Dolphin Mock Drafts Around the 'Net, 2/26 Edition
[Reminder: Vote for us in the "BOB" awards - particularly in the "best overall blog" category. Voting ends on Monday.]
On Saturday workouts will get underway in Indianapolis at the 2010 NFL Scouting Combine. So this is the final look at some mock drafts prior to the Combine. It'll be interesting to see how this week's edition compares with next week's version. Will the Combine change it up? Free agency also kicks off in a week - and that could also have a big impact on these various mock drafts.
Without further ado, let's get to the mocks...

Trends
Rolando McClain - 20% (-)
Sergio Kindle - 17% (+)
Jason Pierre-Paul - 17% (+)
Dez Bryant - 15% (+)
Brandon Graham - 5% (+)
Dan Williams - 5% (+)
C.J. Spiller - 5% (-)
As you can see above, compared to last week McClain is trending down. Perhaps a lot of people believe one of two things - either they feel like Miami will sign Karlos Dansby and then not have as much of a need for McClain or they believe that Miami's need at OLB exceeds their need at ILB.
The C.J. Spiller bandwagon also took a little bit of a nose dive this week. But that could all change if/when Spiller runs a blazing 40 time this weekend. The Brandon Graham thing I still don't get, however. I just don't see this kid as top 15 material. I think you can get comparable talent (Jerry Hughes, for example) in round two.
As always, your thoughts below...

He didn't need coaching. He needs a little bit of speed.
Say what you want about Saban, but the man can coach( only in the NCAA of course). I’m all for Rolando McClain. I’m not trying to convince anyone of what the man can do. We’ll see how the draft plays out and I’ll just say if Miami drafts Ro’ then I don’t think anyone will be disappointed come September.
It's better to keep your mouth shut and make people think your dumb, then to open it and remove all doubt..

MIAMI !
SIGN DANSBY! and im interested to see what miami will do if we sign dansby.it deffinitly opens up the draft for us. i think the best option then would be to draft either dez bryant or jason pierre-paul. but i think another interesting option would be to trade up and get eric berry. word is detriot wants to trade down. i doubt miami would make a big move like that though. especially since our gm came out and defended gibril wilson.
True our Coaching staff will prorbaly not trade up but hey you never know
someone highlighted that in year 3 is when you try to become a legitimate championship team and in order to do that you have to make big moves, possibly we might do it but i rather trade down

true
just think next year having karlos dansby/sean smith/vonte davis/yerimiah bell/a more experianced camron wake/and eric berry! with mike nolan running the D! thats enough to get me excited! the best part was wilsons name not being mentioned in there! lol.
or maybe we could get A. Rolle from the cards? to replace wilson. the only thing i know is miami needs to add some playmakers! on offense and defense
Sunday kickoff and draft zoo are nice picks for us i like them but i don't like the Bryant pick i heard he is overweight

seems to slow down your 40 time and that’s not good when you aren’t exactly blazing past college DB’s, much less guys in the pros
FA/Draft
F.A. Dansby, A. Rolle
Draft 1st – Get TOP OLB or trade down and get Grahm, hopfully get an extra 2nd or 3rd trading down
Draft 2nd D. Thomas WR Gtech…watch this kid play..he is a man among boys with a garbage passing qb. OFten played in single receiver formations so even though it was an option team, saftey and coverage could usually focus exclusivley on Thomas. He is big. strong and fast, great balance, runs smooth and has incredible hands. What more can you ask for in a WR? BFD that he is raw coming out route wise. teach him.
3rd TE B. Gradkowski TE Arizona /D. McCLuster Ole Mss RB (either one can make offense much more dynamic.
3rd By using the trade down in round 1 Top NT
4th Top ILB
6th (2) and 7th rounds
OL and ST depth
Nice Choices But....
You wont get a Top NT after the 2nd round (Unless Torrell Troup falls that far and you consider him a TOP NT). Kade Weston would be a 6th, 7th, or UFA option but he would have to rise up to his potential to be the answer (he could likely replace Soliai though).

