Video Time: Eric Berry anyone?
It's time to take a break from reality to visit my imagination. And in my perfect dream world, Tennessee safety Eric Berry somehow falls to pick #12 and the Dolphins nab him - drafting the best defensive player in the draft not named Suh.
Of course, that probably has a .0000001% chance of happening. But I refuse not to dream!
So watch these videos and you can begin to understand why Berry is my favorite player in this entire draft.
Enjoy!
Does he remind anyone else of a young Ed Reed?

I can’t wait for people to realize that Byrd just over-achieved his rookie year and really isn’t that good.
the same way all Bills fans told me JP Losman…and then Trent Edwards…were franchise QBs. lol
But Losman IS a franchise QB

You really think Byrd and Losman are on the same level?
I mean the kid led the league in interceptions – playing half as many games as everyone else in the running.
That being said, I was only joking about the comparison.

know that feeling, however for us it is kinda exciting
to look at FA and draft cause we don’t have that many holes to fill.
first there were about 1,000 posts about the draft, then whammo – Wilfork, Dansby in FA and maybe trading for Anquan Boldin! those would totally change our draft!
Hey we will trade you Thigpen for your 3rd round pick. At least then you would have a decent QB as starter!

I imagine the Rams fans haven't been on their board since the season ended! They need to completely replace their ENTIRE team!

Actually, and you’re not going to believe this, because I don’t… it’s starting to look like we’re sticking with Sir Trentative Checks-down-a-lot.
Luckily we’ve got a good shot a sending a third string veteran DE to the Rams for their first rounder – that sounds fair, right?

I want to keep CP10. Trade Thiggy for a 3.
trade that 3 and J Princess (Porter) for Anquan Boldin
That way we get Q for the 4 or 5 that we traded to get thiggy!

actually ive always thought byrd would be a good player
even though his 40 was redic slow and he dropped i predicted to be awesome. Byrd shows good vision and reads as a rook but isnt the fastest or best tackler

Berry's a stud
it would take a syzygy of mistakes and poor judgement for the fins to get him. But, Al Davis did draft Heyward-Bey with the 7th pick last year, crazy things have happened.
What starts here changes the world.
Too bad theres only one al davis in this world...
not ten more to help us out
I'm not sure this is healthy, lol,
I don’t want to even think it, he would fit us so well, it would be like serendipity, too good to be true, which it is/will be.

He looks like a player but I’ll stick with McClain or Graham.

i have no idea…i wouldn’t sleep for months after we drafted Berry because of the anticipation of him and Smith together in Miami’s secondary. It would be too much for me to handle. lol

These highlight reels do not tell the story...
Most anyone can get some exciting background music and make their best plays of a college career look like all-star quality. How often did he get burned deep? How often did he whiff trying to reach on an interception? How many YAC did he let up? Is he a field General? Hard worker?
It would seem he has a scoring mentality, which is great. I like the toughness and athleticism I see. But can he read a play and get in the right place? Does he blow assignments?
Anyone spent some time watching his impact on a game?
Ed Reed impacts every play he is in the game before it even starts … did Berry do this in the college ranks?
….
HE'S ALL THAT AND MORE!
I too live in Knoxville and have watched Eric Berry on every Saturday the last 3 years. He has made few mistakes in his time here…He rarely and I mean rarely got burned and was outstanding at reading routes and stopping the run. There’s a reason why he was only 8 yards short of the NCAA all time interception return yards and thats because he is a stud…Matty I think we should trade up to get him that’s how good I think he is. I am on the ERIC BERRY Bandwagon!

