Let me begin by saying that I am unabashedly supportive of this, the Trifecta's third draft class. After taking a step back to consider the 2008, 2009, and 2010 drafts in their entirety, it's pretty obvious that Bill Parcells and Co. are not exactly busting down the door to select the flashiest prospects. Essentially devoid of the sexy, "ESPN picks", our Dolphins instead continue to fill out their roster with the "big nasties". Oftentimes, you'll hear these kind of individuals described as "lunch pail" players, because that's essentially what they are: no nonsense, nose to the grindstone men who know how and when to work hard. Long, Henne, Langford, Hartline, Odrick, Misi, Edds—these are our lunch pail draftees, and in all likelihood, our future team captains (my bet is for Long and Henne in 2010).
Over the weekend Jeff Ireland was questioned about the high percentage of team's draft picks that had been team captains in college, and his response was pretty telling:
When a guy's a team captain and people are leaning on them to make decisions for their football team, that's big for me. It's something I evaluate pretty heavy. I like having good guys on the team. Get more out of them. Develop faster.
Toughness. Intelligence. Accountability. Character. You'll never see these traits effectively quantified at the scouting combine or in box scores, but they're consistently fundamental aspects of champions.
