Bills might be interested in Tyler Thigpen

There are a lot of Bills fans, myself included, that would like to see Tyler Thigpen in a Buffalo uniform as a potential fit, at least a contender, for our starting quarterback gig.  Thigpen's fairly young, athletic, has a gunslinger mentality.  Given the Dolphins QB situation (Henne, PWhite and possibly Pennington), you guys don't seem to have a real need for TT at the moment.

- Could Buffalo reasonably expect Miami to listen to an offer for Thigpen from their division rival?

-  If so, obviously there will be some offers and counteroffers.  What level of compensation would the Dolphins be likely willing to traffic in? Not what kind of picks do you want Miami to ask for, but what kind do you think would actually be in the discussion?

We traded a 5th for him

And it seems like he’s shown nothing but upside since getting to Miami. I think he’s a superb backup and an acceptable starter at worst, possibly even being a good full-time QB.

If Miami lets him go for anything less than a high fourth, I’d be disappointed.

by Dolphinole on Feb 12, 2010 2:25 PM EST reply actions

I think it's definitely a discussion then

We’d pretty much all be willing to give our 3rd (9th in the round). See you guys could potentially start Henne all year and not suffer that much. We have Tritz Brohmwardspatrick at the moment.

Or we could swap firsts (our No. 9 for your No. 12). It’s about the same value wise.

Wow

I had no idea you were that serious about it. In my opinion, I think we would all jump on the opportunity to trade Thigpen for your third. That’d basically mean we got Anquan Boldin for a 5th round pick and moved our 3rd rounder up 3 spots (if we got Anquan with a third, of course.)

Also, the 9th pick in the draft could mean big time for us. Imagine Berry falling that far drools

by Dolphinole on Feb 12, 2010 2:36 PM EST up reply actions

“We’d pretty much all be willing to give our 3rd (9th in the round).”

I should say this much. Most of us who’d be willing to acquire Thigpen would be behind either our 3rd or a swap of 1sts for it. Not everybody in Buffalo wants Thigpen — Rob Johnson burned us really, really bad with trading for prospect QBs. There’s a group of Bills fans who likely won’t ever think we should trade for anything less than a Kelly. That’s ten years ago. RJ hurt that much.

The Marino vs. Kelly battles were always larger than life.
Seriously, though, you’ve got Denver (10), Jacksonville (11), and then you at 12. I’d say a draft day trade wouldn’t be out of the picture at all, especially if you think us, Den, or Jax will take the guy you’ve got your eyes on. We could spare three slots for Thigpen, definitely.

I don't see us trading him away.

I think you have a better chance at getting CP10, then Thigpen at this point.
I think PW has enough people scared as to whether or not he can be the backup guy, even with his limited action, he didn’t exactly blow our socks off.

Thigpen, in his limited action had some nice drives….a couple of bad throws, but still, he far out performed PW.

The thing about Pennington is

Buddy Nix specifically stated in his introduction to Buffalo that he wanted players who fit Buffalo’s cold weather, saying about the rough winter winds in the stadium “you want a guy who can throw it through that”. Pennington to me is the exact opposite of a guy Buffalo would look for if that’s the important criteria.

I don’t think Pennington fits in Buffalo, based on comments and philosophical statements by our new regime.

Sorry had to see if you bite on Byrd

I’d think a 3rd would be reasonable. If it was a swap of 1st there would have to a must have player drop like Barry and maybe throw in a 5th. We paid a 5th for him and you are a Div. rival. Trade value for the for the #9 pick is1350 and for the #12 pick is 1200. Difference of 150 which is the #88 pick 3rd round. 9th pick in the 5th has a value of 38.

Thigpen's likely to be the QB traded this offseason,

so long as Pennington completes his required throws by the end of February. Parcells likes to have veteran QBs on the roster, especially ones who are willing to mentor, so don’t expect CP10 to be going anywhere. A 3rd might actually be a bit low IMO, but then again your 3rd would be high. He is a starting caliber QB, we just fleeced KC.

