Tracking our Pick's Contract Status (UPDATED 6/10 11:00p)

UPDATE 6/10 11:00p

Pittsburgh signed Thaddeus Gibson making Edds signing range 6.  There's been increasing activity in the range of picks that Edds in is although this recent signing of Gibson was for 3 years unlike the normal 4 years.

Buffalo signed Levi Brown making McCoy's signing range 6

With August approaching, one of my concerns is getting all of our picks signed on time. They took care of business in 2008 and 2009 so hopefully this year will be the same. In 2008 they finished up last minute with Henne and did the same with White and Clemons in 2009. Bottom line is it's not the easiest thing in the world to get eight players under contract in a few months and they've done a good job with that so far which isn't something we've experienced much in the past.

There's basically a slotting system in place in the NFL. Nothing in stone but the player's contract is usually tied to the contract given to the player in that slot the previous year. Normally there's a percentage raise involved. The way I look at it, the teams that sign their players early are taking a gamble. It's just easier to sit back and let the picks around you sign to ensure that you're paying market value, no more/no less.

The more players signed before, after and closer to our picks the better. The FO's approach has been a safe one in giving a player the money his slot calls for and the percentage raise that the slot calls for as well. Those numbers are more accurate if the player before and after our guy is signed thus making it easier to get the deal done.

Here's a list of our guys as well as the closest players signed before and after each. Our picks are highlighted and none of them have signed yet. The number you'll find next to our picks is the range of picks that haven't been signed before and after them. IMO the smaller that number gets, the higher the chance of that player being signed.

I've separated each pick into their own capsule with the next closest pick before and after him as well. The number in parenthesis next to our pick is the range of picks that remain unsigned from the closest pick before and after our pick. I call it the "signing range". Following our pick and the picks that bookend our's you'll find the player chosen in our pick's slot in 2009 and 2008 along with the contract terms.

In 2008 the Dolphins did the rest of the NFL a favor by getting Jake Long taken care of before the draft. Early on there were just as many late round picks signing early as there were early round picks. They worked their way to the middle and most teams had their players under contract in time for camp. Not the case last year when the Lions took Stafford without a deal in place which speaks highly of our FO on getting everyone in here on time last year. The trends represented above show more of a resemblance to last year than 2008.

In order to use these players ASAP they need to be signed first. I doubt we'll ever see a rookie walk in here without a contract and assume a starting role. It's just not smart in terms of negotiations. If we leaned on any of these rookies or even made mention that they could start then their agents could use it against us. The quicker they sign, the faster they can be trusted without fear of depending on them without a contract in place and negotiations ongoing.

Most of the information for this post was taken from Backseatfan.com although Walterfootball.com seems like a much better source for monitoring these signings. I'll continue to keep my eyes open and check both of these sources. It's a great site and their list was updated very recently. If you come across a signing that would effect this list then please feel free to post the link in the comments and I'll update the post with it.

Here's a little something for our resident trolls, hope everyone enjoys.
