Have at it: ESPN Power Rankings
First off, seminolephinphanatic posted the rankings as a fanshot but they haven't gotten much love let's say, so I'm (re)posting them here. Granted, now that I've reposted them people might be less, not more, inclined to talk about them, ha ha! Anyway, hopefully we get some discussion.
Yeah it is just July and these are of course, subjective rankings without anyone having so much as played a game, but this should provide some fodder for discussion if nothing else...
I know, I know, the whining will be loud and voiceferous given where Miami is ranked compared to the Jets. That said, can we just broaden the discussion...where should Miami be ranked (regardless of NY's place) ? Who should be ahead of us? Behind us?
And also, who do you think the, let's say, top 5 teams are?
| 2010 Power Rankings: Offseason | ||||

![]() |
1 (1) | Colts | 14-2-0 | Their fate might depend on what others have done to narrow the gap. (Kuharsky) |
![]() |
2 (5) | Saints | 13-3-0 | The Saints should not expect another magical season because every team is different, but they can still contend for the Super Bowl. (Sando) |
![]() |
3 (3) | Vikings | 12-4-0 | Brett Favre is waiting for a two-hour TV special to announce his return. (Walker) |

6 (6) | Packers | 11-5-0 | Improved pass protection for QB Aaron Rodgers could go a long way. (Walker) |

7 (12) | Jets | 9-7-0 | With 12 Pro Bowl position players, the Jets are loaded to challenge the Pats. (Clayton) |

9 (10) | Patriots | 10-6-0 | Who keeps the Patriots ahead of every other AFC East team? Tom Brady. (Clayton) |

![]() |
25 (27) | Seahawks | 5-11-0 | Immediate expectations for QB Charlie Whitehurst subsided pretty quickly once Seattle hit the practice field. (Sando) |

![]() |
27 (28) | Chiefs | 4-12-0 | The Chiefs are hoping safety Eric Berry will provide immediate help. KC's defense ranked 30th in 2009. (Kuharsky) |
![]() |
28 (25) | Browns | 5-11-0 | The first year of the Mike Holmgren era could be rough. This team lacks talent across the board. (Walker) |
![]() |
29 (31) | Lions | 2-14-0 | After the 2009 season, the Lions have nowhere to go but up. So does the pass defense, which ranked 32nd last season and allowed 266 yards per game.(Walker) |
![]() |
30 (30) | Buccaneers | 3-13-0 | How well can a young head coach with a defensive background manage Josh Freeman, a franchise QB entering his first full season as an NFL starter? (Sando) |
![]() |
31 (24) | Bills | 6-10-0 | The only thing the Bills can look forward to is the 2011 draft and a new quarterback. (Clayton) |
![]() |
32 (32) | Rams | 1-15-0 | The big question heading into camp is whether rookie QB Sam Bradford can earn the starting job by Week 1. (Sando) |

I think we should be ahead of the Bengals and 9ers
but I’m proud we’re already pretty close to the top it seems like by default because a lot of teams look pretty terrible right now. Surely there will be a few sleepers that will move up.
These pre-season rankings mean squat to me. No one can ever come close.

Yes TCP, we know it is fodder but do play along :-)
I mean everything at this point is speculation and if nothing else, it can make for lively conversation.
LOL I swear thats all I can muster in this debate. I know this post will set off a bunch of people
that claim we should be ranked higher and whine about being disrespected. Blah, blah, blah. I for one do not care who respects us or not. Hell I would be fine with being ranked last. I prefer being the underdog. The overlooked team if you will.

There's two ways to look at this.
The Homer Perspective: This is absolute BS. We have had the best offseason in football and our team is poised to make a championship run. We have the best O-Line in the game, and our franchise QB finally has a top 3 receiver to throw to. Last time we checked our running game was one of the elite groups in the game and our newly revamped defense features an overall stud at MLB and genius Mike Nolan will make all the pieces work together. The AFC East is ours. Dolphins = TOP 5.
The realistic perspective: these rankings are quite fair. OK, we could have been ranked a bit higher (Bengals and Niners I’m looking to take your spot) but we are coming off a 7-9 season where we finished 3rd in our division. Our offseason boosted us up a bit but last time I checked we still play in the AFC East and we have a few holes on the defensive/ST part of the ball. Plus, the fans voted the Dolphins 16th in voting, so one might say the experts are being generous here! Ultimately, It will be up to Henne’s Offense and Nolan’s defense to GAIN some respect, otherwise…. Dolphins= Ranked 10-15
I’d put us right in the middle… about the 7-9th best team in football, but like most any most teams in the league their goal should be nothing short of a Lombardi Trophy.

good comments :-)
And I appreciate you admitting/acknowledging the existence of a “homers perspective”. Big difference between that and the “realistic” perspective. Anyhoo, not common ’round these parts!
Right, then, I agree about the 49’ers being a dubious choice ahead of us. I mean let’s get this right…their big offseason acquisition was, cough cough, Ted Ginn, while we got Brandon Marshall. And that makes them better…….how exactly? I realize they are in a weaker division but head to head as of today, I say Miami is a 3 point favorite on a neutral field against them…
I think we are a borderline top 10 team, you could argue anywhere from maybe 9th to 12th. Meanwhile, I see Atlanta and the Bengals as being the two teams that are about equal with us right now, though I have my doubts about Cincinnati putting together 2 decent years.
i agree about Cincinatti.

