Safety Ryan Clark arrives in Miami for free agency visit

We've been wondering since Friday what the Dolphins planned to do about their hole at safety. Tonight we're hearing of a potential solution. The Palm Beach Post and Miami Herald are reporting that Steelers' free agent safety Ryan Clark has arrived in Miami for an official visit scheduled tomorrow.

Clark arrived today and Jeff Darlington was there to greet the safety. Darlington tweets that "without question" Clark hopes to make Miami his one and only visit as a free agent. Clark said of this visit:

"There were a lot of good offers and a lot of good fits. But this seems like a good spot. So I’m praying it goes well."

So what do you think? Would Clark be a good fit in Miami?

Hey bro,

Personally i don’t care what you have to say about what i post…that’s your opinion, and you are entitled to it. I am saying that i posted it already, and when i did, i got hammered from people saying it won’t happen. All i’m saying is i said this would happen on Satureday, because i like him as a player. I don’t think i am the next Schefter, nor do i care to be. This site is all about people reporting, and posting Dolphins’s news, so that WE the FANS can get the latest up to the minute info-the REASON THIS SITE WAS VOTED NUMBER ONE, was because of fans like us. If you don’t like to post, don’t read it-That simple. No one claims to know more than the other about their team, however, there are hundreds of posts here every off-season, and thousands of mock drafts that go on, so where have you been? Do you shit on every mock draft posted by someone? Because to me, it seems as though you think you know more than the rest of us, or think you are above people, with your smart-ass comment. I will continue to post what i please. You on the other hand, can either read it or not, your choice. YOUR WELCOME

Clark probably had the worst season of his career last year with Troy out. Don’t get me wrong, I like Clark he was a great compliment to Troy. However, I do realize that Troy made Clark great when he was just good.

I agree he would be an insurance policy but I think that his production in Pittsburgh was helped in large part by playing next to Troy Polamalu. I’d rather play Clemons or a another rookie and take a pass on this free agent.

I'm not too big on Clack..

Pittsburgh is letting him walk because they want somebody better than Clark playing alongside Troy, so I’m not sure if he’s an upgrade to Wilson. I’d rather draft one, have the rook compete with Clemons, and start a young secondary around Bell, but I can’t really complain about bringing in a veteran from a good organization that has experience in our defensive system.

I actually believe the Steelers wanted Clark back

And I would like to believe Clark when he said he wanted to play next to Troy. However, I believe Clark’s agent inflated his ego and made Clark believe he was the best FS out there. Therefore, Clark was looking to be paid more than he is worth or we were willing to throw at him. I believe that at a more affordable amount, the Steelers would have been glad to keep him.

Could be a valid point

The Steelers have a history of letting good defenders go vs overpaying them because they feel that they have someone in developement that can step in a fill his role. Take a look at the LBs that the Steelers let go over the last 15 years…..and their defense never seemed to miss a beat!

while they do have potential

the stats from last year say they were below average(smith) or very poor (davis) cover guys… so yes they do show potential but the numbers say neither was even an average NFL CB.

by W NY Fins Fan on Mar 7, 2010 11:07 PM EST up reply actions

Smith was below average?

Stats, Inc. had Smith allowing only 35 receptions on 73 targets. That burn % of 47.9% was 16th best in the entire NFL. Not bad for a rookie who has only been playing the position for 3 years.

by Matty I on Mar 7, 2010 11:19 PM EST up reply actions

memory might be going

maybe it was over that last 8, but I’ll trust your number… before we mention that he was poor in run support and it’s hard to judge him because teams didn’t throw his way because it was very easy to throw on davis.

ok - don't get old - or at least on the internet

http://espn.go.com/blog/afceast/post/_/id/9022/dolphins-rookie-cbs-need-offseason-aloe

wrong stat line – the 2 of them gave up more yardage per completion than just about anyone else….

but once again was his target rate so low because teams found it so easy to throw at davis or because smith was good?

which brings me back to the my earlier point (which is likely moot now that clark went back to pitt – thank goodness)

that the metric the triad uses for DB’s doesn’t seem to be working, or at least hasn’t yet.

i agree that the Triad has had some problems with a couple of DBs

but i think part of the problem (aside from being rookies) last year on D was the D Coord.

