Realistic Free Agents we should look at...
I know, the season isn't over but many of us have realize this team isn't winning the super bowl this year, so its tough to not think how we can add some much needed pieces this offseason. Aside from the draft, where too much goes on before hand to know what certain teams will do, we can look at Free Agency and think of some players that will be available as things currently stand for us.
We all know that we need a tight end to compliment Fasano and stretch the field and I think there is one in Owen Daniels. I know he has a history of ACL injuries but the guy is a serious talent when healthy and he seems to be recovered from his surgery that happened last season. Houston's offense is pretty legit and they have Joel Dressen who has been producing for them in his absence, so I don't think Houston will go crazy in trying to sign him when their clear problem is Defense. To go along with Daniels, is Jacoby Jones. A serious deep threat with very good speed who returns kicks and compliments andre johnson real well. I mean i know its hard not to compliment the best WR in the NFL but he def has better hands then Ginn ever did, i know its not saying much but hes a pretty good WR and has good return ability. Im sure i'm not the only one who remembered him returning a KO for a touchdown against us (i think it was last year but not 100% sure).
Lastly, my personal favorite free agent who I think we have a realistic chance of signing, Tim Hightower. Now before you jump, here me out. This guy is averaging 5 yards per carry this year with a bad o-line and an awful QB...sound familiar? He runs very hard and has great burst to compliment his 6'0 220 frame. All this and he has great hands out of the backfield and caught 63 passes last year. The best part is, he is only 3 years in the leage and 24 years old. I think with Beanie Wells and that team focusing on getting a new QB, there is a good chance we might be able to go after him. To be honest, i much rather throw a few extra dollars at a proven back who is so young then waste a draft pick on an unsure player when that pick can go to a more dire need like O-line. I honestly hope we use our first two picks on 0-line unless our first pick is Mallet or Luck. With a dominating o-line, you don't need the tight end to block as much or the RB to pass protect and can have more weapons out there and take some of the double team off Brandon Marshall and Davone Bess. Either Ricky or Ronnie, or both are gone after this year and although I like Hilliard, I think if we kept one of them for a year or two more and had hightower, then drafted a RB late or next year and let him develop, we can really set ourselves in that position for the future.
I know we all can dream and hope we sign Woodley and Mankins but lets be honest, we spent a lot of money last offseason and getting those players just might be too difficult especially since we NEEEEEEEDDDDD! to sign Soliai to a long term extension!
Let me know your thoughts and if you feel there are other players we should potentially target....

Mankins needs to be the top priority this offseason
We inquired about him this year and NE wasn’t going to trade him to a division rival. His relationship with the Pats is likely irreparably damaged. He would give us the best left side in the NFL. Plus with Garner coming back, that could make our line dominant.
As far as the other guys you mentioned, I think their current teams will try to resign them.

the Pats will try
but he may be looking to go elsewhere, and we’ll definitely spend money in the trenches.
I agree that Mankins should be top priority, and we need to make a Godfather offer midnight of the free agency start.
I actually really like the idea of adding Jacoby Jones and Hightower. And since I’m fully on the “go get a Franchise QB” bandwagon, those 2, along with Mankins, would sure up just about every need we have offensively. We would need to find a speedy complementary RB, but that could wait, and I’d be comfortable re-signing Ronnie or Ricky as a 2nd guy for a year at the right price. And if we target, say, Ryan Mallett in the draft, we would be able to use our draft picks to go up and get him because we don’t have a striking need anywhere else.
Chalk me up for wanting a big FA period so we can go after a top QB on draft day.

I wouldn't be shocked if Hightower does
Jones, less so but he can still hit the market.

