I'll admit right away, I'm not a believer in drafting Spiller with the 12th pick in this year's draft. Yet that is. I'm asking if any of you can convince me that Spiller is the best pick, for this year.
This is what I don't understand about targeting and drafting Spiller this year: We have many holes on the defensive side of the ball, and a serious need for a number one type receiver. So many so, that we may not be able to adequately fill them all this offseason. Not to be redundant, but we have serious holes at NT, FS, OLB (2), and of course the #1 WR. Why then would we want to target a position in the 2010 draft, where we actually have great depth? I have heard that we should attack that position before it becomes a need, and I can understand this view, but is it really best to attack it before we fill other more glaring needs?
The second part of the equation that I can't quite comprehend is the position that we would be bolstering if we did take Spiller, the running back position. We've heard it time and time again that this is a passing league, you have to be able to pass the ball and stop the pass to win. If this is true, why would we move to have the deepest running game in the NFL? Additionally, it seems that good running backs are becoming more and more common. In the last six years, twenty running backs have been selected in the first round of the NFL draft. Of those twenty, fifteen are either the primary back, or part of a running back tandem. My question then is this, why can't we wait until the 2011 draft and take the stud running back in that draft class? What makes Spiller so special, that we should pass on all our pressing needs and bolster our already strong running game?
This is how I see the issue. Please, help me see why you think Spiller is the best path to take come draft day, I'm not dead set in any way I want the Dolphins to attack the draft, but I would like to understand all the avenues other fans would like us to take.
