Realigning the NFL Version 1
I enjoyed putting together the first post I did which delved into the distances teams travel throughout the NFL. Check it out before you jump into this.
Geographic advantages and thoughts on league-wide realignment
When looking at the current amount of miles that NFL teams travel I kept being drawn to the west coast and trying to find a perfect situation. The perfect situation is moving a team to Los Angeles as well as maybe San Antonio or Salt Lake City. I’ll save that fun for a later version.
This version focuses on lowering the total miles that teams travel within the division. In this version you’ll quickly see that lots of rivalries are lost in the shuffle although more then a few are kept intact. No worries, this is just version 1, the next version will be a mix of current rivalries as well as geographic improvements. Have patience because I’m confident that once we relocate a team or two that most key rivalries can be maintained.
It’s no secret that a majority of NFL teams are located in the northeast. In order to minimize the average distance to a team’s division rivals it was imperative to group those teams in the northeast together. I then worked my way southwest grouping teams together as best as possible. With five teams on the West coast (including Arizona) I had to make some tough decisions but in the commentary I’ll try and justify as many as possible.
Check it out after the jump.
Here we have Version 1. I didn’t like how the division names looked since the regions didn’t match up from AFC to NFC. Please don’t get wrapped up in debating the names, they’re just names and most likely will change back to regional names once I can make it work. The first number listed shows their new total miles in distance to division rivals. The second number shows the change in their previous amount from the current NFL alignment. Enjoy!

All four of these teams saw big improvements in distance. They represent the four shortest distances traveled in the entire NFL under this realignment. The Eagles, Redskins and Giants already have great history. Baltimore is right in the middle and would fit in nicely with the existing rivalries among all three of the other teams. I tried to get the Eagles and Steelers together but it just wasn’t working for this version. I also thought about putting both New York teams in the same division but that too just wouldn’t work in this version when you take the other teams in the northeast into consideration.

The Patriots, Jets and Bills have solid history and adding a team like Pittsburgh should only enhance it. The Steelers close proximity to Buffalo should help to keep the Bills in Buffalo (for this version at least). Pittsburgh is the first team to see an increase in their amount of distance compared to the current NFL alignment. The key is that the distance is still about 200 miles less then the new average. Besides the Steelers, the other teams see big improvements compared to their current NFL alignment. Inserting the Steelers into the Patriots-Jets rivalry would be something to look forward to.

The headline here is St. Louis and the drop in their distance. It’s the largest drop in the realignment. They previously traveled over 5,600 miles, 1300 more then Seattle who previously had the second worst travel distance. Indianapolis also sees a big drop with Cincinnati seeing a smaller drop. Cleveland sees a small increase but still comes in below the new average which is 1,348 miles. The Browns-Bengals rivalry is maintained.

Miami and Jacksonville see huge decreases in their amount of distance, registering the second and third highest decreases. Tampa sees a decent decrease. Carolina gets a slight increase and this time I can’t use the excuse that they’re under the average, they aren’t. My reasoning here is that we’re starting to get into the southeast and it’s not a perfect world from here to the west. Carolina is a new team in the NFL and their location is right in the middle the northeast, southeast and south central areas. Putting them with the teams in the northeast didn’t make sense which was the case in the south central area as well. This was a best case scenario for them.

Atlanta and New Orleans stay in the same division and the addition of Tennessee should add to the foundation. Houston and Tennessee should be an instant rivalry as well causing leftover Oilers fans in Houston to truly make a decision on which team they support. Atlanta sees a small increase in distance but like Carolina they’ll have to live with it until a team or two relocate.

Good news first. All four teams saw improvements in their distance compared to the current NFL alignment. Kansas City gets big improvement in distance and the other three teams see a good amount of improvement. The Chiefs and Broncos continue their rivalry and I think Dallas fits in nicely with those two. Arizona could easily be matched with west coast teams but the numbers don’t work until a team or two relocates. For now it’s a best case scenario for them as well as the other teams in this division. Bad news last, Dallas isn't in the east. In the next version I see them being in a better position in regards to distance.

Oakland and San Francisco see the fourth and fifth largest improvements in distance. Seattle improves vastly as well with San Diego also getting a large improvement. This should be an instant rivalry that has been long overdue.

