A Little Perspective...PLEASE???
You know I am REALLY getting tired of the the "chicken littles" on this site and all the "sky is falling" angst!
Let me say this one more time: it's PRE-SEASON!
Good gosh almighty! Don't you folks realize that it is better for Miami to lose to a so-called playoff team, the Falcons, NOW, and give Sparano a chance to literally whip these guys into shape, NOW, than have him have to do it LATER, when the games actually count?
Now, before I continue look at it from the Falcons' perspective. Last week against the Pats, they didn't lose by a measily 10 points...they lost by 18 points, letting the Pats (with Brady only playing about a half, mind you) get 4 TDs on them, to lose 28-10. How do you think Falcons fans felt? The same way most of us here are feeling: the sky is falling! and how do you think Falcons fans felt watching last night, with the next great elite QB Matt Ryan often overthrowing Roddy White and/or Tony Gonzales, who just happens to be the best TE in the NFL? Folks, Dolphins fans aren't the only ones complaining about last nights game, believe me!
Yeah, yeah, I know...Brandon Marshall is still dropping passes! Terrible, yes, but I would rather he drop passes NOW in the pre-season, than do it beginning week one. It is very important, if Marshall is still having issues with altitude changes (you know it is quite a bit above sea level in Denver, and the air is a bit thinner in Denver, all of which makes the ball do things it doesn't do at sea level), and QB throwing changes (Henne might make a great QB at mile high, because clearly he is STILL throwing too hard at times!), and both are still getting used to each other...and speaking of QBs in Denver, I bet most of you have forgotten that in one exhibition game last year, Kyle Orton threw 8 interceptions--in one game! I mention this because after four or so regular season games last year, Orton was the only QB who had NOT thrown an interception...
And yeah, the secondary still gives up TDs and big plays! Terrible, but wouldn't you rather a guy like Sean Smith give up big plays NOW than starting week one? Oh, I forgot, it was Jason Allen who gave up the TD to Roddy White! So blame Sean Smith for being late to the game, or blame Sparano for punishing him by putting Allen in his spot to open the game and thus "giving" the Falcons that TD!
And isn't it awful that R & R didn't run very well last night. Well, yes, but I'd rather see them not run well NOW than beginning in Buffalo in week one... In fact, how many teams HAVE run much during the preseason? Seems to me everyone is passing like the dickens, including the Fins, soooo...
Actually the only negative I could see was that the Fins SHOULD HAVE KEPT CAMARILLO if Hartline or anyone else really does have an injury...
Finally, and I thank God, Matty, you are one of the saner folks here--I know you aren't in the chicken little crowd--please use a little more perspective on the fact that this is only preseason, considering how terrible the Colts have looked--no one should give up 59 points to anyone!--consider that the horrible Rams beat the playoff team Pats, consider that the mighty Jets D let the McNabb-less Redskins beat them and might be without Calvin Pace when they play the Fins in week 3, consider that while Henne hasn't overall looked great, Mark Sanchez has been terrible and is worrying the crap out of Jets fans, consider that many times teams with good preseason records fall apart in the regular season (think 2008 Lions), and consider that while the Fins lost one game, they haven't lost anyone major to serious injury during the preseason like so many teams have..and if that's the case, then the Fins have lost nothing!
Oh, and, BTW...in the 1972 exhibition season, the Dolphins lost two games! Before they went 17-0...

Agree, but with one assholic point
I completely agree with your overall sentiments here: that it’s better that we have these mistakes in the pre-season – and thus have time to work on our issues – before the regular season where the mistakes would be much more costly.
However, I can’t think that anyone cares about who eventually wins any pre-season game. “A win is a win” is the most ridculous thing a person could say about the NFL preseason; however, “our first team offense looks like shit” and “our secondary is suspect” is a very apt thing to be concerned about. Anyway, my only point of contention is that you mention some teams’ preseason records as justification for the sky not falling, and the records are meaningless in the preseason, so they can’t serve as justification for anything at all.
Again, all that matters principally is how our first-team offense and defense looks when those units are playing (and that has been sort of lackluster, no?); second thing that matters is how some second-team dudes look as they get some reps; but otherwise, come 3rd and 4th quarter and there’s some seemingly haphazzard mix of 5th rounders, washed up veterans, and Pat-White-sorts on the field chucking the ball around like high-schoolers, it’s no wonder the wrong teams win preseason games, that’s all.
I completely disagree with your middle paragraph.
The guys in the NFL, the Union, specifically the veterans—they know what the season’s like. They know how long it is. They know how exhausting it is. They know how much beating they have ahead of them.
I’ll be damned if I’m going to let some pessimistic fan allow me to believe that these guys are putting their all into a game that doesn’t mean squat.

