Miami Dolphins: Is the sky really falling? No, that's just a little rain.
Last week, before the Miami Dolphins first game of the preseason, optimism flourished.
But this week, many of the same people that were very optimistic about the 2010 squad have apparently come down with a bad case of "Chicken Little Syndrome" (CLS) since watching the game last Saturday.
CLS is characterized by some, or all, of the following symptoms:
- Mild to moderate crankiness when discussing the Miami Offense
- Severe feelings of anxiety that Brandon Marshall has lost his ability to catch a football
- Post traumatic flashback hallucinations of Cam Cameron, often accompanied by depression
- An overwhelming urge to cover your head and run in circles when outside
Well, for you folks suffering from this malady, there is hope for some relief this week in the form of the SECOND preseason game at Jacksonville! You see, the truth of the matter is that the Dolphins didn’t play great…. But they also didn’t play terribly.
While the Miami Offense looked flat and out of synch, the Miami Defense created four turnovers off a fairly vanilla defensive game plan. And that is pretty much what allowed the Dolphins to squeak out a 10-7 win. This offseason, the team overall has stressed the need for big plays, and the D has stressed the need specifically for takeaways. And based upon what I saw last year, more games were lost by a Defense that could not get a crucial stop - or come up with a needed takeaway - when the game was on the line, than were lost by an Offense that couldn’t move the ball. What I saw defensively from the Dolphins last Saturday was actually a pleasant surprise! I saw a young Defense play hard and fast, even though some of the guys making plays have only been on the team for a couple of weeks. I saw rookies who I expected to eventually start this year play like they already have a whole season of playing time under their belts. And I saw players, some rookies and some vets, who I did NOT expect to see making plays… well… making plays!
And all the while, I kept waiting to see new Defensive Coordinator, Mike Nolan, break out some things from his sneaky little bag of tricks. But there was very little trickery to be seen this night. Nolan is evidently playing it close to the vest, at least until we get a bit closer to the regular season. Which just makes the entire effort last Saturday even better! Because we ALL know what Nolan is going to do… it is not a secret… he is going to blitz early and often, and he is going to bring it from every direction. However, just knowing that these new Miami Dolphins defenders can play straight up this well, in their first real game together, inspires optimism that MAYBE this season - when the bullets are flying and the games count – MAYBE we will be able to get that crucial stop or takeaway when we really need it.
Now before anyone says that I am making too much out of the Defensive performance, let me stipulate that: "Yes, it was only against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers", and "Yes, much of it was played with second stringers." Still, it was good to see rookies like Jared Odrick, Koa Misi, and Nolan Carroll really step up, along with veterans like Paul Solia, Charles Grant, and Marques Douglas who are expected to be big contributors once the season starts.
I am not going to make excuses for the Miami first team Offensive effort in the same game… it was just ugly. And not just because it was wet and muddy. Wet and muddy changes up your play calls, however you still need to be able to execute, and the Offense definitely did NOT execute. Both Hartline and Marshall dropped passes; and the running game had no right to call itself that, because it wasn’t. But now is not the time to worry about the Offense.
When you look at the big picture, there is no tangible reason that the Offense shouldn’t be somewhat better than last year – the only key member missing from last year’s squad is Justin Smiley – everyone else remains (Ted Ginn doesn’t count as "key"). Also, last year there were several key members lost to injury, like Ronnie Brown, Patrick Cobbs, and Greg Camarillo, who are back this season. So even without Brandon Marshall, you would have to expect the Offense to have some margin of improvement over last season. But add in Marshall; Henne’s second year starting; Ronnie back as triggerman for the Wildcat; and a Defense that should help create more opportunities for the Offense, and how can you not expect overall improvement?
Still, there are some serious issues that still need to be resolved on the Offensive side of the ball, like:
- The O-line is in a state of flux and the starters need to be settled so that they can truly start to play as a "unit"
- I think we are going to miss Justin Smiley, because an athletic pulling Guard is required for a lot of things the Fins do, including the Wildcat
- The tight end play has to improve over last season, and we have yet to see who will step up make those plays; and will
- And *IS* Brian Hartline really going to earn the #2 WR spot?
Unfortunately for those of you suffering from CLS, these issues will probably not be resolved by this next game, but I would bet they will be resolved shortly thereafter – and most certainly by the 3rd preseason game.
But the Henne to Marshall connection? Not one of those issues.

Once again..........
Its preseason, dont read to much into it. No team is going to show its hand. Also, they played in a down pour.
Its preseason,enough said!!!!
Progress upward ^
Seems like the whole offensive game was played on the infield. To the life of me I can’t understand why we play on a baseball field. Even when its try it’s a terrible condition. Like you, I felt that the defense looked good considering this was the first pre-season game. That is what preseason is for – evaluate players and execution. That is why we have four. I sense that by game 1, the Phins will be ready.

