my 53 man roster - finally got around to writing it up
Ok – here’s my 53 man roster projection…
I may update this a little after the dallas game, which will have an impact on the bubble players but likely won’t move the core numbers around. It’s usually a fun exercise to get a feel for how to put together a roster and some of the tough decisions that do need to be made. Now all of this is made tougher by the lack of information out there on the long term injuries to w allen, nate garner, & now C Crowder… and yes, the testing of Anderson to ILB and moving Misi to the weak side makes me believe that the team is creating a plan for and extended absence by CC…
Offense
QB (3) – Starter – Henne….
Back-ups – Penne & thiggy
Henne sure looks the part at times… heck he’s even shown an ability to take some off the ball on occasion this camp... that said (and I am a believer) I think he is still a season away from being a SB level QB… which is ok since the defense looks to be a year away also… but the light does appear to be getting brighter…
Pat White’s surprise play in game 3 makes me believe that the team would like to trade on of their 2 backups and not give up on pat just yet, but I don’t know if that will happen… QB I’d most like to see go Penne – likely most value and least long term value. Thiggy will more then likely be the one because of his age. If they do keep White, I would like to see the team do things with him that make short QB’s better… (ie the flutie offense)… roll him out more… push the middle open… and maybe, just maybe, at least once during his career run a spread offense with him….
RB –(4) Starter Ronnie Brown
Backups/starter – Williams, Cobbs, & Polite
Pretty easy group… the only hiccup is if the team feels Hilliard provides enough ST value to keep an extra back… my guess is no and I expect the team to sign one or two FA for the practice squad to eat practice reps and hopefully develop into a replacement for this OLD unit.
TE – (2) Starter Fassano/Martin
Backup – None
Didn’t think Haynos was going to make the team before the injury (surprising because I was a supporter last year) but martin’s skill set was missing from last year’s team and neither Haynos nor Nalbone match it…so they’ll go with 2 and see if they can get Nalbone on the PS… if not they’ll check out the WW and FA for a PS member.
WR (6)– Starters Marshall/Hartline
Backup – Bess, Moore
Backup bubble – Wallace & Turner ….. pruitt
When you only keep two TE’s nor the luxury 5th back, you get to keep an extra WR… and the physical potential at WR far outreaches the potential of either the 5th back or 3rd TE… but if there is a waiver wire acquisition then Wallace & Turner are the bubble boys… Moore’s running with the firsts pretty much means he’s the 4th, but the upside of Wallace is much higher and neither him nor turner are likely to be available for the PS if they are cut… they will be poached. Pruitt is PS possible if they team loses turner or Wallace. If I was rating right now – I’d go with this order Wallace – Moore – Turner… but I’m unencumbered by external factors (some relevant – personalities, some not – draft status) and I expect the team rates them Turner – Moore – Wallace….
O-Line (10)
Starters – Long, Garner, Grove, Incognito, Carey
Backups – Jerry & Berger
Bubble Subs in cut order – Procter, Murtha, & Thomas
Missing the team not on the bubble – Gardner – bad, bad, bad camp … after a great camp last year and making the team he played himself off the team no idea what happened to him… hartline – I haven’t seen what the coaches seem to…
If Garner isn’t healthy they will take 9… if Garner is healthy enough to make the roster it is very possible that they keep 9 and Thomas would be the guy I expect them to cut…
Defense
D-Line (8)
Starters – Langford, Starks, Odrick
Backups – Grant, Soliai, McDaniel
Bubble backups in cut order – Douglas, Dotson ……. Baker, Staley
This is a battle that will be decided against dallas… Dotson has always shined in the fourth game… and has shown a knack for making big plays… Baker has shown an ability to get penetration, has versatility, but also consistently gets pushed back… Douglas and Staley are vets… Staley I can’t say I’ve noticed and am not a 100% sure he’s still around… but the team knows what they will get with douglas… BTW it is possible they keep 9 here if they are concerned about possible NFL suspensions to Grant (4 game star caps limbo & off field behavior issues)
LB (8)
Starters – Alama-Francis, Dansby, Crowder, Wake
Backups – Misi, Anderson, & Dobbins
Bubble Backup Micah Johnson
Bubble in cut order if Crowder is seriously hurt …. Walden, Folsom, & Spitler
Won’t make the team - Moses
Micah, while I have on the bubble has made the team… he has the size the team likes and while they do clock players at the combine …. He’s and example of why they should clock them with their pads on because he moves well even with a slow 40 time… the final roster spot on the team likely comes down to J Allen vs. E Walden – both are ST aces… and if W Allen is going to be kept on the active roster, then one of the STers may have to go. Folsom making the team is not out of the question… he seems to move well and understands his position, but i haven’t “FELT” him out there… but then none of the bubble guys have shown much…Moses while he has shown some potential to make plays… an injury in camp has likely doomed him… plus the no team uses every pick in their last draft on a LB if you are happy with what you have.
D-Backs (9)
Starters – V Davis, W Allen, Clemons, Bell
Back-ups – S Smith, N Carroll, Sapp, Culver
Bubble – in cut order – J Allen, ……. R Jones, Amaya, & Ness
All of this is predicated on W Allen being healthy… if not move everyone up one spot.
Jones hasn’t looked good in the preseason and I suspect they will gamble that he will fall through to the practice squad and if not Amaya will, and they will feel comfortable having one development/backup there… Culver is a capable back-up for safety and W Allen is the wild card there… I supect that Carroll will make a move into at least a time share very soon (dime coverage) and then will move up the chart if he flashes… Smith has looked poor since about ½ way through last season… frequently getting beaten deep and run support has always been a weakness… I’m not saying that all is lost for him… I’m just saying that he looks like the 3rd best long term option at CB for the teams (davis… Carroll) and a demotion is in the very near future for him….I just don’t see Smith ending the season as the starter. As I stated earlier the battle for the 53rd spot is likely between walden and J Allen and Allen’s standing has little to do with what position he plays …
STers (3) I’ll let you all figure it out…
But for the life of me – I really do not understand how or why they can’t get a berger, garner, or grove to be the LSer and have greater roster flexibility…
Last 5 on #49Murtha, #50Johnson, #51Dotson ,#52Thomas,#53 J Allen
First 5 cut – #54Walden, #55 R Jones,#56 Nalbone,#57 Baker,#58 Douglas

