Around SBN: Bracketology 2012: Duke Finally Steps Up To The No. 1 Line

I'm not the type of person that will try to confront somebody but now I feel like it's gone too far. It's gone too far. I haven't did anything wrong to nobody.

Whoever passes up on me, it's over with. I feel like I'm going through the same situation Randy Moss did. That man had issues and teams were passing up on him, and when he got on that field, he killed them. He murdered them. Look at him today: One of the best players in the NFL.

-WR Dez Bryant.

I'll admit - I love that confidence. I love that he will come in with a chip on his shoulder. But will Miami be one of the team's that pass on him - and Dez eventually "kills?"

Nice!

I like WR’s with that kind of attitude. Now, could it move into the “Give Me the Damn Ball” attitude, yes. But, it’s a good thing to have, initially at least.

Peyton Manning told Indy, when they were trying to decide between him and Ryan Leaf, “If you don’t take me, I am going to kill you for the next 15 years.” I think he was right.

Maybe this is what Dez needs to beocme a great WR.

they play it over and over on NFL network

its a draft commercial.

There’s another one where its Brady saying that he walked in on his first day as a Pat and went to the owner and said “Hi Mr. Kraft, I’m Tom Brady, and you made one of the best decisions of your life picking me”.
While I hate him, its a cool quote

I still question whether that's just propaganda or not

Brady would have been laughed out of the room, considering how late he was drafted, and it just doesn’t seem Peyton-like. But what do I know?

He is associated with Deion Sanders....

Who is also thought to be behind Crabtree’s hold out last season, so it is very possible he doesn’t report on time.

Good article in the ESPN the Magazine from two weeks ago about Deion’s leverage within the NFL right now.

Don't stop there!
“Even if I did forget my cleats, what do that have to do with me playing football? … Y’all don’t want me to go to the NFL? It is going to happen. God blessed me to have this ability to play this game. … I’m going through the same situation Randy Moss did.” He also defended Pacman Jones. “Why down talk the man?” Bryant said of Pacman. “The man did everything right.”

you might love his confidence, but you HAVE to question his judgment… and memory.

It is something stupid to say

but think about it, football isn’t quantum physics…we aren’t paying him to have intellectual conversations. He plays the game, he out jumps defenders for balls, he scores touchdown, he makes plays. I want him…. As long as it doesn’t effect the locker room and he doesn’t bad mouth to coaches (and i highly doubt that would happen with some of the players in the locker room and with the hard -nosed coaching staff). We will regret not taking him over some stupid comments he says, who cares?

by Ham420 on Mar 31, 2010 8:50 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm not saying don't take him but.....

It I was going to give him several $million over the next 3-5 years I’d like to be confident he’s going to do his part to make sure he makes that a worthwhile investment….I’m not sure he’s demostrated that you can count on him doing that.

Somebody is going to get a hell of a player…or they may be getting a physically gifted athlete who doesn’t have the awareness and disicipline to excell (which is what – Ted Ginn – a first round pick must do to avoid being branded a bust) in the NFL

by PhrozenPhish on Mar 31, 2010 9:13 PM EDT up reply actions

I understand

but you have to remember this is still a pretty young, naive and immature kid. He hasn’t had good examples to learn from. You give him the right coaching staff, you surround him with the right people and he will mature. Hopefully some of the “wiser” players and coaches will rub off on him. I’m sure we have all said some pretty idiotic things at one point or another but people grow up and become professsionals, this kid doesn’t seem helpless, just a little lost.

by Ham420 on Mar 31, 2010 9:29 PM EDT up reply actions

And you might well be bang-on with your analysis

and some team with the right approach gets the next Michael Irvin.

But the problem Bryant presents is that kind of “reclamation” or “nurturing” is usually reserved for rounds later than One.

Bryant has too much talent to fall to where teams are more comfortable taking a chance on him.

Someone is going to gamble about $20 million on their ability to develop him into a professional athlete. – that’s going to take some nerve.

by PhrozenPhish on Mar 31, 2010 10:23 PM EDT up reply actions

I think what he does, depends on the attitude of whoever picks him

I think some validation would go a long way towards getting Bryant’s head right. He’s had a very, very crappy life thusfar, and some extra attention would do him well. I think Singletary might be one of the better coaches for Dez to end up with, seeing as Dez’s attitude problem doesn’t seem to be rooted in arrogance and conceit (ala Peezy), it just seems like he feels that nobody, from his childhood to now, has ever really wanted him.

