Dolphin Mock Drafts Around the 'Net, 3/19 Edition
It's time again to glance over the 40+ mock drafts we've been following to see how things have changed this week.
The biggest trend right now seems to be the falling stock of Dez Bryant. His off-the-field issues seem to have most experts believing Bryant will indeed be on the board when the Dolphins are on the clock with the 12th pick. And ESPN's Todd McShay has called Bryant the most talented receiver to enter the draft since Calvin Johnson and Andre Johnson. That's some lofty praise. But is the perceived baggage too much for a team like the Dolphins to take on?
Let's see what some of the internet's best mock drafts are saying today.

Brandon Graham: 9%
C.J. Spiller: 7% (-)
Rolando McClain: 2% (-)
All aboard the Dan Williams bandwagon, huh? I get it - he's the "safe" bet when trying to predict what Miami will do in the draft. The other safe bet is outside linebacker. But nobody has an idea as to which one the Dolphins would target. Jason Pierre-Paul and Sergio Kindle appear to be the leaders as of now. But many scouts love Brandon Graham - and the Dolphins might, too, if they can look past his height.
I also noticed that there's some momentum building for Brandon LaFell as a possible second round pick by the Dolphins. No other player came close in the 44 mocks above to matching the number of times LaFell was listed as the team's second round selection. Is it just speculation or is there something more to this? I have no idea.
And that's the bottom line to all this - nobody really has any idea right now. But between now and April's draft, I think we'll get a little bit better of a feeling as to what the Dolphins might do when they get put on the clock.

crowder is fine.
your not going to have superstars talent at every position. crowder is good enough. and he’ll only get better with a guy like dansby next to him.
Crowder
was one of the worst tackling linebackers in 2009, according to Pro Football Focus. He was fourth-worst among all linebackers—Ayodele actually tackled better.
Well lets all pray that he gets that fixed.

Mccluster in the 3rd?
That would be a great pick, one thing our offense lacks is explosiveness and dynamic players. oh man can’t wait for the draft!!!!!!!!!
I agree
It would be AWESOME. But I really feel like his stock has risen enough that he wont be around for our 3rd.

Dolphins have met with LaFell and expressed their interest
I look at it conditionally, if Williams is our first, then LaFell will be our second. If someone else is first, then Cody will be our second

no
I mean simplifying it
if player X is our first then Player Y WILL BE our 2nd? Do you have inside information or something?
Sounds like more of what you would do....
I do not see the Dolphins picking a NT in the first or second rounds… as difficult as that may be for some to fathom.
I do see different plans the Dolphins could make solely on their strategy, but come draft day, it will hinge on who is still available.
(Where’s that strategy report Nick?!)

If he is available
i don’t think you can pass up a guy like Dan Williams who can be an offensive line buster. With the QB’s upcoming on this year’s schedule(Brady x 2, Flacco, Roethlisberger(sp?), Palmer, Rodgers, Cutler, Favre, not to mention Sanchez x 2 and Stafford are making strides) the prime focus defensively has to be QB pressure. with the first pick, I believe that the player best suited to help pressure the QB CONSISTANTLY should be who is taken whether it be Williams, McClain, Kindle, Whomever the front office likes the most
"Bears, Beets, Battlestar Galactica" - Jim Halpert as Dwight Schrute
We got Wake and JT to do that.
Don’t forget about AP, Forte, #1 Jets run offense, The two headed monster that is the Ravens backfield. Ap is argueably the best RB even with the fumbles. These offenses will gouge us with the run if we don’t do something for our NT dilema
The only wisdom is the knowledge that you don't know.
And, as always, screw the JETS!!!!!!!!
I see how you and IE are thinking...
… Wake is unproven in dropping back on passing… and JT isn’t even resigned. So I don’t think the team is set in “getting to the quarterback”.
There will be some really good NT in later rounds, imo. Kade Weston of Georgia, Jay Ross of East Carolina, and Terrel Troup of Central Florida… are all good NT to be had and would upgrade what the Dolphins already have. Linvell Joseph is another impressive heavy weight from East Carolina. Dude is 328lbs, runs a 5.0 40.
Yes, Danny boy will be considered heavily (pardon the pun) if he’s available with the Dolphs pick… but so will a rushing linebacker and offensive weapons. Gotta still score more than your opponent to win.
For me, there are two on offense and three on defense I will be extremely happy with if one of those becomes a Dolphins player…