Yeah I know what you mean…but when I say TOP, I mean top remaining at that position. Outside Vince Wilfork who I know was highly touted coming out of school, which other NT’s were Day 1 picks? I really don’t know, were the Haynesworths Ryan Pickets and Casey Hamptons all highly sought out players prior to the draft. I feel like its a crap shoot but I could be wrong.

because he actually makes plays. Im sure he gets beat deep sometimes and fucks up in coverages or misses tackles like anyone else, but he will make plays. Our safety did not make one single play that I can recall this entire season. It takes one play in one game to change that game around. And if you change one game, that can change the whole season. I still wonder about that ricky williams wildcat against buffalo where he threw an int on the one fucking yard line. How fucking stupid of a play call. Miami was up a score, about to go for the throat and put that game away early like we had the last 3 or four meetings against the bills, instead coaches do what coaches do and out smart themselves. Put them back in the game and we all know how that game and season ended. This has nothing to do with Rolle but fuck that pisses me off. What a stupid fucking play call. We were running the ball 5, 7, 9 yards a crack. Get to the 1 yd line and let ricky “tiny hands” williams throw the fucking football in the middle of the field nonetheless. I hate coaches.

I try to avoid get attached to any player pre draft
because it stinks to have a crush on a player who you see 2x a year… (for me every time i see WW playing for the patsies i just #$@( Cam and his family too)… but if they don’t get a troubled WR in the first round, i’m pulling for getting one in the second… they have the wrong williams up there… give me Mike in the 2nd.
The Future is now, stop the bandwagon and lets get the Henne train rollin, as we all hope that the 14th dwarf is the real prince charming.
As I've said before, I think the road to the playoffs starts with us signing Dansby
Assuming Dansby’s in Miami, I’d like to trade down and nab Dan Williams, who’s looking pretty good after the NT free agent market took a complete dump this week.
McClain’s still my No.1 prospect, though. I have a hard time believing Parcells would pass on him.

i like d. williams, but at the number 12 pick…..
they need to hire a new draft analyst
New era scouting has an interesting mockup
Earl Thomas at 12th pick would be a nice pick up, the guy is similar to Berry but really has only one full year of starting. His really shooting up draft boards, some people even rate him higher then Berry.
Just as long as we get Cam Thomas, I'm happy

…and why do I care? Some of these people must have already forgotten the 09 draft, and who we took in the first 2 rounds.
Anyway…assuming we do sign Dansby, why not go after Spiller? I doubt Dez falls to us unless Denver decides to go in a different direction.
I guess it Dansby signs, I’ll hop on the Spiller bandwagon. If not, it’s still McClain for me.
Eddie V
kyle wilson wouldn't be bad
from boise state, great punt returner, quick, hits hard, solid cornerback. could convert to FS pretty well. I’ve seen him play alot and he was solid. seemed to play his best in big games like against oregon and TCU this past year which i think holds a bit more stock than games against WAC receivers which he played well, but they honestly, who cares, because the WAC is pretty weak.
According to CBS “draft experts”
“The 2008-09 All-American has a penchant for showing up big in the biggest games, including posting two key interceptions in Boise State’s win in 2008 at Oregon, a team-high 10 tackles against Oklahoma in the Broncos’ 43-42 victory over heavily favored Oklahoma in the 2007 Fiesta Bowl, and a sack and forced fumble in the upset victory over TCU in the 2010 Fiesta Bowl.
Read & React: Good anticipatory and reaction skills. Has the agility to mirror the receiver’s breaks and likes to sneak a peek at the quarterback in an attempt to get a break on the ball.
Man Coverage: Good straight-line speed and the agility to stick with receivers throughout a route. Smooth hip turn. Doesn’t lose speed in his transition. Competitive, but can be beaten by bigger, more physical receivers. Very good ball skills.
Zone Coverage: Has a low, tight backpedal. Good speed to maintain cushion. Quick feet to change direction efficiently and locates the ball quickly with a closing burst.
Closing/Recovery: Aggressive defender who will bait the quarterback in zone coverage and can break on the ball quickly to make the interception. Times leaps well and can snatch the pass outside of his frame. Can make the first defender miss as a returner and is an elusive runner with good vision. Sets up his blocks well and has the burst to squeeze through gaps and the breakaway speed to go the distance.
Run Support: Plays with a cover corner mentality and rarely involves himself in run support.