I like Mallet
But have you watched him all season? His LSU game, was a thing of beauty, I rewinded and watched the play where he threaded the needle down the sideline, with def in Cover 2 the WR made a brilliant catch and took it for 6…
But I see a lot of Chad Henne in him… Big Arm, but inaccurate at times and struggles to make the best read.
Just like in every QB this stuff can be taught… or can it.
Bottom line I love watching him play, would love seeing him in Teal, but a.) I don’t think he’ll be there and b.) I am not confident he’ll be the franchise QB we all want and need.

assuming the cap is back in the same capacity that it was.. We really need to figure out what the new CBA will look like before we discuss cap space, because there may not be any cap restrictions..

Mankins and Zach Miller out of Oakland
Mankins will be Franchised though. Does anyone think B. Billcheat will let him go for free. You have to love how they do business, but, hate them for the same reason. They Franchise Mankins and I will predict that he quits football.LOL. Don’t we have a marker with NE for the Welker trade? An yes we will spend the money for Mankins because V. Carey will be cut or traded. IMO
Carey isn't going anywhere...coaches have said he has to do other people's jobs and it makes him look bad bc the RG is screwing up
Plus, teams are getting smarter now and sending their best pass rushers against him and not long…but he held Woodley and Harrison in check vs Pitt….I would love Mankins, and I could soo see the Pats drafted Wesnewski from Penn State (the best guard in the draft) to replace him. Either way i’d be happy with Mankins or a top Draft pick on a guard but I love the idea of signing mankins and then trading up for Mallet.
But like I said, im very high on Hightower and Jones…Zach Miller is a great tight end and I just can’t see him leaving Oakland, and althought he’s definitely a more complete tight end then Daniels, Daniels stretches the field better which is what we need becase Fasano plays very similar to Miller.
Carey is getting Left Tackle Money.
Depending on how long he has been playing hurt Carey has not performed. An you have to relize Sparano says nothing negative about his guys. Carey’s lateral footwork has been off this year. That is not good for a Tackle left or right. He’s been getting beat around the edge. His kick step isn’t there for what ever reason. IMO I think he’s been playing injuried all year. We just haven’t heard about it.
Daniels, I like him. I’m just not sure about the injuries. Little hesitant to go after these guys that have a history of injuries. Miller just turned 25 and Oakland has a history of doing dumb things. I don’t see them Franchising him. So he sould be able to test the market.

But money is no problem when you clean house and want to add more fans to the stands at Sunlife. Mankin will solidify our interior OL and Woodley wiill team with Wake to give us a pass rush tandem to be proud of.

Unless they restructure the new CBA and cut down the minimum years to FA.....
Hightower will be a RFA, and Arizona will most likely tender him at a first or second round tender.
I’m not too high on Daniels. Fasano has proven he can put up just as good numbers as Daniels has, without the benefit of Andre Johnson.

I think we need to go after Vernon Davis...
How much sense would it make to bring Vontae’s brother here… I mean, he fills a need and everything …. Also, I love the idea of adding Mankins if we can pry him away from NE. I would like to see us grab Kyle Orton if the price is right so that we can actually develop a QB if one of the NFL ready QBs don’t fall to us. I think we have plenty of talent at RB with or without Ricky and Ronnie, we just need to fix the offensive line and get a new OC. It would be nice to get a Jacoby Jones, but that is only after our offensive line gets a major overhaul. How many teams would kill for the offensive weapons that we have but are not using. I mean, if Henning figured out that he didn’t have to max protect and he could actually send RBs on routes out of the backfield … it would change the face of our offense. We wouldn’t need a burner, we would be able to spread any defense out, and even Henne would be able to make the throws he needed to make to be successful. I would love to see us push hard to get Ngata, just because the guy is a rare talent and you can never have too many big guys in the middle of your defense. Soliai is looking much better, but what do we have if he goes down?? I think we can add another OLB in the draft in the later rounds to develop and we will be really solid … everywhere.