Good point about the defense. That is probably one of the most overlooked aspect of last week’s game. The defensive gameplan was very basic but they performed well (for the most part).
i wouldnt even expect Nolan to pull out all the tricks out of the bag
till maybe the Vikings game or maybe even wait till the NE game. It’s good to see the young defense play well under straight up conditions. Good Expectations from them this year. Hopefully we can keep Nolan around for a couple of years.

I am not really worried about the offense for the most part...
I would like to see us get settled on our starting offensive line, but that should happen soon.
I am a little worried about how we weren’t getting any push out of our D-line. I want to see them do better this week. I know it was in the mud, but the other team was playing in the mud too…. Everything else will be fine on offense and defense as long as the offensive and defensive lines do well it should be a fun season.
when does the season start.....
I've been avoiding comment on the 1st game
because well, it was the first game. And is it really wise to draw much from that? Not imo anyway…
Ask any football coach or go to any training camp at any level, and you’ll see that the defense is almost always ahead of the offense in the early going….even on teams with good offenses. There’s a lot more timing, subtleties, and coherence that an offensive unit requires, especially with some new players being integrated such as BM.
Anyhow, if the offense still looks dodgy come game 3 or 4 of the preseason, then I think it might be reason for concern. For now though, especially out of game 1, I’m looking more at how backups, young players, and the bubble players are doing….these earliest games are paramount for them
yup
well said. i watch other PS games until the starters are pulled, but I always watch the Fins to the end because I am looking for something out of the new guys/backups/long shots.

Ever the pragmatic Talya...
There’s gotta be something to draw from the 1st game or why play or do the coaching staff even care? I think there’s something, mostly what needs to be corrected or getting into the groove kind of thing.
These games remind me of the first Rocky movie… he (Rocky) starts out his training, looks like shit and can’t run worth a damn. But towards the end, he got a rythm and his feet under him. And what was the ending out come? Oh yeah, feeling optimism here!

I realize that it was only the 1st preseason game but the #1 offense, IMO, wasn't ready to play.
They lacked concentration. Illegal procedure penalities and dropped passes point to this. The Buc’s #1 offense played pretty well. The Buc’s looked ready. Freeman was 4-4 with a TD against the Phins #1 Defense. I don’t remember offside penalities. It didn’t seem that the rain and field conditions affected them.
I want to see more crispness in JAX from the offense. Know the snap count. Catch the ball. Concentrate. When players step on the field they should be expected to be on top of their game. I am not sure if the #1 offense had that sense of urgency last weekend. That’s what I want to see in JAX.
And no the sky isn’t falling, but that doesn’t mean I can’t be disappointed in the effort.

Agreed, CT
I can see where Marshall might drop a couple of passes due to wet muddy ball considering he was injured most of the offseason and it takes time to gel with a new QB (plus, he came from Denver, a completely different climate). But my chief complaint is with the OL getting all those penalties…if you remember, Henne had the offesne going until Carey got that penalty…Henne never was able to get it going again in that game (again, penalties…nice thig though was the Incognito wasn’t one of them…was he even playing then?). so yes the biggest thing is the OL gelling, not Marshall’s number change.
i was also disappointed
but IMO, a lot of it was due to the Oline shuffle taking place. i expect things to improve rapidly between game 2 and game 3.
Also, I believe it is going to be harder for Marshall to catch the balls thrown by Henne than by Orton. But that will just be getting used to the velocity. If Cammy, Bess, and Hartline could do it last year, i know Marshall can do it this year.

So many people look at the Bucs game and compare Miami with other teams in the league and playing the “coulda, woulda, shoulda” crap.
I enjoy watching Miami in the preseason but I take very little out of it. Ricky Williams averaged less that three yards per carry in the 2002 season and I thought we were screwed in the running game like every other year before that. Then he only went to lead the league in rushing that year.

You know
it’s coming to the point where I am getting slightly concerned about the offense. I can understand the offensive line shuffling early in training camp, but we are quickly approaching week one. It’s time for our staff to figure out whom is going to start and stick with it(I’d say Incongito-Grove-Jerry left-right).
i honestly think they have it pretty much figured out already
i think they know who is gonna man the guard spots (Richie, Jerry), and Center is a toss up, which is a good thing… sort of.
Grove is good. Maybe he isn’t being dominant, but he’s good. So if they keep putting Berger in there, that must mean that he is also good. So the way I see it, we can’t lose with either one… and we have good depth. If the performance is actually that similar, then the coaches will likely just pick one after the Jax game and go from there.
no major cause for concern…. yet.