A lot of teams are freaking.
My Jet’s included, it’s totally unwarranted. Preseason= football that doesn’t matter and gives no insight on what will happen during the regular season.
Jets D looks on par, Run looks good, pass is sketchy....
Some might want to rethink crowning the Sanchize until he can show that he won’t sink the team with multiple INT’s etc. Nobody likes to watch their team lose, but sometimes they can’t remember that like you said, it’s a preseason game and there’s no sense in getting a Sanchez or LT or Dansby injured because you want to win a preseason game.

Lose what?? a Preseason game?
Nothing matters in the 2nd half and it’s important to realize that the game was only decided by less than a TD at the half…..That’s managing the game and keeping it close to pull out a victory in the 2nd half.
I think the team was experimenting with certain plays etc, because some of the playcalling was ridiculous.

I believe a lot will work itself out my only real concern is henne
Henne is very inconsistent even from his days at Michigan he would be great one game and then throw 3 picks the next. He showed that last year and so far this year Hes looked good one minute then bad the next…. will see I suppose in the regular season.
if sparano is worried, and i've got no idea if he is, then maybe there's justification for concern, but maybe not the severe forms of CLS
it is good if we know what we need to work on before the season!
yeah, i changed the photo
Henne, Marshall, etc.
Agree with sprout02 re: Henne’s inconsistency dating back to his Michigan days. I do like Henne and think he is a gutsy QB with an above-average arm but …… you sort of take the good with the bad.
As to Marshall, my only hope is that Dolphin fans don’t start turning on him in a disproportionate way like they did with Ginn. Personally I think Ginn is going to be an asset to SF in a way that he could have been an asset to Miami -—- not a superstar receiver but a threat to defenses and special teams. I hope Marshall is cut more slack than Ginn was -- the Dolphins need his talent to blossom -- not wither.
And -—- also agree that the sky is not falling -- it is, afterall, pre-season.
Snorky...
i’ve mentioned this in a few posts and in short, I’m confident that we’ll be in good form midway through the season. Henne will be solid, Marshall won’t be dropping passes, the run game will pick up, and Smith/Davis will play better.
WHat I do worry about is that our sketchy preseason form will carry over into the first part of the season. And that’s my concern, we can’t afford to start off 2-4, 3-5, and the like. We’ve got a tough schedule in the first half and must win the games we are supposed to (e.g., @ Buffalo) and hope to steal a game from some of the tougher opponents we have (e.g., @ Vikings)…
The good thing, I think so to speak, is that a lot of the mistakes are mental……penalties, dropped passes, etc. And these are things that you can coach and can resolve, as opposed to a flat out lack of talent or ability.
Marshall has always had his share of drops....
It is what it is….I’m not worried. His contributions far outweigh the drops, imo.
Henne will be fine. This is his first year as a starter, he’s still developing, and he’ll have his ups and his downs…. Fans have to realize he’s not a veteran in this league. That goes for Vontae and Sean Smith as well…. and the rest of the rookies we’ll have playing.
I mean, it appears we’re going to be loaded with 1st and 2nd year guy all over our starting roster…. We’re a young team, and we’l have growing pains…. Gotta accept it.
The penalties have to stop….way too many mental lapses, I agree with you 100%.

Correct me if I'm wrong
But wasn’t Marshall’s “drop” last night actually a strip by a DB? I don’t recall the ball hitting him in the hands.
If I were a Falcon fan I would be a lot more worried with Ryan’s game last night than I am with Henne’s.

You might be right, but...
last preseason, the Fins went 4-0, before going 3-5 at mid season. On the other hand, in game 3 of the preseason against the Bucs in Tampa, the Fins #1 offense, before and after the lightning delay, did not play well, and it took the second team (mainly Henne and Hartline)…(or is it that the Bucs always play Miami well?) to pull that one out, but anyway, I do see your point.
Still, I can’t see them losing to the Bills in Buffalo in September (in the winter is another story), and I don’t see them losing BOTH the Jets and Pats games in Miami. The Vikes? with them now having Camarillo, I can see that happening. I do see losses to Packers and Ravens—the only two teams having great pre-seasons—but beating the Steelers (with or without Big Ben) and the Titans. That would make the Fins either 5-3 or 4-4 or even 6-2 at mid season.
But you do have a good point (as usual, Natalya)
A fast start is at the top of everyone's wish list.
Two years in a row we’ve dug holes for ourselves, last year it was a little too deep to really climb out of.
Buffalo is a game we really need to win for a number of reasons but the main one is you don’t want to go to Minny 0-1. CJ Spiller is starting to scare me. The good news is they don’t have a good QB and their OLine is really suspect.