I fully expect to see these kids take a major step forward this year.

interesting

no one seem to take issue with the DC the year before… although i’m sure i’m not the only one who took umbrage with the frequent single coverage scheme’s on some of the best WR in the business….

but i certainly understand you opinion or hope that it wasn’t the players but the scheme… i’m just a little less certain when it comes to the DBs… since it’s starting to look like more of a history of poor PP choices then coaching.

Davis very poor? Come on! That's a little harsh.

The stats may indeed tell a story but common sense has to tell you another story. Davis was picked on quite a bit for whatever reason an he gave up some plays but he also made some very big plays like that int that he pulled out of Randy Moss’ ass.(sorry lol) But, the bottom line is he went against the absolute top WR’s in the game every week. Also, don’t forget that push-off by T.O. Davis wasn’t great but I thought he did ok. He went through his growing pains and I think he’ll be a badazz from now on.

matty or one of the other stat guys

can pull the number – but i’m pretty sure he ranked in the bottom FIVE for all CB’s for completion percentage with more then 25 or 40 attempts against… it was a bad number…

but you are correct… he does have some skills and shows potential… I LOVED him as a run stuffer and tackler.. and he did get matched up one on one alot against elite WR’s… but all that doesn’t change the fact that last season he wasn’t a very good cover CB… now we all hope he lives up to his potential, but we also hope t ginn & J allen lives up to his potential… it’s getting from the potential to be great to being great that is the hard step.

The Future is now, stop the bandwagon and lets get the Henne train rollin, as we all hope that the 14th dwarf is the real prince charming.

I'm a finance guy I love stats and numbers..

However, they went after Davis overwhelmingly every week. We’re talking all not some but all of the best WR tandems AND the 2 Superbowl teams with Peyton Manning and Drew Brees. The freakig MVP and Superbowl MVP! How many of the average CB’s would do any better than Davis did. Stats always tell a story but interpreting the real story is key. Davis was not that bad. I think is was an above average CB last year, not great just better that most would do under the circumstances.

I watched all the games

so I am less concerned about stats. What I saw was a more well rounded, more complete CB than most rookies – including Smith. Davis was very quick to come up and play the quick screens and also very quick to turn his hips and get downfield with a WR. He played the ball well and he was physical with the receivers. He made mistakes from being overly aggressive early in the year that I did not see him continually make throughout the season. Watching him in the Pats game cover Moss was an example of how well he can shut down a top WR (before I hear anyone say that was not a nice performance, 2 catches for 66 yds is pretty solid for a rookie covering Randy Moss).

And this is just talking about is man coverage, and not even taking into account his run support.

Smith had a very narrow set of responsibilities assigned to help him adjust to the NFL, but from everything I saw of Davis, the coaching staff treated him like a polished NFL player – moving him around, giving him bump and run, prevent, and zone assignments. Davis was very good for a rookie, and looked capable of handling any assignment. He never seemed to lose confidence, but learned from his mistakes. The only knock I see on him is lack of NFL experience.

for the most part i agree

but was suprised to fin out that davis rated 54th in the league for dbs last year in terms of solo tackle efficiency…http://www.profootballfocus.com/articles.php?tab=articles&arc=&id=132

so I DO like davis and was impressed with his play last year, but that said he has a lot of room for improvement before he even reaches the ‘good’ stage… but he does have the potential…

but with that in mind – how do you feel about the triad’s choices for DB’s … I’d have to grade it in the D range so far?