I think the Packer should be higher!
Falcons lower with the propellers ; )
I will see the Dolphins win a SUPER BOWL before i die(23 years and counting)
both teams are good
the falcons are very good. They remind me of Miami. Good offense built among a solid young qb, good receivers and a great running game. If their D stays solid for the entire season it wouldnt surprise me if they made the NFC Championship game.

Here's my try
TOP 10:
1 Colts (IF Freeney had been healthy…)
2 Saints
3 Cowboys (IF Flozell Adams hadn’t been injured…)
4 Ravens (If Ed Reed is healthy, Ravens > Vikes, otherwise, they slide quite a bit)
5 Vikings (Brad Childress has got to be the luckiest man on the face of the earth…)
6 Patriots (Tom Brady, dang it)
7 Packers (Aaron Rodgers, dang it)
8 Dolphins (Chad Henne > Mark Sanchez)
9 Chargers (If Nate Kaeding would’ve kicked straight…)
10 Jets (How would the conversation change if the Colts and Bengals hadn’t laid down at the end…)
11 Bengals (Carson Palmer, dang it and good CBs)
12 Falcons (CP10 could have won the game head-to-head, except Fasano gave the game away, we’re better with Marshall)
Jared Odrick 6-5 304 DL & Tim Dobbins 6-1 246 ILB & Koa Misi 6-3 251 LOLB
Brandon Marshall 6-4 230 WR; John Jerry 6-5 328 LG; AJ Edds 6-3 247 LILB
Nolan Carroll 5-11 204 CB & Rashad Jones 6-1 214 S; Chris McCoy 6-3 244 ROLB; Austin Spitler RILB 6-2 243; Pet Cat:Chris "He's the REAL" McCoy 6-3 244

those fans rankings on nfl network were garbage
almost every team was exactly how they placed at the end of last year. it was like the draft order backwards. The fact that most expert rankings on various sites and mediums list us higher than 16 , which we probably are, we still need to prove ourselves especially in the beginning games. I want to go into that bye week wishing I could buy plane tickets and tix to see us play at NE in January to lock up a good seed or the division.
I would like to compare these with the end of the season rankings.
Just to see how on or off they are…..

FINS GETTING SOME RESPECT
I can’t agree nor disagree with the rankings, but I will say Greenbay and Miami has alot to prove that they deserve higher marks. If the fins sweep either the jets or pats or both and/or split with 1(at least 3-1), then we move up into the elite. Baltimore and pack are impact games also. I like this ranking because they have realistically put the jets where I thought they should be.
THE 70,S ARE FINALLY BACK. WELCOME TO THE FINS NEW SB ERA, 2010-
WOW... besides the obvious!
… I can’t believe they put 49ers and Falcons over us! WTF do we have to do to earn alittle respect man!

