Best Draft Assuming.....

No free agents are picked up other than JT

Star-divide

I know most of you dolphin fans' have fallen in love with the idea of picking up a nose tackle in the first round.  There has also been much debate over the idea of drafting an OLB, WR, and yes even RB.  I however have a suggestion that would help us improve much quicker.  My personal opinion includes drafting a Free Safety in the first round.  If Eric Berry is available I would snatch him up in a second.  If he is not then I'd say Earl Thomas.   So, let me shed some light on to why this is a much more sensible approach.

The first and main reason I believe a free safey is the right choice is well, look at the draft prospects available.  In the top 100 draft picks' only five of whom' are free safeties.  As far as DT go there are a plethora of 12.  OLB also has a decent amount of 9.  In the regard of WR, 11 are listed.

Yes, we all know nose tackle is a huge need.  Free Safety at this point is however, much more critical.  Not many are available and to recieve a valuable pick we would need to address this early.  We can focus on that later and still have a good replacement that we can mold into a great player later.  This way both positions can be addressed and we can still have a great player in FS and also have good, maybe even great NS.

OLB is also an important position to look at.  Even though it needs to be addressed, we do still have Cameron Wake, Charlie Anderson, and Reggie Torbor.  Wake isn't the best all around player, but let's face it the man can rush the quarterback.  I also believe with coaching of Mike Nolan not just Wake, but the other players will also improve dramatically.  These three linebackers will become pretty solid players.  There also is an extremely great chance JT signs back to the Dolphins.  He wants to be here and of course we want him.  Alongside these OLB we can also draft an OLB in the 2nd or 3rd.  This core of Linebackers would prove to be a solid force in the NFL.

Everybody also wants that number one reciever.  Well, honestly we don't.  We have a very good core of recievers as it stands right now.  It has depth and versatility.  Yes we can pick up one also pick a reciever later on.  I know Bill Parcells has a talent for finding hidden gems in this catagory a.k.a Miles Austin.  This reciever will be good and again have a great chance of being great.  Together, our recievers will be tremendous and also keep growing as a unit.

First off I can not fathom why anyone would want us to draft C.J. Spiller first.  Yes, he is a great player, but I do not think he can be a top 5 running back in the NFL.  Ronnie Brown, if not in the top 5 is a top 10 RB.  Alongside Ricky Williams and our very good offensive line, the running game has no problems.  Ricky Williams is also a top 10 to 15 RB.  Not only do we have these two players, we also have Lex Hilliard who I believe will develop to be a great 2nd RB to split time with the others.  Lousaka is the man who picks up or 3rd and shorts and 4th and shorts.

I hope all of you see the point I am trying to get accross.  This draft strategy is the easiest way we can be guaranteed to improve every one of these positions and improve the most this offseason.  The NFL is now a passing League and as it stands we do not of a liable free safety in our roster.  Our corners would have less responsibility and grow from having a top notch FS.  Free Safety is the way to go.

Good Points

When you break down the # of FS vs NTs, it makes sense to wait to grab a NT as they are more plentiful this year. The one thing I don’t agree with is the term “it’s a passing league now”. I know rule changes have favored the air attack, but I’ll wait to declare it a passing league….

Spiller is tempting, but at 12 I agree with you. Also, I think Torbor is better than what a lot of people give him credit for…..

Thank you.

If anybody read that fanshot on OLBs and 10-yard splits, the guy clearly states that 40 times have dropped dramatically in recent years. This, to me, means guys are getting stronger and speed is slowly falling off. How could it possibly be a passing league if tough, physical play is trending upward more and more with each year?

ok

Yes the defense is getting more physical, but that is not the stat you look at. Look at the two teams that made it to the super bowl. Two teams that pass more than they run. If we want to be able to contend with teams such as these we need a solid pass defense. As it stands right now we are giving up a plentiful amount of big plays and no solid free safety.

well, my ideal draft right now is

1 FS (preferably earl thomas)
2 DT (preferably cam thomas)
3 WR (" " Lafelle)
4 TE (" " Graham)
5 RB (" " Blount)

or something to that extent

so yea, i think we should draft a FS #1

I don't know if Blount is a RB that would fit our system, he is more of a B. Jacobs than a Brown

I disagree with you about the RB position and the WR position

our WR’s are not great, they are probably in the bottom 5 in the league. Ricky is definitely not top 10-15, and he’s retiring after this season. Ronnie isn’t top 5 (top 10 maybe) and is also probably gone next year. Hilliard is a backup, nothing more, and Polite is a FB who gets 1 carry a game. If we don’t address RB, it will be the worst and most shallow position on the team next offseason, which is not something I want. You can’t be desperate going into FA or the Draft, because you either severely overpay for somebody who’s not worth it, or you reach in the draft for a guy 20 picks too early. Taking Spiller this year gives us an extremely dangerous offensive weapon that not only can contribute immediately on special teams, but can become a good-to-great back once we lose our R&R Express. Plus, I’m already looking ahead to next season and giving us the flexibility come FA and the Draft to add the best players at any position, instead of being FORCED to take a RB.