The Future is now, stop the bandwagon and lets get the Henne train rollin, as we all hope that the 14th dwarf is the real prince charming.

by W NY Fins Fan on Mar 9, 2010 8:21 PM EST up reply actions

I just sorta address this above, but

yeah, the Triad’s choice with a few DBs so far have been a little weak. ButI would draw a distinction between trying to get guys on the cheap in FA (Green, Wilson, and what was that Safety from Dallas?), and drafting with high draft picks to the position. They have a poor track record, in general in FA, but a pretty solid record in the draft. i think these two will play much better with Nolan running the show, and a 2nd year in the NFL.

by LeftCoastFinFan on Mar 9, 2010 8:52 PM EST up reply actions

so do we grade the NFL on a curve now?

last time i checked … the any team that wants to win a championship is going to have to play and beat teams with the best players (and most likely the MVP’s) and those MVP QB’s are going to find the weak points and continue to abuse teams that can’t correct… so mssrs davis and smith better improve if the dolphins hope to win a championship… cause wayne, moss, manning, brady, and breese etc aren’t going away anytime soon.

Get your stats right brother

Smith was thrown at 67 times and 38 were completed (56.7%) which ranked him about 36th of 107 CBs

David wasn’t as good, being thrown at 76 times and allowing 48 completions (63.2%) which was ranked 65th out of 107

Those are very respectable numbers for a team going with 2 rookies starting at CB. They are only going to get better next year.

by Vanman_FishFan13 on Mar 8, 2010 3:47 PM EST up reply actions

Well if you go to profootballfocus.com

Davis was graded at 28th (out of 107) and Smith was graded at 34. I can live with those rankings for two rookie CBs with very poor help at the safety position. Granted grading depends on what you are looking at. They had very bad scores in regards to QB ranking when thrown at, but that isn’t the necessarily the best grading criteria which is why I like profootballfocus.com over most grading sites. Davis and Smith gave up too many big plays but their down to down play was very good for the most part. I expect rookie CBs to get burned in their first year but they were always competing against some beastly (skills not necessarily size) WRs that we faced (Moss, Johnson, Welker, Smith, TO, Wayne, White, Edwards, etc). I really expect much better results next year from both of our CBs, especially if we get an upgrade at the FS position!

by Vanman_FishFan13 on Mar 8, 2010 3:40 PM EST up reply actions

I think that's a little strong considering the only real failure was Gibril

Davis and Smith both worked out, as they both appear to be very promising young CB’s. Bell was re-signed, and he ended up as a pro bowler (albeit thanks to a few dropouts). Clemons was a 5th rounder, and has stuck. He’s a good special teamer, and could eventually become a starter at FS. I see more hits than failures. Eric Green IMO was insurance in case we didn’t get Vontae and/or Sean in the draft.

And Ryan Clark was one of the better defenders against the pass

He only allowed a 38.5% completion rate (10 completeions out of 26 passes thrown against him) which was the 5th best out of all safeties….especially when factoring in number of snaps played. The only safety higher than him with comparable number of snaps was Sharper for the Saints. Sharper allowed 13 out of 37 passes to be completed (35.1%) Oh and Clark only gave up 15 YAC the whole year.

So Clark should definitely be a huge improvement over Wilson’s 58.1 completion % (18 completions in 31 passes) with 99 YAC.

Clark had 3 INTs vs 0 for Wilson

how quickly you forget, i guess

skipping the roster fillers (barbers or billingsley), who one frankly can’t expect much from, they did spend good money on chris crocker and eric green neither who is/was hmmm good? not to mention the 4 year deal to lehan and the donation to keith davis…

And then lets look at the rooks… Davis, who i do like and think has potential was one of the worst cover corners in the league last year by % of passes defended and Smith was average… and i’m still not sold on smith yet, since i’m sure people avoided him because, well it was so easy to throw on davis…

then they let goodman and hill walk, and each has a much better season than ANY player on the dolphins secondary (and outside of starks maybe the defense)
and that is before we even get to discussing the players they let go to other teams while bringing in an eric green and chris crocker.