Dan Williams is the guy.
but lately ive been kinda leaning toward Dez Bryant. while Dan Williams is the safest pick. i just feel miami has to do something for our WR core. and henne needs a weapon. i would like someone a little faster than Dez but id rather have a guy who can go up and take the ball and make a play after the catch (Dez) than someone who can out run everybody, but drops every big pass (ginn). and we got a young QB, young WR talent (Hartline, Bess) but we just need 1 more guy. that big playmaker who can go up and TAKE that jump ball in the back of the endzone. and i think Dez can be that guy.

Taylor Mays in Round 2?
Is his stock falling THAT much, nowadays? I guess as a 2nd round value, you’d have to consider it, huh?
I’m still on the Spiller, Hughes, D. Thomas, J. Graham wagon…all aboard!!
Eddie V
The only thing
I can see being an issue with Mays is his mental toughness, He get’s agressive at times which is what we need…. The kid has great size…. I don’t see a lot of down side to him at all….
by Rickslilpiece on Mar 19, 2010 9:15 AM EDT up reply actions
The Draft Tracker at NFL.com gives a good break down
" He tends to be too aggressive with the ball in the air, trying to make the big hit instead of making a play on the ball. He can be inconsistent with his angles and technique but relies on his great athleticism to recover and make the play. " NFL.com
by Rickslilpiece on Mar 19, 2010 9:33 AM EDT up reply actions
That's a very incomplete break down
Hey didn’t try to make a play on the ball because he couldn’t; he has no ball skills. Mays hardly made any big plays plays (excluding hits), unlike Thomas and Berry. And his athleticism alone was okay in college, but will cause him to be burnt in the NFL. He won’t be good in coverage at the next level.
He's a much better SS prospect than FS.
But we really need a ball-hawking FS, not another big-hitter
I'm open....
You make good points. Mays was more of a hitter than a ball getter…. I’d take the ball over a hit…. Thomas is looking better.
by Rickslilpiece on Mar 19, 2010 9:45 AM EDT up reply actions
I know some scouts...
have Mays projected as an OLB, due to his tackling ability and size. Would anyone object to him if he was drafted as an OLB?? Imagine that dude (all of 230 lbs and a 4.4 40) coming off the edge on one side, and Wake off the other.

Hmmmmm....
Converting is possible…. He’s close to Taylors size isn’t he? Add Two strong middle guys (Dansby being one)… Close the pocket off the edges quick wouldn’t they?

Blitz!
I have a feeling we’re going to see some good blitz packages this coming season.
by Rickslilpiece on Mar 19, 2010 12:53 PM EDT up reply actions
Mays has bust written all over him if he sticks at safety
I view him more as a Thomas Davis type OLB. Safety in college but couldn’t cover. That was Davis’ knock, too.
OLB in Round 2
I don’t think we can go wrong with Brandon LaFell, Jason Pierre-Paul or Sergio Kindle as our OLB, I do think if Dez is open at the #12 the FO will grab him up. Other wise I’m sure one of our AFC East buddies will snag him up….. (Moss did make mention this would be his last year with N.E.) So I see it being WR in round 1, OLB in round 2. BUT! That Safety spot hasn’t gotten much attention by the mock draft guessers either……
Yea....
I think his size is an issue for scouts…. I’ve heard he has good play making skills and makes yardage after the interception though…. Taylor Mays is also looking good.
by Rickslilpiece on Mar 19, 2010 9:11 AM EDT up reply actions
it would be fun to see Sean Smith at 6'3" and Taylor Mays at 6'3"...
Shutting off half of the field…
If I'm a chicken, you're a turkey....
I don't know why there is no love for Thomas
His playmaking ability more than make up for his 1-2 inch shortness, which shouldn’t matter much as a FS. Him and Berry are the FS the Dolphins really need. But then again this draft is deep in FS, so a starting FS could be picked in the 2nd or even 3rd round.
LaFell on the other hand, is receiving a lot of love, but he does not impress me at all.
If Berry falls to 12...
There’s no doubt in my mind the FO will snatch him up, but there’s just no way he falls that far. Somebody will take Berry before he gets to our pick.

