Jason Pierre-Paul
Hey Phinsider I have been a member for a couple of years now but am more of a lurker than post/commenter. I haven't heard any buzz on Jason Pierre-Paul around here so just for the fun of it I am going to make my case for why we should draft Pierre-Paul. Now I just want to say that I am still undecided on whom I really want the Dolphins to draft. Dez Bryant, Rolando McClain, Dan Williams, and Jason Pierre-Paul are atop my list at the moment (not in any particular order).
Jason Pierre-Paul is a DE from USF, he stands in at 6’6’’ and 260lbs. He would have to make the transition to play 3-4 OLB for the Dolphins and that transition is always a risky one (see Vernon Gholston). However Pierre-Paul is built in a very similar fashion to our very own Jason Taylor. This kid has athletic ability that is very rarely seen by a man his size. Pierre-Paul is going to drop jaws once the Scouting Combine gets here but he is not just a workout warrior he is also a tremendous athlete with more potential than anyone else in this years draft class. He actually didn’t start playing football until halfway through his junior year of high school because he was more interested in basketball even though he admits he wasn’t that good at it. After scouts saw him playing football they began offering him scholarships but because of poor grades he was forced to take the JUCO route.
In his first season of college football he produced at a very high level. Now I understand that this is at the JUCO level and the talent is not as good all around but this is a guy only playing in his 2nd full season of organized football. These are his stats:
College of the Canyons (Fr)
- 49 Tackles
- 19 Tackles for a loss
- 14 Sacks
- Two Forced Fumbles
- One INT
- One Fumbler Recovery
In his 2nd season he proved that he is no fluke. This guy is a playmaker rushing the QB. These are his stats from his Sophomore year in college:
Fort Scott Community College (Soph)
- 70 Tackles
- 10.5 Sacks
- Three Forced Fumbles
- Two Fumble Recoveries
Jason Pierre-Paul was rated as a 5 star JUCO when he was signed by the USF Bulls. In his only season at USF he was named All Big East First Team and was also named First Team All-American by Pro Football Weekly.
South Florida (Jr)
- 45 Tackles
- 16.5 Tackles for a Loss
- 6.5 Sacks
Strengths: Extremely Athletic…. Explosive first step…. Good Strength…. Excellent Size with a large frame…. Closing Speed…. Doesn’t shy away against the run
Weaknesses: Lack of Experience…. Intelligence may be an issue…. Doesn’t do well with Double Teams…. Needs to make the transition from 4-3 DE to 3-4 OLB…. Needs to increase his repertoire
I think that with the release of Porter and JT’s return in question, Parcells will look for that 3-4 OLB that he covets so much in the draft. Pierre-Paul may not be able to come in and be a 3 down player because of his lack of experience but his potential could raise him into the class of the DeMarcus Ware’s of the world. Here are some highlights from his only season at USF… let me know what you think.

I like Derrick Morgan better for the DE to OLB route,
he is beefier and better suited to setting the edge, not to mention he posted great stats at a higher collegiate level.

I like Morgan too but...
I don’t think he would be as well suited for the transition to 3-4 OLB as Pierre-Paul. Morgan is nowhere near as fast and he would probably have to shed some weight.

Yeah, I think Morgan's more of a prototypical 4-3 DE, but that's just my opinion

I think Morgan would be a better SOLB
while Pierre-Paul might be better suited to the Rush Backer.. I think preference between the two, for me, would be which LB we need more, and IMO it’s a Strongsider, only because I have faith that Cam Wake can hold down that Rush LB spot, if not right away, by next season at the latest.

well im assuming either wake or taylor would take the weak side
And morgan would take the strong side where he would do mainly run support but also be able to rush the passer which he did better then jpp in collage

Pierre Paul does not seem like a good fit
He seems slow when changing direction and even in the highlight film he is missing a lot of tackles and taking bad angles. As a 3-4 OLB he would need a lot of work and if he amounted to anything I think it would take at least three years to get any value out of him. Not a first rounder IMO

I am starting to like him more and more
The thing that separates Pierre-Paul from failed combine warriors like Mike Mamula and Vernon Gholston is his nonstop motor. It’s really pointless to get caught up in a player’s measurables when they’re taking plays off (which was a constant problem for Gholston at Ohio State). I watched a lot of JPP film last week and I came away pretty impressed (considering the fact I’d all but written him off as a one-year-wonder).
Nevertheless, I don’t expect the Trifecta to really consider taking JPP unless he demonstrates good football intellect and decision-making — whether it’s at the combine or a personal pro day. If he does, then maybe he starts getting some looks from us. which means he might become a “trade down” option if both Bryant and McClain are off the board.
JPP’s a risk, but I am not saying no just yet. He delights me for some reason.

good post
rec’d!
I like JPP a lot, too. But I don’t know I’m sold on using the 12th overall pick on him. I’d rather try to trade down. But maybe my feelings would change as I learn more about him.
I’ll admit that I think I like him the most of all the OLB prospects in this draft, though.
Yea after reading the post I would Like to see a little more myself but I won't be mad if it happens

OOOOOOOOO C-A-N-E-S AHHHHH(crowd yelling at kickoff!!!)
He certainly has a lot of potential
but I just think JPP is too much of a risk at 12 given other “safer” picks that will likely be available with just as high of a ceiling (e.g. Bryant, McClain, Spiller). Obviously they are all risks to an extent, but I think JPP is less proven and currently has a higher bust rate.
nice post, good insight, +1

If we traded down then sure why not
If he is available in the 2nd (i doubt it) then HELL YEAH!!!
Just think that the ILB should be addressed first, the OLB in the 2nd.
Welcome and nice first post!

JPP
He looks extremely raw to me. In the limited film clip I just watched he lost containment several times, missed a couple of tackles and did not finish a few plays it looked like he was in position to make. That said, I could see the athletic ability and size with a very large wingspan that coaches love. JPP looks like he might be a player but I don’t think right away, you’re probably looking at a two year project. Does the Tuna have that kind of patience? We’ll have to wait and see. There are certainly players who could help us out more right away, McClain and CJ Spiller to name two. I think this player speaks to how soon the Phin’s want to get there and what kind of chances they’re willing to take. I can certainly see the upside though. Size and athletic ability are two things you can’t coach.
