wraps something else… i know, i know and agent telling the press something that isn’t exactly true seems incredulous, but it does happen.
