There are a number of people, both in the media and out, who are predicting that the Dolphins will release or attempt to trade Pat White. These are ridiculous notions, based on nothing but their own fantasies. Let's take an honest look at the Pat White situation.
There are those who say that Pat White cannot be a NFL QB because he did not complete a pass last year. This is based on 5 passes. Let me say this again. Pat White had a total of FIVE pass attempts last year. Can someone tell me another QB who has been judged unworthy based on his first five NFL passes? White came in under specific circumstances and the defense never really paid attention to the pass because the Dolphins did not show any propensity for throwing out of the Widcat offense. White also rushed for 81 yards, averaging just under 4 yards a carry.
Some will say that the Dolphins will get rid of White because he is too small and got hurt last year. There have been a number of small QBs in the league over the last 25 years. Brees, Garcia, Flutie, Theisman and Blake come to mind, as for the concussion, we all know that there has been a a lot of players in the NFL who have had head injuries including Steve Young, Troy Aikman, Ben Roethlisberger, Trent Green and our very own Zach Thomas and Chris Chambers. Neither if these are a reason to release a player. According to the team, White has added nearly 20 pounds since being drafted and does not shy away from contact.
Keeping White vs keeping Thigpen is a no brainer. Neither of these players are fighting for a starting job, in fact if Henne goes down in will be Pennington that goes in, so neither of these guys are fighting for a second string job either, atleast not this year. So why keep White over Thigpen? White is younger and more athletic and he has more upside. Thigpen is entering his 5th NFL season and what you see is what you are going to get. He is massively inconsistent and completes about 50% of his passes. White is entering his 2nd year and after having his throwing motion tweaked and removing his gloves, the coach has said that White is progressing and working hard at getting better. The Dolphins are not in a position where they need a new QB right now, they are in a position to allow White to mature and get his NFL legs while throwing in a few Wildcat plays along the way.
Lastly,
The current Dolphin regime has been here for 3 years, this being the third. I have heard people say that this is regime knows when to cut its losses with players that they pick up and it is true when it comes to free agents, but how many high draft picks have they released? The answer is one. A fourth round pick from 2008 named Shawn Murphy. This regime has held onto its drafted players with regularity. It makes no sense to get rid of a second round pick when he is making progress.
The fact that Thigpen played so much in the first preseason game could mean a few of things. 1st: someone has shown an interest in Thigpen and they wanted to showcase him. 2nd: Thigpen really needed the work. 3rd: I am off base. All of my conjecture is based of rational thought, if you disagree, I would ask you to do the same. Don't just say that White sucks, refute my ideas and offer those of your own.
