The Doghouse: B-Hart & Roberto Wallace (with new poll)
Well, the biggest news this week was Randy Moss getting waived by the Vikings, a very stupid move in my opinion. We were supposedly interested in him, but when the deadline came around, Moss was on the Titans roster. We didn't even put a claim in for him. Am I disappointed? Somewhat.
Moss could have provided the deep threat for us, but he's not the answer. I'd rather draft a speedy rookie, rather than a player coming towards the end of his career. I believe, he would have been a cancer in the locker room, and teach the younger players bad habits.
If we would have gotten Moss, two players would have been affected: Brian Hartline and Roberto Wallace.
Let's start with Brian.
He is our deep threat (he's not fast, but he'll do). He lost his starting positon to Davone Bess last week, and lost some significant playing time. When he was given the opprotunity, he dropped a key pass that would have gone for a big gain. But he made up for it with a beautifuly executed end around.
So why is Hartline in my doghouse? He made a statement about Moss:
"Obviously he’s the same position I’m playing, but overall, as a football fan I would say no. Maybe a lot of Miami fans would not like that, but … I don’t think he’s the part we’re missing.""I don’t think that an addition of a Randy Moss necessarily changes our team a whole lot. If we are missing a piece, that’s not the piece we’re missing."
Well, I agree with Hartline. Now he needs to prove to me we don't need Moss. He needs to start making some plays and produce double coverage so Marshall, Bess, Fasano, and sometimes Wallace, can get open. Hartline has the potential to be a solid #2 WR, he just hasn't proven it yet.
Now let's talk about Wallace.
I didn't expect him to make it out of training camp. But, he's like Bess. He worked hard and made some terrific plays in the preseason.
Wallace saw alot of playing time last week. He was the #3 WR, ahead of Hartline. He almost made a beautiful TD catch, but it would have been negated anyway, because he ran out of bounds and came back in.
Anyone else think he looks alot like Marshall on the field? Well, they are similar in size. they are both 6-4, but Wallace is 5 pounds lighter at 225 (if you can't do the math, Marshall is 230). Wallace needs to use his height to his advantage, by going up for the ball.
No doubt, Wallace would be inactive on gameday if Moss had been claimed by us. I really like Wallace, and I think he has potential. He'll be a key factor in 3 & 4 WR sets against the Ravens on Sunday.
He's in my doghouse because, the coaches obviously have alot of faith in him, if they didn't get Moss. Now he has to prove why they like him.
Davone Bess on Wallace:
``He's a big body, man,'' Bess said. ``He catches the ball well, and he runs good routes. He moves well for a big guy.''
Well, it's been a while since I've done one of these. So leave some comments and let me know if anything needs improved. Also, if there is an option you'd like me to add to the poll, comment and I'll fix it as soon as I can.

Miami's Superstarts: Brandon Marshall, Karlos Dansby, Vontae Davis (just wait), Lebron James, Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh, and Hanley Ramirez :)
I thought that bringing in a #1 wr
should draw double coverage to that side and let the rest of the offense feed off of that. Hartline is doing well fot a second year plater that has to share throws with Bess and Marshall. He got 5 for 53 against a very good corner in Hall. We are fine in the WR position.

Hartline doesn't have to share throws with anyone
If he gets open consistently than I’m sure they can get him the ball.Marshall was getting contained in New England,Pittsburgh, and Cincy but Hartline was no where to be found.
btw Hall wasn’t covering Hartline, the backup corner Morgan Trent was.

Hartline certainly wasn't the #3 last week....
He was on the field lined up at the #2 spot most of the day…. Bess started there, but moved mostly to the slot in the game… Wallace was told he’d play in 3 receiver sets, but his action was limited…. Most 3 receiver sets lined up with Hartline outside, Bess in the slot.
Bess had 9 balls thrown his way
Hartline had 8 (5 catches….and one HUGE drop as you mentioned)
Wallace had 1 pass thrown his way….no catches.
Bess and Hartline are both performing well for their positions….
As for Marshall being contained in Cinci, thats absolutely wrong. Marshall was open a lot more than what the stats show….as was Hartline….

Ight so that proves my point about the whole
sharing the ball thing. Hartline and Bess have equal opportunity throws going their way.
as for Marshall being contained you can play that wide open game all day. Sure there are going to be times where he’s open and not thrown to but there are also times where he might look open but he may just be gettin baited by the safety/corner.

On the same token though...
TO was crazy open as well…. Ocho was locked down nicely, but I swear watching the game I was surprised that TO didn’t have over 200 yards….. Come the 3rd quarter I was shocked to see how bad Palmer’s #’s were…..

cause if Marshall was really wide open like you said, then he woud usually be jumping and getting hype after the pay because Henne missed him

Hartline is the starting receiver this week back where he belongs.
Henne needs to step up

Are you sure thats where he belongs?
He’s been inconsistent this year as a #2. Between his drops and not gettin open on 1-on-1 coverage, he has yet to prove he can be a starting #2 week in and week out.

Consistently mediocre,
it is what it is, he’s the starter but the guy that comes off the bench is way more productive.

So Wallace's 1 Target, with no receptions was more productive
than 5 for 53 yards, 1 run for 30 yards……so 80 total yards…..
Yeah, that make sense.

It's extremely simple,
lf you don’t START, then you come off the bench, Bess has started 1 game this year, so that means he comes off the bench.

