Mardy Gilyard anybody????

I made a post a couple months back about Mardy Gilyard and his highlights , but now I'm making one about why we have a realistic chance of getting him. Let's start off with some info:

Name: Mardy Gilyard

Height: 6-1

Weight: 187.lbs

Age:23

Class: Senior

Career Stats:

Receptions: 204

Yards: 3,003

TD's: 25

More after the jump...

C4s_usfcover103108_44216c_medium

Star-divide

Now the first thing that gets people is his weight, but these other players are near that weight:

  1. Percy Harvin: 184 lbs
  2. Steve Smith: 185 lbs
  3. Desean Jackson: 175 lbs
  4. Ted Ginn Jr.: 180 lbs
  5. Chad Ochocinco: 192 lbs
  6. Davone Bess: 190 lbs

By no stretch am I saying that Mardy Gilyard is the next Ted Ginn Jr. because he's not, people have been comparing him to Percy Harvin, Chad OchoCinco, and Desean Jackson. There is a very good chance that he falls to the second round where if we don't get Dez Bryant it will be nice to get Mardy. Reasons of why we might get Mardy Gilyard:

  1. At the Senior Bowl, Tony Sparano and CO. asked him many questions and asked him the key question: Will you be comfortable playing in a big city like Miami? Now this ain't no prove that were going to draft him but ti's getting somewhere.
  2. Bill Parcells likes 4 year players and Mardy Gilyard is that, he is also not a trouble maker and from what I know doesn't get injured much.
  3. He murdered the south defense and had incredible numbers: 5 receptions/103 yards/(20.6 yards per catch average). That's pretty dam good.
  4. He also played 6 or 7 teams int he top 25 in College Football and still produced quiet well.

People think he might go in the first ahead of Dez Bryant but it all depends on the combine where Mardy Gilyard very well could destroy as well as he is a faster than Chad OchoCinco when he was in the combine:

OchoCinco's time: 4.54

Gillyard's time: 4.51

If you saw him in the Senior Bowl you know what this kid could do he's a nightmare as he could catch really well, he's good at creating separation, and is very elusive. He could also return punts and kicks. Only bad thing about him is his Route Running and his strength but this could all be worked on. My ideal draft will be:

  1. CJ Spiller at #12 or trade down and get Sean Weatherspoon
  2. Mardy Gillyard
  3. Cam Thomas or Micah Johnson
  4. Jimmy Graham
  5. Darryl Sharpton

Most Likely to happen:

  1. Brandon Graham
  2. Darryl Washington
  3. Andre Roberts
  4. Jimmy Graham
  5. Carlton Mitchell or Darryl Sharpton

Either one is fine with me as i like all three Andre Roberts, Carlton Mitchell, and Mardy Gilyard.

Here are what Scouting reports are saying of him:

  1. strengths: - Super smooth athlete - Good height - Exceptionally quick - Fast with excellent acceleration - Explosive with a burst - Terrific feet and change of direction skills - Soft, reliable hands - Nice body control and ball skills - Extremely elusive and a real terror in space - Superb vision - Shows the ability to separate - Tough and not afraid to work the middle - Experienced - Productive - Also a fantastic return man.
  2. Weaknesses - Needs to add weight and bulk up - Isn't real strong - Not a polished route runner - Struggles to beat the jam - Won't really climb the ladder - Has lapses in concentration at times - Isn't necessarily a vertical threat - Despite giving solid effort is just an average blocker at best - Might have some character issues - Durability is a concern www.draftcountdown.com
  1. It is his lack of size that is keeping Gilyard off the national radar as far as the NFL is concerned. He is only 6-1 and a mere 187 pounds, but nobody can stop him anyway. Through seven games in the 2009 campaign, Gilyard has racked up 47 receptions for 674 yards and eight touchdowns. He has also returned a majority of the kick-offs and punts, and returned a punt for a touchdown. Somebody will fall in love with Gilyard's elusiveness and speed. His size will drop him down a bit, but Gilyard is a very productive player who can do a lot for any offense. On a team that will spread out Gilyard and get him the ball with a little space to operate, he will be very good. www.fftoolbox.com

Strengths: * Great production * One of the best kick returners I’ve ever seen * Shows up big in big games * Great speed * Excellent elusiveness * Good vision after the catch * Operates well in space * Elite quickness * Good Senior Bowl showing

Weaknesses * Slight frame * Off-field concerns after missing 2006 season due to academics * Can get muscled around by bigger DBs * Lacks elite size * Carries some mental risks after starting career at cornerback * Needs to improve precision route-running www.draftzoo.com

For your Information i tried the Block Quotes but it was so confusing that i ended up having like 20 boxes open so instead i made the links.

Here are what people are saying:

"THis guy is hands down the best talent at WR in this draft class, but he'll get looked over because he lacks the size pro scout look for but i have two words for that, DESEAN JACKSON, he's a slightly slower but slightly thicker version of Jackson. A some GM is going to regret passing on him in the first round. He's no question a first round talent but like Jackson he'll slip to the second round. Top 10 talent!"