This guy screams "baby T.O."

I mean seriously…..he may very well “kill” on the field, but just like T.O. he will “KILL” in the locker room too. He will quit playing when he feels like it….just like, who’d he compare himself to? oh yeah, Randy Moss. I dont think any of us want a cancer in the locker room much less on the field. I think it is hilarious how there are so many fans on this site that see all the WARNING signs that come with all the “talent” that is DEZ BRYANT. He sits out the combine. He shows up unprepared for his pro day much like he came to college practice and games unprepared. He gives an Allen Iverson-esque response when handed criticism for said actions.

He has pretty much looked at the world and said “I have shown you all I will show you till you Pay me. and then, you will get what I give you” And still, everyone here thinks he is a godsend. Sure, the numbers mean little. Its the act of basically sticking his middle finger up and saying “roll the dice” because I will do little to show you I deserve a selection at all, much less a first round one. And you all still scream “we gotta have the unproven baby T.O. who has said he is not willing to show he will WORK to be drafted.”

To compare, I have consistently said our best move is to move down in round 1, get an extra 3rd or maybe if we are lucky even a 2nd round pick, and draft Terrence Cody. And instantly I am met with criticism that “he let himself get to 375 so I question his work ethic” and “he’ll get fat and lazy as soon as he gets paid”. And even AFTER Mt Cody worked his tail OFF and got to 349 for his pro day, an ideal playing weight for a solid NT, those remarks were made to my suggestion. These same people have NO QUESTION regarding Dez Bryant’s work ethic and he has basically said, I will work to prove nothing to anyone!

To those of you that see DEZ BRYANT for what he is, an enigmatic cancer, I applaud you. Sure, the guy has mad talent and will probably be just as good as T.O. or Randy Moss….but he will be just as good as them both ON and OFF the field. To those of you that disagree even after reading my points and know them to be fact, well all i can say is that the TUNA himself has never drafted a WR in rd 1, and to highlight that fact….he had prior experience with T.O. in Dallas and QUIT because of him. So even IF the Tuna takes a WR in rd 1….it will not be baby T.O.

Carr was fairly solid coming out of college. People think USC puts out alot of QBs. There are currently 3 QBs from Fresno State on NFL rosters. Funny thing is people are always down on Trent Dilfer when he played in the NFL. He was recruited as a LB. LOL. The other thing is that their are two Pac 10 coaches that were QBs at Fresno State. Carr was the best that I had seen out of any of them. By the way Carr’s little brother sould have started this year as a true Freshman. D. Carr was sacked 76 times his rookie year. I think he is lucky to still be playing. I’ll put the soap box away now.

Wrong?

I’ve seen maybe 12 QBs at Fresno State. 10 of those 12 played in the NFL. I played football against a couple of them. Carr had all the tools to be a solid QB at the pro level. Plus he’s the son of a Pro Bowl NFL player. What killed David Carr is the fact that Tony Boselli an All Pro LT decide to retire instead of play for an expansion team. David Carr’s First 4 years he was sacked 200 times.

Carr had one of the best QB coaches in the league working with him in Gary Kubiak.

Carr’s problem wasn’t his physical tools or getting sacked. His problem was his understanding of a pro passing offense. He couldn’t process the coverages, make the correct reads, deliver the ball on time, and deliver it accurately.

Let's get offensive this offseason!

I don't think he would've been any good if he was sacked half that much

Maybe it scared him a little, but if he was going to be a good QB, he would’ve bounced back. Same with Harrington. If you are a good QB, you become a good QB.

Manning, rookie season – 22 sacks, 28 INT’s
Carr, rookie season – 76 sacks, 15 INT’s

GET RID OF THE BALL ROOKIE!

lol seriously though, I don’t believe he would’ve ever been a good QB, regardless of all the sacks. There’s no way to prove for or against that, just my belief.

well here's where I stand on the Jake Long pick at this point

we got lucky with Henne. If he fails, like most 2nd round QB’s do, we made a bad pick in Long. Because no matter how awesome your LT is, you can’t win in this league without a QB. Because Henne seems to be playing his way into the Franchise QB tag, it was a good pick, because you get a great LT AND a good QB in the same draft.

