PrintIt's time to wrap up the 2nd annual 'Matty Awards' by giving out the final four awards. But be sure to look for next week's announcement of the 2010 Joe Robbie Memorial Phinsider Hall of Fame class.
The final four awards and their winners are below. And thanks to the over 350 people who voted on these awards!
The Mercury Morris Front-page Frontrunner Award - given to the blogger with the most and/or best front-paged fanposts. Bonus points for rec's.
And 'The Matty' goes to...
Mosul_DolFan, with 52% of the vote. Rzayo was 2nd.
This is Mosul's fifth career 'Matty Award."
The Jake Long Rookie Blogger of the Year Award - given to the best rookie blogger at the site.
And 'The Matty' goes to...
Uncle finster, with 35% of the vote. Dolphinsinbuffalo was 2nd.
This is finster's second career award.
The Zach Thomas Leadership Award - given to the blogger who best exemplifies sportsmanship and level-headedness when posting and commenting.

about 2 years. They were reciprocal certs. It was rather easy really. Only had to pass the exam once
and had already had well over 2 years experience, plus was grandfathered in those states that now require a fifth year in school, cause I had over 5 years experience

Audit - micro-cap public companies. Clients in 35 states and 16 foreign countries over about 10 years.

Just curious, if you are a CPA or going to be one that is, any advice for someone w/o an accounting background who would like to do bookkeeping on the side?

I've dabbled in accounting software
so I know what a General Ledger is, a debit, credit, assets, liabilities, etc are. IOW, the crude basics.
But never done any actual bookkeping. Reason I ask, is I’m trying to pick up some side work and have quite a few friends with small businesses (mostly sole proprietorship operations). They just need help with the accounting side.
I am in NM/CO these days.
Advice?
I was just curious about location. If you were in So FL I could help more
because my suggestion is to find a local CPA who does not do write-up work (as we call it), maybe just specializes in tax for example. This way you have some one to call when you have questions. (I am more than willing to help when I can – it is just sometimes a call is needed cause you are stuck right in the middle of something). I would pick up an accounting 101 and 102 textbook and peruse them. Also, talk with all the CPAs near you, maybe some of them have work they can pass off to you – either as a subcontractor or straight-up where they provide other services and do not have the time or inclination to do this work. The problem for many CPAs is that they can not charge enough to make it profitable for them.
For example, I do consulting work for small public companies. I also prepare consolidations for companies that own multiple companies. I also do consolidations involving foreign subsidiaries which includes foreign currency translations. I also prepare full financial statements and full quarterly/annual reports to be filed with the US SEC. I charge far more per hour for this work than they pay for their write-up work, so someone else does that before I get the books. I also convert them from cash basis to full-accrual, which most bookkeepers simply do not know.
Not tooting my horn here, just trying to show you the differences in CPA specialties. I MIGHT have someone who can pass you some work once you get started, he lives north of Denver somewhere on top of a mountain I think.

And I know the CPA’s, like you, are the ones that handle the big, important stuff. My interest is very much small time, as you guessed, for very small operations.
I think i’ll start with some books & background material to get my feet wet so to speak. Maybe time to head back to the JC for a few classes even. I’ll also see about talking to locals and perhaps get in contact with a CPA.
Ha ha, I actually know what cash & accrual basis accounting are. So I must not be starting totally from scratch!
Are there any certifications or licenses or credientials essentially, that you need to do this work (at the level I’m speaking of) or is it more or less ad hoc?
Doing tax work sounds interesting too. Certainly handy for some income around April.

CPAs that handle stuff like me and are on their own are very few and very far inbetween. Most work for medium to large firms.
No certification or license required. I hate tax work, but it is handy for some income. The tax laws change every year so it is hard to keep up, however unless you are doing complicated returns, then it does not change that much.

Making a long story short...
I was a software programmer for a billing system which included GL. Hence I’ve at least passing familiarity with the crude basics of accounting.
I’m sure tax work is a colossal PITA but then, income is income and in that area, you can pretty much pencil it in for a very specific time period during the year.

If you have any tax questions that PT
somehow can’t answer, I’ll try what I can. Keep in mind I’m relatively new at it, though. I’ve taken the classes and whatnot, but interning for a PubServ Firm is just a totally different monster.

Is absurd.
The list of partnerships just does not decrease.. And the return software is no easier to use than it is to even figure out what the figures will come out to be.
You won’t need to worry about that, though. Just venting, cuz I need to.

Just be ready to do boring work.
It’s easy to pick up with enough time, if you enjoy and are capable of working with numbers.
I think PT down there has better advice for you.. it’s just not something you can describe very easily.

i was watching this video for one of my classes and they were doing an experiment, they had two actors, one was the owner of a gas station and the other was a muslim woman and the guy refused service just because she was muslim and calling her names and shit and they recorded, a huge majority of the customers that came in just ignored it and did nothing it was disgusting to watch

There are some other areas of the hill country that are nice
but Austin is certainly the best part of that area. We also make a yearly trip to kayak down the Guadalupe.

Yes. Good stuff. I was a manager for a restaurant back in the early 90's.
We made them with a mixture of breadcrumbs, crabmeat, Parmesan, butter and spices. They would bake them and then put them under the broiler to melt two pieces of provolone on top of them. They were AWESOME!
