The Draft

I think we're all excited about the draft.  I just want your guys opinions on what to do in the first round. I'm one of those guys that would be happy drafting Rolando McClain from Alabama with the 12th pick. At the same time if we traded up for Dez Bryant, I wouldn't complain either depending on what we give up for it. He's not a problem in the locker room (at least I think), even though some people say he is. Also CJ Spiller, would be great too. What are your thoughts?

Star-divide

I also would like to mention from what Dolphins games I saw (one of few problems of living in Pennylvania):

I think our defense is fixable. I really like Langford and Merling. I feel they will improve and the pass rush will only improve with Wake getting more downs at OLB. I also know that Gibril Wilson may have been the reason for... well all of our losses, but I still like what he's done else where. If we can't get rid of him because of his contract I think he has the ability to improve, no need to go crazy and draft a safety, again I haven't watched every game this year, and I know people are on his back for his horride play, but people can improve and thats honestly the worst case scenario- Gibril improving, Sparano will be on his ass all summer if he can't get rid of him.

I also witnessed this season a rather terrible offense. We must have 4 slot receivers. Our running game is great, but I think a number one receiver will open up Bess, and maybe, just maybe help Ginn get open downfield. At this point I'll take any progress from Ginn. I do think a true number one receiver will really help out this team. That's why I'm in no way opposed to getting Dez Bryant. Also with Ronnie's contract either ending this year or 2010 (depending on the salary cap situation), and Ricky leaving after 2010, CJ Spiller would also be incredibly intriguing.

Again what are your thoughts? I'm no expert, and I know the Gibril comment will spark some anger, please keep it clean guys. Thanks.

No way the Fins value Spiller or Dez Bryant over Rolando McClain.

I think it’s more like:

•Eric Berry, S (Not saying he’ll be there. But if he were to slip into the a fall to us, I think he’d without question be the pick.)
• Rolando McClain, ILB (More Likely.)
• Joe Haden, CB (We can always move Sean Smith to FS. Haden at 12 would be just too much value for Parcells to pass up on. Can you imagine a Defensive back field featuring Joe Haden, Vontae Davis, Sean Smith, and Yermiah Bell for the next 4 years!)
•Bryant, WR
•Trade Back in the round (pick up an extra 2nd rounder maybe.)
•Dan Williams, NT
•Brandon Graham

I think the fans like C.J. Spiller alot more than the Fins front office does. There’s too many needs to fill for Fins to fill first before they can start going with casualty picks in the first round.

How do you know that moving Sean Smith to FS will be so effortless? Thats a tough move. Honestly he was the better corner than Vontea, and he has height, something that most corners don’t possess. Vontea’s physical style of play makes a better move for FS.

Still attempting to move a number 2 pick to a position he’s never played before is too risky. He could be absolutly terrible, and have hurt his progression as a CB. I don’t think we need to mess with the secondary at all.

by wolski-08 on Feb 8, 2010 11:53 PM EST up reply actions

He played FS at Utah. Shouldn't be too difficult when he already knows the position well.

I’m not worried at all about Smith transitioning to safety if needed.

Joe Haden is one of the top 5 players in this years draft. Parcells won't pass on him even if he drafted two CB's early last year.

Although I do agree that Vontae is more agressive. He’d be great against the run. But Sean Smith would be much better in coverage, reading the QB’s eyes and such. We already have a run supporting safety. His name is Yeremiah Bell.

????

Are you really comparing my thinking of Haden to drafting a punter? You sound ridiculous. You’re acting as if I’m reaching on a player. Haden is a top 5 player and a top 10 prospect. I’m not reaching, I’m taking the best player available. And it would fill a need because we can move SEAN SMITH (Played FS in college), VONTAE DAVIS (Would be great against the run and is definitely considered a playmaker), or WILL ALLEN (On the decline, a switch to FS could revive his career). Haden can only help our team. How would he hurt us.

How dare you comparing me liking Haden to drafting a punter early. That’s a stupid.

lol I like how you just want to convert everyone to a Free Safety. Its like saying “Anybody but Gibril!” sorry I just got a laugh out of it

by wolski-08 on Feb 9, 2010 12:34 AM EST up reply actions

What is wrong with Chris Clemens????

I think he beats out Gibril this year anyway…. He has all the tools and he was a steal for us in the 6th round. Time will show not only did we upgrade both CBs, but we also upgraded FS. Let the kid beat out Gibril this season.Don’t spend another pick on secondary when it is going to be one of our strengths going forward. Now we need a NT, LBs(2 ILBs and one OLB if we can fill our other needs), a #1 WR, and a TE(unless Fasano or Haynos can make some major strides this year and be a go to type of player).

by Jason Scott_90 on Feb 9, 2010 5:08 AM EST up reply actions

I honestly think Chris Clemons is going to be a SS.

I always thought he’d be the successor to Yeremiah Bell.

No

Smith didn’t play FS at Utah, and he’d make a terrible FS in the NFL.

Spiller and Bryant are both much better players than McClain.

And, it’s ridiculous to say that Spiller is a casual (assuming that’s what you were trying to say – rather than “casualty”) pick.

1: He’s one of the three best players in the draft.
2. What’s our current RB situation? Brown coming off of another major injury and Ricky coming off of a wilting fumble-fest of a last few games. Yeah, don’t worry about RB. We have it on lock.
3. Spikes fits better in Nolan’s D than does McClain.

We wake & blunder on, / wiser, on the whole, / but not more accurate.

