2010 Phinsider Community Mock Draft - The Discussion Post

Welcome everyone to the 2010 Phinsider Community Mock Draft. There are lots of highly talented young men available this year. It should be a very exciting time for all of them.
This draft will take place over the next few weeks. As your team is placed on the clock, please post your pick, with a picture if possible, and an explanation of why you took that player in the comments. I will update the main body of the post with the picks as I see them posted.
If anyone has any questions, please post them below and if we have a delay because someone doesn't seem to be around (probably a 24-hour delay is minimum), I will use the alternate list to keep the draft going.
The order and team assigments are below.
New Rule: No player trades allowed. Any draft pick trades will be considered by the Phinsider community (via comments) prior to approval to try to keep them as realistic as possible.

With the first pick in the 2010 Draft, the St. Louis Rams select....
Ndamukong Suh, Defensive Tackle, University of Nebraska
With all of the talk of Sam Bradford, the pick almost went that way. But, Suh is such a NFL ready talent, he couldn’t be overlooked. With the picks of Chris Long and James Laurinaitis in the last two years, the defense is starting to build. With the 31st ranked defense and the 32nd ranked offense, there’s no wrong pick here. I just think the fall of from Suh is much bigger to the second round DTs over the fall of from Bradford to the 2nd or 3rd round QBs.

With the almost killing of Matthew Stafford last year, it’s time to get some protection. Not to mention, Detroit will be facing tremendous pass rushers with Julius Peppers, Jared Allen and Clay Matthews…. twice each.

Well, I can flat out tell you that
not everyone feels that Bradford is going to be the Rams’ pick. I live here and I can tell you that most of the St. Louis sportswriters are still fairly split on who they think is going to be the pick. And there has been a bunch of rumors floating around here that the Rams aren’t as high on Bradford as all the “experts” say they should be. Which is fine with me as I don’t think Bradford is going to be as good as everyone thinks he is going to be. I think he is going to end up like Derek Anderson or Brady Quinn. Lots of potential, a couple of great games here and there, but overall just pretty mediocre.
The feeling around here amongst the fans that I’ve talked to is that they are going to take the best player in the draft, Suh, with the first pick and that they have been getting pretty impressed with Colt McCoy. I expect them to take McCoy in the 2nd and not be lulled by all the hype from Kiper, McShay, etc into taking Bradford when they don’t feel he can be their franchise QB.

i think Bradford
is going to be an All-Pro QB. Just my opinion but he has a cannon and is accruate. Only question is his durability especially on a shaky Stl Team with a bad O-line. He could get killed. then again St L will just hand the ball to Jackson again 900 times.

Also keep in mind,
that WE did not start our rebuilding with drafting a QB. We drafted a LT in Jake Long first, then got a QB in Henne later in the draft. The Rams need just as much help on the defensive side of the ball as they do on offense, and I think Suh is just too much of a rare talent to pass up. And I think they are a lot closer on defense than they are on offense, so I think that they will take Suh and get the defense as close to rebuilt as they can then get the offense going.
And I disagree on your assessment on Bradford. I don’t see him as being the next great QB to enter the NFL. Like I said, in my own opinion, I think he is going to have a few great games here and there, but overall just be pretty mediocre.

Yeah, I will agree with you on that.
I think McCoy would be a pretty good QB for them. Not every QB that wins a Super Bowl can win it on their own like Peyton Manning or Tom Brady can. Most of the time it takes good play from the whole team, not just exceptional play from the QB. I think the Rams going with McCoy is a very plausible situation. I just don’t think they are letting themselves be brainwashed by all the Bradford hype.

I’d take Tebow over McCoy 100 times out of 100, and I don’t know if Tebow will ever be a starter either.

When he was healthy in college
he really looked really good. Granted he was playing on a Great OU team but still. I didn’t know the Rams were even considering taking anyone else besides Bradford. Sorry!
Well, part of my reasoning is also
that the Rams were pretty high on Jake Locker for this year before he decided to stay in school for his senior year, and they didn’t think that highly of Bradford then. But they’ve always been in the talks about where Suh is going to end up, and the whole McCoy thing is just my opinion on it. I just have this gut feeling that they are looking very hard at taking him with their 2nd round pick.

tired of the Bradford hype. Clausen is one of the best QB prospects to come out in a while, yet for some reason all the “experts” have a bias against him, whether it’s because he played at ND or because they think he has character concerns… The kid just had a ridiculous season in an offense run by many pro teams, under a coach that has 3 Super Bowl rings and is widely considered one of the top offensive minds in the sport, with very little talent on his OL, and an inconsistent and oft-injured supporting cast around him.

not arguing that. But there’s also a reason that the Rams have 6 wins in 3 years… they are clueless. I’ll bet that Clausen becomes a true Franchise QB, and Bradford busts. I don’t see how anyone can say Bradford is the better QB, when every comparison works in Clausen’s favor when projecting a QB to the NFL.

I think he's pointing out that
in almost every comparison used to project a QB, Ryan Leaf was projected better than Peyton Manning was in that years draft. And we all know what happened to Ryan Leaf. Projections don’t always turn out correct.
Don’t get me wrong though, cuz I agree with you. I think Clausen is going to be the better QB of the 2, but I understand the point Fox was trying to make.

Not having to make a true NFL read, dropback, or turn his back to the defense at any point (3 things you MUST do as an NFL QB.)
His accuracy is top-notch, I won’t argue that. I just see a high-bust potential with the kid that isn’t there with Clausen IMO.

