Pro Football Talk Dolphins Page and Free Agency Remarks
I wanted to get this out. Hopefully we can start a campaign that could bring in alot of traffic. On PFT, the Dolphins page lists community sites and local news... were not on there. The reason I mentioned news is because the SunSentinel is on there. Does the BOB Awards ring a bell? Cause we won that for sports. And now we watch our competitors bring in the views. So what does it look like now? FinHeaven & Co, Miami Dolphins End Zone Forum, Phinatics, PhinFever, Phins, Phinzmania, and The Phins. Don't believe me? Look for yourself. http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/category/teams/afc/miami-dolphins/
What can we do? I have no idea. But, if this can get Matty's attention. I'm sure he can come up with something.
And now to my free agency and draft comments. If you even care...
Heres my comments: (No order)
1. Joey Porter is gone. I don't wanna see his name, hear about him, see him, or hear his own loudmouth, obnoxious words ever again.
2. Mike Nolan is stepping up and steering us to a defense that can make Brady, Sanchez, and Harvard Boy cry. (And make Billichick break out the camera)
3. Karlos Dansby is a nice pickup. Nothing much to say here. All of it has been said in the last 50 fan posts.
4. Ryan Clark. Alot of people doubt how good he is because he played with Polamalu. Now here is where those people get a slap in the face. Polamalu was out for the season. Did he step up? Yes, HE had a good year. But the Steelers ended up falling apart. Which isnt his fault, you can't single out one person on a TEAM for a horrible season.
5. The Draft. The big question since the beggining of the season is... do we need a WR? Personally, no. Between Davone Bess, Brian Hartline, and Ted "Beachball Hands" Ginn (Who makes a spectacular play once in a while which usually comes back because of a holding penalty), Ronnie Brown, and Anthony Fasano... we can get it together 10 yards at a time. The defense, even though we have already made major improvements in the past few days, still needs to worry. Cause your defense can never be perfect.
Extra:
6. Go get your 50% LT authentic jerseys at Champs. (While supplies last)
7. Ferguson, your an idiot. You could of had a great year, but now you might be traded to a horrible team only to sit out 8 games so you can think about how you can contact your steroid dealer for next season.
8. CP10 is back. I consider it a good thing. Cause if Henne gets injured. I rely on CP not Tyler "Look at me, I threw a touchdown, maybe I should pop a few more up hoping its not a pick" Thigpen or Pat "I can only run the Wildcat" White.

How are we going to trade Ferguson?
You cant trade players that are URFA’s and even if he was under contract no ones giving you anything for him now.

IIRC Tomlin had to make him sit the Denver game
and any player who honestly has to think about sitting out because he risks death is stupid and I want his stupid ass on my team because THAT is one more badass!

I like the guy a lot....
But I read when he played in Denver, they had to remove his spleen and his gall bladder…. True we probably won’t play in mile-high for a while … but its a little scary to think about someone with those kind of health problems playing for us…. Also he hits hard… but he is laying there most of the time along with the guy he hits…. I was scared when Pat White got leveled last year….I think he could be a good influence on our young guys though.and hopefully bring Chris Clemens up to speed… It also sounds like he is only interested in Miami. I guess I will defer to the trifecta to make that decision…
Lay off Ferg
First off you could give him the benefit of the doubt that he wasn’t aware of what he took. The man is huge and ingests more in a day than most of us in a week so just keep an open mind.
If you really want to assume he took something on purpose then keep this in mind. If he was trying to get back on the field he risked the reputation of his career because we were so thin at NT. Not an excuse to cheat but in the case he knew it then he was doing it to help the team because of the circumstances. If they had addressed the issue last year then maybe he wouldn’t have felt the need to do IF he knew he was doing it.
Another idea that doesn’t make sense to me since he didn’t announce his retirement after the season is that he was preparing for life after football. A guy like Ferg does a ton of damage to his body and depending on what he was taking he may have been trying to heal for a post-football life. Maybe he was keeping his options open but planned on retiring.
It’s been a long time for the guy to get in trouble like this. It was in the beginning of his career that it first happened so I’m not going to judge someone based on something that happen 10 years ago.
I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt until he admits to it. No harm in assuming the best in someone.

roids are banned
yes, its better for him. but that isnt an exception to the policy that is not only in the nfl, but all other major league sports