First post
Hey guys, I’ve been an avid reader of the Phinsider for the past couple of years and this is my first actual post. I’m sure I will get no love for this from FinFanFromCA but I’m currently a student at the University of Tennessee, have lived in Knoxville all my life, and have followed Tennessee football as closely as I have our beloved Dolphins. To answer Fins4evr72, Berry redefines the term “having an impact” on the game. He has the playing speed like a corner, hits like a linebacker and, when he gets the ball in his hands, watch out! He rarely ever gets beat in coverage (deep or not), is as sure handed as a WR (TN tried using him on offense during the abysmal 08’ football season), and will make the tackle immediately 9 times out of 10. He was just a few yards short of breaking the NCAA record for most interception return yards of all-time but he was used all over the place by Monte Kiffin and his INT total dropped last year. He is frequently compared to Troy Polamalu and Ed Reed and I wouldn’t disagree at all.
Just to show you guys that I’m not a homer who is exaggerating the skill set of a favorite player of mine, I don’t like the Dolphins should draft Dan Williams, despite the glaring need at NT. He was efficient but nothing spectacular until this last season and even then, I think he is better suited in a 4-3 than a 3-4.
Welcome PhinsFan420!
I just made my first post last week, hope you feel welcome here brother! :) p.s. Thanks for the insight on Berry, let’s all believe that he will fall to us…you never know!

My first thought was Darren Sharper!!
Our 12th position this draft year may be very BIG!! About 50% of the teams above us need QB’s and O-Line. The O-Line prospects in the draft are DEEP and there are a couple potentially good QB’s. I feel that this presents us a very real chance to land a Berry, or a Spiller (yeah I am on the wagon!) , or a McLain, or a McCoy. I strongly feel that there will end up being a real gem, possibly one of these very 4 left for us at 12!!!!
Oh and hope for Matty!!
IF we break it down this way…….
11 teams must pick.
6 desperately need O-Line or QB so we are down to 5
5-McLain
4-McCoy
3-Spiller
2 picks left before us!!
Matty that is like more of a 33% chance!!!!!!
Of course, that probably has a .0000001% chance of happening. But I refuse not to dream!
all i want is fundamentals from our draftees
when we look to draft this year I would really like to see the the front office not only draft quality, but technically sound players. Our defense fell apart last year when they forgot they had arms to tackle with (note the new coordinator). I love a ball hawking safety or a corner who takes risks but we were all taught at 8 years old how to tackle. use your arms to wrap up the guy. That is what we are missing since Zack has been away. basics win football games and if you look at our reels from last year we lost when we got away from the basics
technique is coachable
playmaking ability is not. I agree that our team struggled somewhat tackling—some players more than others—but we need to add a disruptive force to that side of the ball. Someone that can just ruin a qb’s day, the way Dansby did Aaron Rodgers in the playoffs.

Eric Berry
is a stud. i like the way he plays, and if he is on the board at 12 we better get him!
F - Eric Berry
Yea… I said it. Why am I the only one to realize just how overrated these TN players are ?
JASON ALLEN – EDDIE MOORE… how many flops do we need to draft from TN before someone wakes up ? NO……NO…….NO to eric Berry. thank GOD he will probably be gone when we draft… A Safety is just not that valuable in the order of your $$$ CAP aor olayer value. ORDER OF IMPORTANCE – Again – #1 Franchise QB, #2 RB….., #3 WR,,,,, #4 DE …(PASS RUSHER) #5 MLB… #6 OLB… (in a 3-4) # 7 NT #8 LT…. #9 CB…. #10 Center…
THAT’S 10 POSITIONS of major importance and SAFETY is not there… sure I HATE the GERBIL and he KILLED us last year… But how many games would we have won with a FRANCHISE WR ??? maybe 3 more with a Brandon marshall or Larry F. type… and Folks I bought the jersey and (cool aid) with Chad Henne – but the JURY is still out if he is a FRANCHISE QB…
THE TEMAS THAT WIN TITLES HAVE GREAT PASSING GAMES and GREAT OFFENSE…our “O” is average at best… Many of you know I want Mcclain or DEZ with the #1 pick – DEF player because its so messed up there right now…. but really based on my vlaue chart – WR is the more important position…
LAST NOTE – the RAVENS are not the same Defense first team that won the SB – even they are switching to a more “offense focused” team…
and there are a LOT of S. in the later rounds that have great careers…. Clemmons should be given a shot this year – he could be great with some coaching…

So is this why Manning is such a terrible QB?
I think you have to look at each player individually if your intent is to be truly fair.

