ZACH THOMAS vs KARLOS DANSBY

ZACH THOMAS  vs KARLOS DANSBY career Stats comparison

First let me say that I am excited over the signing of Dansby to play inside linebacker for the next 5 years. This was a GREAT FA addition and at a HUGE position of need for the Dolphins.  I am a believer that the MLB is probably your most important defensive position.  The great ones stop the run, and plug the middle of the field almost single handedly .  They are "tackling machines" consistently  leading the team and being the guy the team rallies around for goal line stops, and making plays in the run game.

You have to consider that they played in different schemes – but looking at the careers of both players (Dansby through 6 years) – a couple of things stand out. First – nobody – I mean nobody – was better against the run than ZACH THOMAS.  He was a TACKLING MACHINE for many years for the Miami Dolphins.

He doesn’t get enough credit for the numbers he put up over a long period of time, probably because the dolphins had little postseason success.  Zach Thomas put up some HUGE tackle numbers, flying all over the field – his instincts were second to none at MLB, and at only  5’11" 228… If he had been the size of Ray Lewis imagine the damage he would have inflicted !

Comparing their first 6 years in the league

ZACH THOMAS                                  KARLOS DANSBY:

810 tackles (solo & assisted)        559 tackles

10 sacks                                         25.5   sacks

11  INT’s     4 INT TD’s                   10 INT’s   2 INT TD’s

9 FF                                                 12 FF

34 Pass DEF                                    30  Pass DEF

It’s clear that ZACH THOMAS  was the better LB… although Karlos was a better pass rusher.  You could say KD was a big play LB recording a few more FF – but Zach had two more INT TD’s which are much bigger plays than forced fumbles….Zach wins the battle of stats hands down.

I post all this to remind people of how great Zach was, and to show that Dansby is a very good player – but we need more from him the next few years.  We need him to post at least 120 plus tackles, 4-5 sacks, 2 FF, 5 Pass DEF and a couple of INT’s per year.    We spent a LOT OF MONEY on KD – and I think he is worth it, but he needs to back it up on the field for sure.  Playing under Nolan, I expect Karlos to take another step forward and become a top 3 linebacker.  We need this if we are to one day become a SB champion.   He is in the prime of his career, and was the best FA LB available…. We need some players to step up and become STARS – Karlos Dansby and Brandon Marshall should be the guys, along with Chad Henne and Vontae Davis I believe.

Also – this FO needs to let Zach retire as a Dolphin soon – he earned it.