I'm a bit surprised at the Ferg comment...
unlike baseball which has made at least token attempts to rid the sport of PED’s, the NFL has almost entirely swept the issue under the rug.
Invariably the NFL powers at be, will let the occasional positive test come up but it always ends up being framed as a ‘rogue’ individual rather than the systematic & endemic thing that is in the sport.
And I’m going to laugh if someone says baseball players benefit more from PED’s than NFL players or that baseball players are more likely to cheat or have more pressure to win.
The difference is in how the league has approached it. The masses have definitely noticed how much bigger baseball players have gotten. 25 years ago, few looked like McGwire or Sammy Sosa or A-Rod. Yet the same is true of football players who have gotten bigger and faster all the same but somehow, the masses have swallowed it hook, line, and sinker that it is simply better conditioning and training.
None of this is to defend Ferg, but it seems questionable to scapegoat him for what’s a much bigger problem in the league. The NFL is about business and acting as though PED’s don’t exist is good for business.
when he took the roids
he knew what he was doing. breaking the policy. but he did it anyways. and he obviously didnt learn from the past cuz he was busted in ’99.
"The superior man blames himself. The inferior man blames others." -Don Shula
Your certainly on to something as far as the hypocrisy of the whole drug testing system
in the NFL.
The league is not going to appear to care about the issue anymore than they do at this point until there is some level of outcry or backlash from the public thus threatening the bottom line, aka the profits of the league. Like most things it all comes down to the mighty dollar.
Right or wrong the public looks at NFL players much differently than the do MLB players. For one its the fact that the NFL game is physically so much more demanding on a human body and playing to even your mid thirty’s is a feat in it self. Its not shocking to see a MLB player hit 40 and still be able to contribute. It becomes easier for many to accept this sort of behavior from guys that risk life and limb every week vs baseball were serious injury is much more rare.
Second is the whole baseball purest contingent that for whatever reason does not seem to exist in football. Look at a player like Shawne Merriman who gets himself suspended for steroids and then comes back a few weeks later to cheers and no one seems to care. In baseball if you go out and break the home run record of Roger Maris and then its discovered that you “cheated” by being on steroids then you are forever vilified. You will never hear people calling Merriman a cheater or asking to have an asterisk by his number of sacks in the record books.
I like you realize that there is no excuse for the discrepancy between the two schools of thought. Unfortunately like many wrongs in this world until the chorus of people that are disturbed enough by the problem reaches a level to where the league can no longer ignore it nothing will change.

Yeap
totally different mentality and I wonder why because plenty of die hard baseball fans also are pretty serious football fanatics.
I think it comes down the the simple fact of baseball having such a long rich history
vs the NFL. Sure the NFL has been around a lot time too but was not see the same way on a national level until it caught and passed baseball in the last 40 or so years. Baseball is also a much more stats driven sport IMO.

What puts me off about baseball and basketball
is that you can throw a shitload of games, and it wont make a difference, whereas every game is essential in football

Understand the facts on PODs before you call them Steroids
What Ferg took fell under an umbrella of different PODs.