"Same size and ability as Chad Johnson, love his talent"

"teams will sleep on him
will be a steal for someone
one of my favorite players in college
i see some of the desean jackson comparisons but jacksons skinnier and a lil faster"

"Late second round pick. Reminds me a lot of Percy Harvin only taller with better hands. Needs to work on his routes but that should not be a problem when he starts working with NFL coaches. Speed is fantastic, he can make anyone miss in the open field. He is a sleeper because he was off the radar playing for Cincinatti. Could turn into a very solid number 2 receiver."

Here are his highlights:

That's all leave your thoughts!!!

well done

I like both your drafts would rather the 1st one but would still be very happy with the 2nd

he looks good

i wouldnt mind a receiving core that consists of Gilyard opp Hatrline slot Bess and rotate cammy and ginn (or trade him away)

i think he is one of the few people in the draft that i would like to pick up

do you kno if he returns punts?

I really like Gilyard

I have had Gilyard on my radar since the 2009 Orange Bowl. I think the guy is a 1st round talent but I agree that he will probably fall to the 2nd round. Personally I do not see the Percy Harvin comparison, but I think the Ochocinco comparison is much closer.

Flat out this guy is a playmaker as a WR and returner. But sadly he doesn’t seem to give the effort in practice and one thing that has been very important to our coaching staff is that you perform well in practice. That was the biggest knock on him during senior bowl week. But as you pointed out he performed extremely well during the game. I don’t think he will be a Dolphin but I do hope I’m wrong.

I think he looks like another Devone Bess

I don’t think there is much #1 Potential. We need someone who is big, fast, and can command double teams. I don’t feel this is the guy.

Ronnie Brown is the man

What? first of all he's supposed to runa 4.45 at the combine probrbaly lower, secondly

we don’t need a big physical reciever we want one, what we need is a Play maker and everybody else says it and that’s what he is a play maker.

If we are able to get Boldin

Do we still have a need to get a guy like this?

by esco6781 on Feb 21, 2010 9:41 PM EST reply actions

Also, I dont really want to pick him with our first pick in the 2nd either

If we can con some other team into giving us their 2nd, then sure why not.

Sure, why not i mean Boldin is old we might as well develope him

That is true,

but there is no need to run off the cliff with the rest of the lemmings, take a player where you think he should go, not where you think you can get him.

I think he’s a nice little WR, but we have guys like this, no need to reach for him IMO.

No thanks

He’s fun to watch, and no doubt he’s really elusive and great in the open field. But, if we’re going to invest something as high as a 1st to a 3rd round pick, I want a big physical guy like Demaryius Thomas or Dez Bryant.

It's 2010 - do the smart thing. Draft Myron Rolle.

You're right

I don’t mean we should draft Thomas just because he’s big, because obviously there are other things that are more important than just size. I’m just suggesting that I would rather invest a pick that high into something we don’t have, which is a big-bodied physical receiver (assuming we use that pick on WR).

He really isn't that slow. His routes may be questionable though.
Thomas is 6-foot-3, 227 pounds and recently ran a verified 4.38 in the 40-yard dash, which was filmed and will be sent to every team in the league. Thomas led the Atlantic Coast Conference with 1,154 receiving yards last season.

Ginn ran a 4.38 recovering from a broken ankle

just remember lefty's post earlier

We averaged over 24 points a game last year, so unless we get an impact player (spiller or Bryant) or a tight end in like the 4th (jimmy graham anyone) i really see us going straight up defense this draft

I think we should

draft lb/nt in the first 2 rounds. I wouldnt mind Gilyard in the 3rd but Id rather get Micah. If we do, what do you guys think about Danario Alexander in the 4th? I know the injury history is VERY scary but in the 4th it might be worth the risk. Hes 6’5’’, 215lbs and runs somewhere around 4.45 I think. His Sr. season he caught 113 passes for 1781 yards and about 15 TDs. Hes really dangerous after the catch too. He was on top of Jeremy Maclin on the depth chart in college but got hurt, that should say something about his skill level and their expectations for him. I wouldnt mind sticking with defense for this pick either though, maybe Nate Allen if hes still on the board or Darryl Sharpton. But if Alexander is still there, I think we gotta take a serious look at him.

I think he just got injured again...

and I think he won’t be participating in the combine drills.

You mentioned Carlton Mitchell...

He’s a WR I’m interesting in watching at the combine. He’s a sleeper in my opinion. He’ll need some time to get used to the NFL, but I think he has all the tools to be a #1 type WR. I wouldn’t expect him to start right away. We still need a veteran guy like Boldin or whomever. But if this kid’s available in the 5th round, I’d take a chance on him. Most 5th round guys don’t stick anyway, so what do you have to lose?

the last quote said "very solid #2 receiver"

we don’t need any more #2 receivers on this roster. we have hartline who will be our #2, Bess for our slot guy, and cam for our #4. we need a true #1 guy who can get down the field and draw double coverage. which is why i don’t like dez bryant either, because he’s in the 4.5’s and we need a guy sub-4.45

Give the Phins Spiller in Round #1 and Gilyard in Round #2 and I would say the Phins had a very successful draft!

I am all about drafting offensive skill position players. The Phins biggest need is explosive playmakers on offense.

Let's get offensive this offseason!
