Non-draft talk! AFC East Secondary Rankings...

Now here this....a fanpost that isn't about the draft or how we'll trade for 3 different superstars, sign the 2 best FA's, hit on all our draft picks, and win the SB in a blowout next year. (sounds fun though...)

Looks like ESPN is running a series ranking different groups. Among the ones that caught my attention though was this little number ranking AFC East Secondaries. Now bear in mind, these are not my rankings but those of ESPN (yes, yes I know, let the booing begin....).

1. New York Jets

A lot has been written about Darrelle Revis. Like many, I put him at the top of the cornerback list. He would have been my NFL Defensive Player of the Year for 2009. But he can cover only one receiver at a time.

I contend that New York’s biggest offseason need is a starting cornerback opposite Revis. Donald Strickland, Lito Sheppard and Dwight Lowery are all best suited for third cornerback duties. Lowery is my favorite of these three, but he has physical limitations.

Jets head coach Rex Ryan obviously expects a lot out of this position and an upgrade could make an excellent defense even better. Strong safety Jim Leonhard is a personal favorite of mine. The guy has some limitations of course, but he just makes plays -- especially as a coverage player. Free safety Kerry Rhodes took some criticism during the 2009 season, but I contend that he is a well above average all-around safety. Year 2 in this defense could really yield dividends for Rhodes. Backup free safety Eric Smith could leave via free agency, but he was a liability for most of the season.

Overall, the Jets get the edge as the best secondary in the division weighted heavily on what Revis brings to the table.

2. New England Patriots

While I give the Buffalo Bills’ set of safeties the nod as the division’s best pair, I’m high on the Patriots’ Brandon Meriweather. He’s the best safety overall in the AFC East. As good as he is at strong safety, Meriweather and the Patriots would benefit from an upgrade at free safety. Brandon McGowan is a force against the run, but is too often exposed in coverage. Fellow free safety James Sanders is too ordinary in both facets.

At cornerback, veterans Leigh Bodden and Shawn Springs caught way too much heat for New England’s pass defense issues. Remember, this is a defense that lacks much of a pass rush. These two are still starting caliber, particularly Bodden (an unrestricted free agent).

The younger guys are the problem. Surely they will improve, but Darius Butler, Terrence Wheatley and Jonathan Wilhite collectively did little to get excited about in 2009. If Bodden is retained, the Pats squeak ahead of the Bills as the second-best secondary in the division. Without Bodden, Buffalo has a distinct advantage.

3. Buffalo Bills

When evaluating the safeties in this division, I think you have to give that position to the Bills. In 2009, safety Jairus Byrd obviously made a ton of impact plays as a rookie and was an extremely pleasant surprise. His ability to play the ball and his coverage abilities overall are very strong, but when it comes to playing the run, let’s just say that isn’t his specialty. I am a big fan of safety Donte Whitner, too. Last season wasn’t his best campaign, but he is very talented and versatile. Fellow safeties George Wilson and Bryan Scott are not household names, but both are very solid players who deserve playing time, though Scott might leave via free agency. I still have hope for Leodis McKelvin to develop into an upper-tier cornerback. Overall, the threesome of McKelvin, Drayton Florence and Terrence McGee was underwhelming in 2009.

4. Miami Dolphins

Vontae Davis and Sean Smith get a lot of ink as the Dolphins’ starting rookie cornerbacks. Smith began the season strong, but his unusual body type and struggles flipping his hips always might hold him back. To me, he finished the season as a somewhat overrated player.

But Davis could be on the verge of stardom. Like Smith, he made some rookie mistakes, but this kid has it all physically. He will be a true No. 1 cover man -- maybe as soon as next season. Third cornerback Will Allen is serviceable, but not dynamic.

Gibril Wilson and Yeremiah Bell are both average starting caliber strong safeties. But the problem in Miami is that neither has the skill set for deep patrol. The lack of a true free safety-type hurt this pass defense and is a clear offseason need.

******************************************************************************************************************************

Alright, alright, the best thing to do with venom is to spit it out. Now that that's out of the way, how would you all rank AFC East secondaries. Try to be semi-objective (or at least try to disguise the blatant homerism!).

Unfortunately I'd have to agree with their assessment that the jets have the #1 ranking in this category for our division. Positions 2-4 though seem quite debatable.

To not totally ignore the draft/FA angle, aside from the rankings, how and/or what do you think the fins have to do to move up the charts in this category?

Have at it.

wow, bell? really?

