Eric Berry Vs Earl Thomas
As much as I wanted Eric Berry, I am now sold that Earl Thomas is a better fit for the Dolphins. Before I start Berry is a great player and Im not taking anything from that. What I did is look at his availability and asked myself what if he's not there and thats when I was sold on Thomas.
Athletically they are both equally impressive, Berry being 4houndreds of a second faster and Thomas out benching Berry by 2 reps maybe stronger.
Both guys are smart ballhawks who make big plays but Berry is a much better tackler, however Berry is a 3yr player and Thomas 2yr. Whose to say given another yr in college he doesnt get better in that department he did bulk up 10lbs just for the combine.
The thing that sold me on Thomas was the Conference, usually a disadvantage when messing with the SEC. Playing in the PASS happy Big 12 Thomas has to deal with OU, Oklahoma st, Texas Tech, Missouri and his own team in practice. With the front seven shoring up maybe we can live without two run stopping safeties. Maybe having Thomas who is used to extensively roaming the secondary will turn the tide in the one sided war on Miami's secondary.

Id be excited as hell to land either one
Question is, do you think Thomas will be there at 12?

Absolutely
I could see Thomas lasting til 15 minimum if we don’t grab him.
I don’t want that to be the case. Bring him here.

I hope so
Hopefully CB Haden improves his stock, we dont want people who look at a possible CB fix swooping in seeing Thomas as a possibility.

If Berry is available, he is a MUST pick. However, I agree with you on Thomas.
I think that if Berry is off the board, then it comes down to 2 players; Earl Thomas and Dan Williams. To me, I think if we trade back a few picks to, let’s say, 16-20 we can still land one of the those two.

Unlikely but Possible
If we trade down to 16-20 players like Kindle, Graham and Weatherspoon will get into consideration.
wow you got it mixed up
the sec is one of if not the toughest division in college football also.. Berry is versatile and is a hitter earl thomas doesnt have the same physical stature as berry to aid in run support to go along with coverage skills

He didn't say the Big 12 was a better conference.
He said they are more of a pass happy conference. Which may mean it is a little tougher on DB’s going against a QB like Bradford rather than a QB like Tebow.
To go along with tonyy's comment and okokokaay's post
It won’t be an absolute necessity for our FS to be a run-stopper. We have Davis with plus skills against the run, an improved linebacking corps already just with Dansby’s arrival, and we have three solid guys down on the line.

We do need a ballhawk.
And as good a tackler (and underrated, perhaps) as Yeremiah Bell is, he isn’t a ballhawk. Smith may turn into one, but as of now, he isn’t one, either. Davis is showing signs of great potential there, but we need one true pass-picking ballhawk.
I see that as being Earl Thomas this year.

Right now, Berry and Thomas have the highest draft value this team has at #12 based on team need and BPA.
Though Dez Bryant and Dan Williams would have very good value, also. I’d be happy with any of those 4 at this point. Anyone else and I’ll be pissed.
I'd gladly take either of them
But since it’s highly unlikely Berry’s draft stock takes a tumble, I am paying more attention to Thomas.

Thomas is a little better in coverage/ball hawking; Berry is better in the run game.
If you require your FS to often play in the box, you’d want Berry. If you’re looking for a player who’s going to ball hawk like Ed Reed, Thomas is the better bet. Thomas is also great in man coverage.
For a M. Nolan D, I’d place a slight preference on E. Thomas, but would be thrilled with either.

I’m not saying Berry isn’t really good in coverage. I’m saying Thomas is better. It wouldn’t be a huge compliment to Thomas if Berry weren’t also very good. Berry can play some corner; before Thomas weighed in at 208, a lot of people were projecting him as the 2nd best CB in the draft. He also has better feet and hips than Berry.
