A Bit of Media Savvy, Please!

Since the early 1990s, there has been a concerted effort to teach children and adolescents how to be "media smart": namely, to think critically about the things you see in the media so as to avoid manipulation or terrible consumer decisions.

This critical thinking regarding the media is often (or hopefully) applied to commercials and infomercials, national and local newscasts, newspapers, sitcoms and cartoons.  However, a major problem I am noticing recently is that  there seems to be a serious lack of media savvy used by many fans with regards to sports television and journalism.  This lack of critical thinking is leading to the creation of problems that do not actually exist, and in some cases serious damages to player careers and even full NFL teams.

Star-divide

I decided to write this post after examining some of the media surrounding the recent Dez Bryant issue.  I am a bit of a media fiend, scouring all over the various net outlets I have available for everything NFL (on that note, if you guys/gals have any good sites I may be missing post them in the comments below).  Because of this I tend to read numerous articles on the same issues, as well as tons of follow up articles, and so on.  I also tend to read a couple of pages worth of comments where they exist, as I am a big fan of blog style discourse (which explains my love for the Phinsider).  I find this gives me a feel for the pulse of the public surrounding various issues.

Dez has been of particular interest to the media ever since media douche Mike Silver "broke" a story regarding Bryant’s run in with the Dolphin’s Jeff Ireland. I won’t rehash this, as you all clearly heard way too much about this the first go round (as Silver rode this one to milk his newfound fame for about a month). The article was written for Yahoo Sports (!), a website publication that is often linked to the bottom right of the Phinsider, as well as other SB Nation blogs.

While this article was met with indifference by some, it incited reaction in many others.  Some condemned Ireland, others defended him.  Some painted Dez as a martyr in all this, others felt this was Bryant being a whiny trouble maker, a widely held belief about him since his recent collegiate days.  However, too few people ever considered why Silver would have written an article like this, and why he would have then hit a media circuit to continuously talk about it.

In considering a piece of media, it is good practice to ask the question "who benefits?"  A Marxist will tell you that in any public interaction, someone benefits in some way.  So the question to ask in this situation is "who benefits from bashing Jeff Ireland and releasing this story?"  Dez Bryant? Not really, as the last thing he needed was more media scrutiny after how much attention was paid to him missing his final year of college.  Jeff Ireland? Definitely not.  The beneficiaries here were Mike Silver, who became a very sought after opinion on the matter, Yahoo Sports, who employ him and where the story was posted, and the other media outlets that piggy backed onto the story, eventually stealing some of Yahoo’s traffic on the issue.

Like all stories, as time passed the story was forgotten.  News of Lawrence Taylor soliciting prostitutes and updates on every Brett Favre bowel movement hit the airwaves, burying this story from the public consciousness.  Then, a couple of days ago, all hell broke loose when Bryant refused to carry Roy Williams’ pads, a rookie ritual in the NFL.  Media outlets jumped all over this, but perhaps most interesting was Yahoo.

Three days after the story broke, another Yahoo author Chris Chase wrote an article about Dez possibly hurting his ability to gain sponsorship deals because of how he will be perceived now.   Chase started the article by saying

You can say this about Dez Bryant, at least: He is who we thought he was.

Here, the same news outlet – albeit with a different author – who had defended Bryant a few weeks earlier joins in the bash fest against Dez, claiming that they knew who he was all along.

The point I want to make about this is simple:  media outlets latch on to trivial events and try to blow them up, making them far more important then they ever would have been.  The reason they do this is for personal gain: more site traffic, newspaper purchases or viewership means more money and more publicity.  Furthermore, any position held by one of these outlets or their writers will fluctuate depending solely on what will help them accomplish this traffic.  What is lost in all this, though, is the detrimental effect media attention can have on players and organizations.

Media is powerful.  Anyone who doesn’t believe that is delusional, or isn’t paying attention.  The power of the pads story prompted reaction from Wade Phillips:

Though he called the shoulder pads situation "a non-issue," Cowboys coach Wade Phillips said he addressed the team about it because of how quickly the story spread. Phillips said he talked to someone who said it was a top story in Toronto.

