Geographic advantages and thoughts on league-wide realignment

I’ve always looked at the way NFL divisions are aligned and wondered what kind of impact it has on teams.

The first thing that came to mind is the travel required.  After the jump you’ll see a ton of data I’ve compiled that I think proves there is a clear advantage and disadvantage based on location or distance to the rest of the NFL and your division.

After the data I’ll explain why I think realignment in the NFL would cut costs, increase ticket sales and remove a competitive advantage that some teams have.  Check it out after the jump.

Star-divide

Which teams benefit from their geographic location?  At the top of this list you’ll find the Indianapolis Colts who travel the shortest distance throughout the NFL.  This list isn’t very telling since the NFL rotates opponents.  Ultimately you play everyone over a timeframe so I won’t pick this apart.  Comparing the top to the bottom you’ll see that the Colts travel almost three times less then the Seahawks on average.

Everything is in miles and the more interesting information is in the divisional comparisons below.

1    Indianapolis Colts  Indianapolis, IN

26610

2    Cincinnati Bengals Cincinnati, OH

26744

3    Tennessee Titans  Nashville, TN

27596

4    St. Louis Rams  St. Louis, MO

27716

5    Chicago Bears  Chicago, IL

28062

6    Cleveland Browns Cleveland, OH

28445

7    Pittsburgh Steelers Pittsburgh, PA

28925

8    Detroit Lions  Detroit, MI

29565

9    Atlanta Falcons Atlanta, GA

30135

10  Kansas City Chiefs  Kansas City, MO

30738

11  Carolina Panthers Charlotte, NC

31331

12  Washington Redskins  Landover, MD

31897

13  Baltimore Ravens Baltimore, MD

32010

14  Buffalo Bills Orchard Park, NY

32037

15  Green Bay Packers Green Bay, WI

32826

16  Philadelphia Eagles Philadelphia, PA

33636

17  New Orleans Saints New Orleans, LA

34980

18  Minnesota Vikings Minneapolis, MN

34982

19  New York Jets East Rutherford, NJ

35054

20  New York Giants East Rutherford, NJ

35059

21  Jacksonville Jaguars Jacksonville, FL

35363

22  Dallas Cowboys Arlington, TX

35953

23  Houston Texans Houston, TX

38330

24  Tampa Bay Buccaneers Tampa, FL

39630

25  New England Patriots Foxborough, MA

41068

26  Denver Broncos Denver, CO

41674

27  Miami Dolphins Miami Gardens, FL

44808

28  Arizona Cardinals  Glendale, AZ

55110

29  San Diego Chargers  San Diego, CA

63034

30  Oakland Raiders  Oakland, CA

67497

31  San Francisco 49ers  San Francisco, CA

67704

32  Seattle Seahawks  Seattle, WA

70873

Now lets jump into the divisions and see if anyone has a huge advantage in the distance they travel every year.  Like the list above, the team at the top of the list travels the least amount of distance.  Keep in mind this is the distance the team travels in miles to other teams in their division.

AFC East

1  New York Jets

1845

2  New England Patriots

2154

3  Buffalo Bills

2188

4  Miami Dolphins

4137

This is what prompted me to do this.  I knew the Dolphins were traveling a lot more then the other teams in the AFC East.  During their three road trips the Dolphins travel more then double the distance compared to the Jets.

AFC North

1  Pittsburgh Steelers

664

2  Cleveland Browns

753

3  Cincinnati Bengals

1046

4  Baltimore Ravens

1141

Now compared to the AFC East you’ll see that teams in the North have it easy.  Baltimore comes in fourth but still more then 600 miles less then the Jets.

AFC South

1  Tennessee Titans

1668

2  Indianapolis Colts

2187

3  Houston Texans

2676

4  Jacksonville Jaguars

3245

In the South you’ll see the Jaguars travel almost double the distance compared to the Titans.

AFC West

1  Denver Broncos

2944

2  San Diego Chargers

3179

3  Oakland Raiders

3556

4  Kansas City Chiefs

4009

So far you’d think this is the division that travels the most but just wait for the NFC West.  Regardless, the teams in the AFC West travel the most on average in the AFC.

