After witnessing what I did today out of Chad Henne I'm going to remove myself from his bandwagon (which I've been on since the day he was drafted in 2008). In this article I will make the case for drafting a franchise QB. I'll focus on on former first rounders as that is historically the best place to find one. Yes, there are exceptions to that rule but not many (For instance, name me ONE proven QB outside of Drew Brees to come from the second round). Here are the first round QB's taken in the first round since 2000 (I don't want to go too far back because I believe that introduces too many possible variables). Along with the guy is the year he was drafted, where he went overall, and the team to take him:
2010
1rst Sam Bradford (St. Louis)
25th Tim Tebow (Denver)
2009
1rst Matt Stafford (Detroit)
5th Mark Sanchez (NYJ)
17th Josh Freeman (Tampa Bay)
2008
2nd Matt Ryan (Atlanta)
18th Joe Flacco (Baltimore)
2007
1st JaMarcus Russel (Oakland)
22nd Brady Quinn (Cleveland)
2006
3rd Vince Young (Tennessee)
10th Matt Leinart (Arizona)
11th Jay Cutler (Denver)
2005
1rst Alex Smith (San Francisco)
24th Aaron Rodgers (Green Bay)
25th Jason Campbell (Washington)
2004
1st Eli Manning (SD)*
4th Philip Rivers (NYG)*
11th Ben Roethlisberger (Pittsburgh)
22nd J.P. Losman (Buffalo)
*obviously these two were part of a draft day trade
2003
1st Carson Palmer (Cincinatti)
7th Byron Leftwich (Jacksonville)
19th Kyler Boller (Baltimore)
22nd Rex Grossman (Chicago)
2002
1st David Carr (Houston)
3rd Joey Harrington (Detroit)
32nd Patrick Ramsey (Washington)
2001
1st Michael Vick (Atlanta)
2000
18th Chad Pennington (NYJ)
That's 28 QB's taken in the first round in the past decade.
Out of these 28, half of them were or are “franchise QB's for their team at some point or another. Meaning they played in the playoffs multiple times or looking down the line will take their team to the playoffs soon for multiple times. Now some teams such as Baltimore or Atlanta had to go twice in the same five year span to find the right guy....but it's not the “crapshoot” that analysts and others in the media would have you believe.
Is it time for the Dolphins to make that pick? I believe it is.