The Cowboys coach felt the need to address his team because it legitimately worried him that this story would hurt team chemistry.  Currently, the story is still going, partially because Bryant hasn’t handled it with the most tact.  Video of him berating reporters is now being shown on various outlets.  The reason for showing this?  Because Bryant comes off looking childish, and to some this will justify the view of him as a troublemaker.  If the media outlets thought for a minute that his outburst would hurt their interests in the eyes of the majority, it absolutely would not have been shown.

I hope that those who don’t already think critically about sports media will begin to do so.  The media shared part of the blame for Jimmy Clausen’s slip down draft boards this year, and although Terrell Owens is undoubtedly a loud-mouth, it makes you wonder how loud he really is, and how much of his loudness is media created.

So, don’t just sit back and watch NFL Total Access mindlessly, thinking that everything they say is gospel.  Any time a big story gains wings and dominates the airwaves, sit back and try to figure out:

  • Where did the story originate?

  • Who benefits from the story not going away?

  • Is the originator(s) of the story getting interviewed all over the place for weeks on end?

  • Does the story come from a clearly unbiased source?

  • Finally, if you really think about the story, do you immediately disagree with what is being said?  Don’t become a media zombie!

In the end, you will be better able to weed out the junk, and to form your own opinion about sports news.  If you fall into the trap of believing everything the sports media tells you, side effects may include homerism, close-mindedness, believing Jets hype, and sports enjoyment disfunction.  However, if you critically judge what sports analysts and reporters tell you, it allows for the creation of dialogue, debate, and a greater understanding of the issues (and subsequently, the non issues).

The media aren’t necessarily who we thought they were.

so true

Suggesting the alternative to what the media is pushing is usually looked at as conspiracy theory most a lot of the time it’s actually the truth. Media has too much financial benefit to just take them at their word and unfortunately when you realize they’re FOS you really can’t prove it because the manufactured truth has morphed into the assumed truth.

That is why I see value

In not just the Phinsider, but all SB Nation blogs. For the people, by the people. Sure, you will get a lot of homerism on individual team blogs, but that is kind of to be expected, and at least it becomes open for debate.

Thanks for the rec!

Another great example of the media making someone out as bad as possible was Barry Bonds

If that guy sneezed they made it seem like he was purposely flinging buggers on infants. Not to say Bonds was a good guy or class act, we all know he wasn’t, I have a hard time believing all the stuff the media was feeding us about him.

This is one of the more intriguing posts I've seen here in a while...

doubly so in light of the ubiquitous “jets hype” meets “miami dissed” plus “nonsensical babbling” fanposts that so often dominate these pages.

Anyway, it is a fascinating subject and one I’d love to discuss at length. However, my experience being on this blog for several years is that any such discussion would likely degenerate into political wranglings, accusations of all sorts – typically with the suffix “ism” or “ist”, and the levying of conspiracy theories in the face of overwhelming evidence to the contrary.

Excellent Post - and pretty dead on.

As a former member of the Radio Media, I agree 100%. There is a large misconception (cue post by DB) about the media currently. Many people the Media are around to keep us updated on the news, and happenings globally, or by sport, entertainment etc…. This is actually false.

For many years now the media is simply another form of Entertainment. While currently events are reported through media sources, the fact is, prior to reporting, they pick and choose which stories are more likely to elicit an emotional response from viewers and readers alike. Those stories are headlined, while other stories are pushed back.

Watch your local TV News. The first 26-30 minutes of every single nightly broadcast is negative news. The bad stuff, crimes, disasters, etc. Then they start to mix in the occasional feel good story, and close out the the newscast usually with something silly. Why? Because we as people feed off the negative news, and if we ran the good news stories first, most people would change the channel.

Eliciting an emotional response draws viewers and readers alike. Those numbers are then translated to marketability, and advertising revenue. Which is the bottom line.

So there I was.....asleep when it happened.....the buzzing of the blackberry woke me up....still groggy, I rubbed my eyes, and read the incoming email.

It's all about ad revenue and entertainment sells more than truth.