Good write-up,
though I disagree with J. Allen making the team over Jones. Reshad has turned into a ST gem, which is all Jason Allen had going for him, plus Reshad actually still has upside. Jason Allen’s time with the Miami Dolphins will soon be coming to a close.

yes/no
as i wrote up – i don’t think Allen’s or walden’s position will have any value at this point other then as a STer….
and Jones has been alright, be he isn’t Allen on ST… plus his value as a DB is less then allen’s… there is no way you could play him in a game right now and expect to do well… couple that with the fact that he will make it to the practice squad and jones will go.
(unless of course w allen is IR’d)

Here's the difference though....
Allen is a CB and Jones is a safety. We’ll carry 4 safeties like last season, a backup for each spot. So if Jones doesn’t make it, then we’ll carry 3 safeties and 6 CBs. That would limit our defense for the sake of special teams. Jones will get ST reps and backup FS reps as well. Benny Sapp is a veteran CB who can play the nickel effectively. He is also a good ST player. His acquisition makes J. Allen obsolete. The fact that Jones is improving on ST makes him that much more obsolete. When W. Allen returns, that will give us 3 CBs who can play effectively on the outside (Davis, Smith, and W. Allen) and three nickel CBs (W. Allen, Sapp, and Carroll). I see no reason for J. Allen to remain unless he can improve his CB skills.

he does play pretty well on the boundary though.
he held Moss to like 1 catch for 8 yds.

not really
if you figure he and/or amaya make the practice squad then you have your 4th/5th Safety to use for a roster move…
and once again how many times do you need a 4th safety in a game… (never)…. and if Jones was forced to play … well lets just say he’s not NFL ready yet….. so if it came down to it… you would shift over say an allen or sapp or heck even jason allen.
so you go with the best STer … and develop the other guy on the PS

Culver and Clemons were the backups last year, and both saw game time regularly
Miami carried 4 safeties last season on the active roster. Clemons played ST last year.
It all comes back to value. Sapp is a good ST player and Jones is improving as a ST player. Sapp can play nickel and emergency starter at CB while being a good ST player. Once WA returns, he’ll be able to play nickel or start if necessary. Carroll can be the emergency nickel guy, but will lock up a spot because of ST and KR. JA can’t play nickel and is at best average at starter.
So if you look at it, JA is the 5th CB who’ll see game time only as a ST player.