NFC East

1  Washington Redskins

1715

2  Philadelphia Eagles

1736

3  New York Giants

1888

4  Dallas Cowboys

3024

Dallas jumps out to me here as a team that has a clear disadvantage compared to the other three.

NFC North

1  Green Bay Packers

717

2  Chicago Bears

895

3  Minnesota Vikings

1381

4  Detroit Lions

1465

Similar to the AFC North, the NFC North travel short distances but the Packers do travel half the amount that the Lions do.

NFC South

1  Atlanta Falcons

1168

2  Carolina Panthers

1535

3  Tampa Bay Buccaneers

1694

4  New Orleans Saints

1837

669 miles represents the smallest difference between first and fourth throughout the NFL.

NFC West

1  San Francisco 49ers

3615

2  Arizona Cardinals

3696

3  Seattle Seahawks

4346

4  St. Louis Rams

5657

The NFC West travels the most in the NFL.

Now lets look at a comparison using those same division numbers but compared league-wide.  Looking at first and last you'll see the Steelers travel eight and a half times less then the Rams for games within their division.

Overall

1    Pittsburgh Steelers

664

2    Green Bay Packers

717

3    Cleveland Browns

753

4    Chicago Bears

895

5    Cincinnati Bengals

1046

6    Baltimore Ravens

1141

7    Atlanta Falcons

1168

8    Minnesota Vikings

1381

9    Detroit Lions

1465

10  Carolina Panthers

1535

11  Tennessee Titans

1668

12  Tampa Bay Buccaneers

1694

13  Washington Redskins

1715

14  Philadelphia Eagles

1736

15  New Orleans Saints

1837

16  New York Jets

1845

17  New York Giants

1888

18  New England Patriots

2154

19  Indianapolis Colts

2187

20  Buffalo Bills

2188

21  Houston Texans

2676

22  Denver Broncos

2944

23  Dallas Cowboys

3024

24  San Diego Chargers

3179

25  Jacksonville Jaguars

3245

26  Oakland Raiders

3556

27  San Francisco 49ers

3615

28  Arizona Cardinals

3696

29  Kansas City Chiefs

4009

30  Miami Dolphins

4137

31  Seattle Seahawks

4346

32  St. Louis Rams

5657

The biggest thing for me here is this is distance teams travel every year.  Teams at the top of the list should have an advantage compared to teams throughout the league once the playoffs begin since less travel means more rest and practice.

Now what to do with all this data?

My plan is to now take this data and determine a realignment plan that gets everyone traveling close to the same distance within their division.  This should accomplish a few things in my eyes.

First is the financial benefit.  Teams would be traveling less which should lower costs.

Another financial benefit would be the closer distance teams would be to their division rivals.  I firmly believe the closer you get to your rivals the better chance you have of fans traveling to away games.  Realignment should raise ticket sales since fans would be located closer to away games in their division.

The amount of advantage or disadvantage that this proves is debatable.  I’m not trying to say this is a huge factor when Sunday comes but it does become more of a factor as the season moves forward.

Up next I’ll post my ideas for realignment and what I think it should look like.

Thanks for taking the time to read this for those who stuck with it, I know it wasn't easy.  It isn’t very spicy but you wouldn’t believe me if I told you how long I worked on it.

Also I see your point and it makes perfect sense. Too bad the league will probably never go

for a total realignment due to traditional rivalry’s. I’m sure there will be some level of realignment if teams are moved or added but not to the degree that your are talking about.

When I do the realignment post I'm going to try and maintain some key rivalries

We’ll see how many I can keep together while also balancing things out as much as possible.

Thanks for rec’s

But if you were to do it to truly save money then we would be in a division with

Jacksonville, Tampa and Atlanta. It would kill our traditional rivalry’s but I could see in like 5 to 10 years the rivalry’s between us and our instate rivals being more intense than the ones we have now. Of course I will still hate the Jets!

that's in the best case for the Dolphins

You’re probably close but I’m going to try and make it so everyone is traveling the same average distance within all the divisions. It’s still going to require travel. There are just as many teams in other directions that the Falcons could match up with.

The Dolphins Jets rivalry would be one I’d try and maintain.

