Draft Focus @ SOLB on Derrick Morgan

              I have serious doubts that D Morgan even drops to us, but you never know so I have went ahead and made him my first Draft Focus, he is the SOLB we need and in my opinion is head and shoulders above all others in this years draft at that position.

We have many needs in this years draft and OLB is one of the biggest priorities, even if JT comes back his replacement is needed, I think Wake is locked down to the WOLB, I know he played a lot on the strong side last year but I still think he is being groomed for the weak side, what's more I think he will be VERY effective, he may need to grow in some areas but he will scare teams on that edge.

To play the SOLB in the 3-4 your always going to transition a DE from college, this is true of all our SOLBs under the Tuna regime, this is also true of the Steelers, actually they draft DEs to play both OLBs, so the argument that he hasn't played a lot standing-up doesn't really matter, most 3-4 SOLB prospects coming out of college haven't, because you basically need an athletic DE to play the spot, not a LB.

My player comparison for D Morgan is LaMarr Woodley, the stud SOLB of the Steelers. Their is a similarity in some ways, both players weighed in at the combine at 266, avg 40 times but good 10 yard splits especially Morgan 1.60, that is a quick ten yards for a 266lb man, both players had their critics as it pertains to OLB, both high motor hard working guys, and D Morgan just looks like him when he's playing.

Here we have the highlights/lowlights, this is a good look at Morgan, it's long, over 8 mins but you get to see all the stuff, you will see him wrecking double teams at times, pushing lineman into the backfield, and blowing past them, there's that very good 10 yard split showing itself, burst fast, strong, and great body control.

There is one play in particular that I would like  you to watch, at 3:20 a play starts where Morgan has to read and react on an option toss and mirrors a small shifty RB to the side lines for a 1 yard gain, this play best illustrates his athleticism for the SOLB position, notice how in control his body is as he stops and starts with the RB, and closes the gap, this is perfect read and react pursue technics.

Spiller fans please don't watch the first play :>}

Derrick Morgan isn't the only SOLB prospect in the draft but in my opinion he is the best, I think we would be fortunate indeed if the triumvirate was able to get Derrick Morgan, but this area needs to be addressed no matter what, there are certainly other good SOLB prospects in this draft so even if we bring back JT, we need our next SOLB.