I don’t think too many people would feel good about that pick if we were still hunting for a franchise QB at this stage of the game.

A great LT will let a QB develop, no matter

how good of a QB “prospect” (operative term) it is, he won’t do anything if the opposing DC doesn’t have to use any blitzes to get to the QB. In fact only a few vets can do so.

wrong

if a QB stinks, it doesn’t matter how great his OL is. He’s still going to stink. Look at the Jets. Great OL, great running game, great defense, and they lost in the playoffs because their QB failed. If a QB is good, he can play his entire career behind a mediocre OL and be somewhat successful. But he can also make a mediocre OL look better because the ball comes out on time and he keeps the defense off balance. Bad QB’s can make good LT’s look terrible because they hold the ball and don’t make quick reads or hot reads vs the blitz.

You can’t develop a great QB.

So why do NFL teams even have O lines?

Some HS teams run without them, and it lets you have more “playmakers” on the field. So lets cut them and have 3 RBs, 1 TE, 2 QBs, and 5 WRs. There are reasons this doesn’t work in the NFL.

what are you talking about?

first of all, the “A-11” offense that you are referring to is now illegal at all levels of football as far as I know.

Secondly, where did I ever say OL wasn’t important? I said a Franchise QB trumps everything else on a football team as far importance goes. That doesn’t mean that you can line up a franchise QB 1 on 11 and win games, don’t be dumb.

There’s a reason some highly-rated QB’s fail, and others succeed, and it’s not as cut and dry as “this guy had better blocking.” Most of these guys are drafted high, by terrible teams, so they are all mostly in the same position. The great ones push through and have success, the failures… well… fail.

Say what???

A great OL can carry an average QB. Baltmore won a Super Bowl with Trent Dilfer…it wasn’t all Defence.

The Dolphins had an OL in the 70’s that was so good it went to three straight Super Bowls and got Bob Griese into the Hall of Fame with a 77.1 career passer rating and a 56% career completion rate.

Griese won a Super Bowl completing 8 of 11 passes…he didn’t get touched.

The other half of the equasion is the running game…you can’t run the ball without a great O line and a good running game is the key to taking the pressure off the QB…Langer, Little (who are three) and Kootch (who should be) are the reason Czonka and Griese are in Canton.

The Jets (God I hate saying anything nice about them) had the best running attack in the NFL last year. So good they overcame a 12-20 TD/Int ratio and a 63. passer rating and got within one game of the Super Bowl

They lost in the AFC Championship game not because the pretty boy failed but because Manning torched their D for the last three quarters.

Sanchez had a better than average game for him : 17/30 – 257 2 Tds and 1 Int.

They lost because even thought they didn’t give up a sack the Jets O Line failed to get the 170yds rushing they’d been averaging in the Playoffs.

Jake Long was the right pick…..he will anchor that Line for the next decade. Further, I don’t think Henne was luck…I think they knew exactly what they were getting and they were sure he’d still be there at the 57th pick.

Luck happened when the Jets cut Pennington, we got a proven starter and Henne aquired the best mentor you could hope for.

If you look at the current Dolphin roster you’ll note that 16 of the 18 players they’ve taken in the last two dratfs are still there.

So far it would appear they know exactly what they’re doing.

 Cheers

Baltimore had the best defense of all-time

you better believe that was mostly defense that won them that Super Bowl. And while Dilfer wasn’t great, he was efficient, and he didn’t stand back there and hold the ball or miss reads. He was a smart, veteran QB.

Griese only threw 11 passes because we ran the ball better than anyone. Yes that had a lot to do with the OL, but it also had a lot to do with Csonka, Morris, and Kiick. I’m not disregarding the OL, but Griese was a good QB in his own right.

Jake Long was the right pick. But if Henne isn’t a good QB, then it was the wrong pick. And getting Henne may not have been luck, but him succeeding goes well against the odds. There are 2 starting QB’s in the league that were 2nd round picks, Brees and Henne. You just don’t normally have success finding a franchise QB in round 2, so in that instance, yes we were lucky.

and btw, I never questioned what Parcells and Co. have done. I don’t expect you to suddenly change your opinion and agree with me, but a Franchise QB trumps all else in the NFL, and nothing is gonna change my mind on that. Teams like the Ravens Super Bowl squad and last year’s Jets are the exceptions. Teams like NE and Indy, that are there EVERY SINGLE YEAR because of their great QB’s, are the rule.