Until Will Allen is fully healthy....
Jason Allen is Davis and Smith’s backup. We don’t really know how they’ll handle Will Allen’s return. Chances are, when Will Allen is 100%, he’ll be the starting nickel back and the #1 back up for Davis and Smith. But I’m inclined to believe if Smith or Davis go down and we face a 3 or 4 WR set, Will Allen will move to the slot and Jason Allen will play the boundary.

ok - just heard garner was IR'd
so i’m going to have to change things up a little for now…
move jerry in at RG and Incognito at LG … Still not sure Thomas will stick …. but they will pick up vet off waivers FA now…
i’ll have to see the Dallas game, but i may go with 3 TE and only 9 o-line…

Ill just chime in on the Henne/Penne/Thiggy/White aspect here.
1st off who is the odd name up there? Sound them out.. HennEEE, PenEEE, ThigEEE, then WHITE.
LOL its as simple as that right?
Seriously, I am not sure that Henne give us the best chance to make a run this season. Yes stone me now but seriously we do not have a deep threat any longer so why do we need the cannon arm? Ok Ok b4 the stoning commences hear me out.
Who give us the best chance to get to and go into the playoffs ? If healthy I believe CP10 is the best to run the offense that the Phins want to run. He is the most accurate passer in the NFL, He is one of the smartest QB’s in the NFL, CP10 is better at play action and moving around the pocket and avoiding sacks. CP10 doesnt need a huge arm when you have players as big as Marshall, Fasano and Martin. Also add into the mix Bess in the slot and even Hartline would be better off with less “mustard” on the ball most of the time. Henne may one day be a real good QB but he is still far from it at this point so why not play the QB who gives the team the best shopt at winning with the players you have around him? Of course this all means nothing if his arm is not able to hold up..
Dont get me wrong I want Henne to be the next Marino but I dont see it happening. His reads take way too long, he stares down his targets and does not go through his progressions fast enough which means he is sacked more and throws bad throws more to get out of trouble or takes a sack more. Also his throwing motion is really really an issue. No one ever really talked about it much but his “wind up” is about as long as a golf swing. im not sold on Henne yet.. so back to what I said b4..
If CP10’s arm is 100% doesnt he give us the best chance for wins this season?
Henne is the QB of the Miami Dolphins.

wow you pasta lovers just dont give up?
which is just another reason the noodle arm needs to be sent packing….
but seriously – do you see anyway the phins could be a jets team with penne at QB? or the steelers? or the ravens? … the reality is you have to have a QB who can make every pass or you can’t beat teams with the best defenses…
and do i think Henne is going to lead them to the superbowl this year… no – not really, but then i don’t think even if they had P manning the defense is superbowl caliber right now…. both henne and the D need a year of experience… QB’s take time to learn their craft and they need to play in order to learn…
now all that said, if i had to rank the QB’s in terms of the teams chances to make the playoffs with them behind the helm… it is easily Henne…. 60-75% thiggy…. 35-50%…. penne @ 20-30% (hey brady could get hurt again) and patty @ 5% (why beat a guy when he’s down)

You really think that CP10 has a worse chance to bring us wins then Thiggy?
I would rather have another playoff game with CP10 leading us this season then a 7-9 season with Henne. Just sayin.. I think CP10 can get us to the playoffs again with the guys we have on the 0 right now. I dont know if henne can. Henne shows flashes of being very tallented then he shows flashes of being not so good. Again I point out the sacks.. is it lack of protection? Sure but its also lack of a even slighty quick release and lack of reading the defense. Even when he gets good at his reads he is still going to have that softball (upside down) wind up. Its a freaking wind mill. Then his receiver reads are not fast enough yet. Maybe that will be fixed with time.. Im sure it will be but the windmill wind up will never be fixed with any ammount of time.
Henne is the QB of the Miami Dolphins.

We were 0-3 with Pennington as a starter
We might have actually made the playoffs if they would have started Henne from the beginning. And we’ll never actually win a playoff game with Pennington, even if he manages to make it through the season without shattering.
You are espousing a

yes
thiggy can at least move around against the best defenses and make something happen….
the noodle arm has lost the last 4 games he’s started… and it’s no accident since they were all playoff teams…
so if you want to win the NFC west … well Penne is the guy to do it… if you want to make the playoffs in the AFC … you HAVE to have a QB that can make every pass on the field… and most importantly you have to make passes to the sidelines 15 yards downfield in order to open up the run game and take pressure out of the middle of the field.