I saw him as another run stuffer who struggled in coverage. We sure seem to have a lot of guys who fit that description.

As for the jets secondary, I’d take Kerry Rhodes over Bell or Wilson.

Bodden was pretty decent in NE last year. Granted they had virtually no pass rush whatsoever though.

No he was pretty good actually

Wilson made him look bad. He did make th (not so) pro bowl after all ,so he aint too bad.

He was better in '08 I thought...

seemed right on the verge of becoming a real star. He had a bunch of ‘almost’ plays, including an almost interception (he dropped it) against Houston I remember late in that game.

This year he just seemed to go back a bit and become yet another run stuffer, coverage liability, no big play, type of guy.

alright hooligans...

so what would you all do to improve the secondary this offseason?

does it need improving? (ha ha, i’ll just put that out there)

presumably yes, and if so, where does it sit in the list of priorities for us?

by Natalya on Feb 18, 2010 9:26 PM EST reply actions

We may not get to it this off season

and if Clemons continues to improve and be a decent FS, we have two ery good corners with two solid safeties behind them. I’m not so sure our secondary should be our biggest concern. LB, WR corps, a NT, and a replacement back would be bigger needs,

The only wisdom is the knowledge that you don't know.

by PotM on Feb 18, 2010 9:40 PM EST up reply actions

I don't even think secondary should be a concern NOW

Smith and Vontae will obviously be better in their second seasons. Vontae will be a star, I can say that much. Sean Smith won’t be the better of the two, but he will make plays and be a solid cover corner. At the very least, he won’t be a liability in coverage, and as long as you’ve got a star on the other side, that’s fine.

Every linebacker spot is a far greater weakness and need than our SS and FS situation. With better backers, some who can cover tight ends/drop back, our secondary would go from “poor” to very good, even with the same players we have now.

Then we can see if the Clemons experiment is going nowhere, and look for long-term safety replacements.

I'd like to see a FS upgrade...

and a 3 on Myrone Rolle would fit that bill nicely without breaking the bank.

Pass rush is a big concern definitely but you still have to have someone other than a rodent (Gerbil) at FS who can run with TE’s for at least a few seconds….

by Natalya on Feb 19, 2010 12:07 AM EST up reply actions

Of course, I agree about the FS upgrade

that’s a given. But I also want to see us improve our pass rush. By itself, that will make our secondary better.

-LCFF

by LeftCoastFinFan on Feb 19, 2010 1:28 AM EST up reply actions

Wow, reality...

Like most things football, it’s a team game. The (cough) Jets get the edge because of their blitz three out of four downs front seven.

The (cough) Patriots were better in coverage because they had a non-existant pass rush. So they had to cover longer, and because so, they let some passes be caught.

The (cough) Bills were atrocious everywhere on defense. They may have individual talent, but couldn’t put it all together. Too many weak positions.

Sorry, but the Golden Dolphins aren’t as bad as you portray. “Team” injuries had an affect. Vontae is every bit as good as any corner. And I didn’t see any of the other safties make the Pro Bowl, even as a second teamer.

If Miami had their defense intact, they would be equal to the (cough) Jets. Certainly they deserve at least second spot, as (cough) NE and the Bills are weaker overall in secondary comparisons. You even mentioned words like “underwhelming” and “little to get excited about” in 2009 for both these teams, yet you put them ahead of the Golden Dolphins.

Nope. Not convinced of your rankings…

I see the Phins secondary as being as bad as 4th in the division

Look, the Phins don’t have a playmaker, ballhawk at either safety position (a total of 3 int’s – all Bell). They gave up a ton of big plays and tackled poorly. The Phins had the worst CB (Davis) statistically in the division: http://www.thephinsider.com/2010/1/11/1244099/weekend-roundup-talking

All of those things points to the Phins not being very good in the secondary.

Smith has a bright future and, despite what everyone thinks, outplayed Davis last year. Davis, as I have said before, I just don’t know about. He wasn’t very good last year, despite the INT’s. Bell is a good run stopping SS. Wilson Sucks. And for everyone clamoring for Clemons, get real. He started a couple of games, was ineffective, so the Phins went back to Wilson. He was a 6th round pick for a reason. That reason, he isn’t very good.

The secondary needs work. Right now, the 4 best DB’s on the roster are Allen, Bell, Davis, and Smith. Those are the 4 guys who need to be on the field the majority of the time, regardless of position.

by ct1361 on Feb 19, 2010 10:14 AM EST up reply actions

Ct....

so if I read you right, with you feeling Allen is one of the best 4 – you’d put him back at safety ahead of wilson?

