The Dolphins WR Problem

I see a lot of people saying that the Dolphins should draft a WR in the first or second round. I am writing this article to completly disagree with this logic. The sad thing is I use to be on the WR bandwagon. It was only a few weeks ago that I looked at and compared the talent.

The defensive talent in the draft this year far outweighs any offensive ones. There is just too many defensive studs to pass up. Then you look at the talent of this years WR's. It is not really that great compared to last year. Most people have Dez Bryant as the head of the WR talent pool. I greatly disagree with this but I will get to that later.

The Dolphins have a lot of young athletes in their WR depth chart. Alot of people say it takes about 3 years to become a good reciever. I don't know if I agree with this or not but it does take time. For one if the young talent doesn't have at least one veteran in the position who are they going to learn from? I do believe that Turner, Hartline, and yes even Ginn, will become more solid in time.

I believe the Dolphins have two choices and one is close to being gone. The first choice is to get a veteran. They can do this through free agency or through trades. I believe the young WR's need a veteran. Someone who is at the least above average. This choice is close to being gone. They have made no move to secure a WR through free agency. Also as far as I know they have made no motions towards trying to trade for one.

Of course the second option is to draft for one. The draft is always risky. But I believe the draft is even riskier for a WR this year. Like I said before this years draft is defensive heavy. I think the best thing to do is to draft the best defensive players that are still there in our spots for the first 3 or 4 rounds.

Now I get to what I was talking about when I mentioned Dez Bryant. Although a lot of people think he will be the first WR taken ( and he may be) I think he is not a good pick. I believe the best WR and an easy steal of the draft is going to be Danario Alexander. This kid is big at 6'5 and has big yardage after the catch. He has the most recieving yards out of all the WR's in the draft. The only reason he is dropping is because of health concerns. He has had 3 surgeries on his knee.

Let's hope the Dolphins excel in the draft this year. Grab up all those big defensive beasts. Then when the smoke clears and someone like Danario is still there in later rounds, throw a Dolphins jersey his way. Please let me know what you think because this is my first article.

The only problem is that you're assuming the Dolphins will keep the #12 pick.

I think there is a possibility that the Triad will trade down. That way they can fill 3 holes with quality talent that they like. I hear that Dallas is working out Dez Bryant, for instance. If they keep #12 and don’t trade down I think its defense for the 1st 2 rounds.

Yeah

I thought about the trading down. Especially since there is so much defensive talent. I think it will depend on whos still open on the board. But there is a good chance they will trade down.

Phins shouldn't trade down....

I USED to advocate trading down but evidence shows that you generally end up with more players and less talent. Many times teams have traded down only to get players that don’t ever make an impact on their team. If they would have stayed at their original draft position and just drafted the best player on their board, they would have ended up with a top quality Pro Bowl caliber player. The phins should really take the best player for their needs at #12 and just keep trucking. If they trade out of their position, they will lose the real player they wanted and may end up with more busts….

Maybe

You may be right. I think it depends on how far down they trade to. There is so much defensive talent that they could trade down to the bottom of the 2nd and still be ok. At least thats what I think. I think they will probably draft Dan williams or JPP. But it really depends on who is still available at the time.

Danario Alexander? WOW

excelled somewhat????????

this kid had 113 catches 1781 yards 14 Touchdowns in ONE effin season!!!!
this guy is a first round talent and in his senior season he put up better receiving stats then jeremy maclin(1st round pick) without chase daniel
sure he needs to get stronger to fight off jams but so do most rookie receivers. we wont use him as a possession receiver so he can learn how to run routes eventually.
if he is available 4th or later he will be a steal

Thats what I was trying to say. He will be a steal and a sleeper. I am sure of it.

A good WR does not need separation....

That is what a crappy WR needs to be effective… The rare ones go get the ball anyway, in traffic, wherever.

Terrence Cody NT (pick 12), Jerry Hughes OLB(pick 43)
Jason Worilds OLB (pick 73), Jimmy Graham TE(4th rd)
Linval Joseph(5th rd), Myron Rolle FS(6a), Danario Alexander WR (6b),
Daniel Te'o-Nesheim OLB (6c), Legarrette Blount RB (7a), Micah Johnson ILB (7b)

Huh?

All great WRs demand a double team and still get separation.

True. The great ones can catch it with a guy draped all over him but they also routinely

get separation. I watched an Andre Johnson highlight video today. It was amazing to me how many teams let him get so wide open. Its not like everyone of them did not know that hes the best or second best WR in the game and somehow, someway he still manages to get wide quite often.

say what you will

but Danario will still be a steal. He has more recieving yards than all the other draft prospects. He is big and very physical. He is good at getting extra yardage after the catch. I would love to have a guy like him wearing a Dolphin jersey. He is a risk of course but no more than anybody else. I wouldn’t draft him in the top three rounds but if he drops lower than that he would be grabbed up fast. Some team will take the chance on him.

So ....

Who would you cut from the WRs on the roster to take on a project that has had surgery three times?

Good point.

Everyone talks bad about our WR’s but neither of them are easily replaced.

My argument is this...

Nearly every elite team that is winning SuperBowls or is a consistent play off contender has a true #1 Wide Receiver. Look at Reggie Wayne, Randy Moss, FItzgerald, even Hines Ward (hes a gamer), Marques Colston, T.O. when he was a Cowboy, etc etc…

The Pats won their SBs without a great receiver, but look who was distributing the ball. Bottom line is this. A great QB needs a great WR, and a great WR needs a great QB.

Idk how we should address our problem, but we need to address it sooner than later.

Brandon Marshall

Or my personal choice after Marshall, D. Bowe but hey I get no support on that one here. lol

Henne is the QB of the Miami Dolphins. Good.
Trade Brown? Are you smoking crack?
Hartline will be the Dolphins #2 for years to come. Kid has IT
We need this pass D to STEP THE F UP and do what they get paid to do!
We dont need a 30+ receiver we need younger, Bowe or Marshall will do fine

I would make the argument that Peyton Manning makes Reggie Wayne look better than he really is....

But hey … maybe that is just my opinion….

we might have a few good receivers but no number 1.

Thats what we need and thes what we should draft in the first round. dez bryant 12th pick overall and turns into an all-pro for us for years to come. your saying denario alexander is/will be the best reveiver taken in this draft? no way. IF he stays healthy and his knees hold up he might be a good receiver, but he wont be as good as dez bryant. i think alexander would take more time to develop and bryant is just a better weapon. if we dont get a receiver in this draft or we get one late and he doesnt turn out to be the number one guy we are setting ourselves back once again. a number one receiver has been a hole for us for a while now and that makes it our greatest need. bryant should be able to come in and produce right away. better than crabtree did after the holdout.

You think Bryant is better than Crabtree?

No.... way.... in.... hell

Dez will be alright (I think the character issues are overhyped) but he is benefiting from an excessively weak WR class. He’d probably be the 3rd-5th WR last year
