Why not sign Bess and DC$ for longer contracts?
Can someone please explain to me why Miami didn't offer Bess and DC$ long term contracts. Carpenter was a pro bowler and one of the most consistent kickers in the NFL and Bess was our best receiver and is developing into one of the best slot receivers in the NFL. I'm puzzled by the fact that Miami didn't want to lock them up for a long term deal and keep them in Miami definitely. Is there something I'm missing as to why this was only a 1 year deal?
Please let me know if there were some restrictions in place as to why this was done...

Probably to see how they develop.
If they do we’ll through the first half of the season, maybe they’ll get some extensions.

We are probably wrapped up...
We are probably wrapped up trying to get current roster holes filled at this point…. We kept them on the roster for now without having to spend too much money …
Terrence Cody NT (pick 12), Jerry Hughes OLB(pick 43)
Jason Worilds OLB (pick 73), Jimmy Graham TE(4th rd)
Linval Joseph(5th rd), Myron Rolle FS(6a), Danario Alexander WR (6b),
Daniel Te'o-Nesheim OLB (6c), Legarrette Blount RB (7a), Micah Johnson ILB (7b)
exactly and they stilhave more to prove
if your happy with mediocrity then pay them..you want to keep those undrafted free agents hungy..and in carpenters case hes a kicker so your always expendable..hes “3 missed field goals in a game” away from getting cut

I read somewhere that a lot of teams are avoiding giving out longterm contracts
as they normally contain guaranteed money. There is a believe that even if the owners have a lock out that guaranteed money owned to players for that period of time will still have to be paid out during the year. Its starting to look like the lack of a longterm contract is a bad deal for the players and the owners.

Grab your self some weapons because the only way to kill these monsters, is with a shot to the head or decapitation. So carry around a machete because you never know when you will run out of ammo.

Well a lock out wouldn’t be that bad but it would sure as hell feel like it.

I would think that both sides have way too much money to loose if something is not
worked out in time.

Same here. Sometimes stupid rich men let pride get in the way but somehow
money usually overcomes even that.

we are probably too busy to write up a multi-year contract for these guys
so what im thinking is that once the draft is over, we will re-structure their contracts to keep them here for the long-haul

Don't know but what I do know is that we will have 15 players from this team that will be FA's next yeàr

Because neither one of them have enough years in the league to be FA's next year.
At worst, they will be Restricted FAs, and we will get the right to match anything they are offered.

Yeah, I think the Dolphins had exclusive rights to them.
This is just business. I know they’ll both perform at a higher level this coming season so they’ll get a nice payday and multiyear contracts next year.
Due to the Dolphins had exclusive rights meaning Bess and DC$ cannot be FA and go job hunting. There was no need to give them a multiyear contract at this time. This is done all the time. But the players who have these contracts are usually practice squad material so you don’t hear about it at all.
Bess and DC$ entered the Dolphins as practice squad members(undrafted, walkons). When you enter the NFL via practice squad you must sign an exclusive rights contract with the team per NFL regulations.
I think...
What it was is that they had to get them signed so they can participate in offseason workouts and they might re-structure there contracts before the season
They might also be
waiting to see if a new CBA is reached for next year and see what the cap limit will be so they don’t sign them to some big contract now and then if there is a cap next year be in trouble. I think I remember reading on NFL.com somewhere that one of their writers was expecting a lot of 1 year contracts to be made this season because of that.