CJ posted it below, but yea, we can't get Vernon considering he's turned into the face of that franchise and they will never trade him...
and if they did it would cost way too much in picks and yea its not happening
Love the Mankins idea.
Not so sure of Jones though. Every time I watch the Texans it seems like he has a crucial drop. And for the RB position, they seem to be a dime-a-dozen now; I bet there’s 60 RB’s in the league right now who could rush for a 1000 yards with a good line and 250 carries. Sure, there’s the elite ones out there, but who was the last elite RB that won a Super Bowl? Marshall Faulk?
As far as the draft, I know that this is extremely bias being an FSU fan, but I would love for us to trade down and draft 4-year starter and 2-time All-American Hudson to play either guard or center alongside Mankins and Garner. With the extra pick from trading down we could take Christian Ponder. Ponder’s had a disappointing year as he was viewed as a Heisman hopeful and the 2nd best QB prospect at the beginning of the year, but I think that had partly to do with the elbow issue he’s been having this year.
Screw Ponder get this guy!

Hey, like I said; extremely bias.
If it was up to me we would have drafted Andre Wadsworth, Peter Warrick, and Chris Weinke. To be honest the only college QB’s I’ve had a good look at is Ponder and Newton, so I really can’t speak intelligently on Locker. However, I think we would have to spend a 1st rounder to get Locker and I think we need that pick elsewhere. Plus call me crazy, but I’m not ready to completely move on from Henne which IMO we would have to do if we spent a 1st rounder on a QB where as a 2nd or 3rd could just be competition. Then again, how many 2nd round picks can a team spend on QB’s before they spring for a 1st.
How about we trade down and draft locker and get a 2nd round pick that way we still get stefen?

All for trading down.
I would just rather use that 1st pick on a lineman, and Ponder is a 1st round talent that will be available in the 2nd.
By the way, this is probably really stupid, but who is stefen?
Think I figured out who stefen is.

My philosophy is that last year Locker was rated the number 1 qb prospect
But this year his numbers have been hurt due to his surrounding cast not being what its used to be, I believe he is the sure thing for our franchise qb, he can make all the throws Henne has been botching. We dont need a chiuaua fighting a dobermans war………..If you saw stick to Henne you might as well throw Thigpen to the # starting spot….

"Hopefully they'll bury one of our footballs, too," Brandon Marshall
KWL
The year he won it he wasn't even the starter.
He was just a great short yardage back, so I don’t really think that qualifies.
ummm
So even though he’s 5th in rushing yds ALL TIME…and the fact it was his last yr playing cuz they were trying to make willie parker their starter doesnt make him elite? sorry bro, 6 time pro bowler, offensive rookie of the yr…and he has more yds all time than faulk…id say the guy is elite.
"Hopefully they'll bury one of our footballs, too," Brandon Marshall
KWL
I think the point of the original comment was that it's been awhile since a team that was built around a running back won the Super Bowl
Pittsburgh’s team wasn’t built around Bettis. Even St. Louis wasn’t built on Faulk’s back, it was the passing game. Faulk was a huge part of that passing game, but he wasn’t the focal point of that offense, Warner throwing the ball was.
Chris Johnson, Adrian Peterson, Tomlinson earlier in his career, they all had offenses built around them. The point is, great RB’s are not a key to winning Championships.

Hightower , williams and sheets I can do that, Jones, BESS, and Marshall, with Hartline and Curtis coming in not bad either.but before all that we need to tweak the Oline and light a fire under Henne. I wish there was winter ball for football players like in Baseball.I’m not ready to toss him yet he needs time to slow down the game , you can see it, he is just scared. Now if there is a stud still on the draft board when we pick we better get him.

Jacoby Jones no --- Hightower yes
Jones is having an awful season in Houston this year with an above average quarterback and a complete stud at WR in Johnson - he would disappoint in Miami. I’ve watched enough Houston games to see Jones drop pass after catchable pass.
I love Hightower - not an elite RB, but definitely a guy who would work his tail off at being a true # 1. He also is a great receiver out of the backfield.
I think everyone is dreaming about signing the big name linemen in free agency, but I would be on board for getting Mankins — I just don’t see it happening.
Nobody hurt a tackler like Zonk did.

