Pat White to the Bills?
(From EAPN AFC EAST blog)
Bills head coach Chan Gailey said Tuesday morning at the NFL owners meetings that adding another back will be a priority in the draft along with the offensive and defensive lines and a wide receiver.
Gailey has a prototype in mind, a complement to the size and power Jackson and Lynch offer.
"There's some good running backs in the draft this year different than what we've got. So change of pace, again, might be something you could do there with a different type of player.
"The guys that are coming out now, there's a bunch of those 5-9, 185-pound or 195-pound, quick-as-a-cat water bugs that are running backs-slash-receivers that might give you a little bit of a punch on the field, maybe make a big play."
This is what Pat White does well. He is shifty and quick. We should get some value out of him while we can. Sporano has already stated that White and Thigpen have the same skill set. Thigpen is obviously the better passer/QB now, so maybe this should be explored.
What is his current value?
Trade him to the Bills along with our 1st for their 1st. (move up 3 spots)
Trade him for a 3rd or 4th rounder? Pair of 5ths?
What is the consensus?

And Tyler Thigpen is much more of a possibility than White, who hasn’t even proven he can complete a pass thusfar.

Why would we want to trade him within the division? While the PW experiment hasn’t been that successful here, why give him a chance to get better and become a threat to a rival? Add that with the fact we probably wouldn’t get back what we spent (doubtful Buffalo gives a 2nd or higher draft pick for him), this trade will not and should not happen.
Cuz he sucks?
Henne is the QB of the Miami Dolphins. Good.
Trade Brown? Are you smoking crack?

We need this pass D to STEP THE F UP and do what they get paid to do!
We dont need a 30+ receiver we need younger, Bowe or Marshall will do fine
hmmm
If we could move up 3 spots that would be huge. Then we could get berry! : )

I'll trade Thigpen to the bills to swap 1st's and add a 5th.
I love Thigpen, but he has way more value than White at the moment and that’s the only way this kind of deal would go threw.
Plus, I’m not ready to give up on Pat White. I think he struggled mostly because of the way he was used (which was terrible by the way). I’m not going to sit here and say he’s going to be the next Mike Vick, but I do believe he will make for a great back-up QB to Henne.

For one I dont know why the Bills would do this. They need a starter and White showed
nothing last season to say that he could be one.
As far as the argument about trading him in the division. I like most do not want to trade a player to a division rival but I would always be open to listen to ANY offers. If your divisional foe wants to to something stupid and overpay then you would have to consider it.

ha ha...
texas he showed he wasn’t even capable of being effective on a specialized formation for 5 plays/game. How a team that needs a starter figures that Pat White is the missing piece is beyond me…
Though I don’t discount the fact that this is Buffalo we are speaking about…
I could see them making a run after Thigpen. If we could get over value there you would have
to at least consider it even though I would be sick if Thigpen were to come back later and burn us.

Yeah
as unlikely as it is that we’d trade to a division rival, at least Thigpen has looked something like an NFL QB when he’s played and actually been a starter.
Pat White as a starting QB is more akin to elicit giggles…
That's B.S. Natalya.
Thigpen had time to develop and so will Pat White. Thigpen was a nobody from a nowhere school, threw 2 passes his rookie year. From that he had a decent sason given the opportunity. Why Can’t Pat White do that. This regime wanted him, he has all the skills, he was a 2nd round pick, and he is one of the best College qb’s in history.

How is it BS? If a team is looking for a starter is it not logical to assume that they would
look at players that show they can pull it off at the NFL level? Sure Pat White might surprise us all one day but equating what a QB did in college to what he will be in the pros is never a good idea. Look at the list. Some of the best ever in college never even started a game in the NFL and many more just sort of fizzled out. It has to be the hardest position to project from one level to the next.

What was B.S. was when she wrote "Pat White as a starting QB is more akin to elicit giggles…"
That wasn’t cool or accurrate. Also, I never “equated” what Pat White did in college to the pros. There aren’t a whole bunch of QB’s who do well in the league coming from a place like Coastal Carolina. My point is let Pat white have the time to develop and then make the judgement on the type of player that he is. My point was that Pat White has all the tools, skills and background to be sucessful to be a good QB.

he doesnt have elite arm strength, he doesnt have great accuracy, he doesnt have any poise in the pocket, he doesnt have the height to see over linemen, he comes from a spread offense(primarily shotgun) so he doesnt have the background, he doesnt have elite speed, he doesnt have an nfl build…

That's not what was said before the draft and that's not what the Triad thinks or they would not have drafted him in the 2nd.
Ireland stated that they drafted him because “he’s a great athlete.” And that they saw him as a quarterback.

Are you serious….Pat White…one of the best college QB’s in history? I suppose if one never considers anything but the statistics book then perhaps.
Not that being one of the greatest college QB’s would mean much in terms of a players NFL prospects anyway. If it did, then Danny Wuerffel would be an NFL star. Or heck, Ken Dorsey who had a better career at UM than Jim Kelly, would be an all-pro :-)
Natalya,
I’m pretty good at “logic” and that was not the point I made. I was simply giving an example of a player given time and the opportunty to prepare and improve, that showed great improvement. My point with Thigpen was that given where he came from as a 7th rounder, he was able to have success eventually. To me its illogical for those who are jumping all over a rookie QB with a limited number of game snaps.