Old average distance: 2,284 miles
New average distance: 1,348 miles
Four teams get to stay together, another four teams see minimal increases while the other 24 teams see a decrease of 1,328 miles on average.
The travel time is debatable for all of these teams. Do they save time or just money by using a bus instead of plane in some cases? Who knows but that’s not my reason for doing this.
It’s getting the fans in a position to support their team. Putting teams in a best case scenario in regards to the distance from their rivals will only help to increase ticket sales. By cutting the distance in half or better for most teams you’re drastically improving the chance that fans will travel more since it’s much closer.
If I’m a marketing guy for the league, I’m looking at this and suggesting that this is the way the NFL goes green. Everything about this specific realignment focuses on efficiency.
Many rivals were maintained but think about that. If some of the strongest rivals were maintained in this realignment then wouldn't it make sense that the strongest rivals are located near each? Since grouping teams near each other was the focus for this realignment then I think new rivals will develop faster then you think. If a rivalry was kept intact it was only because they were close in proximity.
That way of thinking would suggest that all of these divisions would see new rivalries born quickly due to close proximity. I honestly feel like this is the best but I know there are plenty of other rivalries you want me to maintain so that will be the focus on the next version, mixing this with more rivalries.
Here’s a map showing the divisions connected. It gives you a much better outlook on alternatives if any of you plan on moving some teams around. Before you suggest something just look at the divisions on the map and be sure to tell me who will replace the teams you're moving. Don’t just say "put the Cowboys with the Eagles, Giants and Redskins" because doing that isn’t easy and causes a domino effect.

I have version 2 pretty much ready but I’m interested in getting some feedback on rivalies you think should be added back. The next version you’ll see the average go up just a bit in a effort to balance out the distance among more teams in the northeast, southeast, north and south. I’m having fun with it.

Yeah I noticed that but I got the idea.
I am curious to see what happens when the team move as that would probably be the action that would force the NFL to realign for real. I think it would also help the whole rivalry thing if you could put all the Texas teams in the same conf and then throw in AZ or NO to top it off. I do somewhat like the idea of KC being with the Cowboys as the Chiefs started in Dallas.

good point with the Chiefs being from Dallas
Getting Dallas grouped with Houston as well as two other teams in that area will happen in version 3 once I start relocating. The next version will still keep the teams located where they are right now. I’m looking forward to version 3, it should fix lots of problems I see.

But San Antonio is actually working on a bid and a stadium offer for the NFL.
If it were up to me I would put one in SA and one in SLC and say screw LA. LA had their change and screwed it up. I guess if you move two teams and add two you could move Jax and Buff and then on top of SA and SLC add LA and Mexico City as thats another city the NFL has been said to be looking at.

that would work
getting into Canada is a concern too so Buffalo might just do that. Then move Jacksonville to either SA, SLC or LA, which ever makes more sense from a distance perspective. Which ever two don’t land Jax would get the expansion teams in version 4.

I also wounder if Detroit continues to crash and shrink if they will be able to support a team long term. Thats also a franchise where a change of scenery would do them well.

to make it smaller and hopefully save the city. Now thats some drastic shit right there. They have lost a full 50% of their population and its shrinking more every day.

This is pretty cool.
I don’t think that travel distance has any relevance on games. Traveling is easy when done correctly (I travel, muchly) but close proximity sure does wonders for rivalries ($$$).
And btw, as I’m still smarting from the Colts sneak out, any franchise relocation’s should leave the team name (& logo) with the city they left.

this should impact travel within the conference as well
I know on the surface we’re only talking about three games for each team but really if the divisions set up the right way it should impact all your conference games as well.

The easiest change to make to this version....
is the shift Dallas into the division with Houstonn New Orleans and Atlanta. Then move the Titans into the division with Cleveland, Cincy and Indy. St. Louis would then shift over with KC, Denver and Arizona. I had it like that at first and the next version will look more like that.

this is dumb.
it would mess everything in the nfl up. there are so many rivalries that wouldn’t stay in place, and alot of teams have rivalries against everyone in their division, not just one team.
Don't just look at the map and teams
read the post. Your comment makes it obvious that you didn’t read it since I covered that issue four times. The next version will add back many rivalries, this is just an efficient starting point.
What’s dumb are teams like the Fins and Cowboys playing teams located in the farthest northeast corner or the country or St. Louis traveling more then any west coast team.

or Indy playing who they play
then there are over 10 teams located closer to them compared to the teams they do play.
I’ll get some rivalries back but in my eyes there’s no reason for a team like the Fins to play teams from the northeast. Maybe it made sense one day but not now.
If the NFL is changing overtime then I think they can move some teams around as well. Change can be good in many situations as long as your not a sentimental fool.

no matter how I do it Miami will see huge changes
so this is to be expected on here. I bet if I suggested this to any of the teams that are keeping some rivalries that they’d like it.
The next version has the distances evened out a bit more allowing more rivalries to be kept. I’m sure more will like that version but it’s still going to have Miami facing three new teams so you’re going to get your fans that can’t imagine not playing the Pats and Jets every season.
I’m thinking after I get tired of this I’ll take the last version and try to build a schedule that allows out of division rivals to keep playing.