hightower is probably a pipe dream
I would be SHOCKED if that club lets Hightower walk away (get it?) they will probably tender him, and in effect take us right out of the running. As for jones having a awful season he has been targeted 55 times and caught 34 of them, i think he has dropped like 4 passes all year, and has three touchdowns. Hartline has been targeted 73 times and caught 43 of those, for one touchdown. We also have a complete stud at WR as well. I will give you that our quarterback doesnt compare, but I think jones would be a upgrade over bess in punt returns and challenge nolan at kick returns. plus the man has a little more size/speed then hartline. Most importantly i think if the money is right he can be had. I am not saying to get rid of Bhart to get jones I think we can cut curtis and demote or cut one of the two youngens.
founder and president of the pay henne fan club!!
My thoughts on acquisitions
I like the idea of Mankins and I think it is plausible depending on what the front office thinks of Incognito, a free agent this year, and rookie John Jerry. Hightower would depend on the free agency restrictions, but I am betting RFA will be reduced from 4 years to 3. As much as I’d like Zach Miller, I don’t think he will leave Oakland. He’ll likely be a top priority for them this offseason. Owen Daniels would be decent, but a torn ACL raises questions.
Free agent hopefuls:
WR Santonio Holmes – Yeah, he’s now hated because he’s a Jet and he has some problems. He has some issues, but he could bring a lot to Miami as a #2 WR. He’s the best free agent WR.
WR Plaxico Burress – Surprised at this one? He will likely come cheap. He isn’t very fast, but he does have good speed and could be another weapon. Given the likely discount, it is a risk worth taking.
LG Logan Mankins – No matter how good the front office thinks Incognito or Jerry have done, Mankins is a top 5 offensive guard in the NFL and is worth the upgrade.
RB DeAngelo Williams – Only if Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams are both allowed to leave. Hightower would be a great option depending on his availability due to free agency rules.
Draft Hopefuls:
WR Julio Jones, Alabama – AJ Green will be long gone, but Jones is an intriguing option. He is 6’4 and has sub-4.5 speed. He doesn’t have tremendous stats because of Alabama’s offense, but he has the ability to be a great WR in the NFL. He can run all the routes and he has tremendous hands. An extra upside for Sparano’s high demand on protecting the football? Julio Jones has never fumbled the football while at Alabama.
TE Kyle Rudolph, Notre Dame – Very good speed and can stretch the field. He has solid hands and runs solid routes as well. He is often flexed out in Notre Dame’s offense. He needs to work on his blocking, but he has all the receiving tools the Dolphin fanbase covets for a TE. He is 6’5 and is a big target for a QB. He will provide problems for LBs tasked to cover him.
TE Weslye Saunders, South Carolina – Not as solid of a pick as Rudolph, but he can be a late round gem. He was suspended for missing a team meeting in January and again later for a team violation, but was then dismissed entirely from the team. He is 6’5 and is another big target for a QB. He’s not as fast as Rudolph, but he can still stretch the middle of the field and he has solid hands. He is more capable as a blocker as well. He runs very well after the catch.
RB Mark Ingram, Alabama – He is my favorite RB in the draft since Adrian Peterson. I’m much higher on Ingram than I was on CJ Spiller because Ingram is more suited for Miami’s offense. Ingram has good speed and power. He is the type of runner that can run inside and push the pile or run outside and get to the perimeter. He runs very low and has excellent vision. I love his ability to read and exploit cutback lanes. With the way Miami often pulls their lineman, I really think Ingram can thrive in this offense while following the pulling lineman and hitting the holes. He’s one of the few RBs in this draft I feel comfortable carrying the ball 20+ times a game. I didn’t feel Spiller could carry the load Ingram could, another reason I was not high on him this past year.
C/G Rodney Hudson, FSU – He is very smart with his reads. He doesn’t have ideal height and weight, but he does have good strength and handles bull rushers well. I am a little concerned how he could handle some of the larger NTs however. He moves very well and is exceptional at picking up the blitz and stunts. He is a durable and versatile player. He played two seasons as a left guard and has also started a game at left tackle. He can be used at guard or center.
WR Leonard Hankerson, Miami – A worthy middle or late round pick. He is 6’3 and has good speed, though he is not as fast as some may think. If the Dolphins don’t wish to go with someone like Julio Jones in the first round or early second, Hankerson would be a great pick in the middle. He can run all the routes, but he needs to improve his pass catching. He has the ability to make the big plays and score quick TDs and can also find the soft spots in zone coverage. He likely would need time to develop as a #2 WR, but he’d be a solid option as a #4 WR as he progresses. Not surprising to me, Roberto Wallace and Marlon Moore have not reached the potential some fans thought they had in the preseason. In my opinion, Hankerson has more upside than both Wallace and Moore.
Other options for middle or late round picks:
RB Daniel Thomas, Kansas State
WR Jon Baldwin, Pittsburgh
RT Orlando Franklin, Miami
QB Blaine Gabbert, Missouri
QB Ricky Stanzi, Iowa
C Stefen Wisniewski, Penn State
CB Reshad Carmichael, Virginia Tech
CB Curtis Brown, Texas
TE George Bryan, North Carolina State
TE David Paulson, Oregon
DE Marcell Dareus, Alabama
ILB Chris Marve, Vanderbilt
OLB Justin Houston, Georgia
Those are just additional names I wouldn’t mind later in the draft. I think my favorite may be Justin Houston. Even is Misi does prove to work out, there is nothing wrong with having more depth. I included Gabbert and Stanzi on this list with the assumption the coaching staff is not looking to get Locker or Mallett in the first or second round. If they choose to pass on them, I still think getting a project such as Gabbert or Stanzi in the later rounds would still be a wise decision.
I like some of these
Not based on needs because I don’t agree the Fins need a WR in the draft, maybe a speed threat, but I like Hankerson a lot, I also like Daniel Thomas and Ricky Stanzi. Rudolph is a good idea, not sure of his draft ranking but with TE’s as the Patriots have shown good TE’s can come in the later rounds… I mean a lot of the good TE’s in the league are from later rounds.
I like Stanzi a lot.