I'm curious as to who the "big boys" in the East are, besides Brady.
Captain Checkdown and Sausage Smoker?
my top ten and why
1. Saints ( The Champs get No. 1 by default in any preseason ranking by default. Natalya even said that these are subjective without any teams having even played a game. Since this is the case how can you penalize the Champs that haven’t been knocked off their throne yet by anyone?
2. Colts (They lost the Super Bowl, but are the AFC champs)
3. Vikings*(I put an asterik here, and that asteriks name is BRETT FAVRE. If he comes back the Vikes belong here. If he doesn’t, the are out of the top ten)
4. Chargers ( I believe that the addition of Ryan Matthews will negate the holdout of V. Jackson, beside A. Gates is their true No.1 reciever, not Jackson)
5. Cowboys (Dez Bryant – I wouldn’t carry Roy Williams pads either, Like Adam schefter said yesterday, "I’ll take your job, but I won’t take your pads for you!!)
6. Bengals (Defending division champs. Both them and the ravens get a four to six game head start on the steelers)
7.Patriots(Again, defending division champs, but, if their culmination of “fantastic drafts” can’t step up this year, they WILL be fighting the Bills for the cellar dwellar)
8. Cardinals(Matt Leinart has never felt so much pressure to step up and grow up, this season will we see another Ryan Leaf?)
9. Ravens (The Addition of Anquan Boldin alone makes them a contender, but their defense leaves me with alot of questions, especially now that their number 1 pick(Sergio Kindle) is out until the 2nd or third preseason game. That defense needs some youth infused soon)
10. Packers – (Aaron Rodgers is legitand the Packers could win the division even if Favre comes back again)
So there is my top ten, and why. I have to say that I do have the Dolphins at 11 because I believe that all they have done since day 1 is stregthen the roster bit by bit, little by little. The biggest key is going to be the secondary, Particularly the two sophmores(Smith and Davis), and the safety position vacated by G. Wilson. Is Clemons ready to step into that role having sat most of the year?
"Bears, Beets, Battlestar Galactica" - Jim Halpert as Dwight Schrute
Cardinals...
Not so sure on the Cardinals deserving to be 8. I’d take Green Bay, Baltimore, and Pittsburgh over them. Heck, I’d probably put the Giants over them as well.
I do agree with you that the Packers and Ravens would be more deserving once the season starts, I disagree with the Steelers and Giants though
My personal philosophy is that given the fact that this poll is even pre training camp, the 8 division winners deserve the top 8 spots in this type of poll. I know the packers had a better record (by only one game), but they didn’t win the division.
"Bears, Beets, Battlestar Galactica" - Jim Halpert as Dwight Schrute
Well
If power rankings were determined based on team’s positioning in last year’s standings, then all 32 teams would already be set in their respective positions. Then you could’ve just said “My top ten and why – All ranked based on last year’s records.”
You havve a point, So how about this reasoning as well
1. They were the only other team besides the Colts, Saints and Chargers to win their division by more than one game. (Now you are gonna say that it was the NFC West, But they went 8-4 in conference(Ravens 7-5), and 4-2 In the Division (Ravens3-3). Sure the Ravens Gained what the Cardinals lost in Boldin, but who else do the Ravens have at receiver, where as the Cardinals have Breaston, and some guy named Fitzgerald to more than make up for Boldin’s absence, but none of that will matter if Leinart or Anderson cannot get them the ball. I see this becoming Derek Anderson’s team with a FAR SUPERIOR crop of receivers than he had his pro bowl year in cleveland, add in Beanie Wells to take some pressure off of Anderson with his 4.5 yds/carry as a rookie. I think the Cardinals could be a serious threat that is greatly overlooked by the Focus Being on the Saints and the whole NFC east.
"Bears, Beets, Battlestar Galactica" - Jim Halpert as Dwight Schrute
There we go
Now that is a good opinion, even if I may not agree with it. But at least it puts things in your perspective rather than just fitting each team where they finished. :)
I hate the way they have our division
I think people forgot we swept the jets last year. oh yeah and improved. I know they added some players but uh… we did too. Also the Pats can’t be the Pats forever with not making moves so how they can have such a gap between us and the jets is beyond me.

ESPN drinking the Rex Ryan Kool-Aid
They love Ryan because he provides headlines with his dickie-doo gut and his even bigger mouth! The Redskins tried the same thing as the jets a few years ago signing a bunch of high priced FA’s and we all know how that turned out. Look at the long term mess created by Snyder then. What kind of RB are they really getting in Tomlinson? The chargers must know something about Cromartie to let him go. I f he was truly the same shut down corner he was, they would have kept him. Jason Taylor will always be a Dolphin great, BUT his career is on the downhill too. Santonio Holmes has to sit for the first four games, Braylon Edwards is a dropaholic. Their best RB from last year is gone. Nick Mangold and Revis have been disgruntled for more money. Yet these guys are Super Bowl Bound! (sarcasm in case you couldn’t hear it in the typing). Let ESPN keep drinking the Kool-Aid.

OK, my friend... here's my take...
… and let the laughing begin. I have no rhyme or reason, it’s just because. It has nothing to do with what perceived improvement they’ve done… only on what I saw last year… and purely what I think they will do this year. And until the Saints don’t make it, they are number one.

I am probably wrong, and if so I know I will be told numerous times
but to my age-addled mind there has only been 1 pro team built for a 1 year run at a title that actually won said title – the 2003 Marlins.
All others like the Redskins did fall flat on their face. The Jest have basically admitted that they made the additions they did for a run at the SB. Personally I think they did more damage than good. The Phins have built a brickhouse while the Jest have built a shithouse. IMHO
Just think how stupid the average Jest fan is, and then realize that half of them are even stupider! ( a parody of a George Carlin line)
Attorney General of the Matty I Fan Club
The Marlins...
I’d say the 1997 Marlins actually. They stockpiled a lot of old veterans to make their run. The 2003 Marlins actually had a lot of youth. They were built as a team that could play great together for many years The owner just treated them like a one year wonder.
Baseball is an entirely different beast though...
You can stack a team in baseball and get away with it. Its much more difficult to do that in the NFL.

Very true
MLB is the only one of the four major sports where you can sign/release players whenever you want without affecting next season’s roster by some sort of salary cap.
Baseball actually has guaranteed contracts and a soft cap but if you waive a guy
and he is picked up then that no longer counts against your cap.