SORRY, You are Mistaken
Tyler Thigpen THREW 6 passes in 1 game in his rookie year. He COMPLETED 2 passes.
Pat White threw 5 passes in his rookie year and had 0 (ZERO) completions.
White was a great QB for West Virginia but he wasn’t playing at the NFL level then. Pat White was envisioned to be something that he showed last year he is unlikely to be and that a Kordell (Slash) Stewart kind of guy. The difference is that Slash was 6-1, 218 which is a good height/weight for a WR, a QB, and a power RB. White is 6-0, 190 which is good for a RB but disadvantageous at WR and QB. It doesn’t mean White can’t play those positions but in the makeup of the current league he will have to work harder and be better to make up for the difference in measurables. White showed that he is not ready to be a starter and no team (EVEN OAKLAND) would consider trading anything for Pat White at this juncture because he is a project and (unlike MLB) you don’t trade for projects in the NFL when you can draft them instead for free.
And Pat White as a starter does elicit giggles because 1.) Pat White was never intended to be a starter and 2.) Please see game footage from last season.

Part of being a good QB is not leaving your WR for dead on a pass.
Remember how guilt-ridden Kurt Warner was when he led his WR (I think it was Boldin) on a high pass where a Jest player laid him out in the closing minutes of a game Arizona had long since lost in the Meadowlands? This was two seasons ago and Warner said he might retire after that game because of how wracked with guilt he was over that pass. So really your point (good though it is) only reinforces the reality that Pat White is not ready to be a starting QB since his read and recognition skills will, at best, complete a pass or two and see just as many WR sent to injured reserve.

Is this theory...
Designed for the Bills to take White as a QB or a RB? The way im reading this post is the Bills want a change of pace back. I guess I can see White as a change of pace RB, similiar to Darren Sproles. He definetely has the speed to excel as the RB and he knew what to do with the ball when he was in college. I dont see why he couldnt be a PR/KR/RB.

I aint talking about trading...
I wouldnt mind seeing him as a PR/KR/RB for the phins. He aint cutting it as a QB. Not saying he wont ever be able to but he was drafted for the wildcat. The wildcat was a gimmick offense because we could not move the ball well during the first 2 games of 2008. White does have a QB spot on the phins roster in my opinion so we might as well see how else he can contribute for us.

Superbowl teams use a gimmick offense to beat their opponents? Dont get me wrong, I love watching Ronnie getting the direct snap and shoving the balls downs our opponents throats but you cant deny why we used the wildcat. Pennington didnt have a strong arm and we had a lot of young and inexperienced players. We put our best players on the field (ie Brown and Williams) to fool offenses so that we could move the ball. Do you honestly believe White was drafted to be a reliable back up to Henne? Hes here because they wanted to experiment with a player that could excel at a part of ur offense that was used in maybe 2% of our offensive plays lasy year. He needs to find his niche as a WR or RB or return man.

They are built differently...
But Sproles is the most comparable RB to White in my opinion. Just because someone gets a good hit off on someone and knocks them out, it doesnt mean they cant play the position. What about when Ryan Clark knocked MaGahee out and he was motionless on the floor for 10 minutes before being carted off? Should the Ravens have questioned his ability to be a RB?

Clark knocked himself out too,
which is what happens on really hard helmet to helmet shots, CB I Taylor wasn’t fazed at all by the hit on P White, and that was an almost identical hit they EACH took, one guy is unfazed and the other guy is in la la land, its just like Dierdorf says right there, helmet to helmet is something a RB has to deal with, and it happens all the time.

But the difference between a RB and a QB is how they get hit.
RBs know how to position themselves better to absorb hits. QBs do not. Sproles wouldn’t have put himself into a position to take the kind of hit White put himself into. That’s why White is not, and will not be a RB.

At the time of the trade, our FO actually thought they got the better of the deal by prying an extra pick from the Pats for him. The FO actually didn’t think very highly of Welker, which is why they let him go in the first place.

You keep mentioning a poison pill, but it's really just about not overpaying.
Welker was a restricted FA, tendered with a second round offer. NE threw in the seventh round pick for two reasons. One: So they wouldn’t take the risk that we might match their offer. Two: So that they wouldn’t end up overpaying him. NE needed to keep his price low because that was the year they went on a FA bonanza. NE was simply bluffing with any mention of a poison pill, because there was no way they could afford to pay him more than we could have matched.
I used to think I had a drinking problem.
So I stopped thinking.
Its not a bluff. It was a part of the offer that they signed him to.