Nice Job
Nice work, quite alot of thought and quite alot of common sense. If i had any connections to Goodell i would hook you up or steal your idea and impress Roger myself. Sadly neither will happen, nice work all the same though
thanks

I added another map with the current divisions mapped out
Comparing the two should make it a little more obvious that changes are needed.

Wow that does show a HUGE difference in the two. I makes you wonder why the NFL has
not addressed this already. It looks like Miami, Dallas and especially St Louis are getting screwed.

Wow man, good work!
That had to have taken a lot of number crunching to figure all that stuff out. Good to know that somebody has the patience to do that kind of stuff, because I sure as hell don’t! LOL
I agree with Tex, I like the idea of naming the divisions after the coaching greats. I expected to see the Chicago/GreenBay/Detroit/Minnesota division named after Lombardi, but I see your point about that. Besides, he’s already got the Super Bowl trophy named after him, let someone else have some fame!! Although I will say, I was surprised that the division with Oakland was not named the John Madden division.
Regardless, good work man and rec’d!!

not only that but I personally don't put him in the company of the other coaches
If not for the 76 season he’d be looked at kind of like Marv Levy. All those guys were before my time so I’m hardly expert on the history of the game. I did look at a handful of list ranking the best coaches of all time which is how I decided on the names. Madden wasn’t listed.
Another idea was naming the divisions after influential owners like Hunt and Rooney.

Great post
But I personally disagree. Yes, teams have to travel, but that’s just part of the game. And, every team is going to have to travel anyway. The Patriots or the 49ers are still going to be scheduled against the Dolphins. Just has to happen.
The travel for Miami all the way to New England each year is negated by the fact that the Patriots also travel to Miami.
Plus, if you align the teams based solely on distance teams have to travel, that means that every time a team moves, you have to redo it. Otherwise, if Jacksonville does go to LA, you now have Miami having to play LA, which defeats the purpose of your realignment.
Now we are moving to a floating alignment, kinda like MLB is discussing. And, if I am a bad team, as an owner, why don’t I just move my team so I can get away from a team I think is going to go to the Super Bowl?
The NFL tried to fix its realignment a few years ago when Carolina and Jacksonville came into the league, but as you can see, there is no perfect way to align the divisions by geographical locations, and keep the history and traditions of the NFL.
I know you said you are going to add in rivalry considerations, but off the top, that means Miami HAS to travel to New York, because the Jets and Dolphins are such a huge rivalry. Then, do you consider the Bills and Dolphins a rivalry that has to be saved? I don’t, but I bet Bills fans, who hate the Dolphins, do.
Finally, part of the draw of having teams near each other not be in the same division is, it drives more teams into that market. Like Oakland and San Francisco. Now, AFC West and NFC West teams have to travel to that area every year. Under your alignment, Oakland would host Seattle, San Fran, and San Diego. San Fran? They would have Seattle, Oakland, and San Diego. Throw out the home field advantage for the San Fran/Oakland games. Now, do the bay area fans want to go to games twice to see the Chargers and twice to see the Seahawks? I don’t know.
I agree that there is some “interesting” divisional alignments like St. Louis in the NFC West, but when you look at how that happened, with LA moving to St. Louis, it does make sense. I think the NFL, the way it is, is abotu as good as it can get. It keeps rivalries together as much as possible, while trying to keep gepgraphical integrity as well.

You make a lot of good points and in the end realignment will never be this drastic but
when the league moves a couple of teams and then adds a couple more then there will have to be some level of realignment.

The travel for Miami all the way to New England each year is negated by the fact that the Patriots also travel to Miami.
Just because they both make the trip doesn’t make it fair. New England only has to make that trip down south once while the Dolphins travel to the North three times.
Plus, if you align the teams based solely on distance teams have to travel, that means that every time a team moves, you have to redo it. Otherwise, if Jacksonville does go to LA, you now have Miami having to play LA, which defeats the purpose of your realignment.
Since this has been neglected for so long it’s something that wouldn’t need to be done all the time since they rarely move or add teams. Version 1 and 2 are more of a best case scenario for the current teams and version 3 and 4 will be what it should look like by adding or moving teams. If it was up to me I wouldn’t realign the divisions until the changes were made that will be represented in the last version.
Now we are moving to a floating alignment, kinda like MLB is discussing. And, if I am a bad team, as an owner, why don’t I just move my team so I can get away from a team I think is going to go to the Super Bowl?
Moving isn’t that easy so I don’t really see that as an issue, especially since teams go from good to bad every year.
I think when I’m all done with this you’ll be surprised by how much we can keep intact while still making huge improvements.
Hopefully I can address the Fins/Jets Fins/Pats rivalry with some kind of scheduling magic that allows them to still play once a year but not be in the same division. We’ll see.