So no i don’t think i’m being harsh on them in this area… they have earned the right to be questioned about decisions about the secondary… because honestly they haven’t brought in anyone yet who has performed… now the hope is davis and smith develop into great CB’s but they are a long ways away still.

a lot of people read the fish wraps and think somehow that athletic potential makes a guy a good CB, well davis has potential and to his credit is one heck of a run stopper… but he was TERRIBLE in coverage last year (IIRC bottom five for completion percentage) and as a result i’m not sure there is a grade on smith (who look poor himself at the end of the year)

and somehow the tuna crew somehow gest a pass in some of the POOR choices that they have made in this area of the team…

Dude get your stats straight

Don’t go quoting how bad someone was unless you can give me the numbers! I gave you the numbers as well as the website for you to verify. And I can tell you as someone that watches each game 3 times/minimum, their numbers are almost dead on the same as mine (granted I don’t know how they grade with their number values but when calculating completed passes, pass defended, thrown at, completion %, we were within one in each catagory)

So please research before you start throwing numbers out. I have stated that they were near the bottom of the league in QB rating against….but not in the thrown at vs completion %. And besides, are you sure that the catagory you want to use is “passes defended”? That isn’t an actual stat. There is a stat called “passes deflected” but I don’t think you want to quote that stat either. Sean Smith was ranked 16th out of 107 CB in “passes deflected” with 10 while Vontae Davis was ranked 28th out of 107 CB with 8 “passes deflected”.

So once again, what grading system are you using?

by Vanman_FishFan13 on Mar 8, 2010 4:05 PM EST up reply actions

well i'll give you the espm

link for the Profootballfocus stuff.. but davis and smith weren’t good and looking at it overall they might be considered poor…

http://espn.go.com/blog/afceast/post/_/id/9022/dolphins-rookie-cbs-need-offseason-aloe

anyways – the most daming of numbers is the yardage that they do give up…

but once again – even if you think davis and smith can be good DB’s (which I believe is possible) the point i’m making is the triad has made 5 significant investments in DB’s before we get to wilson’s replacement…. and not one of them has been average… and the FA’s have been awful at best…

does Ireland need to so a self scout on his process or have they just had some bad luck with Wilson, Green, Crocker, Davis, Billingsley, etc???

Good articles

Though their sources were arguably innaccurate as well

Using the criteria that they stated…..Shawn Springs (New England) was the worst with a 66.0 % Completion rate (33 out of 50 passes) as well as Jonathan Wilhite (also New England) had a 65.7% Completion rate (44 out of 67 passes). That would rank Davis 3rd worse in that catagory (which by the way doesn’t fully identify the skill set of the CB). That isn’t a bad mark for a rookie on a team with two rookie CBs. I have to say that I trust profootball focus’ numbers more than ESPNs. And we all know that ESPN has a bias to the Patriots and Jets anyways. By the way, profootballfocus had Smith’s numbers worse than ESPN did 56.7% (38 out of 67 passes) vice 49.7% (35 out of 73 passes).

The missed tackles numbers were correct, but I would argue again that statistic isn’t the defining measurement of skills at the CB position. How many missed tackles do you think Dion Sanders had?

We all know that Davis and Smith gave up too many TDs and too many yards (explaining their ranking near the bottom in both catagories). But keep in mind, some of that is to be expected from rookies and some of it is a product of a lot of single coverage resulting from the coverage the defense was running. A good CB playing mostly single coverage will always have worse numbers than a good CB playing in zones or getting support from double coverage. QBs always look for single coverage and shy away from double.

If you really watched the games you would see that Davis and Smith had a lot of good plays, where they reacted quickly and correctly and had positive effects on the play. Over time what you hope is that they learn from their mistakes and the number of positive plays greatly outnumbers the negative ones.

No one is debating that they don’t have a lot of room for improvement. They do. But what other team started two rookie CBs against arguably the toughest schedule matchup (based on opposition WRs) besides Miami for virtually the whole season? None.

Goodman was ranked 20th out of 114 CBs so he wasn’t that bad. He only gave up 2 TDs and picked off 5 passes. That doesn’t seem horrible to me.

without looking at the numbers

he was good in 06 – not so good in 07 (but iirc he played hurt) and had a under appreciated very good 08… but his size/age didn’t fit into the triad’s DB metric… so they brought in crocker in to replacehim… …. and to that i say child please…

but agree with you on this point.

Clark is not a ball hawk

He is a big hit Safety. He often misses possible picks because he is looking to hit the receiver. For that reason, he is rarely out of position, but he may miss a tackle because he is looking to put too much power into it and may get side-stepped.