What about Deji Karim (Southern Illinois) instead at a later round?

he’s no Spiller, but he is 5-9 210 runs a 4.37 40 and had 240-1,694 at 7.1 ypa with 18 TDs for a small school

1st: Earl Thomas S; 2nd: Lamarr Houston NT/DE; 3rd: Linval Joseph NT; 4th: Adrian Tracy OLB; 6A: Stevenson Sylvester ILB; 6B: Deji Karim RB; 6C: Jameson Konz TE; 7A: Scott Long WR;

That Karim kid could go undrafted. He could more than likely be had with one of our 7's.

And at that point, yeah, we should snatch him up.

1. CJ Spiller RB Clemson 2. Jerry Hughes OLB Texas Christian
3. Reshad Jones S Georgia 4. Linval Joseph NT East Carolina
6a. Robert Johnson S Utah 6b. Micah Johnson ILB Kentucky
6c. Kion Wilson ILB South Florida 7a. Shay Hodge WR Mississippi
7b. Michael Hoomanawaui TE Illinois

wow i hate fans like this

Seriously? Would you not like our franchise to become better now? We need to fill the positions we need not want. Running backs are so plentiful and can always easily be found. Bill Parcells is good at finding these kind of players later. When Ronnie is healthy he is not doubt in the top 10 RBS. The recievers yes are not great but with an addition in the draft, again in a later round, they will still be a very good corps. The only way to have a great solid team now is to fill all of the need positions. In the end this will benefit the most. You always see teams going for the glamour picks and seriously how often does that work out? If you are a true fan you would be able to see this….

by funkysteve43 on Mar 16, 2010 8:04 PM EDT up reply actions

lol a true fan?

really? How is an impending need a glamour pick? I’m sick of hearing “when Ronnie is healthy” because that isn’t often. I disagree that he’s a top 10 RB. Here’s some stats:

2009 – Ronnie Brown, 33rd in total rushing yards, 13th in yards per game. There was 15 backs that hit 1000 yards, including our own Ricky Williams…
2008 – Ronnie Brown, 19th total rushing yards, 25th in yards per game. There was 16 backs that hit 1000 yards this season.
2007 – Ronnie Brown, 35th total rushing yards, 7th in yards per game. There was 17 backs that hit 1000 yards this season..

seeing a pattern yet? He’s NOT elite. He CAN’T stay healthy. He’s approaching 30 years old (when RB’s fall apart) with 2 serious injuries in the last 3 seasons…

And if RB’s are sooo plentiful, why are they drafted in the first round every year? That’s a myth. Decent backs are a dime a dozen. Great backs are not.

Would you not like our franchise to become better now? We need to fill the positions we need not want.

Do you think we are winning a Super Bowl this year with a starting RB that can’t finish a season and the worst WR corps in the league, not to mention at least 4 new starters on defense, a few of which might be rookies? I’m sorry, but my expectations aren’t that high. Smart drafting is not reaching for immediate needs and ignoring depth and future needs. Watch how NE, Indy, Pittsburgh, and those teams draft. They take players at positions before they are desperate to fill those positions. That is why I want Spiller. He’s the best offensive player in the draft, and he will able to seamlessly step in when our top 2 RB’s are gone in 2011 and it suddenly becomes a position of weakness.

Our WR’s, suck. As a whole, we have one of the worst WR groups in the league. There is not one person on our team that the defense has to gameplan around. Do you really think a late-round draft pick makes them dangerous? Open your eyes bro..

Are you now the one that decides who is a true fan and who is not?

You know what I am sick of? People that claim that RB’s are so easy to find. A fan that has been with this franchise for any period of time would know that from the glory days of the 70’s till the Ricky/Ronnie days arrived were void of any backs that were worthy of top RB status.I would suggest that you ask Dan Marino how easy it is to find a top flight back. I love Ronnie but your assertion that when Ronnie is healthy hes a top ten back only hold up for those few games a year on average that he is healthy. If he had shown that he could stay healthy then I would agree that we can ride this out for another 3 or 4 years but seeing as Ricky is more than likely gone in a year I would think we would be fools to pass up on a game breaker if he falls to us.