I'm mostly agree with you
I think Clausen has better measurables and Bradford better intangibles. Bradford has better leadership and accuracy, but he also has a higher bust-rate due to the fact that his offense wasn’t exactly pro-style.
Clausen on the other hand, he has much greater arm strength and he’s used to NFL-style looks, but his decision-making could definitely use some work. I expect Bradford to be a Pennington-like QB: smart, deadly accurate, and a great leader. Clausen will be more like a Phillip Rivers: rocket, talented, and a DICK

Last summer, his top 3 WR’s spent the vacation at his house in California instead of home with their families because they wanted to work out together and get better. That doesn’t happen if the QB is a dick, or doesn’t have any leadership or intangibles.
Todd McShay is on some kind of crusade against Clausen, yet none of his criticisms hold any weight at all. This article sums up pretty much my whole argument, and it shows that a lot of the so-called “character concerns” are untrue.

An interesting read
To be honest I haven’t watched a whole lot of Clausen play, so my judgment comes just from his highlights I’ve seen. Bradford I’ve watched much more extensively.
The character concerns are always exaggerated in the media. I’ve never met Jimmy Clausen and I never will, so the only thing I can go by in judging his character is what the scouting reports say…which in this case is negative regarding his character. Although, the article states that players who played with Clausen never thought anything bad about him, so you have to wonder where the media is getting it from.
In my opinion, it doesn’t matter what the scouts think of him, it’s what the players think of him. So if what the players say is true, then I think he is probably better than Bradford (which I think is probably the case anyway)

Dick Vermiel and Co. did. And yes, in this instance, I think the Rams are wrong if they take Bradford over Clausen. I’m not gonna back down on my opinion because it’s not something I just decided on because somebody on TV said it.
Clausen could end up being the best QB out of the last 3 drafts, and it wouldn’t surprise me in the least.

With the 6th pick in the 2010 draft, the Seattle Seahawks select.......
Trent Williams, Offensive Tackle, Oklahoma.
My first choice was Bulaga, but Williams showed more athleticism at the combine. His work ethic has been questioned, but I think a year in the NFL will help him. He’s a solid run blocker who can upgrade Seattle’s LT position and help play to the Seahawks strength, the backfield tandem of Jones and Forsett. Not to mention helping keep Hasselbeck, or any other QB, alive. And at 6’5", 315 and a 4.81 40 time, he’s one of the faster OT’s in the draft.

Yes it is, I must say I know my language in a 85 to 90%
Spanish is too damn big, with lots of sinonimous and regional variations.
For example for kid: niño, huerco, chavito, morro, escuincle, parbulo.

The ratio is 2:1 but its one of those things thats impossible to know for sure with so many variations especially in Spanish.

but what I did last year to speed it up was go from one day to 12 hours say like from 10-10 and if the pick was not made I gave it to a random blogger or made the pic myself,it may delay it even further if we go buy the list of alternates and also give them the extra time we have time so lets see how it goes but really if people were down to do this then they should check each day or at least give a heads up that they wont be able to make their pick

I disagree...even with TO they couldn't get the ball out

I dont think its that much of a reach.
I think Graham is the best and most well rounded of all the DE/OLB prospects. Sure, E. Thomas would of been a great pick at this spot but like I said, I like the depth at some positions MUCH better than others. As far as Spiller, I never really considered him. We have to many holes on defense to draft him at 12.

12th is a bit high for him, he has not the measurables if you care to much about it.
I’m not sure he is the most well rounded OLB/DE. But it was your pick.

The problem is we need OLB help
and Graham won’t be there at #43. We need defensive help a whole lot more than we do at RB. Besides there are still some very talented RBs still to come. Spiller would be a great value pick but he will likely be on the sidelines for most of this season and would take over next year. With all of our holes, using your 1st pick on a guy who would be competing for one of 2 starting spots with RB and RW while leaving Wake and Moses as your likely starting OLBs would be a big gamble.

But as a position OLB has more value than FS
and there are a number of mocks out there right now that have Graham going in the top 20 and Thomas going after 20. I think they’re about even, so I would be happy with going either way. However, there is more depth at FS in this draft than OLB, so it might be best to go OLB in the 1st.

based on what i was reading, i didn't think QB was an immediate need....
when you’re looking at 26th ranked rushing offense with a backfield like Forsett and Jones, and then the 30th ranked pass defense, i think its better to address those problems first.
If you’re repeatedly getting burnt on defense, and you can’t run the ball on offense, a pro-ready QB isn’t gonna do you any good, IMO.
And i don’t think he’s too much of a reach here. I think his lack of combine stats has hurt his stock, but most places i was looking was placing him in the mid 1st to early 2nd.

6 teams that have no QB have passed up on him, including one team passing on him TWICE. Ridiculous. I can’t be the only guy that sees that the kid is one of the best QB prospects to come along in a long time. PLEASE go check his numbers, do some research on the kid, and stop listening to Todd McShay make shit up about him on National Television.

He is the best QB in the draft and has actually played in a pro style offense. I will shit a brick if he drops this far on draft day. Todd McShay is a total jerkoff and his “analysis” of Clausen is laughable. All you have to do is put on his tape and look at his stats. The Irish were atrocious as well.

Umm, are you referring to Brady Quinn?
That Montana guy was garbage and Theisman was terrible. Brady Quinn may not have had the best stats to this point, but the Browns are all around bad. Put a young quarterback on a shitty team and that will happen. Now that Holmgren is there, a young QB has a much better chance because he knows what he is doing.
Each player is different. You can’t just group a university’s QBs together and say it was because of the institution. Charlie Weis has a pretty good track record as an offensive coordinator and QB developer. Look at what Quinn and Clausen did in their first years compared with their end production.
I doubt Jerry Rice and one of the best offensive teams ever
around Montana had anything to do with it…..
