I can't say that I am too happy about this years draft. Find out why after the jump.
Let me start off by saying that I loved the decision to move down in the 1st round and add a 2nd round pick. However, I do not think the Dolphins capatalized on the move. With those first two picks, I thought they could really use them on need positions and great players who will be able to contribute immediately. They didn't. And it was all down hill from there.
Jared Odrick is going to be a good player (I hope), but is he really an upgrade this upcoming season over Randy Starks, whose being forced out of his 3-4 DE position (where he excels and belongs) to play NT because we passed on Terrence Cody in the 2nd. Starks is undersized at 6’3, 305 Ibs top play at the nose. He is going to stuggle transitioning to his newly found position unless he gains atleast 15 Ibs. He’s going to get double teamed alot! And he won’t be able to handle it. That really weakens our defensive line as he was our only pass rush threat from the line last season. And we passed on Jerry Hughes for Odrick! What? Why? That was mind blowing.
I believe John Jerry will be a starter, but at the expense of Justin Smiley, who when healthy is one of the top guards in the entire league. Justin Smiley will now be traded or released which is really a mistake in my opinion. The offensive line was the least of our worries! We could have used that pick on a on a FS or NT, or even a future TE or RB! Jimmy Graham would have been a nice selection there, although I’m a bit biased on this one. LOL. but really, any pass catching TE would have been great there. Or how about a FS? Major Wright? Hello!
The Dolphins run tons of 2-Tight End sets and ever since David Martin’s departure, we haven’t really had a threat across from Anthony Fasano. That also has really affected Fasano’s production. Last season, teams would pay more attention to him because there was no one across from him who can make a play. Having someone across from him who can catch the football would allow Fasano to see some more one on one’s thus balancing out our offense a little more. They could have even taken a TE in the 3rd, 4th or 5th and Instead decided to pass each time. That’s a need left unfilled.
Reshad Jones is a Strong Safety. I like the pick, but only because he could be our SS Yeremiah Bell's future successor. But if Jones is our starting Free Safety next season, than that’s a hole in our defense and another position left unfilled. Major Wright would a have been a perfect pick the third round. Or how about trading up in the round to take Morgan Burnett (Who they coveted) like they did for A.J. Edds and Reshad Jones in the 4th and 5th rounds.
And how about that swap of 4th round picks AND a 6th round pick with the Cowboys to move up just a few picks and take Edds. If you’re going to give up a 6th round pick to take an outside linebacker, you might as well moved a few extra picks higher to take a rusher, not A.J. Edds who offers you nothing in the pass rush. Edds will be nothing more than a back-up this season with Koa Misi and Cameron Wake penciled in as the starters. I know they will use him to play on 3rd-passing situations in replacement for Misi or Wake, who are converted DE’s and are still learning how to play in coverage in the OLB position and Edds happens to be an excellent pass coverage LB. So for that, I like Edds. But he would have likely been there had they stayed at their original spot. Is a 3rd-down linebacker really worth giving up a 6th round pick to move just a few picks in the 4th? They could just as easily moved up to get Griffen by giving up 5th and 6th round pick. The CB they drafted, Nolan Caroll, they reached for him in the 5th. He would have been there in the 6th. But that’s a another story. If we're going to trade up in the 4th, it should have been for a an actual pass rusher that we are still lacking. But ofcourse, I wouldn’t have even brought this up if our front office would have taken Jerry Hughes in the 1st round.
Misi, by the way, wasn’t much of a pass rusher in college. He had just a total of 10 sacks in his 4 year career at Utah. What are they thinking? What, suddenly he’ll become a great pass rusher in the pro’s even though he wasn’t much of one in 4 years at the college level? Listen, you either have it or you don’t. I’m sure he’s going to be a solid starter in the pros, but he’s not going to give us 10+ sacks a year. We needed pass rushers, and I do not consider Misi a pass rusher. Good player, but not what we really needed.
In the top two rounds, the Fins should be looking for a game changers. Players who will come in a difference from day one and be a difference maker for your team. Misi is not a game changer unfortunately. He is a good player, dont get me wrong, but opposing offenses will likely never have to focus on him when preparing to play the Dolphins. Certainly not this season. Terrence Cody is a game changer and would have made For a better pick, especially if they would have taken Jerry Hughes in the 1st which was the logical thing to do. They could have really used a guy like Cody in front of Karlos Dansby and Channing Crowder. The perfect scenario would have been to have Cody play NT on 1st and 2nd downs, with Hughes at OLB rushing the QB. And on 3rd down passing situations, the Fins would would have had Jason Ferguson (when he comes back from his suspension) in for Cody, and Edds in for either Wake or Hughes. That would uprgraded our defense. I really don’t know adding another DE and not adding a legit NT, or pass rusher or FS upgrades our defense.
It was just awful! Their whole draft was questionable. I’m just so glad it’s over! I have nothing against these kids, and I will still root after today no matter what as they are Dolphins now. But I can’t bullshit and say that I’m happy about my teams selections cause I’m really not. The Fins came into this offseason with question marks at certain positions, and it looks like they will enter next season with several holes left unfilled.
I should acknowledge that the front office did fill in our WR and ILB, with Brandon Marshall and Karlos Dansby. And believe me, those were great additions. But the draft should have been properly used to fill in our other positions of need, and I don’t feel as though the Dolphins were successful in filling any of those needs. They instead made no major upgrades to there team while the Jets and Patriots stockpiled on talent and really separated from the Dolphins. What a disaster. And that’s the the grade I give them, D for disaster.
My Fins Draft Grade: D
My Fins Draft Re-Do:
1- Jerry Hughes, OLB (Best pass rusher in the draft, period.)
2- Terrence Cody, NT
3- Morgan Burnett, FS (Trade a 6th and move up a few picks to secure him and not let anyone jump you.)
4- A.J. Edds, OLB (Same as Burnett)
5- Reshad Jones, SS (Yeremiah Bell's successor. Not a FS. If he could return kicks too, that would make him even more valuable.)
6(1)- Anthony McCoy, TE (another weapon for Henne.)
6(2)- Nolan Carroll, CB (He would have been there in the 6th round. They reached. Although he does provide more value if he can also return kicks)
7(1)- Another Pass Rusher
7(2)- Punter (to compete with Brandon Fields)
That would have given us 3 starters while also keeping Justin Smiley at Guard. And it would give us a few good players off the bench in Anthony McCoy and A.J. Edds, and also potentially in Nolan Carroll if he can return kicks.
This draft grade: A+
Instead, we have some major holes going into the season. Not a good weekend at all.