Okay this may not be a popular opinion but we arent close to winning a SuperBowl
I would rather Henne take his lumps this year and see where were at with this offense. He will be our QB of the future of this I have no doubt. I am doubting the overall talent of our team however. Its alot better now than it was last year but we still have a couple more off-seasons to go before we become perennial contenders

I like it man! Rec'd
i would not be unhappy to see us keep 6 WRs on the 53, with Pruitt on the PS.
With Wallace and Turner’s size, you could almost like em up in th eslot and have em block down on the LBs or DEs like a TE.
i also think Douglas makes it, and Micah makes it if crowder is still out.
i don’t think W. Allen makes it back anytime soon.

yeah – something i hadn’t considered until i just watched sexy rexy tonight… they might cut allen (if he’s healthy …. cough cough… and then bring him back week 2) granted if he isn’t healthy then i think they have to settle and can’t resign him to week ?8?…

Please tell me you're kidding about Fergy...
Even if he wanted to come back, because he retired his suspension is on hold till he reinstates himself. So if he came back at week 8, he’d be suspended till the playoffs.
I used to think I had a drinking problem.
So I stopped thinking.
Just a couple changes I would make......
TE – I think either Nalbone will be promoted to the active roster, or we’ll pick up another to keep 3 for gameday.
WR – We only keep 5, and Turner gets that last spot.
OL – We’ll only keep 9. Gardner or Proctor gets the boot.
LB – I’m leaning towards us keeping 9 or 10 LBs. With Spitler a lock, and Folsom, Moses, and Walden fighting for the last spot.
DB – I say we go with 10, with Jones getting the last spot.
As for White being kept because he played the last preseason game. I’m inclined to think he’s getting limited playing time to showcase him for possible trading partners. I just don’t see them entrusting the back up QB spot to an injury prone CP10 and Pat White. Nor do I see any worthwhile offers being thrown Miami’s way for CP10.
I used to think I had a drinking problem.
So I stopped thinking.
i'm going to agree on the LB's
i’m pretty sure that they IR’d Garner because Crowder is going to be out for a couple weeks, Allen is going to be out for a couple weeks and they didn’t want to start the season with only 50…. so they ir’d garner and they will keep an extra LB….
they aren’t getting anything for white…. which is the big problem…. AZ might be willing to give something up for the Noodle Arm…
and the reality is … they aren’t making the playoffs in the AFC east with Penne or White QB’ing…

Well definitely not White....
But it could be possible with CP10.
I wouldn’t put it past some team to offer up a 5th or 6th rounder for White. You know there’s at least one coach out there who thinks he could turn White into a superstar.
I used to think I had a drinking problem.
So I stopped thinking.
LMAO @ Thomas getting cut.
IAF shouldn’t be starting and if he is that is an indecation that we will take two SOLBs next draft.
Hilliard makes the team, ST coverage, FB backup, 3rd and short HB, pass blocker (blocked A. Thomas one-on-one last year and won), and pass catcher. He can do it all.
We won’t go to a spread offense as long as this FO is here, but will have the capability to toss the ball 50+ times a game and win, if need be.
Wallace over turner? I think this will be interesting to look for.
WA is unlikely going to be ready to start, i think that is why Sapp was traded for. also, IDK if he will overtake SS will not start as WA is coming off a ACL tear.

Thomas is on the outs… i so have him making the team though (number 9). I just don’t see him on the team at the end of the year… just hasn’t shown enough.
I greatly disagree on Hilliard… but we’ll see saturday… but my points … he was terrible running the ball last year… if you take out the carolina 2 runs… he has a VERY POOR YPC number… he gets bounced by the ONES… he’s ok against the 3’s… yes he has blocked ok… but that isn’t enough to justify keeping an extra back …. most teams will keep 4 … with 1 or 2 on the PS to call up if someone goes down. So how does Hilliard grade out on ST… yes he plays … but does he play as well as Allen or Walden… nope.
he’s gone.
IAF is going to start because Misi is blowing more assignments then porter did last year… Misi will be the starter game 1 next year and very likely before the end of the year … but right now he is a liability.

2010 The Jim Mandich NewsFlash Award Winner.
""It only ends once. Everything that comes before is just progress"