Not arguing that

I’m not suggesting you’re slagging the trifecta…and I agree that a franchise QB is key to a dynasty..but they’re not always found in the first round.

Manning – yes …
Elway – yes
Kelly – yes
Even Marino – yes

but what makes the 2nd round any luckier than any other?

Brady – 6th
Montana 3rd
Favre – 2nd – then traded
Moon – FA
Theismann FA

Further for every Manning there’s a Leaf
For Every Elway there’s a Blackledge.

The first round is a crap-shoot as well,,,and an expensive one.

I would take David Carr over Trent Dilfer all day long. Trent’s a great leader and both Trent and David are pretty good guys. Carr had all the tools when he left Fresno State. He was a complete QB. That was then and this is now though.

Carr might still bounce back. I doubt it though. Remember he has sat behind the lesser Manning the last couple of years. Harrington and Carr have that deer in the headlights look. You always draft a blindside protector. At Fresno State Carr had a guy by the name of Logan Mankins protecting his blindside.

Enough already! There is so much misinformation out there it is ridiculous! He had SIX pairs of shoes on hand at his workout. Was he a little out of shape? Sure, but he hasn’t been in game shape since last September! There is WAY too much emphasis being put on a guy working out in his underwear. “He doesn’t have the speed.” “His big play ability is questionable.” ENOUGH! Just watch the tape people!! That’s all the guy did is make plays! He is a stud, and as close to a guaranteed #1 WR as there could be. Nobody is without questions, even Peyton Manning was criticized coming out of UT. I am so sick of drafting WRs and “hoping” they develop into a #1. Just draft a guy who already is a #1. Either address the problem with the best option or don’t draft another one at all. Take Bryant at 12. All the great ones come with risk. Marino had serious questions about drug use when he came out. Why do you think he fell to us at 27? Henne needs a true stud, give it to him. Dez Bryant.

And with Marshall you know you are getting (IMO) the 2nd best receiver in the game. No possibility of a bust or anything. There is a reason Bryants stock is dropping, and I do not believe for a second its some covert ops to get his stock down. Its this way because he has issues. work ethic and heart are the most important things (outside of actual talent) for a receiver in the NFL and he does not seem to have either.

A lil laid back? Its not the forgetting or the English stuff for me..

Its the not taking blame for forgetting his cleats, the putting the bad workout on the fact that he forgot his cleats then saying he had 3000 pairs of cleats there. Its the showing up 2 hours late for his own “pro day” of sorts. Its the lack of ambition he shows. Its the “im the shit bitch” attitude. Its the being suspended most of last season. Its the lack of respect he has shown people in saying what he says and the attitude he says it.

Here's my one and only issue I have with this statement

he’s comparing himself to another GREAT WR. One that he has no business comparing himself to at this stage of the game. He’s made the comparison of himself to Fitzgerald, Andre Johnson, and now Moss, 3 of the top 5 in the league, and 3 of the best of this generation. I understand he thinks highly of himself, but comparing yourself to great WR’s after you didn’t put forth much effort in damn pro day doesn’t sit well with me. Maybe you should be busting your ass to prove that you are that good before actually just saying you are.

Other than that, I actually like the cockiness. Doesn’t really change how I feel overall about him, which is that he scares me to death at 12 because there’s too many negatives surrounding him.

I think Moss is a good comparison

Sorry to intrude on your discussion Dolphin fans.

Moss stops trying and gets lazy if things don’t go his way. I mean come on, what kind of #1 receiver gives up on his route while the play is still going on?(i.e. Pats vs Saints 2009) He caused an interception which as a Saints fan I was happy for. Brady didn’t throw a bad pass, Moss just stopped running his route. The man has all the talent in the world, but I would never want him on my team. Give me a 7th round choice like Colston any day over him(Moss). Or even a undrafted free agent like Lance Moore. These guys have heart and a work ethic that just doesn’t stop. BTW they always bring their cleats, unlike RB Bell who we have parted ways with. (thank you Eagles)

The English grammar is no biggie unless he can talk correctly then it shows he is lazy. But if that is the best he can talk while knowing he is under a magnifying lens then give him a break.

Anyway, good luck in the draft.
