OFFENSE vs DEFENSE
…"While there haven’t been many Super Bowl winners that were defensive slouches, a recent study that analyzed the past three NFL seasons shows a team’s offensive ability is 61% more crucial to winning games than its defensive prowess. The study says offense makes up 52% of a team’s victories while defense is worth 32%—this discrepancy is due partially to the league wide increase in passing-game accuracy."
This article confirms what I already believe – that the Miami Dolphins need to focus more on the offense, adding additional playmakers next year, AND "opening up" the playbook. Offense has the advantage in today’s’ NFL with all the rule changes, and specifically the passing game. I know – some of you will say "We are a running team" and that’s correct – but where has it gotten us ? Any playoff victories lately ? Does anyone remember the year Ricky Williams won the rushing title ? How far did we go that year in the playoffs ?
With a rifle-armed QB in Chad Henne, wide receivers: Brandon Marshall, Davone Bess, Brian Hartline, & Anthony Fasano at TE this team COULD pass effectively a lot more than we do. There is NO DEFENSE for the perfect pass, or have you forgotten how devastating Dan Marino was in his prime ?
I suggest you watch the vaunted ’1985 Chicago Bears vs Miami Dolphins Monday night game if you disagree. Marino carved up one of the best defenses EVER with his accurate passing and quick release. Plus, BRANDON MARSHALL is more talented than either Mark Duper or Mark Clayton, so this team has a great chance to be a "special" passing offense – if we would JUST open things up !
We don’t have to completely disdain the run – but let’s set it up with the PASS for a change !
Personally, I think we might need a new Offensive coordinator. Dan Henning really hasn’t show me very much in his time here so far. I am content to give him one more year – but at the present - We are very vanilla, and continue to run, run, run, and throw short most of the time. We simply don’t score enough points, period. This will never beat the better teams, much less get us to the super bowl.
It’s time to open things up and see what we have in Chad Henne !