Wow
Any school that continually churns out NFL prospects will inevitably have some that fail to succeed. For every Jason Allen or Eddie Moore, there is a Reggie White or, like texascowpunk said, a Peyton Manning. The list goes on: Jason Witten, Jamal Lewis, Leonard Little, Albert Haynesworth, etc. The Super Bowl winning Saints have two former Vols that played prominent roles this season in Jabari Greer and Robert Meachem. Hell, even our own Tony McDaniel came from UT. Eric Berry is regarded as the best overall player on some well respected analysts draft boards, but his position has him dropping to #3 overall in most mocks.
I respectfully disagree in your summary of the 10 positions of major importance. I can’t understand why you would rank a 3-4 DE over a NT or OLB in that same scheme. I’m also not sure how you can justifiably make the argument that safety is such an unimportant position and then follow that up with a sentence about how bad our safety killed us last year. I do agree with you on two things though sir: #1) Clemons has a ton of potential and, most importantly, #2) The Miami Dolphins rule!!! Have a good one!

Since we're dreaming, of course
How does the rest of our offseason pan out if we draft Berry at #12? I say:
-Sign Dansby
-Round 2: Draft Hughes (or another pass-rusher)
-Round 3: Cam Thomas or Demaryius Thomas (depending on how low his stock goes)
-Round 4: Jimmy Graham
Not sure about the later rounds. But that’d be a dream come true
It's 2010 - do the smart thing. Draft Myron Rolle.
Might we already have ERIC BERRY on the roster?
I’m talking about Vontae Davis.
Yeah, I already know about the posts to start Will Allen and move Vontae to FS.
The chances that Eric Berry falls to us at #12 are very slim.
The chances that Joe Haden 5-11 190 CB is there at #12 (and would be good value) is actually much higher.
For the record, I think that Vontae Davis > Will Allen and should start over the older player.
But if we take Joe Haden at #12 AND move Vontae Davis to Free Safety, that would give us a secondary for the future
that looks like
LCB Sean Smith 6-3 209
RCB Joe Haden 5-11 195
SS Chris Clemons 6-1 210
FS Vontae Davis 5-11 203
The secondary transforms from a weakness to a strength.
As much as many would like to dream of Eric Berry in the Dolphin secondary, it is not realistic. However, we could have Eric Berry Lite if we draft Joe Haden and IF Vontae can make a successful transition to FS.
Not just a pipe dream!
NEW DRAFT PLAN: Sign Dansby and Pennington. Trade Tyler Thigpen to Buffalo for the 1st RD swap to #9 ahead of Denver. Draft Dez Bryant. Trade the Third Rounder to Denver for TE Tony Sheffler and Wesley Woodyard.

Actually I agree that Eric B. has talent and will be a good player – my point was that MIAMI has no luck with TN players, not that they are all bad…. appreciate the opposing points of view too. I ranked DE higher (only slightly) because a DE in any scheme, has more chances to get SACKS than any other position – even OLB in a 3-4 because OLB’s also have pass coverage responsibilities some of the time. TODAYS GAME is about pressure on the QB if you are talking defense. I would like others to tell me how HIGH they would rank the safety position – and others. Personally you could use this type of chart with a salary cap also – deciding where to spend your FA money.
My point was that a GREAT safety is a luxury, we can’t afford to draft in the 1st round – when we have so many holes like WR, MLB, OLB, and NT…
also – someone tell me why we SHOULDNT switch to a 4-3 with this teams current players….SHULA was much better at making the scheme fit the PLAYERS – . coaches and GM’s today just want to MAKE OVER a team in their own image – damn the problems it causes….

It really doesnt matter which one we get, Berry, McClain or Dez Bryant will be playmakers for years to come. FA will determaine a lot of things for us as well as the teams that pick in front of us. Lets just hope the front office pulls the trigger on at least 2 players in FA, for sure Dansby and maybe marshall or trade for Bouldin. We should have a lot of money freed up when we release, Porter, Gribel Wilson, Ted Ginn , dont think J. feguson will be back either and then theres Pennington, do we resign just for a backup or sign and trade to a team with a need for a good backup like the cards, Lots of possibilities. The future of the Dolphins look great
eric berry is a top 5 pick
would be shocked if he’s there at 12 and wouldn’t think twice about taking him, the value would be too much to pass on, like vontae falling to us last yr.