I could see the your team not wanting anything less than a 4th

since you spent a 5th on him, and he’s actually servicable.

Buffalo won’t give you a 2nd, though. He’s not a must-get. It’s just with the right deal in the 3rds or 4ths (or a swap of 1sts — our 9th for your 12th) we could potentially have something here both teams would be interested in.

As much as we would love the 1st round swap, it won't happen.

If it does, you might seriously start thinking about getting a new GM. Most likely scenario, would be Thiggy for your 4th or 5th rounder. Either way we end up getting more than what we paid.

I'd shop Thigpen to Arizona First

I would offer Thigpen and our 6th round pick for your 2nd round pick if no one else bites and if that wasn’t good enough for you to make the trade, I’ll probly hold onto Thigpen as backup.

The first round swap is the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard of. Trade a valuable asset for essentially nothing? With all the talent in this draft, a former starting QB that does still have capability cannot go for anything less than a fifth round pick and should garner a fourth. moving up 3 spots? Ha! Take your pick, let Jax and Denver get theirs. We’ll still have at least three players at #12 that our FO will want.

by TheFinReaper on Feb 12, 2010 4:05 PM EST up reply actions

I agree with the first round swap.

No way we get a 2nd rounder for Thiggy and a 6th. Our best bet would be a 3rd to 5th rounder from a team that either needs a backup, or is looking for a place holder for a rookie.

I used to think I had a drinking problem.
So I stopped thinking.

by luvs2drnk on Feb 12, 2010 4:54 PM EST up reply actions

Those 3 spots would be huge.

It would probably be the difference in us getting or not getting McClain. Usually a team gives up a 3rd or 4th to move up a couple spots that high in the first, if not more. The only downside I see to this is trading a QB to a division rival, especially since Thigpen tore us up 2 yrs ago in KC. If it was anybody outside of the division I would have been happy with just getting our pick back since we traded for him in desperation in the middle of the season, and Henne’s our QB now so what do we care. Trade him if he’s worth anything and bring back CP10 or any other veteran QB.

by GoPhish13 on Feb 12, 2010 8:59 PM EST up reply actions

Would you re-sign CP10 then?

No. I wouldn’t find another vet QB that wouldn’t have a chance of controversy

You and your controversy theories.

I would do that trade in a heart beat, because I know there would be no QB controversy. I’ll go with the more likely scenario of a 3rd round pick, that we could package in a deal for Boldin. So in essence we get Boldin for Thigpen and maybe another late round pick. Are you telling me if that scenario played out it isn’t enticing to you?

PW turned out to be what?

He was what he was trained for. A run 1st, run 2nd and then run again mentality! He was criple in his 3 stringer qb training. NOt many snaps and all of them were running plays fron him, not even faking a throw.

Hmmm, what's the word I'm looking for here......

That’s right….crappy. A wasted pick. Horrible. Waste of a roster spot. Feel free to pick one. He was trained as a QB, whether that be a running QB or a pocket passing QB. His primary job is still to throw the ball, which he epically failed to do. Don’t give me being 3rd string hampered his abilities. Even Ryan Leaf could complete passes out in the flat to a wide open RB. No excuses.

So what you are saying is after you wanted Pat White in and he didn’t do very well, we should follow your advice again and sign Pennington?

Why on God’s sweet earth would you at any point of the season want White in over Henne. I didn’t see Chad struggle anywhere near enough to be called getting pulled.

I see you as one of the people that if Henne struggles for a couple of games be calling for Penninton reminding us of the success he had. Thus contributing the “QB controversy” I keep refering too.

Ya but those people are pretty much a very small number..

I know a few people wanted him in but seriously, there were far more who got pissed every time he was brought in. I believe the few that wanted him in so bad were big fans of him in college or something. Once you saw him run a few plays you knew he would never amount to anything. I did get excited that one run I saw him break for 30ish yards, however other then that he was a huge disadvantage.