Entertainment is mainly what we want to believe is true because edifies our hard wired beliefs. That’s how Disney became Disney. Most of us were raised hearing stories with happy endings. So when we hear a story that doesn’t have a happy ending we don’t want to believe it’s true.

Rupert Murdock figured that out quickly and look at his empire!

Outstanding!

You deserve a “Matty” on this one!

What you say is do dead on that these and other reasons are why I usually don’t give the MSM much credibility (even NFLTA…remember all the hype about Jay Cutler last year? Favre Watch?)…yet it used to be sports media was at least a bit more credible. Likely still is, but keeping these issues constantly in focus (I mean, three days of TO joins the Bengals???) gives the sports media the same black eye the rest of the Mainstream media has…or is it just there is nothing else to report on?

I doubt it. But TO to the Bengals, Jets “Super Bowl” nonsense and Rex Ryan, and Favre Watch “make better stories” than, say, why won’t Hartline get with the cops about his truck (now that’s story I would like to see resolved, for Hartline’s sake).

And the wisdom of “who benefits” with media stories, believe me, isn’t just for Marxists! As I am NOT a Marxist (!), that way of looking at the media ought to be how folks look at all media stories (except maybe the weather)

Media Reporters

Well, I think we all need to stay open minded on these guys. Like us, these guys are just doing their jobs. Even during the dead of the football offseason, they still need articles to report about because it is their job. For all we know, they may go to their bosses and voice their opinions they don’t think an article should be written only to be told by the boss to publish it. While I think a lot of the things they write are premature judgements, I do understand they have a job. It also stinks, but bad news does sell better than good news.

by Finhead83 on Jul 30, 2010 1:44 PM EDT reply actions

maybe there's not a "the media" -- but many different branches (print, tv, radio, inet) and very different

levels of responsibility and quality. news editors think differently than sports editors who think differently than business editors. we might keep in mind how much has changed and is changing that we now take for granted. 24 hour multiple sports channels with each day demanding competition with every other channel? it used to be a couple metro papers, a wire reporter, and some radio. very little internal ‘drama’ made the air. now there’s time and space to get into every possible conflict.
isn’t it sports that’s the entertainment, and sports media mainly part of that industry?
it doesn’t seem at all surprising that one media would run different stories on the same guy, dez bryant. the media doesn’t claim to have everything figured out. its reporting is ongoing. conspiracy? not sure “the media” has its act together or cares enough to go into much deep conspiracy on sports teams, except it they are defending their hind quarters on a story.

yeah, i changed the photo

by a1a on Jul 30, 2010 4:10 PM EDT reply actions

I wouldn't say it is any conspiracy

I hope that isn’t how this came across. The motivation of the media (as in all sports media outlets) is always clear to those who consider it. What I meant to point out is that when people don’t think about this consideration, it can lead to problems in perception. Further problems arise from writers who do smear campaigns like Silver. I am absolutely not saying that all members of the media are slime like Silver, but the nature of their job (as was said by others above) leads them to do this carpet bombing type reporting. When you don’t realize why they do this, it can seem like a trivial situation is far bigger, and can cause actual problems in the sporting world.

The media is all about negative but that doesn't mean that a story shouldn't be told.

Like it or not, the Ireland / Bryant story was relevant and important. It wasn’t made up. Nobody denied it. That story needed to be told. And the writer of that story, Mike Silver, should benefit from it. He is the one that did the work and broke a story that actually happened.

agree w/ you ct w/ one exception. "media" do love it when there's a 'good' story that will play. the hero is a good story. but part of the original

idea of a free press is to tell things that other vested interests have in not being told. that’s another part of the reality. to say it is all about $$$ is something of a distorting simplification. you can in one sense say that about anything. selling refrigerators or govt. bonds.
what media care about is a good story, because that’s what it is in business to find. yes, good stories tend to sell. but to suggest a tabloid operates with the same ethics that an old grey reputable paper does, is incorrect. the new wild card is the web — it is changing the dynamics. to wit: beat reporter’s twittering and putting everything out there
anyway, sports media is very very different than other sectors of “the media.” sorry to pontificate but media isn’t always to blame for everthing, which i know df717 isn’t trying to say. its a good subject.