There seems to be a ton of talent in this years draft… There’s so many players that can make an instant impact on any team (both sides of the ball).

Short, too slow, not big enough to play in the NFL, sure bust, wasted pick!
When asked why he spent a draft pick on a player that was considered a reach at best he said “When you watch the kid on tape all he does is make plays!”
I think that kind of thinking that is overlooked too often these days. Thats how you get a guy that did not make a lot of plays but kicks ass at the combine go in the top of the draft and become a bust and guys that don’t really impress at the combine and because of it slide even though they were great in college and then everyone is surprised that that kid taken in the 5th is now a star in the NFL.

Nice...
a thread with pictures related to football and not assorted grotesque shenanigans (ala yesterday).
Anyway, in this case, I tend to think along the lines Matty does: that the Mock Drafts are merely looking at the safe picks and with that in mind, Dan Williams becomes that guy. I’m not convinced the FO would even draft a NT in the 1st, even though it is a clear need.
If I had to bet a full 34 days out fro the draft as to who we’d take, I’d probably put my chips on the OLB spot and leave it at that. Hard to do much more than guess at this point.
Shenanigans....

I think LaFell or Morgan Burnette will be absolute steals in the second round!

Would be a great 1st & 2nd Round……LaFell is ready for the NFL as a polished route runner….also very strong ….. compares to Boldin (I like that)….is much quicker then his clocked time – so he knows how to work the field. Bryant may be the top WR but LaFell may be more NFL ready which the Dolphins NEED ASAP.
Williams at NT….enough said!
For well over a month I have list these three as my top four choices
Williams, Pierre-Paul, Kindle, Cody
I honestly don’t see the front office looking past the size of graham……he looks like a stud but our team is being built on size first and speed second…………not the other way around
look for pierre-paul or sergio kindly………..my favorites for the pick
also…..i told many of you about my belief that though the draft and free agency we aquire 4 new linebackers……….we have dansby so far………..that leaves 3 more to go and free agency is not over yet………………
Just one mans opinion...
I still think if we don't take a Safety in FA...
Earl Thomas is our #1 pick. There are good OLB’s and DT’s to be had in 2nd and 3rd round.
If I'm a chicken, you're a turkey....
I saw a mock draft on bleacher report
Golden Tate at 12. (is he graded that high?)
And Cam Thomas in the second.
Wouldn’t mind these two.

Earl Thomas all day
He seems to be dropping off the radar rather quickly… not liking this! He is in the same league as Eric Berry and safety is a NEED, while WR is just a serious want. We definitely go FS/NT/OLB in the 1st (forget this Dez nonsense), and my guess is FS. Draft is deeper at NT then it is at safety!

Weller and Brian's combo of Spiller/LaFell/Cam Thomas
is my favorite. But I don’t think we take two O guys in the first 3 picks. I think if we take an offensive guy, it will be Spiller in the first OR LaFell/Damian Williams in the 2nd, with 2 of either NT/OLB/FS with the other 2 picks.

How come nobody addressed Todd McShay's retard quote?
The man is an idiot.. he really is. Dez Bryant is barely the best WR in this class, and last year’s WR class was better. Crabtree, Britt, hell maybe Maclin and Harvin are all better than Bryant.

I found that comment astounding too...
Calvin & Andre Johnson are top 5 receivers in this league. Comparing Bryant’s talent level to those guys seems silly at best, as both Calvin & Andre were thought of very, very highly coming out.
Last year’s class was definitely better and next year’s will be too.

when you consider the players that will be there at 12 . . .
Drafting Dan Williams would be an absolute travesty. I’d rather have McClain, and I never wanted McClain.

