Dolphins still sign NT Ferguson
Armando Salguero reports.
The Dolphins have re-signed veteran nose tackle Jason Ferguson to a new contract today, despite the fact he is suspended the first eight games of the 2010 season. Terms of the contract are not yet available
Ferguson's suspension will begin the first week of the season and carry for the eight games. It doesn't matter if he is healthy or not.

PFT reporting as well.
I just noticed that "Foy" made a comment about this a bit ago, but I'm gonna leave this up because I think this is important enough to be a post. Interesting reading material. -)

ferguson tends to be injury prone anyway
so instead of losing him midway through the season we will finish strong with him

I actually agree with you on this one Deuce
Best to have a 36 yr old NT strong and mostly fresh at the end of the year especially if we are in the playoff hunt.

Wonder what that means...
could it be that we are comfortable with Soliai for 8 games? Does it mean Fergie’s suspension might not hold up? Does it mean we plan on drafting a later round guy, and are protecting ourselves if he just can’t get on the field at all?
Lots of different scenario’s here, but I think the number 1 thing is that we aren’t going to be DESPERATE for a NT, because we will at least have Ferguson for a playoff push provided none of our other options work out there.

Right. Not saying we aren’t, but now we don’t NEED to address this position early in the draft.

This is Eric Green all over again.
This is Parcells hedging his bet. I bet he has a NT targeted in the draft. If that player isn’t there, he has a fallback NT in Fergie. If he does get his player and if he shows that he can play during camp, Fergie gets cut, just like Eric Green.
Let's get offensive this offseason!
"It is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing." MACBETH
I don't think they're completely comfortable with Soliai or any of the NT prospects in the draft.
I believe this is why they re-signed Ferg. This allows them to bring in a project NT through the draft or UDFA and not have to depend on him to contribute right away. Soliai is serviceable enough to get them through the first half of the season, and the addition of Dansby will help out tremendously.
I used to think I had a drinking problem.
So I stopped thinking.
I still hope we get Cam Thomas

what is parcells thinking…why bring back a guy who will not be able to contribute until week 9….i really dont like this move
right
I think he had to be cheap, or his suspension has to be getting overturned for this signing to happen. I actually like it because late in the year is when injuries, especially in the trenches, start to take out key players, and it can’t hurt to then then bring in a guy who was your starter last year and is now fresh.. I feel like it’s a pretty good move

what i don't like is that it is really time for us to find a replacement for him
he has always been solid, but not awesome. It is time to get the guy that we want manning the position for the next 5-6 yrs. If we find that guy in the draft, are we really going to play him the first half of the year and then pull him out just to play Ferg?
-LCFF
by LeftCoastFinFan on Mar 9, 2010 7:37 PM EST up reply actions
no
I think if we draft a guy and he’s “the guy,” then Ferguson might just be cut before he’s activated.. or brought back into the fold as a backup. I think this signing is basically insurance if we don’t find a guy, or if there is an injury

very true...
NT’s are very hit or miss. Some of the better prospects at NT or DT even in recent years have yet to produce, like Dorsey. While other teams pluck guys late in the draft and have great success.
Dorsey was always projected as a 4-3 DT
Last year they converted him to DE in a 3-4. I don’t think he is a fair example.

College Players normally play 10-13 games...
So if we are playing a rookie, he will just be hitting the rookie wall by then.
What better timing to start taking some of his snaps and giving them to Fergie (even if he turns out to be a stud, it would be nice to have a stud who is fresher in the games anyway)?
It is a long season folks and the NT takes a LOT of wear and tear.
Thinking positively, we get him back just in time for our stretch run into the playoffs!
1st: Earl Thomas S; 2nd: Lamarr Houston DE; 3rd: Emmanuel Sanders WR; 4th: Arthur Jones NT; 6A: Kade Weston NT; 6B:Colin Peek TE; 6C Adrian Tracy OLB; 7A: Thomas Austin G/C; 7B: Scott Long WR;
Thanks for the shout out Matty

I Love How This Happened
Jason Ferguson uses HGH or Vitamin S to help rehab and recover from his injury last season.
He knows he is on the bubble because of his age.
So he takes the stuff and becomes an instant insurance policy half-way through the season.
The Phins will proceed to look for another NT and Ferguson will have plenty of time to get in good shape.
It’s a win. Worse case scenario is Ferg’s replacement doesn’t play well and Ferg replaces him after he is reinstated.
Love it. Meanwhile Jason has used some “supplements” to recover.
He’s a Parcells guy alrigt.
I run a lazy, booze addled & thoroughly unprofessional Dolphins blog: www.thephinisher.com.
Official Grand Poobah of the Chad Henne fan club and bandwagon. Some of you have a lot to prove before you can climb on.
they still have to get somebody relatively early...
maybe not 1st round early, but at least round 2-3 early.
We already know what Soliai limitations are and I think they need more than him at the position, even if Ferg will be back for the 2nd half of the season.
I’m thinking rounds 1-3 for our draft play out with some combination of a: S, OLB, NT with WR a somewhat less likely possibility.
Granted that can all, and probably will, change in the leadup to the draft.