Sign him

Although he does not have a lot of interceptions, imagine how receivers will feel when he is in the area. He has plenty of speed and he packs a wallop. Coach Nolan will get this guy to be an excellent contributor in our secondary. It gives us another veteran leader in the backfield and that is what young corners. Besides the corners being inexperienced, I believe that they took a lot of unnecessary risks by going for balls that they had no chance of intercepting because they had no confidence that Wilson was going to make the tackle. That will no longer be the case.

I don't agree with this
Besides the corners being inexperienced, I believe that they took a lot of unnecessary risks by going for balls that they had no chance of intercepting because they had no confidence that Wilson was going to make the tackle.

that seems counter-productive. You take risks when you have confidence in your safeties, because you know if you miss they will bail you out. You play passive when you don’t think your FS can tackle because you don’t want to give up TD’s. And Wilson was 2nd on the team in tackles, so I don’t think anybody lacked confidence in that aspect of his game so much that they would change their approach because of it. Smith and Davis took risks because they were rookies and they don’t yet know when they can or cannot get to the ball and make the pick.

read a little bit on the steelers blog

majority says they will miss him, for the memories and all but everyone basically agreed he benefited with troy next to him to help in coverage. not sure if i like that sound of that. yeah he can hit, a lot better the wilson thats for sure, but how much of an upgrade is he really? besides vontae we really have no on our team that could be a “ball hawk”.

with that being said, the FO knows what is best for this team and will make the right choice. i just hope they arent panicing with the release of wilson and not being able to pick up rolle

draft micah johnson

by dhall25 on Mar 7, 2010 9:33 PM EST reply actions

i would also not mind them at least trying vontae at FS.

he obviously can cover, he has the ball hawk mentality. he is a hard hitter as well. im not sure how hard it is to transition, but rolle seemed to do a decent job. there is already chemisty between him and our secondary. so trust i dont think will be an issue.

at least try it. if it doesnt work it doesnt work. everyone is already training so there is time before the draft if we need to pick up a safety/CB or use what we already have

draft micah johnson

by dhall25 on Mar 7, 2010 9:39 PM EST up reply actions

no need to move Vontae

or Smith, or Will Allen, or anyone. They are good at CB. Leave them there.

not trying to push people buttons, but there is 0 harm in trying it out. i like where these two young CB we have right now are too. but if there is a way we can use what we have and focus more on other needs the better.

You start changing positions....

And its like our 2nd year players being rookies all over again. Its hard enough to make the switch from college to the pros, let alone learning multiple positions. Sporano answered a question about someone wondering if they though of using Sean Smith as a WR and Sporano responded by saying no way, its hard enough for them to learn one position.

I'm not sure the Wilson release and Rolle were related

I tend to think we released Wilson to make some room for Dansby’s contract (we have an internal cap so we don’t get screwed when the cap comes back). I’m not sure Clark would be a panic signing, we haven’t made panic signings, and if they target a guy, they have a good feeling about him. I agree that we need a ballhawk, and I’d rather draft a guy to compete with Clemons, but I’m not gonna be mad at signing a vet safety, because I don’t know if Clemons is ready to start, and there’s no guarantees in the draft. This would at least give us a starting caliber FS and we can go from there.

I don't think that was a panic pick

I think we had Turner targeted. I’m also sure that we didn’t just have one guy targeted with that pick. That’s poor draft strategy, because you end up reaching when your guy gets snatched. You have to have a draft board that ranks pretty much every draftable player, so you know exactly where you want to go at each pick based on your board and the players left. If we wanted Barden, there wasn’t going to be any panic when he was taken. We just moved on to the next guys on our board.

i think he is CURRENTLY an upgrade

personally i prefer otagwe but clark is a good hitter and a cheap 1-2 year deal so that clemons can prgoress might just be a good call. He’s got loads of experience and still can hit… and we got 2 young athletic corners who can flat out cover so we need 2 hard hitting safeties to take care of slot WR’s, rb’s and of course the TE. This could end up being a good move pending on what we pay for him.