Any ideas on other rivalries I should keep going?

looks like 1300 miles is about the average

so keeping Dolphins-Jets would be reasonable. Fins-Jets would be one of the farthest distances on the east coast if what I’m thinking about works. Its pretty good compared to the west coast teams. That’s going to be rough working out but I think there’s much to improve.

I was thinking about the cycle that I’d have to look at for an even observation. Give me your ideas, I’m not opposed to expanding this as well.

Go get Suh if at all possible.

by special agent wildcat on Mar 8, 2010 9:57 PM EST up reply actions

That would help strengthen your argument.

If a team’s record is better/worse during times when they travel farther/shorter distances. And as finster said, it should be over a longer time period for a better comparison (5 years would be good). That way you eliminate the one year fluke.

I used to think I had a drinking problem.
So I stopped thinking.

amazing point

the travel aspect is HUGE. take it from me, i’ve flown around the world at least 5 times, and 2 of those times were within a 2 week period. The hassle of flying, the jet lag, and the annoyance is enough to really wipe out your energy. idk how football teams do it every other week for 4 months a year. Its gotta be rough.

I haven’t traveled nearly as much as you but the time involved is key as you said. When you count it all up it must equate to teams getting more practice then others.

i always knew the seahawks travel the most by far

they are all alone up there in the north-western part of the country…in our division all the teams are up in the NE region which is very jampacked in there, with 2 of the teams being in the same state, and with us being the southern most team in the NFL, it is a clear disadvantage for us, but i think we have faired pretty well…i am torn about whether to realign…while yes there will be lower costs, more potential to go to an away divisional game (like goin to jax, tampa, and even new orleans or atlanta) for games would be great and much cheaper and easier than going to NY, Buffalo or Boston, it would probably create even more of a rivalry (the closer the teams are to each other geographically the more hatred there seems to be between the teams, just look at college rivalries)…but if you do change the system, you are going to be killing the current great rivalries that exist in the game today, and there will be a huge adjustment for everybody psychologically as well as the skematics and all the other stuff that needs to be worked out…oh and they would probably need to get more teams in the west to balance it out a bit

check out what TCP and me were saying about the rivalries

I’ll try and keep the important ones.

Look at the Rams, they have it the worst in the division. They travel 1300 more miles then the Seahawks.

Its a nice idea but,

It won’t impact our beloved Phins. If the NFL wanted to change our division then they would have kept Indianapolis in the AFC East and put us in the AFC South (where we would have been coasting to division titles every year like the Colts have basically done). You look at the old divisions and what rivalries existed and it was obvious that the southernmost AFC East team belongs in the South when you have 4 other teams in the northern half of the country.

But making a division with the Texans, Titans, Jaguars, and Dolphins would have been a marketing disaster in that the Dolphins had been rivals of the Bills, Patriots, and Jets since their inception. Historically, it just made sense to make a new division comprised of two teams that hadn’t existed for a decade, a revamped franchise (Titans), and the odd man out from another division (Colts being the only obvious choice)

NY Jets = NFL's Chicago Cubs

by TheFinReaper on Mar 9, 2010 9:16 AM EST reply actions

That would be the best case for the Fins

Won’t be the case when I post the realignment. If you read the comments above we discussed this last night and basically came to the idea that some rivalries could be kept. Just having some fun but those numbers don’t lie, there’s plenty of room for improvement.

Even if I keep the Fins, Pats and jets together add a team closer to Miami it should help a ton. Keep an open mind until you see the post I do mapping it out and explaining the advantages.

I think you’ll be surprised how many rivalries can be maintained as well as promoted.

I'm agreeing with you that some rivalries will be kept

I’m wishing we were given a fluff division for the majority of the last decade. I look forward to your realignment and already want to see who we’d get rid of.

this was really neat

as much as i love the AFC East competition i believe that if it was Miami, Tampa, Jax, and Atlanta (Southeast Division) that in a couple years it would be a serious rivalry just like cowpunk said.

As for the others…
I’d like to see the Niners, Raiders, Chargers and Hawks- West Division
Cards, Broncos, Texans and Cowboys in the Southwest
Titans, Saints, Panthers and Cincinatti aren’t super close but would make up the East
Vikings, Pack, Bears, and Lions stay in the North
Chiefs, Rams, Colts and Steelers make the Midwest division
Pats, Jets. Cleveland and Bills in the Northeast division
Eagles, Giants Redskins and Ravens in the Coastal

this would be my proposal, curious to see how u do it saw!
rec’d btw

Laces out!