- John Berryman from THE DREAM SONGS #263

by sister_ray on Feb 9, 2010 12:30 AM EST up reply actions

Ya you're right, I meant Casual. And yes, RB will be a big need after this season with Ricky gone and Ronnie entering free agency (And 30 years old).

But we have more pressing needs now! We can’t pass on Rolando McClain for another RB. Yes, Spiller can be an explosive player on offense, but McClain have the same impact on defense! And he’d be the leader of our D for the next 10 years! You can’t pass up on McClain. Besides, this is a very deep RB class. You can get your RB of the future in the 2nd and 3rd rounds. We have more pressing needs at the moment than RB. No one was complaining until Ronnie got hurt. You do realize that drafting Spiller would make our 1st round pick a 3rd string RB until after next year right?

Yes we need a #1. Is Bryant the guy? He could be, but it might take a couple of years. I think the triad has something up their sleeves. The idea would be that he would eventually start opposite Vontae

and we would have 2 bookend CBs, fast, big play type hard hitting CBs, Haden is really like a clone of Vontae, 5’11" 190lbs, low 4.4s, known for his runsupport and big plays.

I say take Dez but no trade ...

There are many things that could show what this team is thinking.

#1. FA will show what our true intentions are. I can see us picking up a NT (either resignign Ferg or someone new) and ILB .. Fujita is my bet on this one becuase of the Dallas connection. If we don’t do either of these we will most def go after McClain or someone like Dan Williams.

This will most likely leave us with a couple of openings in the playmakers needed area so that is why I think we go either Spiller or Dez with the 1st pick. One of them will be there at #12. If McClain does drop I still see us taking him but I wouldn’t be uspet if we did go after a true game changer on offense instead. I think there are lots of options in the following rounds to address the ILB spot while true playmakers don’t come around everyday.

What do you guys think about Sean Weatherspoon playing inside in our 3-4 defense (If he was to gain about 5-10 Ibs of muscle)?

He’s good all around, especially in coverage. I really like him. I think that if McClain is off the board, Weatherspoon is the next best 3-4 ILB. I know the Dolphins coaching staff talked to him at the Senior Bowl about him possibly playing inside in a 3-4. If McClain is taken, I’d like to see them trade back in the round and nab him (and also pick up some extra draft picks). Or maybe he’ll fall to us in round 2 (doubtful)? What do you guys think?

i think what it will boil down to is

That there is enough talent at lb in this draft in the 2nd and 3rd rounds that the team will spend a 1st on best talent available (spiller or haden etc ) if not i think were going to trade down, i would be ok if they picked mclain just dont think hell fall to us

Perfect Scenario would be

1st- Rolando McClain
2nd- Ryan Matthews
3rd- Either trade this pick straight up or package it with a future 4th or 5th to get Anquan Boldin. Also, we could attempt to move one of our receivers and this pick for possibly Brandon Marshall?

If BM is available for a 3rd it would be dumb to not get him.

Character issues aside, he can flat out play with the best of them. period.

Two things-

One, there is a rumor now that he may not be leaving Denver as both sides may have changed their positions. This of course may just be that. A rumor.

Two, there is no way that he gets out of Denver for that little. There will be more than one team after him if hes but on the trading block so someone will have to give up at least a first round pick.

I don't like it

we get two non-impact players in the first 2 rounds. Not a fan. I don’t like McClain much at all, unless we are picking around 20.. Mathews won’t be very good IMO. I don’t like the lack of leg drive when he’s hit. And I don’t like the lack of a real burst into the hole. He’s not gonna break many tackles and he’s not gonna have super-gaping holes to run through that hide his negatives.

Ryan Mathews Again Nicky

Watch the video. All Fresno State does is run up the middle. As a fan of the team it gets kinda old. After about the 4th game of the season teams just put 8 in the box and dared them to throw.

I've seen enough of him to be confident in my opinion of him

this video confirms how I feel. Every player that gets a shoulder on him and actually attempts to make a real tackle takes him down. He runs way too high. And that was a highlight tape. One play that sticks in my mind is when he was stopped on 4th and goal in the Bowl game. Instead of lowering his shoulder and powering his way into the endzone, he goes airborne like a salmon and gets stuffed. Weak run, in the biggest moment of his team’s season. He’s a decent back, but I don’t think he’s any better than our own Lex Hilliard. We are gonna disagree about him because you’re a fan of him and I’m not, but I’m just telling you what I see from him.

Tough Call

I’m a fan of Football. I’ll defend solid play. Just like when Fresno State Played USC and Reggie Bush made that now famous cut back run. That sealed the Heismen for him. That’s a play. Mathews has got that it quality. I’ve watched enough football and I played enough football. One play does not define a player. Watched enough of T. Ginn in college to know what kind of player he was to and that is the same player we got today. Your pick is Spiller and I would agree he is the better back. Spiller might even be a better receiver than most of our current receivers. You’ve seen alot of Spiller because he’s played well against the U. If we pick Spiller, our defense better have been shored up in F/A. or through multiple picks in the draft. You coach football and there one thing I know and that is if my offense puts up 28 or more points and we still lose the game. I’ve got a problem with my defense. The NFL rules are geared toward offense now days though so maybe the game has past me by. Hillard is a solid back he just needs to hold onto the ball. Mathews had close to 500 carries with 3 fumble if I’m not mistaken. If he is as good I think is. The Patriots will pick him and barring injury we will get to see him often.
