let me tell u about "character guys"
Our regime is painted to only show love for "character guys" (whether referring to prospects or FA players) and I guess that label is valid for the most part. However, they do not make millions to judge character, they earn their money by selectively analyzing the best fits for their team and molding that team into the baddest bunch on the planet! History shows that Parcells is darn good at building champions, so we should all claim: "In Tuna We Trust"!
However, as maniacal fans, we can't help but dream about being in a decision making role (which is why we blog) LOL!
If I were VP of Football Operations for a pro organization, I would not be as concerned with fitting my team with character guys as I would with finding the best athlete by position. Although, I can understand -to a point- shying away from prima donnas that can demolish team chemistry. The Dolphins already shed some bad weight with the release of Joey Porter and I'm sure our boys don't plan on bringing in anyone with any baggage. That said, I urge all you Brandon Marshall and Dez Bryant supporters to give up posting about them.
- Marshall is an AMAZING specimen as far as receivers go and is a proven talent, but his attitude is too much of a liability.
- Bryant, to me, is a mini-Marshall (physically and emotionally). The NFL employs men who SHOULD be serious about their job. Prove to me you can act like a man before you prove to me how great a receiver you can be.
Allow me to clock back in as VP...draft day is here and I have the 12th pick...executive decision...trade that bad boy down! I feel our needs are as follows (in order): NT, WR, TE, S, RB.
- Terrance "Mt." Cody(NT) is proving to be a "character guy" by working harder to drop weight and prepare himself for the professional transition. He's proving to be a man before proving to be a pro-NT.
- Golden Tate(WR) has always been my favorite WR in this year's draft. He sure ain't 6'2, 225 lbs but the guy is a great route-runner, has solid speed, even more solid hands, he's really good with YAC, and is a very versatile reciever.
- Jimmy Graham(TE) seemed to impress Tony Sporano during the Senior Bowl, proving he has the perfect mix of skill & toughness valued by the Dolphins football Czar. It also helps that he is 6'6, 260 lbs and is one of the faster TE prospects. He also played basketball at UM, so can we say, athlete?
- Major Wright(S) was an essential part of a Florida Gators defense that plays as fast as any defense in the pros (very tough for me to say being a UM fan). It should be easy for Wright to manage a good amount of interceptions when you've got corners like Vontae Davis & Sean Smith, but you also got to love that this kid can actually tackle.
- Toby Gerhart (RB) is a top 5 RB in this year's draft because he's smart, quick and punishing. Weighing in at 231 lbs not many guys want to stand in his way; and he wouldn't awe in the amusement of a white-boy running back? Taking it back to the 70's baby!
All character guys and studs at their positions. I'd love any combination in the 2nd round and a couple might even fall to the 3rd round (or later) and are all possible options for the Dolphins.
Are you ready for the future???

No a if we get a damn good TE,
we don’t really HAVE to get a #1 WR. A TE would be a better endzone target than a #1 WR ( A TE is any QBs BFF, along with the LT) What our Offense is built around the west coast offense and you don’t need great WRs.
The only wisdom is the knowledge that you don't know.
On the Draft Hernandez in 2nd Bandwagon.
Now lets go get OJ Atogwe.
The only thing you know about me is.. THATS ALL YOUR EVER KNOW!!
And, as always, screw the JETS!!!!!!!!
glad you dont run our team
you have needs all wrong
3 new 2010 starting LBers via 2010 draft
Confidence breeds success, self-doubt breeds failure
I second that...
You can’t put WR before FS or OLB. I agree with you on NT, although I want Earl Thomas in rd 1
Good post, but a couple things.
a) Trading down is rare occurence. Especially in a DEEP draft such as this one. Teams know they can get comparable talent later in the draft and NOT pay as much as a higher pick. Trading down just doesn’t happen as much as fans want it to.
b) Cody, is still a character guy. Sure he’s cutting weight now, but you don’t think that has anything do to with his agent telling him, “Look, you can make a couple extra million if you get in the gym and lose some weight.” My concern is that he’d go right back into his pre-senior bowl form, gain all that weight and get lazy in the offseasons after he gets that fat draft day paycheck.
c) Most teams have “character issue” guys. Its just the way it is. The NFL is a microcosm of the general population….its going to happen. Anytime you take a broke college kid and overnight make him in the top 1% of wage earner in the country….you are going to have people unable to handle this change. You are also going to get people that get a sense of entitlement because they are all of a sudden so wealthy. Especially if they are one of the best at their positions. Hell, Broadway Joe? Big Ben, Michael Irvin, Lawrence Taylor…the list goes on and on.
You can’t have a team full of choir boys, unless you want to be playing the Ravenscroft Beauty College every week. Period.
If this post contains no substance, just assume that my answer is Brandon Marshall. Pay the 1st and 3rd, get the proven guy, and don't worry about that position for the next decade.
btw Rec'd
Even though I don’t agree with a lot of it, its well thought out, and formatted nicely :)