I disagree

with your assertion that Silver should benefit from it. Actually, no, I agree that he should benefit by getting a paycheck, but not by continuously harping on a story under the guise of being a Mother Theresa and defending Bryant’s interest when really all he was doing was pumping his own notoriety.

I agree that the story had to be told, but the amount that Silver milked it was ridiculous. I am absolutely not saying “down with the media”, because that would be ridiculous. The media exists, and always will in some form. What I was saying is to be aware of a few things, and not to mindlessly believe everything that is written and said.

I think as a reporter you should do everything that you can to further your story and those reading it. I will ask you a question: Who Benefits? I bet Yahoo encouraged Silver to gone on all those shows as much as Silver wanted to go on all those shows. They both benefited.

Look at Woodward and Bernstein. They still benefit from Watergate and use it to their advantage. In my eyes there is nothing wrong with that. (I know Watergate was a little bigger deal it was just a comparison).

But if you are going to attempt to further the story

Shouldn’t the story be told in full….not just the ending you want to have come out? Because there was a huge difference in the initial stories I read regarding Bryant and Ireland, and the story I ended up finding out after thorough research.

I mean sure the highlight “Ireland asks Bryant if his mom was a prostitute” catches your eye. But the full details were contained in the first 4 or 5 sources that I read the story from. Low and behold when I found the full story, it definitely made is essentially a non story to me. In the content of the interview, I didn’t see a damn thing with Ireland asking him that question. But I did have issues with him asking the question the way it was originally reported.

Nice post, rec'd.

Media has always been about the sensationalism factor. It’s not the actual story that matters, but how you spin it to your targeted audience.

In the Bryant case Silver used the premise that he was doing this in the interest of future potential draft picks. Safeguarding them from the inappropriate questions asked during pre-draft interviews. When in reality it was to boost numbers for Yahoo and to get himself face time on multiple media outlets.

I used to think I had a drinking problem.

The recent Favre incident

Is an example of media manipulation as well. Reports surfaced that he was retiring, and they may not be valid, as everyone around him and around the team have refuted them. With all this, it isn’t the news report that is getting the blame (so far), it is Brett.

People paint Favre as an attention seeker. In fact, someone over on Daily Norseman said his most unbreakable record was “Biggest Media Whore”. But from my perspective, it is the news outlets that create this, constantly badgering him for comments (where he gives no conclusive answers, and is portrayed as a waffler) and follow him around when he practices with high school kids.

Again, I could be wrong, but when you really pay attention “Favre Watch” seems to have hurt Brett’s legacy as much as anything he has done.

Stephen Ross is to be seen, not heard.

I'm not buying the Favre is a victim or just another guy line of thinking..

As a professional athlete, playing the most important position in the most popular league in the country….it is obvious that what you do, say, and how you behave is not going to go unscrutinized. Favre knows this as much as any other athlete does. That they choose to engage in assorted attention getting behavior regardless, tells me that they know what their actions will warrant, and they do it anyway.

What other player, especially a big, big name player in american professional sports has done what Favre has done which is to retire/unretire/threaten to retire/change his mind and repeat the routine for at least 4 years straight? Not even Roger Clemens was that bad…

If Favre didn’t waffle every year, there wouldn’t be much the media could report on him during the offseason.

Some Good Points

While I agree with you on many points, have you noticed that this year is a little different? That report came out a couple of days ago, and within hours it became clear that it was completely unsubstantiated. It wasn’t like Favre called another press conference this time, a news paper reported it, and every other outlet jumped. Then, when everyone refuted it, people started calling for Favre’s head as if he was doing anything but his normal (practicing with high school kids, riding his tractor, wearing jeans), and as if he had said it.

Yes, everyone is sick of Favre (myself included, I used to be a big fan), but this time around, from what I can tell, he didn’t cause the uproar.

Stephen Ross is to be seen, not heard.

Great post. I finally got around to reading it.

PFT came to mind to me with Forio constantly putting out garbage that the mindless posters eat up.