Its preseason....
They don’t play to win, and as evidenced by last weeks game against Jax, they don’t even play to tie. They play to evaluate, test packages, develop cohesion….
Vontae has been burned left and right all preseason, and last season. Same for Sean Smith…..
Preseason is more about evaluation then it is about winning.

Most number #1's are big and fast.
But it’s more likely around 4.4, not 4.3. Fitz is really more of the exception really. Moss, Owens, both Johnsons, Austin, and Wayne are perfect examples.

There are plenty of guys that run under 4.4
The NFL’s fastest official 40 yard dash time was 4.25 seconds by cornerback Fabian Washington. Previous to electronic timing, Deion Sanders held the official record at 4.29 seconds. Here are some unofficial claims to players who have broken the 4.2 second mark.
1. Ted Ginn Jr. (4.06)
2. Alexander Wright (4.09)
3. Michael Bennett (4.13)
4. Bo Jackson (4.14)
5. DeAngelo Hall (4.15)
6. Darrell Green (4.15)
7. Lavernaues Coles (4.16)
8. Deion Sanders (4.17)
9. Joey Galloway (4.18)
10. Ahman Green (4.19)
11. Laveranues Coles (4.2)
12. Don Beebe (4.21)
13. Donte Stallworth (4.22)
14. Ryan Dotson (4.24)
15. Michael Vick (4.25)
16. Randy Moss (4.25)
17. Willie Parker (4.23)
18. Chris Johnson (4.24)
19. Devin Hester (4.24)

22. Stanford Routt (4.29)
23. Fabian Washington(4.29)
24. Reggie Bush (4.33)
25. Darren McFadden (4.33)
“Once people saw his time [at the NFL combine], I started getting calls. I told them, ’He’s finally healthy. Mike played hurt all year.’ " — UCF coach George O’Leary, after Sims-Walker ran the 40-yard dash in 4.35 seconds at the 2007 NFL Scouting Combine

Okay...ummm....
Lets see. First off, this is a list of “unofficial claims/times”….. No to mention, out of this list only 2 are WR’s we’re likely to see… Moss is not definitely a lot slower than his rookie year. Coles was just cut, Stallworth hasn’t played in over a year, and is already out for half this season with an injury. …..
1. Ginn’s time was unofficial on OSU’s fast track, where scouts typically add time….AND our CBs practiced against him ALL of last year :)
2. Played football in the 90’s… not now
3. is a RB
4. is a RB
5. is a DB
6. is a DB
7. was just released by the Jets, and certainly was not running the 4.29 he ran his rookie year in the league
8. another DB
9. is he on a team currently?
10. is a RB
11. see #7 :)
12. Played in the 90’s, not in the NFL today
13. Out for half the season, didn’t play last year
14. I don’t even know who this guy is.
15. is a QB
16. HEY WE HAVE A WINNER, but doubtful he still runs that speed
17. a RB
18. a RB
19. Not exactly a sparkling example of a #1 WR in this league, since he struggles at the position
20. a DB
21. a RB
22. a DB
23. another DB
24. a RB
25. a RB

I'm inclined to believe he did it quite frequently last year.
I know they started out the season playing strictly one side. But after mid-season Davis was almost always going up against the #1.
I used to think I had a drinking problem.
So I stopped thinking.
Actually.....
It was Clemons who gave up the TD to Roddy White. Jason Allen was playing the outside position to take away the fade route. Clemons was supposed to pick the receiver up if he went inside. The announcers even pointed this out after the play.

Oh Tex, you make it so easy......
But let me explain it to you since I obviously went over your head. I made a funny because you set yourself up so easily. You took offense to a little rib of me implying you never say anything quote worthy. So I continued to press the issue by referencing the country singers you have quotes from in your sig. As to say, “Ask them if you need to know why you need to say something worthwhile to be quoted”.
Is that clear enough for ya’? At least Farorefox saw the comedy in it. You really need to lighten up.

I’ve seen you give your fair shots at people, not saying they didn’t deserve it, but you have a tendency to keep at people who have no business even being talked to. In the end all you’re doing is fueling the fire of someone who feeds off people like you.

Just a lurking Bronco's fan....
But I’m fairly certain Orton never threw 8 picks in one game.
Also, BM has always had a few dropsies, but as stated by a few here he does bring more than enough to the table to make up for it. He fell through a glass door on a piece of furniture and cut the crap out of his wrist and such. I believe there’s some nerve damage that might make it harder for him to ‘feel’ the ball correctly. He is a beast, though, and will make some great plays for you guys.
I’m glad he’s out of Denver, and hope he works out for you guys. He never seemed to recover from the Darrent Williams murder thing so hopefully a change of scenery will allow him to get some of his mental crap together.