Would you make any moves to address the DB issues we have?

by Natalya on Feb 19, 2010 10:22 AM EST up reply actions

I would move one of the listed CB's to FS

Whether it is Smith, Allen, or Davis (my personal choice). I don’t think Bell or Wilson are that effective in coverage. I also don’t think they possess the ball skills necessary to be quality pass defenders. If you believe that the league is becoming more pass oriented, which I do, I want my DB’s to have ball skills

Plus, what is the downside in doing this? Run defense may suffer, but so what. What team effectively ran the ball against the Phins last year? I can’t think of one off hand (maybe Houston but they did everything well against the Phins). But even poor passing teams killed them with the pass. Having 3 CB’s on the field at all times then makes sense. Who would you rather have patrol the middle of the field, Davis or Wilson? That is a no brainer to me, especially with Smith and Allen on the outside.

Now if you tell me that we can get a stud, ballhawking FS in FA or the draft, all of this changes my opinion. Then I am good with Smith & Davis as the starting CB’s, Allen at Nickel (even though I think that Allen should start over Davis), and Jones at Dime. That works for me. But if our current roster doesn’t change I think Allen, Bell, Davis, and Smith should be the starters because they are the 4 best DB’s on the team.

by ct1361 on Feb 19, 2010 10:57 AM EST up reply actions

okay, that's weird.

i would thing Davis would be the last choice to put back there. Smith first, because he is actually more of a prototypical safety AND we have Allen back to cover the other CB spot.

Allen would be my second choice because he has the experience and smarts to make the move, AND because as he gets older (slower) it is more of a natural transition.

-LCFF

by LeftCoastFinFan on Feb 19, 2010 11:16 AM EST up reply actions

I like Davis there because he is a physical guy who can tackle

If the Phins are worried about run support, then he makes sense. Also, based on the beginning of the season, Allen and Smith were the teams best CB’s. That is why the coaching staff had them as starters game one.

Davis is the more physical player, can make plays on the football, and is the most ineffective CB of the 3. Those things point to FS to me.

by ct1361 on Feb 19, 2010 11:34 AM EST up reply actions

okay, i can see that

but i think Davis has more potential at CB than Smith does. Smith is an anomaly. We like him because of his size… unusual at the position. But think don’t think he will end up actually playing the position better than Davis.

-LCFF

by LeftCoastFinFan on Feb 19, 2010 11:44 AM EST up reply actions

think I'm with the Leftman on this one...

If there was a reshuffling in the secondary, then I’d expect Smith to slide in for the Gerbil and Allen to be at CB. Not that I expect anything of that nature is going to happen.

I’d be happy with a 3rd round pick spent on a FS upgrade – Morgan Burnett, Myrone Rolle and others of that caliber. They are not quite at the same level as Berry, but probably just as good as Taylor Mays not to mention, infintely better than the Gerbil…

by Natalya on Feb 19, 2010 4:52 PM EST up reply actions

agree about the 3rd round upgrade

and I am still holding out hope that Clemons is good enough to justify him holding out at the beginning of camp last year. Maybe he is that diamond in the rough that just needs a bit more polishing to shine?

Question...
At cornerback, veterans Leigh Bodden and Shawn Springs caught way too much heat for New England’s pass defense issues. Remember, this is a defense that lacks much of a pass rush.

Wouldn’t that also mean that the Jests, because of their great pass rush had it a bit easier in their secondary covering opposing wide receivers? It’s a lot easier to cover for 2 or 3 seconds than 5. If you watch a lot of Revis’ film it shows him getting his head around very quickly. That’s because he knows Joba the Ryan is sending 5 or 6 guys at the QB and he’ll have to get rid of it quick. With all that being said I believe ranks 2,3, and 4 are interchangeable.

Here's a link that some of you might find interesting...

Click here for Pro Football Focus rankings. It shows that out of CBs who play 60% of their team’s defensive snaps, Sean Smith and Vontae Davis have allowed the 2nd and 6th worst QB passer ratings against. Both of your CBs seemed to be extremely home-run oriented. Either they made the play, or they got burnt. That’s why your secondary is ranked last in the AFC by Tim Graham.

My ranking:
1. Jets
2. Bills
3. Patriots
4. Dolphins

by Richard Hill on Feb 19, 2010 12:03 AM EST reply actions

Let me take a SWAG.....pats fin? ;-)

Davis was more of a gambler than Smith and I think it shows in that he got more INT’s but also gave up more long TD passes. Smith had no INT’s last year.

