I want contract details

because I tend to think it’s a solid insurance move. It allows us to not reach in the draft because we aren’t desperate for a NT, and it offers us a Plan B if we do take a guy in the draft and he doesn’t work out, or if there are injuries along the front and we need to add depth mid-season. I don’t think he’ll just immediately be reinserted as the starter in Week 9, but it gives us some freedom with that position in case we can’t get our guy in the draft or whatever..

I am completely lost when it comes to the decesions this so called great regime is making….we sign an old DT who will not be able to contribute until week 9…who cares how cheap he came….then we dont even make an attempt (so far) to upgrade out WR position…we cut wilson without having a replacement…that just created another hole…things better turn around quick this off-season or this will be a long season

by thegr8one on Mar 9, 2010 7:47 PM EST reply actions

Wilson sucked

you could say that was addition by subtraction. Obviously they weren’t giving him a second chance no matter who replaces him.

We haven’t even made it to the draft, so I don’t get the impatience with the WR position.

And what exactly is the problem with the Ferguson deal? He started and played well last season, and with him coming back in week 9, he’ll be fresh for a playoff push if we are in that position, as opposed to wearing down when we need him most.

i think u arent really looking at the fact that

we resigned a decent NT who can at the very least provide a bit of mentoring to the young guys, resign a future HoF (maybe a strech?) quarterback as a mentor to our young guy, fill a gaping hole with arguably the best free agent OLB and cut, in the oppinion of most fans, an AUFUL free saftey

don't forget adding "another " backup QB..

I’m totally happy they decided to sign a 3rd backup QB while Boldin was being traded for a decent package.

Afterall, we needed Pennington more than Boldin. I mean right? A 3rd string QB is far more important and does more for a team than a elite WR making plays on the field……

NOT.

That’s $2.75mil in his pocket if he wins the job, you better believe he’s going after it. Last thing we need is controversy with a young QB

he wants to keep his family here, so he wants some incentives to stay here as well

James T Paulson

by Jtpdolphins2009 on Mar 9, 2010 11:10 PM EST up reply actions

He's going into his 2nd season as starter

both Matt Ryan and Joe Flacco struggled compared to their rookie campaigns. Most, if not all, QB’s struggle early in their careers. I am not talking about him sucking horribly for a long stretch, I’m talking about him not starting the season on fire. Say, a 3 INT game, or a close loss in which he had a chance to bring us to victory and failed, something along those lines. I think it’s almost guaranteed he will struggle at some point, especially if we don’t drastically improve our WR corps.. If he doesn’t struggle at all, than none of this matters because it means he’s a true franchise QB for the forseeable future

Who’s the Colts 3rd stringer? Or the Saints? Or the Chargers? Cowboys? Giants? You should never be introduced to the 3rd stringer, because it means something has gone horribly wrong with your starter, and you are usually fucked either way

It's always been questionable at best if Pat White would be an NFL-level quarterback.

Even when they did let Pat get into games it was never as a full-fledged quarterback. He attempted a total of five passes on the year in 13 different games.

I hated seeing him on the field. I wanted to kick my TV over when he came in for that 2-pt conversion against Tennessee (fortunately Ricky went airborne and took it in).

Ultimately, there can be no greater indictment of Pat White as a quarterback for the Miami Dolphins than the re-signing of Pennington. The only thing that saves him from trying to find some niche role would be to trade Thigpen, which wouldn’t be a good idea at all.

I don't think Pennington signing

has anything to do with White’s performance last year. CP will iether start or be 3rd string TT is the backup. Its not like its CP and White viaing for the backup positiion.

Third string qbs hardly get mentioned and don’t mean crap except when you are in Miami and his name is CP. Then its everything.

Pennington isn't going to start, and you know that.

Bill Parcells isn’t an idiot. Jeff Ireland isn’t an idiot. Tony Sparano isn’t an idiot. They aren’t orchestrating some conspiracy to keep Pennington in the starting role.

And because they’re not idiots, they’re not going to waste a roster spot on four quarterbacks, which means Pat White is out of luck. I highly doubt they’ll make this decision arbitrarily, so it probably has something to do with last year, including the game action we all see and the countless, behind-the-scenes work no one gets a whiff of.

This is part of the post I was repsonding to. I don’t like/understand why they would give 2.5 mil to a 3rd string QB and not go after a “need” of a elite WR at a fair price.

You have no proof that one had anything to do with the other.....

Very likely signing Pennington had nothing to do with Boldin

It was the decisions

to sign another backup QB and not trading for a elite WR see the post I repsonded to please.

NEVER-)

Its not that we sign Pennington. Its that we could’ve gotten Boldin and a 5th. That would’ve solved our WR problems and we would still have our 1st 2 picks to address other needs with the team.

