I love team Tri-Guys. I really do. Despite a few misses, overall they have done outstanding job. I am grateful they have brought their act to SoFla and returned the Fins to a respectable team again.
You will not find me bashing our FO for missing on the evaluation of players such as The Hamster... eerr sorry I meant Gerbil or Wilford, or Pat Turner, or White etc. Those misses come with the territtory. No prob I get it.
However, for such a talented group, I find some of the "no-brainer" business decisions baffling. Things that come to mind are letting go Matt Roth to to Clevland for nothing in return. Cutting then "re-cutting" Porter. The non signing and/or not even responding to the Jason Taylor "plea" to be signed this season. Those type of things do not make logical sense to me.
The latest issue is the manner in which they are handling the Smiley situation. You want to move a guy-- fine. None of us are good enough to question their decision on that. However, what possible good is it to ask Smiley to NOT report to workouts??? Plus they basically advertised to everyone that this decision has to do with his repeated injuries. I mean doesn't this just LOWER the value of your asset???? What possible sense does this make? Why go public like that? Why not let the guy work out-he is NOT a malcontent. Why tell everyone you cant count on him to stay healthy
Does it not make more sense to quietly or (even "loudly") shop him and just take the public position that you simply want to go younger and cheaper with Incognito???? I find the TRIGUY approach utterly baffling here.
Unless they were trying to use some form of leverage to get Smiley to agree to a salary reduction (which does not seem to be the case) I cannot think of one single positive aspect to handle this situation in the manner they are. Potential free agents also view the way we treat players like Smiley and JT. Originally I thought a 3rd rounder for Smiley would be no prob. The lack of care that they treat their asset has reduced that asset in half. We are lucky to a 6th round value now.
Can anyone suggest a possible theory or motive as to why they would possible handle the Smiley affair in this manner???? I love the TriGUys, but they have me stumped again. Anyone?