also in regards to the distance
this isn’t really about saving the teams money on travel. It’s about getting the fans in a position to travel to away divisional games. It’s also about increasing ticket sales. Look at it this way.
I’m sure there are more Fins fans located between here and Carolina and I’m sure we’d have a larger showing for away games because of that.
I doubt there are more Bucs fans down here compared to Jets fans but South Florida is a unique situation. In almost every other situation the home teams should attract more fans from away teams just due to the fact that they are located closer now.

For those who think it's the end of the world separating ourselves from the northeast
Lets not forget they realigned in 2002 which moved a few teams outside of their traditional division. Here’s an article to help remember the process they went through. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/football/nfl/news/2001/05/22/banks_realign/
Lets now look back at how the divisions looked before 2002.
AFC East
New England
Miami
NY Jets
Indianapolis
Buffalo
AFC Cental
Pittsburgh
Baltimore
Cleveland
Tennessee
Jacksonville
Cincinnati
AFC West
Oakland
Seattle
Denver
Kansas City
San Diego
NFC East
Philadelphia
Washington
NY Giants
Arizona
Dallas
NFC Central
Chicago
Green Bay
Tampa Bay
Minnesota
Detroit
NFC West
St. Louis
San Francisco
New Orleans
Atlanta
Carolina
Indy seems to be doing okay after leaving the AFC East, I’m sure the Dolphins would as well.

hahaha ok this is going to sound really dorky
and a lot like my stats professor, but when you are showing data like this it’s not wise to just show the average of all the data but also show the mode and median as well…the average can be severely affected by extreme outliers and it not always (or even usually) the best type of measurement to use….you can’t imagine how many times i heard this last semester
and i agree the best rivalries are usually between teams that are in close proximity to each other, with rare exceptions, Lakers and Celtics being one…but look at college how the college divisions are aligned…they are for the most part aligned by location and the closer the schools are too each other the more heated the rivalries are…IMO it because the closer the teams are to each other geographically the closer their fans of each team is, which allows them to interact more (although with the advent of the internet it is much easier to interact with anyone around the world, but forget about the internet for now), which in turn allows for the rivalry to get more and more heated. So am i liking this new division format you have proposed and can absolutely stand behind it…oh and it would be awesome if a correlation was done to see if there is any weight behind the closeness of rivals and the “heat” in the rivalry…just saying lol

you're completely right in regards to the mode and median...
but I’m sure your journalism professor would tell you to keep you audience in mind as well, this isn’t exactly a Forensic Science blog, lol.
I guess by the second version the people reading it will know what they’re looking at so I’ll add in the mode and median, you are completely right.
I’m also going to take the franchise value in consideration as well as owner’s net worth. I’m not sure if I’ll spread them out or group them together by highest or lowest but I do want to try and make it as even a playing ground as possible from all angles. If you think of anything else let me know.

hahaha well if i took journalism i would prob know to keep my audience in mind lol
all i know is that my stats prof drilled into us that the average is usually not sufficient and to always include median and mode lol
haha you are wayyy ahead of me lol, i didn’t even think of all that other shit, i only thought to realign based on location…make it east/west, scrap these made up conferences (AFC/NFC) and just have the 4 teams closest to each other be in the same division

by the fourth version there will be 36 teams
I plan on reworking the playoffs as`well as even the number of divisions there are. Maybe 12 three team divisions and set it up so that the rivals are still playing each other on a yearly basis. I’m not sure how I’ll do that but after version 4 of the realignment I’ll go onto the other issues that realignment created in 2002 and try and avoid them the next time around.

interesting though
I’m not sure how it would work, just kind of thinking out loud.
Think about the numbers going up to 36. The next stop on the road to even divisions and teams in each division is 40 which I wouldn’t dare get into. 12 three team divisions is the only thing I’m seeing make sense at 36. 34 doesn’t even make sense to me when breaking it up.

Our division is way too easy
We’d be the frigging Colts, playing a schedule like that every year. then our fans would start to get douchey, and KSK would give us a horrible nickname.

really, because last I checked Tampa and Carolina have been to a SB a lot more recently then us
Tampa might be on the downside right now but Carolina has a tough team that could easily bounce back hard real fast. Jacksonville has a good team as well so I don’t really see how you’re assuming we would run over them.
In fact Carolina finished better then us last year and Jax matched us at 7-9.
I’ll convince you sooner or later.
