Quiet on the Atogwe front
Saturday makes the fourth day that safety Oshiomogho Atogwe has been a free agent, and the only sound has been the door slamming shut by supposedly interested teams.
Several teams had been rumored to be interested in pursuing Atogwe, but several including Dallas, San Francisco and Minnesota have claimed they won't pursue him. Miami and Detroit have been other teams mentioned, and no one from either team has yet to comment on their alleged interest.
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said, "I'm ready to go into our season with the safeties we have." Vikings coach Brad Childress said Friday the team "has "no interest." A report out of Detroit said Atogwe's asking price is "extremely high."
As for the notion that Atogwe is looking to leave the Rams because he was upset by the original low tender, general manager Billy Devaney said, "I don't think that's the case. He was probably disappointed, but he understood the business part of it."
Devaney acknowledged that if another team came forward with a huge offer, the Rams would likely be moving on without him, but so far, that hasn't been the case.
Concluded Devaney, "O.J. knows how we feel about him. We are a better team with him here. Our hope is that after he tests the market, he will come back to us. We're trying to get to a happy medium."
The St. Louis Rams declined to offer OJ Atogwe a 10% raise on top of his franchise tag amount from 2009 so as of midnight last night he's now an unrestricted free agent.
For those that aren't familiar with the guy he's Canadian born from Windsor, Ontario and graduated from Stanford. He's had an impressive career on a team that lacked surrounding talent and even last year when he played 12 games due to a shoulder injury he still produced impressive numbers.

Now here's a look at the numbers of Antrel Rolle. They've both played five seasons and Antrel Rolle is now the highest paid FS in the league. The interest was mutual between Rolle and the Fins but the lure of New York and the highest contract for a FS took him away from us.

If you're just looking at the numbers then I think OJ is the choice hands down. When it comes to negotiating a contract there are a few things that are key in comparing the two.
OJ will be 29 at the end of this month. Rolle will be 28 in December of this year so there's a 1.5 year difference. Rolle finished the year healthy while OJ battled a nagging shoulder injury. Rolle hit the market when the money was flowing and OJ is stuck hitting a small market with limited bidders.

We all know what we were told leading up to the Marshall trade and most of us would have taken very bad odds that we wouldn't acquire BM. All 32 teams are still in play but these links I've posted at least go to local and major media outlets that at least are held liable if they are proven to be lying. Basically it's the opposite of the Bleacher Report and it's the best guesses at this point so take it all very lightly until he actually is reported to be visiting someone.

Yea – good work on the stats… It really shows you, what a solid career O J has had. I would really like for Clemmons to WIN the job – but he hasn’t shown enough to be a better choice than a VET like OJ. This guy would really solidify our secondary ! But I fear the money will be too much for the FO to pay…… I am torn about this signing. Lot of $$$ vs getting an instant starter – vs letting a young guy develop. (at a cheaper price) also I don’t think paying too much for a FS is good anyway. But it wouldnt hurt us this “cap free” year. We really should have picked up a decent FS in the draft like Major Wright.

I think a darkhorse signs him
that, or the shoulder issue and the amount of cash he seems to want push people away and he ends up signing back with St. Louis for less than the 110%.
Gonna take a fortnight at least to get this herd down to St. Louis on Mississippi. This glen's gonna be tough to traverse, and that river's got to be 50, 60 meters wide. And God knows how many fathoms. To hell with parliamentary procedure. We've got to wrangle up some cattles!
the thing about St. Louis is that the team is in the middle of being sold
The best way I saw it explained was that the person who owns the team now will never see a return on the money he’ll have to spend right now to get it done.
Them placing the lowest possible tender on him was the biggest sign that they were trying to buy time. Maybe they hoped the team was sold before June 1 and they’d get the go ahead from new ownership to make the investment. Their mistake was not getting it done last year. If they had clearance to just the franchise tag then they should have done what they had to in order to lock him up.
I think what we’re witnessing right now is only going to delay the signing since it’ll take time for him to realize he’s not getting paid like he might think. With the draft past us and teams settled it’s not as upside down as it is when FA begins so most of these teams have likely floated their best offer already. It’ll come down to OJ deciding where he wants to be since I’d imagine the value most of these teams have in mind is very close. Even if the team has leaked that they aren’t interested, I still think they’ll be in play.
In fact I’m still hoping for the Fins but I’ll put my money on the Eagles since they were the first to leak they weren’t interested

And what somebody commented on earlier about CC having endeared himself to the coaching staff, I put a lot of stock in. The vets and coaching staff seem to have taken a liking to him, and to the obvious work he has put into readying himself for this competition.
Methinks perhaps last year he just didn’t prepare himself at all for the role he played when filling in for Gibril. Either that, or it’s just abundantly more difficult learning the position in a 3-4 than we give him credit for.
Or, maybe he’s like a lot of people and just needs a lot of time and repetition before he shows he gets it. He seems to be getting it now, so at this point, I would almost be surprised to see us entertain the idea of bringing him down here. Unless one of our guys gets hurt and he’s somehow still available.
Gonna take a fortnight at least to get this herd down to St. Louis on Mississippi. This glen's gonna be tough to traverse, and that river's got to be 50, 60 meters wide. And God knows how many fathoms. To hell with parliamentary procedure. We've got to wrangle up some cattles!

