Thanksgiving Day - and a classic Dolphins memory!

HAPPY THANKSGIVING, EVERYONE!

No matter where you are or what you are doing, enjoy the holiday and be safe!

Hopefully today's games will be somewhat entertaining. Of course, nothing will be able to beat the classic we got to enjoy on this very date seventeen years ago.

I'm of course referring to the epic Dolphins/Cowboys game from Thanksgiving 1993. Don't remember the game? No problem. Video highlights complete with the classic NFL on NBC theme song are after the jump. Enjoy!

As for today, here's the schedule:

Patriots at Lions, 12:30, CBS
Saints at Cowboys, 4:15, FOX
Bengals at Jets, 8:20, NFLN

Have a great day, everyone! And be sure to enjoy a little piece of Dolphins history below...

I do too. I was 39 and watching the game with some friends who have since passed.

Still gives me chills

Talk about a swing in emotions! I remember slumping my head down after the block, and then hearing the officiating, I jumped from my seat and got right up near the TV screen as if I was on the field trying to figure out who touched the ball! That was the most memorable Thanksgiving ever. What I wouldnt give for the Fins to make a run for a playoff birth.

one of the best thanksgiving games I ever watched. It was my 1st thanksgiving with my now ex’s family, all huge cowboy fans. they were giving me hell all through the game, but in the end I was the only one dancing around the room , hooting and fist pumping they thought I was nut’s. I loved every minute of it. just want to extend my thanksgiving wish to all my fellow phinsiders, good health, happy times, and here’s to 6 more dolphin win’s……yeahhhhh baby!

Man, i wish we had an OC watching this NE game.

Double moves, down out and ups, and a whole bunch of screens and PA to slow the pass rush. Also, They went from good WRs last year and almost no RB and TE talent to great talent at Te and RB and only Welker and the OC actually ADAPTED the offense!

+1

Subtracting Randy Moss from an offense isn’t a small matter. Yet they’ve managed to keep winning games with what they have.

Indeed, adjust the scheme to fit the shapes (players), rather than vice versa.

;-)

since it seems we are the only ones watching the game…

For some reason, Shaun Hill reminds me of Pennington….fairly smart, rah rah sort of guy…..very limited physically.

Suh….tremendous player!

Welker still getting it done….w/o Moss..

NE sure making use of the TE in their offense….dovetails nicely with our discussion of tailoring the scheme to the talent.

by Natalya on Nov 25, 2010 2:32 PM EST up reply actions

I think Hill is has better arm strength, durability and moves in the pocket.

I can’t believe the Lions are winning! Knock on wood!

Suh is just amazing, but getting Odrick wasn’t too bad of a consolation prize.

Welker was able to get it done here with nobody.

Imagine that could be us if we had a competent OC.

Also, I wish we used a lot more motion and got our RBs involved more in the passing game. Which would help us with Marshall out. It also wouldn’t hurt to actually have two or three guys go downfield every once in a while.

Well...

few are as physically limited as our own $3.2m Penne-man. Compared to Stafford, Hill looks like a guy playing with half a deck :-)

Oh oh, talk about a blown coverage, long TD. Seems the corner was thinking he could just get a jam on the WR at the line and then release the receiver where someone else would pick him up. Oops!

Yeah, Welker was fine here too but I’m sure you remember he got slagged off a lot here with homers saying he was only good due to Moss.

Well it would help if Odrick could have avoided injury. TOugh to lose a rookie that early as next year will almost be like starting over.

Ricky Williams has showed himself to be useful in in the passing game over recent years. I think having a Leon Washington type back to use for precisely that, short passes, bubble screens…and essentially passes that equal “handoffs” but give your back space in the open field might help.

It is going to be a struggle though if the OL injuries persist and we run as poorly as we did last week.

by Natalya on Nov 25, 2010 2:48 PM EST up reply actions

That was a huge mistake by the safety.

I think they had a under over double team, because the DB coach was yelling at the safety.

Ronnie is also very good in the open field. These passes are like extended handoffs and can replace the running game if your QB is good enough to get it done.

I think we are set on the D-line for awhile as long as we aren’t devastated by injuries. We could use another NT, but Soliai is a good backup.

After the Ravens game I want to see Crowder as a backup, he just isn’t athletic at all.

Our secondary is young and I think we will be set there for years. What we really need is O-line talent and a blocking and Receiving TE. (that’s 2 TEs).

And yet more bad coverage from Detroit...

strange that they’d be having this problem in light of oh, say about 183 different analysts in the preseason saying their secondary was awful…

Yeap, Philly used those kind of passes all the time with Westbrook a couple of years ago. I suppose it was the closest to a run play that Andy Reid could bring himself to run… Ditto NO with Reggie Bush at times.

Heh, I can think of plenty of things we need….

An answer at QB (be it Henne or someone else)
O-line help
Youth in the backfield.
TE..
Better/different scheme on Offense..

Starting to look yet again, as they did a few weeks ago vs the Jets, that the Lions will snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

by Natalya on Nov 25, 2010 3:25 PM EST up reply actions

I think we keep either RB or RW.

I like Darren Evans, Locke, Saine, or Cooper. Any three of those four would be nice. But we definitely need to take Wisniewski in the first. I don’t care if he is a little undersized, our training program will beef him up.

I like Andy Dalton or Devlin as a late round QB.

Ilike these guys as ILBs:
1) Scott Lutrus, ILB, Connecticut, RDs 5-7
2) Josh Bynes, ILB, Auburn RDs 5-7
3) Brian Smith, ILB, Notre Dame, RDs 5-7
4) Mario Harvey, ILB, Marshall, RDs 4-6
5) Mike Mohamed, ILB, California, RDs 3-5

They are all big enough for our system and are all more athletic than our Crowder.

Detroit have taken mass amounts of penalties this season..

We both lost a deep threat and added a YAC WR.

There’s this lame anouncer, that says in (really anticlimatic voice) & that’s a miami first down. like we didn’t just score & i want to say to him just relax, no budy scored. I mean the crowd is yelling already, we need to get hyped when we score not when we just get a first down. Oh the anouncer need’s to keep the crowd as quiet as posible whilest we have the ball. But he must be a LAME rookie!

JETS and PATS win

Let’s face it, both teams are much more well-coached than Miami and find ways to win even when things aren’t going their way. They adapt, they adjust, and injuries don’t phase them. The Dolphins on the other hand need everything to go perfect just to squeeze out a win…and when things aren’t going our way we get blown-out and embarrassed. That is the difference between us and them. They find ways to win, we find ways to lose.

One more thing about that Thanksgiving day back in 1993....

If I remember correctly, the Dolphins didn’t win another game the rest of the year. That was the year Dan was loss in week five in Cleveland. Looked like a pretty good team that year, too.
