How do 1st Rd tender offers work?

Alright, I obviously know that if they place a first round tender on, oh lets just say Brandon Marshall for example, that we have to give up a 1st rounder and an amount that the Broncos would have to match or let him walk.  However, what im not sure of is if it has to be this year's 1st round or can it be next years?  Honestly depending on Free agency and if we get Karlos Dansby or an impact player, i'd be tempted to do a 1st rounder for Brandon, but honestly only if we gave next year's 1st or signed Dansby because we have too many needs on defense to not have a 1st round pick this year.  However, if draft day comes, and the front office has decided to draft Dez Bryant, i think they should call up Josh Mcdaniels and give them their first for him because he's extremely young and proven.

Can someone help me out regarding what year's draft pick has to be given up?
