Dolphins sign tight end David Martin

Former Dolphin missed 2009 with knee injury

The 6-foot-4, 265-pound Martin, a nine-year pro, had his two most productive NFL seasons with the Dolphins after signing a three-year contract as a free agent in 2007. Brought in after Randy McMichael was released, he had 34 catches for 319 yards and two touchdowns his first season, then 31 passes for 450 yards and three touchdowns as the Dolphins' second tight end behind Anthony Fasano in 2008.

Not sure what to make

of this move. I have a hard time believeing he is completely healthy again. But one thing it does tell me is that the staff isn’t happy with Nalbone. He was playing with the 2nd team, and plays a similar style to Martin. If Nalbone was getting the job done I don’t think we would bring Martin. Still wish we coulda got Pitta in this year’s draft.

I'm in the same boat as you VAN

I’m excited to have him back if he is healthy…..I don’t think the dolphins Organization would’ve signed him if he wasn’t 100 percent. But martin, fasano, haynos ……not bad. Martin is a great Run blocker…by far the best of the three. Glad to have him back…can’t argue with bringing depth to the roster. Sorry nalbone….

Martin

I’d say Fasano is still the best run blocker on the TEs actually. Martin is intriguing because he is still a good run blocker, but also has some receiving ability as well. What I’m not sure about is if he can still reproduce for Miami like he did before his injury and first release from the Dolphins. I would not be surprised if Martin is our #2 TE, but I also will not be surprised if he is cut. What will surprise me is if he becomes Miami’s #1 TE.

Would love to see Martin in there on passing downs.

Miami Dolphin fan since 1971. Ricky Williams for starting RB! Brandon Marshall will pick #19?? Trust the TRIUMVERATE!! Chad Henne will be the next Miami Dolphins QB to win a Super Bowl.

unspoken weakness

Fasano is not the answer. Look at the jets, colts, even the vikings. TE’s need to get down the field and occupy the safety. Fasano is an above average blocker but an average receiver at best. Was hoping for an upgrade in the draft. Martin is a stopgap but we need to address this big time.

Martin

I wouldn’t think for a moment the signing of Martin is more of an indicator for Nalbone and Haynos, not Fasano. I don’t t hink the front office is considering having Martin start, but he’s there to light a fire under Nalbone and Haynos. Fasano fits the style of play Miami’s front office likes.

Right! this FO perfect TE is like Whitten.

A big run blocker that can also catch. not the other way around.

oh man he dropped a McMichael reference on us, lol

I’m still curious if they were forced to drop someone to make this signing. I’m thinking that the way Sheets was taken care of that a spot opened but I’m not sure. I know Merling and Edds were put straight to IR so they count but Sheets I think they handled differently.

I wouldn’t bank too much on David Martin. Hopefully he works out but I see this more as a call to Sperry and Nalbone to poop or get off the pot. Martin has been unsigned since he left here and this is the first I’ve heard his name mentioned in a while. Guys like that don’t normally just come out of nowhere to make an impact. Be reasonable, let him compete with Nalbone and Sperry and then maybe overtake Haynos.

Appreciate a generous owner, accomplished VP, strong GM and fair coach

Agreed...

If “my favorite Martin” was that good, why was he still available? And did he recover enough to still be effective…

Teams may have passed on him earlier because he was still rehabbing. Also I think he may

have a better rep with us as far as what he can do than with the rest of the NFL.

Martin played solid when he was with us

Took some monster hits after the catch across the middle and always held on. Glad to see him back. Maybe this will help bring back Fasano’s production to the year he played with Martin.