Solid OLB. Replaced by Maualuga as the premier pass rusher, and has a history of foot injuries. He’s only 26. Definitely been a consummate professional, and his play is nothing to sneeze at.
If he gets signed to a short-term deal, it might change the draft outlook.
Could very well...

The thing that scares me about Dan Williams ....
Is for all that he has done to make his draft stock rise after the Senior Bowl, he really had not done much before that point…. No one was looking at this guy until then… On the other hand for all of the crap that we have been hearing about Terrence Cody he is a guy that has dominated on the collegiate level.
He is a 2 down NT(like every NT in the league), he is overweight at 370lbs(just like Vince Wilfork), and he can’t pash rush(huh? do you even know what a NT is supposed to do? pash rush??). The thing that makes a good defense into a great one is the guys you have up front, where it all starts.
Name a defense that dominated that did not have guys up front getting the job done. If you shut down the running game and make a team one dimensional, you can tee off on the QB with your OLBs and let your secondary make plays on the ball, instead of worrying about coming up and supporting the run all the time. Name a dominant 3-4 defense that did not start with a 1st or 2nd round NT? I am not talking about a decent defense, or a defense that was pretty good for one year, I mean dominant year in and year out.
the Miami Dolphins
In 1994 we selected Tim Bowens with the 20th pick in the draft. We picked up Daryl Gardener with the 20th pick in the 1996 draft. We then got the job done at DE(similar to an OLB in the 3-4) with Jason Taylor(1997 Rd 3, pick 73) and Trace Armstrong(and older vet we picked up in FA that helped mentor JT), Zach Thomas (1996 Rd 5, Pick 154) Sam Madison (1997 Rd 2, Pick 44), Patrick Surtain (1998 Rd 2, Pick 44) and Brock Marion at FS(FA pickup).
Defense for 1998 2002 when we lost - Allowed 325 points (20.3/g), 17th (Gardener started 10 games)
1996
1997— Allowed 327 points (20.4/g), 16th
1998— Allowed 265 points (16.6/g), 1st 1999— Allowed 336 points (21.0/g), 19th
2000— Allowed 226 points (14.1/g), 3rd 2001— Allowed 290 points (18.1/g), 11th
2002— Allowed 301 points (18.8/g), 4th(lost Gardener 2003— Allowed 301 points (18.8/g), 4th
2004— Allowed 261 points (16.3/g), 3rd
2005—Allowed 354 points (22.1/g), 20th(no Bowens)

Definitely Defensive Pick
I agree with most mocks that the Dolphins should pick a defensive position. Probation NT or LB. I also agree that the Dolphins need a good reciever badly. The Dolphins can easily steal a good wr in later rounds.
In my opinion Danario Alexander is the best wr in the draft right now. He is probalby going to drop to the third or fourth round. This is an easy steal for a team like the Dolphins that need someone big and physical that can catch and make plays after it is caught.
Go Danario! I hope to see him in a Dolphins uniform.
Stop sleeping on Terrence Cody.
Seriously, guys.
I’ll agree, Dan Williams is one of the best NT prospects in this draft. But we’re dismissing Cody waaaaaay too quickly. Of all the nose tackle options, he’s the best space eater, the best run stopper, and the best overall anchor for the line.
Williams is more athletic and can push the pocket, but he tends to disappear when he’s double teamed. Besides, that’s not really the point of an NT in a 3-4 defense. The only thing a 3-4 DT has to do is be stout against the run, and make sure to occupy enough linemen to allow the OLBs to rush.
And as for the work ethic worries, let’s be real: the guys lost a ton of weight just for the combine. If someone lights a fire under his ass, he’ll step up.
I wouldn’t mind taking an OLB in the first and picking up Cody in the second round.
mock drafts
Although a lifelong Dolphins fan, the hailredskins.com site has about 170 mock drafts on it just for fun. Interesting to see the different points of view. I still think the tuna goes with JPP or the Graham kid from MI.