Seriously Neo its done. Boldin is in Baltimore 4 good.. If you want a wr then please start talking about some other options that you think the Phins should take

Good move

If whoever we attempt to plug in or even if we have to run 4-3 at least we’ll have an option mid-season.

even if we draft a wide receiver in the draft…we all know it takes around 3 to 4 years for wr to develope in this league..we need to get an establish player now…thats the position that needs a veteran mentor..considering how young we are at the position

by thegr8one on Mar 9, 2010 7:54 PM EST reply actions

WR's don't need mentors

how many young guys step in and perform with no vet on the squad? You just need to find a good player.

I agree that we should get an established WR like Marshall, but I don’t see it happening.

I don't think so

we knew about his suspension before re-signing him. If it was an issue, we wouldn’t have signed him. It’s not like we were counting on him, and then mid-season he gets bumped. We are well aware of the situation 5 months before the season…

What would you have done?

Thegr8one,

I think you’re stuck on the fact they caught him with a banned drug and he’s been suspended for 8 games. Get past it. Move on.

Now look at our situation again. We have Paul Solia as a starting NT who can’t cut it, not in a 3-4 defense where we need a beast.

We have a draft coming up but don’t expect us to get either of the two best NT’s with our 12th pick. When we do draft a NT it’ll take time to groom him into a starter.

So who’s the best available free agent NT out there? Guess what.. it’s Ferguson by a long shot. Yes at his age. Yes even if he’s going to miss the first 8 games.

I bet we got a heavy discount since he’s missing so many games, but again who cares? It’s an uncapped year. The only way this hurts us is that we’re burning up a roster spot for 8 games.. hmm .. worth it IMO.

If we signed Fergie...then whats the problem with marshall

we should go after Marshall…why arent we talking bout Fergie’s character

by thegr8one on Mar 9, 2010 8:09 PM EST reply actions

where's the character concern?

we don’t have a clue what the drug was… it could’ve been a weight-loss product like StarCaps.. it could’ve been to help him get over the injury, who knows. How is that a character issue? And if that’s an issue, how is ANYTHING that our guys do not an issue? Will Allen publicly stated he’ll start, how is that not a character concern since he’s saying he’s better than our rookies? Davone Bess got in trouble in high school.. a lot. Crowder talks a whole lot. JT took offseason workouts off to do a dance competition… If an unknown substance is a character concern, all of that is a character concern.

well said

He’s hit on far more FA’s and draft picks than missed, including nailing 3 out of his first 4 in year 1 and 2 out of his first 3 (and 3 of 5) in year 2. The first round is 50/50, he’s hit 2 of 2. The 2nd round is about 30-40%, he’s hit 2 of 4 (not counting Merling, who his a solid contributor, that would make it 3 of 4). The 3rd is right around 30% success rate, he’s 1 of 2. He’s doing GREAT in the draft, and that’s before I mention the late rounders that are contributing in a big way.

Everybody likes to pick on the big name FA’s that we missed on, most notably Gerbil and Ernest, but guys like Justin Smiley, Jake Grove, Randy Starks, Jason Taylor, Charlie Anderson, Cam Wake, not to mention the trades for Ferguson, Fasano, Tony McDaniel.. he’s completely retooled our roster in 2 years, and we’re going into year 3 talking about making a playoff push with 1 or 2 moves…

You go ahead and question him, I’ll say that he’s been more successful the past 2 years than most if not all GM’s in the league.

It's funny how everyone forgets how many guys we have that are major contributors

that were FA’s or draft picks in the last 2 years. All they see is Ted Ginn, Gerbil, and guys like that. I’ll be the first to admit he’s made some bad moves, but none of them has crippled us, or really even set us back at all..

I disagree

The Pat White pick set us back some.. For instance if we take Paul Kruger and groom him under Matt Roth for a season then we’d have the perfect OLB opposite Wake. Now we have to draft one either too high or get lucky with one falling. I’m saying this because when our pick came that’s who I wanted us to take

That's what Parcells does. He builds up the roster and turns a shitty team into a respectable one.

He has done it everywhere he has gone. Now here’s the “but”: He doesn’t build championship teams. He fails to take them to the next level. A Parcell’s run team hasn’t won a playoff game, let alone a championship, in over a decade. That’s forever in the NFL.

IMO, the reason why he can’t turn a good team into a championship team is that he doesn’t acquire offensive playmakers. And I don’t think he has any interest in getting those types of players again this year. He won’t draft Spiller or Bryant. He didn’t make a play for Boldin. That’s just who he is.

Let's get offensive this offseason!