My instintctive reaction to all this...
is that the dolphins are in the mix for him.
I remember well how Miami was looking at Rolle and also had Ryan Clark here for a visit and made him an offer.
Really, all that has changed since then is that we drafted Jones. Is that one move, drafting Jones, enough to change Miami’s interest in a proven starter like OJ?
My feeling is nope, drafting Jones is an insurance policy and Miami will certainly let the guys they have at the spot compete….if they must, but if they can get OJ at a reasonable number, then I bet he’s here.
If someone throws crazy cash at OJ though, then I can’t see Miami trying to match it…

I just happened to catch a comment from Darlington that said he felt Bell was just coming into his prime
I suppose I could see that compared to some other Safeties in the past but that putting Bell in a discussion with a group of great players.
I get the feeling that an injury is what will eventually force this team to move on. He stays healthy and it’s his job until he gives someone else an opportunity to take it.

However,
didn’t we trade for Marshall after showing interest in those FA FS? I know it’s uncapped and we have, what, the second richest owner in the NFL, but there are still books to balance, and we spent a lot of money on Karlos and Brandon. I’m not entirely certain the willingness is still there after having brought BMarsh aboard.

but my speculation is simply that the dolphins will be in the mix although within reason (moneywise).

My parents live in a very nice area of NJ
On the river around the corner from them Jeter had a mansion built. My buddy was doing construction and I got on site before construction and got to see this network of secret tunnels that were built that led down to the river. No I had to deal with him at the airport
after 9/11 when they sent us out there to act as security. I was in one of the American terminals and I always seemed to work the vip line that they have over there which is good because I knew nothing would ever happen except for when some douche that thought he did not have to follow the same rules threw a fit. It was usually easily fixed by informing them that you can either comply, leave the building or go to jail. Your choice!

I’m just not that big on Atogwe. Not at the amount he wants. I’ve seen people ranking him everywhere from 2nd best FS to one of the worst. With all the FA money we’ve thrown at Dansby and Marshall, plus the money Jake is making, not only do we have 3 high-paid guys, we have 3 of the highest paid guys at their positions. Add that to Henne, Vontae, and Sean Smith all looking at big contracts in a few years if they continue to progress, and I just don’t see Atogwe being worth a huge contract that could essentially handicap us when the time comes to pay some of the other up-and-coming guys on our roster. I’m liking what I’m hearing about Clemons, after liking pretty much everything I saw of him last year as an unpolished rookie. He’s got the speed and ballhawking ability to be a force back there if he can wrap his head around the scheme, so I have no problems with him starting this year.

I think the Rams part is BS. Their owner is in the middle of selling the team and anything spent is not going back in his pocket. lol I completely understand making public statements in support of soon-to-be-gone players
because if something falls through or comes up, and you have to keep that player, it’s not wise for him to be fully aware of you not wanting him. I understand all the bluffing that goes on during the draft. I don’t understand bluffing when it comes to one single FA on the market. What happens if he hears you say publicly that you aren’t interested? Insulting a little bit, especially to guys with fragile egos. Saying “we are interested” doesn’t make you lose any leverage, but it gets the guy into the building IMO

Talks about OJ being a Lions fan growing up. If he wants to be close to Canada then I think the Lions should be considered. They’re actually not looking all that bad. I could see them battling to be .500 this year and with a good offseason maybe being in good shape for 2011.

since 2007 let the young guys play thats what rebuilding positions is about theres enough veterans around the defense that clemons will be fine and just let bell yell out the coverage audibles
I think you're overlooking his 6 FFs in 2008
and he was on his was to a very good year last year before the injuries caught up to him. I’ve got no problem with a preference to go young or be concerned with the injuries he’s suffered but to say he hasn’t been good since 2007 is just wrong. You could say he was elite in 2007 but that doesn’t mean he wasn’t great in 2008 and on his was in 2009.

it is pretty weird to me that this guy is not on a team yet. i mean i can see acting not interested to try and drive his asking price down. just still seems like some team would have bit by now.

I thought the Sporting News was quality. Vinnie Iyer is so clueless that he thinks Chris Clemons is an outside LB that we’re converting to FS. He also makes a ridiculous assumption on Hamlin and suggests that Reshad Jones could be starting at FS too.
For those that still care it look like the Rams are still the assumed favorites to land OJ. I think OJ may have been promised cash from a final 8 team that will become unrestricted by the final 8 plan on July 22.

The final 8 teams in the playoffs were restricted in who and how much they could offer contracts
The Jets for example had to wait until Jay Feely signed elsewhere in order to sign someone else. Same for the rest of the 8 teams. On July 22 those restrictions will be lifted so if a team like the Jets wants OJ then he’s got to wait until July 22. I’m not sure if there’s anything stopping them from making that point to OJ and his agent but even if they weren’t allowed the word would make it to them one way or another. With the lack of activity I’m guessing that might be the case.
