Kevin Curtis: A Deeper Look

With all the recent postings about Injuries, Trip-Gate, and Quarterbacks, it seems that Kevin Curtis has been lost in the shuffle. It's irrational to expect an extremely high amount of play from a 32-year old transient, but he is fairly intriguing.

The Story Thus Far

Curtis was a standout WR in his initial time at Junior College powerhouse Snow State. Walking onto Utah State, he broke almost every single one of their receiver records. One of his best friends at the time was standout TE Chris Cooley (Washington Redskins).

Before the combine, Curtis was hand-clocked at 4.21. During the combine, he would be clocked at 4.35. Some serious wheels, there. He also hold the #3 record Wonderlic Score (Along with QB Ryan Fitzpatrick (Buffalo) and TE Ben Watson (Cleveland). Basically the guy is smart and fast. In the extreme.

In 2003 he got drafted by the Rams in the Third Round, where he played marginally, due to several injuries, and Torry Holt/Issac Bruce starting in front of him. Aside from being the second player in history to have back-to-back 100 yard games in the playoffs before a single 100 yard game in the regular season, his tenure in St. Louis was rather boring and unsuccessful.

Eventually he signed with Philly in '07, and proceeded to have what is still the best year of his career.

16 Games Started. 77 Receptions. 1,110 Yards. 14.4 Average. 75 Longest. 6 TDs.

This is what he is capable of, when not hampered by injuries, or shut down behind two Hall of Fame Wideouts.

Since that time, he has been injured in various manners and has not more started than 9 games per season. Eventually he was released by Philly. He tried out for a few teams this season but wasn't offered a contract.

Unfortunately for him, he was recently diagnosed with Testicular Cancer, and was treated for it in September. From all reports, he's alright now. He was ready to sign with a team earlier in the season, but had to have an emergency root canal, which delayed his return, and made for good timing for Miami.

Curtis brings Speed (which we are clearly lacking), Depth (Also lacking), but most importantly, Football acumen. He's an intelligent veteran, and could probably help out our Rookie Wide Receivers at the very least. He's under contract for the rest of the year here, and I hope to see good things from the signing. I can imagine him staying healthy for the 3 remaining games. He might also help Quagmire get his confidence back.

It's hard not to root for this underdog.