As the driver of the Thigpen bus

I’m gonna have to say we wanna keep Thigpen for at least one more season. I have been arguing the point with my fellow Phin fans that Thiggy deserves a chance to fight for the starting job here. I really don’t see him leaving Miami this next season, Parcells and Co traded him for 5th knowing what he is capable of. Moreover, they seen what he was able to do against the Steelers so I’m sure there gonna keep him at least 1 more season.

I think he's a good backup

but I think we should definitely deal him if Buffalo offers a good enough price. Say they give us a 3rd for him.. Now we basically traded a 5th round pick for a 3rd round pick. And you can still get a good player in the 3rd round. I think we can find another backup caliber QB easily, and to add a 3rd rounder would be pretty nice

I would only do that if CP10 was coming back,

and even then I’m not sure, but if we have to find a new back up QB, then there is another hole to fill, why would you create another hole to fill for a 3rd round pick, so you could use that 3rd round pick to fill the hole, lol.

If CP10 stays I wouldn’t be mad about it, but we have enough holes to fill without poking new ones, lol.

Well, they may value him more at this point, since they are lacking a real "starting" caliber guy

than we or KC did last year, when we were looking for a 3rd stringer and they were looking to dump him for pick(s). If Buffalo feels like he can be their starter, they might see a 3rd rounder as a deal for them

I don't think CP should come back

And I think you can fill a bigger hole with that 3rd rounder (get a LB, or a TE, or a FS… something like that) and get a QB later. There are also other options in FA if we want a vet, like Garcia (who, I know, is going on 40, but still can be that veteran backup guy), Charlie Batch, or even Josh McCown.

Pennington is probably better than all 3 of those guys, but I see too many potential issues of having the guy who many fans consider to be the “savior” of Dolphins football sitting behind our young QB. I’ve said it multiple times, that I believe there will big issues if Henne struggles at all. Most fans, beat writers, and possibly some players will be calling for Pennington to take over, when that’s clearly not what’s best for this team moving forward. I don’t think that happens with a different guy there, because nobody else has the kind of “savior” status here that Pennington has at the moment..

Yea, want has nothing to do with it for me either,

we have enough holes, I’m happy we have TT, and also realize we will most likely have to get yet another QB, for 3rd string duties, I have a feeling White won’t be brought back as a QB next year, if at all.

So IMO if you trade TT and don’t have CP10, you have 1 QB now, and if they have to come in, they aren’t going to be comfortable with the system, just not sound strategy IMO.

exactly signing CP-10 would be yet another epic failure on the Dolphins part

In 07 Beck was rooted onto the field

and he wasn’t proven, fact is if the starter sucks the backup will be called for no matter who he is

The only wisdom is the knowledge that you don't know.

You're as bad as Neo with the whole QB controversy issue.

It doesn’t matter who the backup is. If Henne struggles someone is always going to call for the backup to be put into the game. I have confidence in the FO that the only way CP10 would ever enter the game is if Henne either gets injured, or starts playing as bad as Ryan Leaf. They won’t panic as quickly as the fan base does, and jump to rash decisions.

I used to think I had a drinking problem.
So I stopped thinking.

never said they would

I don’t know why you don’t see the potential for a controversy. It’s not Pennington, or the coaches that would be the problem. It’s everybody around them. A few moron fans calling for Pat White to start and guys IN THE LOCKER ROOM grumbling about Pennington starting are extremely different scenarios. If Henne struggles with Thigpen behind him, there’s no controversy. If he struggles with Chad “The Savior” Pennington behind him, you better believe there will be grumbling, and whether he likes it or not, Pennington will be undermining Henne’s authority as the leader of the team simply by being there. It’s not his fault, and it’s not going to happen to ALL veteran QB’s, but simply because of what Pennington was able to do in 08, he’ll always be the man as long as he’s on our roster, even if he’s not the better QB.

Last year should have solidified the locker room behind Henne.

He got nothing but praise frm everyone in the locker room. They know he’s only a first year starter, and they know there is going to be bumps along the road. But I firmly believe the locker room knows Henne gives them the best chance to win every week.

I’d rather face him than have him under center for us.