“Performance enhancing drugs are used by athletes in an attempt to improve strength, endurance, quickness and resilience to injury. While some of these drugs are approved for other purposes, or are synthetic forms of naturally-occurring substances in the body, they may still cause harmful and serious side effects.
Anabolic and Androgenic Agents
Anabolic agents are those that promote the growth of muscle, while androgenic agents are those that promote the development of male characteristics such as a deep voice and facial hair. Testosterone is an anabolic-androgenic steroid found naturally in the body that may also be taken by some to boost athletic performance, according to the Mayo Clinic. Other anabolic-androgenic drugs that can be taken orally, injected or applied topically include methyltestosterone, oxandrolone and oxymetholone. The Mayo Clinic advises that a particularly dangerous group of “designer” performance enhancing drugs that have received no safety testing include tetrahydrogestrinone, desoxymethyltestosterone and norbolethone.
According to the World Anti-Doping Agency, other anabolic agents include tibolone, zeranol, selective androgen receptor modulators, zilpaterol and clenbuterol.
Hormones and Hormone Antagonists
A number of synthetic hormones may be used in an attempt to increase physical strength or stamina. Erythropoiesis-stimulating agents are drugs that stimulate the production of red blood cells in the body. They are similar in structure and function to the protein erythropoietin that naturally occurs in the body and facilitates red blood cell production. These drugs include synthetic erythropoietin, or EPO, darbepoetin, or dEPO, methoxy polyethylene glycol-epoetin beta and hematide.
Among males, chorionic gonadotrophin, luteinizing hormone and corticotrophins—hormones that increase production of male sex hormones and other hormones that affect the balance of electrolytes in the body—are also performance enhancing hormones. Certain insulins and growth hormones may also be used to influence athletic performance. These include insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1), growth hormone (GH), platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), mechano growth factors (MGFs), fibroblast growth factors (FGFs), hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) and vascular-endothelial growth factor (VEGF), according to the World Anti-Doping Agency. In a process sometimes referred to as “blood spinning,” some people may also inject specially-prepared platelet-rich plasma preparations high in growth hormone into the muscle to shorten healing time from injuries.
Hormone antagonists are drugs that block the normal functioning of certain hormones in the body. Aromatase inhibitors such as aminoglutethimide, androstatrienedione, anastrozole, exemestane, letrozole, formestane, testolactone and 4-androstene-3,6,17 trione (6-oxo) work by stopping the production of estrogen in the body. Selective estrogen receptor modulators like raloxifene, toremifene and tamoxifen and anti-estrogenic drugs such as cyclofenil, fulvestrant and clomiphene also block the effects of estrogen in specific body locations. Myostatin inhibitors are also considered to be performance-enhancing drugs, blocking the effects of hormones responsible for regulating muscle mass.
Diuretics and Masking Agents
Diuretics alter the balance of naturally-occurring minerals such as sodium and potassium in the body, flushing the body of excess water. This can lead to weight loss and can also dilute the urine and mask the effects of other illicit drug use. According to the World Anti-Doping Agency, diuretics include furosemide, amiloride, triamterene, spironolactone, canrenone, indapamide, bumetanide, acetazolamide, chlorthalidone, etacrynic acid, metolazone, and thiazides such as hydrochlorothiazide, bendroflumethiazide and chlorothiazide. Other masking agents sometimes used include probenecid and intravenous albumin, mannitol, dextran or hydroxyethl starch.
Creatine
Creatine is a nutritional supplement available over-the-counter in powder or pill form. According to the Mayo Clinic, there is some evidence that creatine may help to delay muscle exhaustion and improve short bursts of muscular power; however, there is no data to suggest it improves aerobic or muscular endurance."

So ask yourself if it’s possible that Ferg took something that happened to have some Creatine in it. Maybe he did and now he has to deal with people like yourself that should be appreciating the fact that he’s busting his ass to come back.
Sometimes people make mistakes. Sometimes they ingest something by accident or just due to being too trusting. Plenty of people push stuff off on these guys and maybe he mistook something for being on the list on things he can take.
Who knows. Just stop assuming it’s a steroid at the least.

A couple things SAW....
a) He’s in the NFL, he was well aware of the drug policy, and the onus is on him to make sure he’s not ingesting/smoking/shooting anything that will cause him to fail said exam. The NFL has a procedure in place that allows players to submit products PRIOR to being taken, and they test and make sure the substance doesn’t contain any banned ingredients. So on this alone, Ferg is negligent, irresponsible, and thus guilty.
b) This isn’t a first time offense. This is his 2nd offense. So no matter what he took, he knew about a) above and he should have been even MORE cognizant of what he put into his body. He was also tested positive for Marijuana at the Combine prior to being drafted…..so its not like he doesn’t have a history.
c) I may or may not have been a steroid, who knows. I would argue that if it was a steroid, he didn’t take it to make himself bigger, but hoped to help himself heal faster….. but even if he had good intentions, either way he tried to “get away” with something….that is, if it was indeed a steroid.
If this post contains no substance, just assume that my answer is Brandon Marshall. Pay the 1st and 3rd, get the proven guy, and don't worry about that position for the next decade.
It should also be noted that the NFL gives each team, player and the union a complete list
of every product that is approved and banned. From what I have read this list is very comprehensive as the league is in a constant process of testing just about ever new product that hits the market. Could one slip through? Sure, but any player that would not used a product that is pre-approved is taking his own career in his hands.

it's on him completely
But that doesn’t change the fact that it could have been taken by accident. I’m not making a case for him being guilty or innocent, I’m just giving the flip side to assuming he did something on purpose.
I just didn’t like how killed Ferg in the post when there are plenty of things we might not know about.
I not giving him excuses, I’m just giving reasons why you might not want to tear him apart.

I'm certainly not tearing him apart. He made a mistake but its not like he raped or killed someone.
It just sucks because hes a lot less of an option for us now because he did not do his homework if that is in fact the case. I guess if we have someone that gets hurt half way through the season he would be an option but you have to just move on otherwise at this point.

okay...
a. I never said he wasn’t guilty.
b. The history you refer to has a 12 year window between offenses.
c. Your incorrect. Either way he didn’t try to get away with something. What you mean is on one side he meant to take it and the other side he didn’t. Those are the only two options.
All I’m doing here is giving a person the benefit of the doubt as opposed to sentencing him without information. Ying and Yang.