5 years for $18.1 Mil is hardly a poison pill.
The offer that contained the so called poison pill, is not the contract Welker eventually signed with the Pats. The whole poison pill contract theory is pure speculation by the Boston Herald anyways. We had enough cap room (Joey Porter for 5 year, $32 mil) to match anything NE would reasonably throw Welker’s way.
I used to think I had a drinking problem.
So I stopped thinking.
I was also reported by the Miami papers as well as many league insiders.
The issue was that Welker wanted to go to the Pats and could sign the offer sheet. The Pats called the Phins FO and said that they would add the poison pill but in an effort to avoid future bad blood that they wanted to make a trade. They basically had a gun to the Phins head. I do not think Miami wanted to trade him. Besides thats a totally different FO so in a lot of respects it might as well have been another team.

If Miami really didn't want to trade him.....
They would have spent the extra $500K and tendered him at the 1st round level. That would have surely soured anybodies taste for Welker. The Phins had all the leverage in this deal. They had two teams competing for Welker’s services, and knew that these teams didn’t want to get into a bidding war. So the Pats got proactive and called the Phins to offer a trade to avoid that. I guarantee you the Phins in response, called the Vikings and asked if they could offer something better. They didn’t, so the Pats got his services for a second and a seventh.
The bottom line is Welker was not going to become the player he is now, as long as he was on the Dolphins. That’s why they dealt him. I thought it was a great deal. Cause without Randy Moss, Wes Welker doesn’t catch 100+ balls per year.
I used to think I had a drinking problem.
So I stopped thinking.
I think based on his production the tender was fair and I think they
were surprised that hey garnered so much attention. Is that the FO’s mistake/stupidity? Well sure but once again that group is so long gone. Hell the owner is not even the same any longer.

Exactly
They got a second and seventh round pick for a guy who hadn’t caught more than 67 passes in a year, never had more than 700 yards receiving, and only had one receiving TD in two years.
In comparison, Arizona and Oakland got less compensation for Randy Moss and Anquan Boldin. I don’t think it was a mistake on their part, it was actually probably the smartest move they made. Sure Welker has become a 100+ catch receiver per year, but as I said above without Randy I don’t think he does the same.
I used to think I had a drinking problem.
So I stopped thinking.
I agree I just do not believe that they wanted to get rid of him.
I think those SOB’s in NE held a gun to their heads and forced a trade.

But that doesn't make sense.
All it would have cost to keep him is $500K more, and he would have been tendered at a first round tender. He was a restricted FA, we had all the leverage. There’s no way NE would have given up a first round pick for Welker.
I used to think I had a drinking problem.
So I stopped thinking.
I agree that they underestimated his value and tried to
save money but NE still had the gun to their heads by threatening the poison pill.

Your poison pill theory is irrelevant.
He was a RFA!! For $500K more they could have locked him up with a first round tender. Whatever NE was offering is irrelevant. The bottom line is if they really wanted to keep him, they would have made the first round tender, and nobody would have been willing to give up a first rounder for him.
The FO didn’t undervalue him. A 67 catch receiver for less than 700 yards isn’t even worth a second round pick. They chose to tender him at a level they thought was slightly higher than he was actually worth (3rd rounder). Yes, that does mean they would have liked to have kept him, but it also meant they viewed a 2nd round pick as more valuable.
I used to think I had a drinking problem.
So I stopped thinking.
Its not irrelevant. Sure they could have tendered
him higher but once they did not then the threat was very real. How is something that happened irrelevant?

Because there was no threat.
They were more than happy to take a second round pick for him, cause they valued him as being worth less. So there was never any need for a poison pill. I think you overestimate how much they valued Welker.
I used to think I had a drinking problem.
So I stopped thinking.
Well the insiders for both sides claim there
was and as we all know in the NFL where theres smoke there is often times fire.

And I'm sure I could find inside sources to say the opposite.
Inside sources are found to validify the side of the story that particular writer is trying to sell. Just as I’m sure I can find an insider who could tell me the Dolphins will or won’t draft CJ Spiller in the first round.
I used to think I had a drinking problem.
So I stopped thinking.
Thats a stretch to make a point but ok bro.

Is there something im forgetting?
Or do we not also have 2 power backs, with the need of a complementary scat back?
Keep Pat, hes a proven winner and all it takes is some time in the system before he cashes in, look at our rivals and what Brian Schottenheimer was able to do with Brad Smith this year and Pat White has twice the talent that Brad Smith has
lmao @ pat white playing rb

I'm really glad most of you guys don't run this team
you don’t give up on a guy after his rookie year. Every rookie outside of the true SUPERSTARS struggle as a rookie. Especially QB’s that come from gimmick college offenses. Why we expected him to make a difference as a rookie is beyond me. The fact that the FO liked him enough to not only put him on the field in some key situations, but to play him full-time in the final game when Henne was hurt tells me they feel like he brings something to the table. If he sucked, do you think he sees the field at all? It’s getting ridiculous that 2 years ago, we had guys that didn’t belong on a CFL roster and Dolphins fans tried to talk them up as being decent, but now that we think we have a squad, anybody who isn’t amazing right outta the gate sucks…
Get real, seriously.