And b4 anyone goes off on me about the Ginn/White dislike that I carried with me for a while.. hey dont forget I was right. lol

Thats a good point. I would like to see his numbers done
as a percentage of drops vs targets and then compared against others in the NFL that are respected WR’s. Also comparing Hartline who is in his second season and no one expects to be a number one type WR against Marshall that is a sure fire number one top 3-4 guy in the NFL seems like an unfair comparison to say the least.

Ok question...
If Marshall was getting open, then why weren’t we getting the ball to him more? Was Henne playing bad or was play calling the culprit? Since you were there and saw stuff like that, you could give us some insight into why Marshall and Hartline as well weren’t getting the ball, even if they were getting open.
What did you think of Henne’s play?

My opinion....and what it looked like to me...
Was that Marshall was Henne’s first read on most plays. If Marshall didn’t immediately separate from the jam, or didn’t look like he broke well, then Henne went thru his progressions and if anyone was open(ish) they got the ball…. he rarely went back to Marshall.
Marshall would get jammed, and then completely beat coverage with either a double move, or he was physically just punishing guys that jammed him…. and he’d run free, but Henne never came back to him.
Obviously that doesn’t include 3rd down and short plays, as Bess is always almost the only read (and everyone in the NFL knows it)….
But, in my opinion, if Henne would go back to Marshall, or make Marshall his 2nd read more often, he’d see a lot more HUGE gains.

I'm with you dog. Draft a burner who can stretch the field. Several WRs in the next class can double as returners like ginn. Unlike Ginn, they catch the ball.
NY Jets = NFL's Chicago Cubs
There's a fine line between hopeful and desperate. Just look @ Jets fans.
wallace will be better than hartline..
if given the opportunity. Hes clearly the bigger target and has around the same speed. I go to the same school he did and we were in the same class. For what its worth, the guy is really smart, mature, and a classy character. He was one of the best WR at SDSU ever, although thats not saying much since SDSU hasn’t been good since Marshall Faulk left, but he does have alot of talent with that height. A receiving group would be great if it were Marshall, Wallace, Bess, and someone who can stretch the field (Hartline, Moore, draftee next year?)

It takes 4 years on AVERAGE for a WR to make the transition from college to the NFL. Hartline is in year 2. Yes, he drops passes. But so does Brandon Marshall. Honestly, i’m a fan of Hartline. It is obvious to me that he is a tough competitor. He’s a hard worker. He’s fast (yes, I realize that everyone on thephinsider is convinced that he is slow as molasses). He runs between a 4.45 and a 4.52 40 yard dash. I realize that he is not Desean Jackson, but it’s still a good 40 time.
This is a thought that i’m going to add because I literally just thought of it:
What if, during the next home game, the crowd started chanting “Hartline” after his first catch? I wonder what that would do for his confidence. Seeing as the way Ted Ginn Jr. was run out of the state of Florida by the fans, it certainly couldn’t hurt.
^^^ this up to the point of chanting.. lol
Henne needs to step up
B Marshall + B Hartline D Bess = The 2nd comming of The Killer B's MPF 04/17/10

Truth be told, I also love cranberry sauce with my turkey. Love ti. I can eat the stuff straight too.
The great thing about this thread is that, post Moss throwing in a curve ball, it is academic. Well… it’s academic on a fansite anyway, but even still Hartline and Wallace (and Moore if he suits up) are the guys we have. We aren’t getting anyone new for the rest of the year so we have about 9-12 possible more games to judge their work this season.
"The first thing I do when I get out of bed and feel the jolt in my knees is think of Roy Winston. On the second step, my calcified Adam's apple starts bobbing, and I think of Carl Eller. A few more steps in the dark and it's Willie Lanier. By the time I get to the bathroom, I'm flashing back to Dick Butkus and Ray Nitschke. And when the light finally comes on, I just hope that somewhere in the darkness they're thinking of me, too" - Larry Csonka.
He played before my time but one of the toughest SOBs to ever play!
wasnt it marshall who went out-a-bounds then in at goal line/end zone?...I like...
turtles…No, really, I like Wallace, but want him to get more/do more….he would sneak up on alot of people if he had a break out performance…me included!!!

Cranberry sauce is awesome.
I think that Wallace & Moore are going to have lots of chances this year. Moore hasn’t really had a shot at all. He dropped a couple of passes I believe?
How could there be no greenbean cassarole on your list?

LOL I love turkey but good homemade mashed potatoes rock.
Besides its not like a slice of turkey is a 16 oz bone in ribeye. No way any veggie or starch beats that.

Hartline
Brandon Marshall receives more attention from defenses than any other WR in the league. That’s fact. The problem with Hartline is that he doesn’t make teams pay for all the coverage they throw at Marshall. ANY WR starting opposite Marshall should be making far more impact plays than Hartline has made. That’s exactly why Brandon stated publicly that he would like to see the Dolphins’ go after Moss. He realizes more than anyone what a real threat opposite him would mean for the team as well as his own performance. This year Hartline just doesn’t pass the eyeball test, watching him play you just don’t see him making a difference, instead, we’re getting big drops and disastrous fumbles like the one against Pittsburgh. Honestly I believe I saw a better player last year, call it sophomore slump or whatever, he just does not seem as effective. It’s time he step up or we will really need to find another starter to go with our other WRs. BTW, Bess really doesn’t belong as a sterter on the outside, he’s perfectly suited for the slot, where he’s one of the leagues best.

Agree
If our team were thanksgiving dinner Hartline would be the Turkey.
Marshall would be the Gravy.
Cheerleaders would be the Pie.