You really seem to like formatting.
And I agree that it is a good thing too.

Solid post man! Rec'd!
Well written, good info. I don’t necessarily agree with your classification of needs vs. wants, but i would not be unhappy with a draft that plays out along the lines of what you are describing…. with a couple of exceptions:
- While i don’t think trading down will be realistic, I think everyone would be good with that assuming a top 5 guy is not still on the board at the #12 pick.
- I don’t care for Cody. I hear you about him working hard now, but i would have to ask “why now and not before?” The obvious answer is money, and once he gets it, what will be his motivation to continue working hard?

Character guys...
Needs vs Wants w/e, we need to beef up wr’s for Henne. He could very well be a top 10 qb if we give him the help. Because of our wildcat though, picking up CJ Spiller would be amazing. He would also beable to return punts(Bess sucks ass at that) and open up the recieving game. If we get a chance at Spiller it would be silly not to pick him up. But Parcell’s is a blockhead and defensive minded. Brown is still a pimp and can run that O like no other. PLEASE BRING ME SPILLER. FUCK CHARACTER GUYS!
watch the language...
dude, our receivers aren’t the best but we lost a few important games due to our inability to stop the other team from scoring. golden tate would be that flex guy we need cuz he’s a legit receiver and can be used for wildcat plays. and we still got ginn to return punts/kicks.

gracias
appreciate the feedback boys…while it isn’t common to trade down, i guess i was hoping for another team to trade up…i’m not a fan of picking anyone at 12 who’d be there. of course i liked mcclain but no need now that we got dansby (unless we wanna get rid of crowder).
what if...
what if we don’t draft a safety? what are the possibilities of the dolphins signing Otagwe from the rams. i hear Darren Sharper is still available…obviously not a long term option but a decent enough piecemeal, no? how much do we trust Clemons with the starting role? worst case, we can still sign G. Wilson for A LOT less $$$…
Sharper would be a good pickup.
Although I personally am a fan of going for Atogwe. He would probably come cheaper than Sharper, and he’s younger so he could fill the FS spot for a while.

me too
i like Atogwe too but i think the best time to sign him will be too late. he becomes unrestricted in june. until then the rams have him tendered (which will still be cheap cuz i doubt they’ll match any offer)
2010-11 Miami Dolphins starting tight end:

Just got off the phone with Webster’s, “Jimmy Graham” has taken over the definition of “stud.”
If only we had him on the football team for 4 years…

I'm with you Cody and Major Wright...
Major Wright was able to still make all his plays starting 20 yards deep. Given an NFL defense he’ll be even more involved and he brings the hit stick every game.

done with WR talk
If the front office felt we needed a “#1” WR they would make the deal and give up the first pick for Marshall.Since they have not done so, then it stands to reason that they would not use that pick on a maybe. drafting a reciever in the first round. Therefore that means picking a receiver in a later round. We have receivers from later rounds that they have invested time and money in all ready. Plus, if they keep Thigpen, they will need the roster spot for White.