The draft prospects
I don’t think WR is a big need, but I do think we need to build on depth. We can’t fool ourselves and think Marshall, Hartline, and Bess would all be healthy for 16 games next year. Julio Jones is intriguing because of his talents, but the others are middle round prospects. Baldwin may find his way into the 2nd round, but I think Hankerson is a 3rd round or 4th round prospect. I wouldn’t have a problem with a WR in round 3 or 4. Jones wouldn’t be a reach for the first round pick at all, but it would raise eyebrows because of other needs. I wouldn’t be disappointed with Jones though.
I think Rudolph is probably a 2nd round prospect, but I’d be fine on passing him over for Saunders. Saunders is nearly as good, but because of his maturity issues he will likely be a 5th round or later prospect. He could be a steal later on if the staff can correct his behavior. I also don’t consider the Patriots TEs late round gems. Hernandez was a 4th round pick, but he was projected to go in the 2nd or 3rd and he fell because of off-field concerns and some teams doubted his ability to be a TE and thought he was better suited for H-Back. He is a very weak blocker and I think Rudolph and Saunders are more well-rounded TEs.
I’m also a fan of Stanzi and I think he’d be worth a 5th or 6th round investment. Obviously this depends on the desires of the front office. If they stick with the current 3 and Pennington doesn’t retire, Stanzi would be the 4th string QB and destined for the practice squad. If CP goes, the coaching staff may opt just for Henne and Thigpen, thus making Stanzi a worthy investment for the 3rd string QB.
For my ideal draft, I think I may like RB Mark Ingram in the first, OLB Justin Houston in the third, Orlando Franklin in the fourth, TE Weslye Saunders in the fifth, and QB Ricky Stanzi in the 6th. I wouldn’t mind Wisniewski in the third either, but I think he may go in the second. I’d be very happy if the draft went in that direction.