According to this report, some starting jobs have already been won.
Center: Berger (interesting)

Looks like the two guard spots are still up for grabs. I expect Jerry to get the RG job, assuming he’s healthy.

Nice post Lefty
I really liked how well the D looked overall when you consider it was about as base as it could.
Crowder said he loved Misi because he could tell him to hit a brick wall and he would and he wasn’t lying because he took out two blockers and allowed CC a clean shot,he may not get the sacks but he will certainly enable others to make plays if he keeps that up.
Ya reckon Soliai now understands why coach has been on his butt to trim down?
There’s a ton of players vying for 3 starter spots and depth and all those players have to be thoroughly evaluated so I’m happy that coach hasn’t settled on that unit yet….it means he’s waiting until he’s seen what he needs to see and that means he’s doing his job.

QB Tyler Thigpen threw a 50-yard touchdown pass to Roberto Wallace. Great throw and Wallace muscled Kevin Hobbs to get it.

yea I hope we keep Moore or Turner
it would be great if we keep 6 WR but I highly doubt that.

Increased blitzing does not necessarily mean good things. Most quality QB’s in the NFL prefer a defense to blitz, knowing their WR’s will be single covered somewhere on the field.
It’s knowing when to blitz, who to blitz and how to blitz.
Yes, it might mean a couple more takeaways in the course of a season, but it also can mean your chances of getting burned increase.
The best defense is more of a positionally correct defense with occasional blitzes from the proper personnel.
I’m sure Mike Nolan knows what he’s doing though. :/
MATTEAU!!!!! MATTEAU!!!!!!! MATTEAU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
yup. well stated
that is why i was happy to see the base D do so well without gimmicks.
for me personally, i felt that the blitz schemes were something that were underused and left out of the play calling at the wrong times last season. At the end of the colts and the saints games, I felt like we went into too much of a prevent and allowed two deadly QBs to sit back comfortably in the pocket and pick us apart.
but QB pressure without blitzing is even better!

It’s the only reason the Giants won the Super Bowl a couple years ago. They didn’t need to blitz because their D line was ridiculous that year. They could leave everyone in coverage while destroying Brady. That was the difference against the Patriot’s spread offense.

Speaking of offensive line in flux
Newly signed OG Randy Thomas worked with the starting offensive line at left guard during the second team period.
Does anyone else find it disconcerting that a FA just of the street is already working with the first team?

they do that to establish a baseline
they already know the other 4 guys he is working with, and so it’s easier for them to see how he performs when they review the film. He won’t be there long.

street to starter
dont read too much into it…. typical sparano
sparano just wants to get him work and see how he does vs starters.
he knows what he got with the other players…so he is basically checking him out
Well said WestCoastFinFan
I agree wholeheartedly. The offense will sort their problems out soon enough. Like you said, the starters without Brandon should improve with Brown being ready to start a full season. The line is basically the same. The rookies from last year should step up somewhat. Henne has almost a year under his belt now and was making good improvement at the end of last year. That game against the Steelers he had 16 of 20 completions, a TD and no INTS for 140 yards. And he did this in a little more than a quarter and a half before he got hurt. He was well on his way to a 300 yard game.
The defense was a pleasant surprise, getting good pressure, a couple of sacks, hurries and stops for losses. All using a base defensive package. And the 4 turnovers are what we were lacking last year!
I wouldn’t say the sky was falling. It’s more like the sky is the limit!
my guess is that the team has taken on and learned from the mistakes and factored in the
ungodly mud and are looking forward to the next game. lets move on from this butt ugly first game business. i hope they don’t take it too seriously and we shouldnt either. its wednesday evening.
yeah, i changed the photo

what everyone seems to be overlooking
(and the fish wraps are the biggest offenders) is it looked like they would have run the ball 45 times and they would have done it with great success had it been a real game. Ronnie looked STRONG in the game, and there seemed to be a good push off the line… yes coach said d-line has issues in those conditions, but that just further reinforces my first point… that had it been a real game – the passing issues would have never happened.
Now the real concern – is the secondary looked like they picked up right were they left off. Smith had a couple shakey tackles (yes he made the plays but it didn’t look like solid square hits) Davis gets burned deep, and the FS wiffs on a 3rd and long play allowing a first down. I know it’s the first game but i’d like to see a little more improvement.
The Future is now, stop the bandwagon and lets get the Henne train rollin, as we all hope that the 14th dwarf is the real prince charming.
area of biggest concern
FS – no
RB health – no
OL- no
NT- no
OLB- no
OC Dan Henning….