Thats exactly what I was talking about. The old rivalry's would go away but with everyone

playing games that are more regional in their division the new rivalry’s could potentially be even more heated. You see what happens with college ball. Teams leave one conference for another but it does not take long for new rivalry’s to being even as others fade away. Either way it will be necessary to realign once teams get moved around or added.

Nice work

If I may throw my 2 cents in…here’s my idea (would require some teams to move)

Southeast: Dolphins, Jaguars, Buccaneers, Falcons
Southwest: Texans, Cowboys, Saints, Bills (San Antonio)
Northeast: Patriots, Jets, Giants, Eagles
Federal: Redskins, Ravens, Steelers, Browns
North: Packers, Vikings, Bears, Lions (NFC North stands pat)
Mideast: Titans, Panthers, Bengals, Colts
Pacific: Chargers, Raiders, 49ers, Cardinals (One of these teams to Los Angeles)
Plains: Rams, Chiefs, Broncos, Seahawks (Oklahoma City)

I've tried a total of 46 combinations

and I’m still not satisfied. I’ll post the realignment stats as soon as I’m done. The first one I’m doing has the current 32 teams staying in place.

The next one I do will have a team or two relocated. That one will be easy because adding teams like LA and San Antonio drastically improves the stats in regards to teams related to the West and Southwest areas.

I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t really enjoying this project. Trying to balance out a mix of rivalries and new divisions is like trying to put a puzzle together.

by special agent wildcat on Mar 10, 2010 9:21 AM EST reply actions

But LA has proved more than once it can't support a team,

and San Antonio is too small to support a team in all likelihood, seeing as how most are already fans of some other team.

And not to make it any harder, lol, but I think its more important to find out how many hours are spent traveling, a 1000 mile flight is not much different then a 1300 mile flight.

A 150 mile bus trip can take about the same time a 1000 mile flight takes, very complicated, lol.

by uncle finster on Mar 10, 2010 11:39 AM EST up reply actions

San Antonio is the 7th largest city in the US and only behind LA as the largest city

not to contain an NFL franchise. San Antonio has been lobbying for a team for a few years now. I believe that SA can support a franchise as football is like a religion in this state. LA is a different story. There are so many other things that people are interested in the SoCal area and as you stated they have shown that they have a problem supporting a franchise. The big issue with that is the NFL insists that they need a franchise there so I believe that it will happen.

There are big problems though,

proximity to Houston, are all the Houston fans there just going to change allegiance?

There’s a bout 2 mil in San Antonio, but not much outside of it, how many of them watch football, and then how many are set in who they root for, be it Houston or Dallas or Phoenix or where ever, is that enough to keep a team going or will they in turn have to sell in a couple years.

Other cities like LA, Miami, Jacksonville, Tampa, Philly, Boston and NY, and most NFL cities really, have a much larger area to draw from, once out side these cities there are sprawling suburbs that have more people then the cities, not so in San Antonio.

Small market teams are hard to set, which is why its rare that a small market area gets a team, thats why all the small market teams have been there for a long time.

There is a lot of doubt in NFL circles that SA can support a team, personally I don’t see how they can, you need new fans, and if your a real fan of a team you just can’t change, so where are all the new fans coming from, the team will be gone by the time everyones kids grow up, lol.

by uncle finster on Mar 10, 2010 2:17 PM EST up reply actions

Well as far as proximity to Houston is concerned I think 200 miles apart is not really

that close. As far as the metro area of SA there is Austin that is a 45 min drive away and the entire area in between the two which are booming and growing. There are far more than 2 million people in say an hour driving radius of the city and growing as fast if not faster than any area in the country. I follow home starts because of the business that I am in. The central Texas area (San Antonio/Austin and areas in between) are at present leading the country with no end in site.

And it's not like Houston fans are especially invested in their team

They’ve only had a single winning season in their entire history.

Also have to look at it with Jax moving to LA and Buffalo moving to Toronto

Now if they moved Seattle to Vegas and Denver to Salt Lake City, AFC West would make more sense!