Regarding the rankings, yes the pair allowed very high QB ratings. Yet their overall ratings which include pass/run/tackling/etc, per the chart, were 21st and 24th among all CB’s who played 60% of their teams snaps. Ahead of notables like DeAngelo Hall, Jammer, Cromartie, Finnegan, and Dunta Robinson.

Yeah, but when people typically rank positions...

…they unfairly just look at the obvious stats- opposing teams production. Teams were most productive in the air against the Dolphins when facing the AFC East. No, that doesn’t factor in that both Smith and Davis were rookies with promising futures. No, that doesn’t factor in how much the other players on defense had an effect (there’s no way the Patriots have a better secondary than the Bills. Our front 7 were just leaps ahead of the Bills’). No, that doesn’t factor into anything else.

Just looking at opposing teams production against the secondaries, the Phins were the least in the East. Unfair? Possibly. But that’s what most sports writing is- writing about the obvious facts so the readers can look at the article and say, “Well, yes! I came to the same conclusion! I shall read this fine fellow more frequently.”

If you want to rank for future potential?

1. Jets
2. Dolphins
3. Bills
4. Patriots

That’s based on what is possible down the road from now. However, just looking at this past season, I wouldn’t vary too far from Graham’s analysis.

That's true.

I’m basing those off of this past season and where I see teams going from there with their current staff.

Just as much as good...

…as trying to predict a mock draft. I was just gauging the current players on the team. If the team is ranked low for the future, perhaps they should invest in secondary?

My rankings for NEXT YEAR!

1 (god damn the) Jets. they have a shutdown corner. 2. The MIAMI DOLPHINS! We have two very good corners and Bell will be there to helpthem out. If we can get a FS this offseason along with a SOLB to rush the passer. we will probrably be #1.Both the (god damn) jets and us will become even bigger rivals as we both improve. (i feel dirty for saying that) 3. The Pats 4. The Bills

8.2 YPA

The Dolphins gave up 8.2 YPA last season. Not all of that is the secondary’s fault since our linebackers couldn’t cover either. But only the Raiders has a worse YPA average than the Dolphins.

Rankings Smankings...

… and Drew Brees is to small to play quarterback…

… and Zach Thomas was too small to play ILB…

… and the Dolphins beat the (cough) Jets three in a row now…
… and with their perceived stinky secondary…
… and with their perceived best secondary…

… and the Jets suck! … and their quarterback has the worst qb rating for a season, and he sucks… and their coach is an ass, and he sucks…. and their quarterback leads in interceptions, and he eats hot dogs on the sideline, and poses for gay magazines… and he sucks again… and their LB Scott got run over… twice… cause he sucks…

Put that in your stats, sports analyst!

Well...

…when both teams are running based, the secondary rankings tend to hold less weight, right?

I know you’re kind of joking, but still. They’re set for a couple years down the road.

Very fresh food for thought post Talya!

I am going to stay away from the ranking, but a quality FS improves our group by a lot IMO.

I still have some concerns about Smith, they are all down the field though, I think he is on his way to being a very good CB, but like other CBs that aren’t on the fast side he has to be better than the other guys, he can’t make mistakes, because he can’t recover that lost ground, like Vontae.

One more year for the rooks should help a lot, I believe that at the end of next year Vontae will be in the Revis discussion, yes I think he’s that good, and I am concerned that Smiths weaknesses will rise due to Vontae’s prowess, when/if they stop throwing to Davis, Smith will get a lot of work.

A good FS can really solidify that side of the field, Smith with reliable deep help would be formidable.

If we get a better pass rush, then it’s a moot point, because Smith is very good at sticking with a guy short to mid, very good, better than Vontae maybe, but Vontae is better at mid and down field, IMO.

I’ve always been a Fan of Bell, proto-type NFL SS, overlooked in the Polamalu/Sanders era, but thems the brakes, lol, but it doesn’t change the fact that he is a very good SS, and 2 years ago he was injury prone, just sayin.

Put a good FS next to Bell and let him play his game without having to worry about baby sitting gerbil and watch him really shine.

What does W Allen have in the tank? I bet he’s not done, he might be done here though, if they see a deal they’ll take it IMO, if he stays, we are deep at CB and can throw a lot of looks.

Jones is a good nickle back, Culver and Clemons show promise, maybe one of them moves into the FS slot.

However we get him, through FA, trade, the draft or he rises from within, a good FS puts our squad right where we want, top ten, IMO.