McClain starts his drop in the overall prospect rankings this weekend.
I have seen a lot of reports say that he is going to run in the 4.7 or 4.8 range. If that is the case, he drops to the end of the 1st round or the beginning of the 2nd. If he runs sub 4.7, he will probably drop to late teens or early 20’s. If he runs sub 4.5, then he stays where he is (Patrick Willis ran a 4.49 and was drafted #11). My bet is that he runs in the 4.7 or 4.8 range and then he drops bigtime.
Let's get offensive this offseason!
"It is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing." MACBETH
on tape...
he sure looks like he’s running 4.7 or 4.8. Or even if he does run a 4.6 or better in shorts, he seems slow in pads, especially in sideline-to-sideline pursuit.
Anyway, come March 5th I think all the mock drafts may be adjusting their picks for the fins, assuming Karlos Dansby comes on board.
I really am intrigued with the Outside Linebacker picks...
… in the the second and third rounds with Koa Misi and George Selvie.
Jerry Hughes is known and may be a late or early second round pick, but these two are fast and make plays. Reminding me, with their profile, of how JT was coming out of college.
I’m also pleased with how much Sergio Kindle is named in the first pick for the Dolphins.

But don't you think...
Kindle is a late-teen/early 20’s grade, or even maybe a 2nd rounder? Seems a tad high to get him at 12. I’d trade down and nab a 2nd or 3rd rounder from someone. The Giants, if they lose out on Dansby to us, would be a good candidate at 15, even if that means scooping up 1 additional pick somewhere. We can still get Kindle there, if not later, IMO.

I like your thinking
If we could trade down to the Giants for anything (and no one else is interested), I’d do it for their third or their fourth round pick. Hell, I would do it even for their fifth round pick because somebody very talented will be there for us at #15.

which leads us to the classic question of....
need vs. BPA. as a 7-9 team hoping to make the playoffs.
In general I tend to think most teams try to draft the best guy available and use FA/trades to address needs. But that depends on where you draft, which of course depends on your performance. Teams like NE, Indy, and Pittsburgh have been pretty consistent BPA draft strategy but then they are also consistent playoff teams.

Every year I like a player thats slotted around our spot…all the way back to Phillip Rivers…then come combine time they totally move up outta reach. Dex wont be at the combine…but i cant see the top WR lasting to 12…
Spiller is bout to blow minds. He is redic fast…and his hands are second to none. hes also the best return man in the draft IMO.
I feel like Dansby is a guy Parcells would like….and the rumors are making it seem even more likely…I hope we get him….draft a offensive playmaker…then go after defensive steals at NT and S.

Graham is a much better talent than McClain. If Graham isn’t top 15 talent, McClain isn’t top 30 talent. Also, Mayock actually listed McClain as his 17th best prospect. I think he was being generous.
Earl Thomas is in my top 3 players I want at 12. The others are Berry and an OLB to be named later (after the combine).
We wake & blunder on, / wiser, on the whole, / but not more accurate.

Sergio Kindle
Mc Clain is better suited as a MIKE LB. Kindle gives us what we need and that is a pass rusher at OLB. I also agree that Dansby would really help us. In the 2nd rd, I see us going after a WR. Thomas, Tate, Gilyard, etc. could be a good pick. In the 3rd round, I see us drafting a NT and then OG in the 4th.
